It Was “The Turning Point”

January 29th, 2021

New video of Scotty Miller.

Joe has maintained that, barring a lightning bolt of a play in a Super Bowl LV victory for the Bucs, Scotty Miller’s catch of a 39-yard bomb in the NFC Championship game will go down as the third-best play in Bucs history.

That play came as the first-half wound down to give the Bucs a two-score lead against the Packers in a five-point win. It was the difference between winning and losing.

But how did it happen? Leave it to none other than NFL Films to document why.

Yeah, the Packers, specifically corner Kevin King, were certain the Bucs were only trying to pick up short yardage to set up for a field goal. Miller blew past King for the score.

The reason for that, NFL Films shows, is that Miller lined up tight to the line. Miller’s route to the sideline and subsequent turning on the jets to go upfield forced King into a difficult angle to drop back in coverage, enabling Miller to get a step on King.

This is a perfect example of how all the tiny, small things in football lead to big things.

As NFL Films showed, if Miller lines up wide left, King has an easier angle to bracket Miller against the sideline.

Mike Evans is mic’ed up in the feature, which is cool. Joe loved Carlton Davis’ reaction when he saw Miller catch the touchdown.

Of course, Playoff Lenny got a first down to set up the Miller bomb. Just before Playoff Lenny’s catch, when it was fourth down, Arians had initially sent the punt team on the field before changing his mind. NFL Films caught Lavonte David hollering at Arians from the bench, “Go for it!”

Just some really cool stuff. NFL Films is the best.

This was no doubt a huge play…. I think JPP and Barrett need their own “narrative piece” …. Something just as long as this with as much emphasis on how they took over this game!! .. they are the reason Rogers didn’t run it in towards the end!! He had been dropped from behind 3 or 4 times on that exact same scramble earlier and heard footsteps…. I thought for sure they would blitz with the linebackers in this game and there totally depended on their front 4 instead… I was totally wrong on how affective they’d be!! I knew Vea would make a difference but dang … Those 2 deserve the trophy!! They took over that game and set the tone from the first drive! And with the KC tackles out I am now expecting them to be just as effective!! …. C’mon Barrett, JPP bring that trophy back to Tampa baby!!

I love all of those HUGE, historical Bucs’ plays but, Smokin’ Joe’s catch made everyone feel that we could beat the bully! If not for Joe J’s catch, maybe Ronde’s & DB’s sweet picks don’t happen! Joe’s catch changed everything!

Did anyone else notice Scooters’ product placement at the 3:21 mark?
