The 21-Yard Retreat

February 8th, 2021

Shaqtastic

Joe simply cannot stop watching this video.

It sort of sums up the root cause of the Buccaneers defense turning in the greatest defensive performance in team history. It all started up front.

The Bucs’ pass rush was relentless, and they didn’t need a lot of blitz help. The four-man gang kept coming and coming and coming after Patrick Mahomes.

On this particular and very critical third-down late in the first half, the jailbreak was on. Shaq Barrett chases escape artist Mahomes 21 yards deep into the Chiefs backfield.

Joe is convinced the rush got in Mahomes’ head, in addition to in his face.

Joe hopes you enjoy this video as much as Joe has. It goes great with breakfast.

  1. Nate Dawg Says:

Mahomes in first quarter was running forward..last three quarters spent more time running backwards for his life. I think he ran more yards backwards than total chiefs offence.

  2. Bird Says:

    Shaq about to get paid

He wants to be back. Bucs gave him his shot he said
    And he loves bowles defense
Hope we can work a good deal. I think his agent is rosenhaus

    Lets go
This team will be better next year
    Thats scary

  3. BigPoppaBuc Says:

They were foolish to think those tackles didn’t need help. Or maybe they just don’t have the personnel to provide extra protection. Ppl are making excuses for the chiefs O-line but the coaching didn’t seem to do anything to help. And as far as penalties… That play right there is just one example of many holding penalties that went uncalled for KC. I don’t care if that O-line was full strength… Shaq, JPP and the boys were out to hunt.

  4. SKBucsfan Says:

Homeboy ran for 400 plus yards behind the line of scrimmage. He should have called for help.!

  5. UKbuccaneer Says:

Mahomes deserves credit, to be fair. He had the you-know-what beat out of him and he just kept trying to make plays. He’s a generational talent, who was given no chance against a fearsome defensive front with not protection.

  6. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

We only blitzed 5 times that game. We won in part because we were able to pressure with our front 4, and doubled all their threats.
Vita Vea was the difference IMHO !
The big guy almost had 3 sacks, and collapsed the pocket nearly every time.
Sean Peyton predicted this win yesterday, and also said in his opinion, we are the best team in the NFL right now!
Better get your seasons tickets ASAP

  7. lambchop Says:

So, can we predict who on this defense will be future HOFers?

  8. 123urout Says:

The Bucs defense was outstanding last night. I just hope Jason Licht will work his magic to keep this team together to make another run next season.

  9. SKBucsfan Says:

I would have liked the NFL to break ranks and give the MVP to the entire defense. Would never happen but they deserved it.

  10. Cannon Says:

Rumor has it the Mahomes is still running backwards

  11. Mitch Says:

Mahomes ran for a total of 498 yards before being able to get a pass off. That’s awesome.

  12. Show Me the TDs Says:

According to Next Gen Stats Mahomes scrambled behind the line of scrimmage for 497 yards. Unbelievable!

  13. 123urout Says:

cannon….. that was EPIC !!!! hahahahaha

  14. Doctor Stroud Says:

To hold KC to no touchdowns is amazing! Good work! Vita Vea wasn’t out there every snap, but his presence made the defense even better. Did anyone else notice that he lined up at defensive end?! He almost got to Mahomes.

  15. Doctor Stroud Says:

That move by Shaq was Simeon Rice-esque!

  16. Cobraboy Says:

I thought that was intentional grounding, because I don’t think the ball got past the LoS.

  17. SKBucsfan Says:

I haven’t seen a QB scramble that much for over a year. Unfortunately he played for the Bucs and it was a regular occurrence. And when he threw it it was usually an interception.

  18. David Says:

November 29 the Chiefs dominated the first quarter and went up 17 -0.

Since then, they have played 7 quarters of football and Tampa has outscored them 55 – 19 Allowing that explosive offense to score only 1touchdown.

    DOMINANT

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We would have sacked any other QB 12 times last night……we pressured him from the very start.

The difference…..4 man rushes….we kept maximum players in the secondary to knock down the amazing scrambling Mahomes passes….

  20. geno711 Says:

    Thanks Joe for posting this.

It was intentional grounding as SKBucsfan indicates.

The line of scrimmage was the 14 yard line. The line judge was standing right on the line The ball went out at the 18 or 19 yard line.

The line judge after the play starts walking to the referee and reaches her hand back to the back pocket. They discuss and and decide to not call the penalty. I guess they were feeling sorry for Mahomes.

  21. David Says:

    They need to re-sign Shaq!
They also need to draft another D-linemen.

These playoffs prove once and for all – more important than great DBs.
A great front 4 can ruin any offense.
    It makes the linebackers better.
It makes the D backs better.
It doesn’t matter what the offense wants to do- Saints, Packers, Chiefs… if those front 4 win the trenches- game over.

D-line and O-line- Constantly draft the lines

  22. Alanbucsfan Says:

Reid admitted that Bowles outcoached them.
Great job by entire D!! Secondary confused Mahomes long enough for DLine to get after him.

  23. orlbucfan Says:

@lambchop Says: LVD better be one of the DBoyz picked for the HOF. He proved it in spades last night. 😊🏈

  24. King C Says:

First SB Defense was also all-time. No need to say this year was the greatest of all time for clickbait reasons

  25. Infomeplease Says:

    SKBF,. Revenge is Sweet!

  26. 813bucboi Says:

Realist, ndog, Lamarcus, gmc, JW, Kwon, smitty, and dirk all had a party last night…..lol….

    GO BUCS

  27. firethecannons Says:

Thanks to plays like the dude has to have operation on foot!
    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. FortMyersDave Says:

The video just show the dominance of that Defensive front over that KC O-line. The play should have been a grounding call but that is irrelevant now. Mahomes has not been harassed like that in a long time, maybe back to his Texas Tech days. Great day to be a Buc fan.

  29. AMI_Chris Says:

I can’t wait to hear Derrick Brooks talk about this defensive performance! And I will enjoy re-watching this game without my heart constantly in my throat.

  30. Kentucky Buc Says:

The pressure was there even with all the holding. LolIf u rewatch the game watch KCs O line hold every play. Lol

  31. SB Says:

He was lucky that was not intentional grounding

  32. timbucs2 Says:

Are those phones working? Help was NOT on the way last night!

  33. David Says:

Mahomes ran 468 yards behind the line of scrimmage before getting sacked or throwing a pass.

    Brady ran 37.

Under siege!!! Total domination by the D and O line

  34. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Just think Myhomies led for all of a few minutes and then we led the rest of the game! So bootyful!!!

  35. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Man timBucs2 I had thought about that before the game hoping we could say that to them!😅🤣😂

  36. Lord Cornelius Says:

    GO BUCS BABY!

So stoked to be moving back soon. Have Realist or Tmax even been on here since the playoffs?

    GO BUCS!

  37. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Kentucky Buc I was surprised #98 didn’t pass out, looked like dude was choking him out as long as he had his arm around his neck! Of course it wasn’t called but people cry about the PI against Evans down the sideline or the Honeybooboos PI on Evans in the endzone!😭😭😭😭 Cry Me A River why don’t you!!!

  38. dustin seager Says:

    Epic chase

  39. Jerry Says:

Bucs actually outcoached someone. But I was surprised KC never did anything to provide help to the OL. They were getting wrecked and then you have your QB running for his life. You got to change something.

  40. David Says:

I’ll tell you what – that was not incidental contact On the deep pass before the half to Evans. The defender was going down and reached out his hand on Evin‘s hip and then sliding down to his feet caused Evans to go down. That was PI.
I can’t stand these people saying the ball wasn’t catchable. BS. A stride and a half more that was the perfect pass gone for a touchdown

The one in the Endzone – he impeded the Evans from running his route, that said – that ball was not catchable.

The holding they called that overturned and interception… That was a pretty weak call..

But, Shaq and JPP were both held a handful of times on their way to Majones that were not called.

I hate this phrase, but at the end of the day, it is all irrelevant. The Bucs punched them in the face and dominated

  41. BUC CHEEKS Says:

HELP IS ON THE WAY!!!! ✌️

  42. buxsxntkt Says:

Nice seeing White and Winfield sort of high five, then White is doing sort of helicopters on the field. These guys just got more and more pumped after each play !

  43. buxsxntkt Says:

yes , on JPP and Shaq getting held. I recall one vividly where JPP was yanked to the ground by his arm. Unbelieveable that the refs missed that, but that’s what happens , so fouls are called, some are not, some go your way some dont.
I think the gal ref missed a bunch of calls, lol.

  44. timbucs2 Says:

Also pretty sure I saw after one Playoff Lenny run, that he got punched in the facemask by a defender after the play (he was sitting on the ground), did anyone else see that?

  45. meh Says:

I love that Vea just 180s and starts blocking the chief’s oline.

  46. Richard Dickson Says:

You could see in Mahomes’ eyes that we were in his head. Same for the rest of the KC offense. We just beat the crap out of that O-line.

  47. Rod Munch Says:

That ball did not get back to the LOS – how was that not intentional grounding? You have to be outside the pocket AND get the ball to the LOS. Is the LOS like the goaline, does it go all the way around the world? I always thought it had to get past the LOS, inbounds.

  48. Mike Says:

Yeah, I saw that facemask hit on Fornette and couldn’t believe they didn’t call it, but to be fair, Suh hit Mahomes face mask and it didn’t get called either. But those no calls on about 10 holding penalties I saw on the Bucs D was just ridiculous. I guess the refs fealt like they called so many penalties in the first half that they better just let them play for a bit.

  49. Oneilbucs Says:

Yall bringing up the plays where they should have thrown flags but let’s be honest the first half they threw every flags against the Chiefs in the first half . Some of those flags shouldn’t have been thrown against the Chiefs . Now I’m glad we won it but if all those flags was against us yall will be mad . So let’s just enjoy the win and the superbowl championship . It was superbowl or bust and they did it . Go bucs !!!

  50. Cobraboy Says:

Oneilbucs sounds like all those butthurt Chef fans on their forums: It’s The Refs Who Done Screwed Us!

  51. ItzOK Says:

Pay the man. stop messing around

  52. Oneilbucs Says:

Cobraboy I just believe in the truth more than a lie . We all would have been angry if we have gotten that many flags against us and we lose . Because it has happened to us before and we lost . And why do yall use words like but hurt so much ?? It’s got to be something wrong with you are may be you had some bad experiences with your but !!! Lol lol 😆🤣😂
