Godwin Looking For Bounceback

January 13th, 2021

Bucs WR Chris Godwin.

Since Bucs receiver Chris Godwin was drafted in the third round in 2017, he has only been on the winning end of a victory over the slimy Saints twice.

The first was his second game against the Saints his rookie season, when he caught a game-winning bomb in Week 17 from Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

That catch was sort of Godwin’s announcement to the NFL that he is a man to be respected.

Since, Godwin has turned into one of the NFL’s best, a Pro Bowler, and a man who simply does not drop passes.

That was, until last Saturday when he dropped four passes.

(Dropped passes are not an official NFL stat and there is no standard/go-to source for drop stats. Drop stats are terribly subjective. One man’s drop is another man’s uncatchable pass. Feel free to fight over if Godwin had three or four drops. Whatever number you come up with, it is too many.)

That image of Godwin being the modern-day Cris Carter was blown up at FedEx Field Saturday night.

Godwin addressed those drops today and said he cannot wait to take the field and redeem himself at the Superdome on Sunday in an NFC divisional playoff game.

“You always have little nicks and bruises and stuff,” said Godwin, in waving off any injury excuses for his rare spat of drops. “In terms of the drops, that was just a rough day for me. That is something I really owned after the game and I sat with because that’s not something I do.

“It is something I have to learn from and I think I have done that. I’m looking forward to the next opportunity to get out there and get back to being me.”

And that is Sunday night; Godwin could help the Bucs snap an embarrassing five-game losing streak to the slimy Saints, with an appearance in the NFC Championship on the line.

As far as his half-rotten game Saturday, all receivers should have such awful games. Godwin also caught a touchdown pass (remember, it was a one-score final) and helped the Bucs win a playoff game. That hadn’t happened around here in 18 years.

Class act. Wish him the best. He’s a bad man when he’s on point!

  2. David Says:

No concerns about it whatsoever. He will be just fine.
I’m concerned about the D line getting pressure!!

    He’ll be fine.

Saw he was limited with a hip/quad injury. Probably happened when he tried to hurdle those defenders. I hope it doesn’t impact his game too much come Sunday.

I love CG14 but he had a brief case of the drops before, 2018 maybe…. and he overcame it.
    I’m sure he will again.

I love CG14 but this happened once before. 2017 or 2018 he dropped a few easy ones.
I’m sure if you dig back you can find the article where Joe is concerned about it.
Don’t sweat it though…… he’ll be back to being outstanding soon.

I counted three. Whoops. He’ll make it up. 100 yards plus guaranteed! Go Godwin!

Mike Evans is fantastic, but Godwin and Grate have always had more dependable hands. Mike was always Winston’s favorite target, but those two had the higher catch percentage. Some of that was because Mike was/is the deep threat. We have never had a corps of receivers to rival this group. We need to keep them together and find a QB of the future. Our defense needs help on the field and in coaching. We have some great foundation pieces right now. I don’t want to see them wasted. The great franchises build on a young HC and a young QB working together for a decade or more. The Saints have had that, but it’s coming to an end soon. The Bucs have never had that. I hope to live long enough to see the start of a dynasty here.

Brady kept feeding him. He had a critical catch on the Bucs last drive that put them back in FG range after Brady took a sack, and almost got the first down, just two yards short. I’m not worried about Chris.

“Godwin’s four drops — equaling the drop total for his career entering the game” (from that)

    WOW

Has CG ever had a bad game? NO!! Could he have had a better game
In Washington? Sure! Will CG have a great game Sunday? YES !!!

    OWN IT!

Seen it for years, if Brady was concerned he would of sent Godwin into the abyss, instead he went right back to him. Brady needs Godwin as much as Godwin needs Brady. Joe failed to mention he dropped a touchdown pass that could of extended the lead. Nevertheless this man is for real and I have no doubt he comes up big Sunday.
