Calling Out Chris Godwin

January 23rd, 2021

Chris Godwin did not hold on

Bucs fans have watched Chris Godwin display sick hands for years, but something has gone wrong lately.

And a former Buccaneer didn’t shy away from talking about it on national radio this week.

Former Bucs, Cardinals, Chiefs and Jets tight end Anthony Becht hopped on SiriusXM NFL Radio in prime time and was asked about Godwin’s recent problems with drops.

For those unaware, Becht lives in the Tampa Bay area, never misses a Bucs game and used to work for the Bucs.

“Godwin, look, the thing you can’t teach, guys, is the big-game moments. Right?” Becht said. “Being in these circumstances when every inch, every opportunity counts. Godwin’s learning on the move, man. A lot of these players have never been in this opportunity to play in these kinda games. I’m not going to go away from him. I know [Brady] isn’t going to go away from him. He’s made plenty of big catches in the last two weeks. But man, you gotta get dialed in. Every point counts, every red zone opportunity.”

Joe’s not sure if Godwin has just run into bad luck, or whether he’s feeling pressure as Becht suggests. If Becht is right, Joe wonders whether some of that pressure could be contract-related. Godwin is about seven weeks away from free agency.

Joe is not down on Godwin, but hopefully whatever has stripped him of his truly elite hands disappears in a hurry.

  1. Jason Says:

If he becomes the second coming of Michael Clayton I’m gonna be pissed.

  2. Fernando Diaz Says:

    God so dramatic
He got that screen for a 1st down to ice the game
    Stop it

  3. JoeB Says:

It’s been since his surgery on his hands. I think he plays with fingers taped together. I don’t know why nobody seems to consider this as a factor.

  4. Casual Observer Says:

Hua four drop in DC must have been some sort of playoff game record. At least for the Bucs. Got to figure that out. Until then his hands were glue. Do it again.

  5. ScreamingEagleVet1991 Says:

This is just laziness by Becht and dramatic reporting. Has he dropped balls recently that we’re catchable? Yes. Consider that Godwin fractured his left index finger while making a touchdown catch in Week 7’s win over the Raiders. He underwent surgery and missed a game. Would you rather have him in the lineup at 80% and roll the dice or not at all? Easy answer. Want him in there.

  6. Nutbucer Says:

I’m a big fan of Chris, however I believe he’ll leave in free agency this year. He’ll have a big game tomorrow.

  7. lowercaseg Says:

I still have faith in CG14. He must ball out sunday.

  8. Listnfrmafar Says:

Brady will get him back on the same page, all it takes is one great catch and his confidence will come back. What is concerning is that Brady used to look at him on the goal line slant now he’s gone away from that and Godwin was wide open last week and Brady went to Gronk.

  9. Wesley Says:

He’s fine that last drop was a VERY tough ball to catch.

  10. Gofortheface30 Says:

Stop with the sorry limp D excuses of his finger. He played fantastic against the falcons and lions. Bet you were talking about his finger then. Chris Godwin is a big boy, he doesn’t need your coddling and cop out excuses people. He needs to step up and make every ball throw his way count. Period.

  11. Zwak Says:

Relax the kid had one bad game he’ll be fine.

  12. BillyBucFan Says:

Gonna eat against a backup corner tomorrow and all this talk will stop.
    Come On Man.

  13. DoooshLaRue Says:

Like I mentioned several times already, this is not a new issue.
I think CG is awesome but he seems to have brief spells where things just don’t click.

  14. windbaggery Says:

not worried about Godwin. A few drops were pretty difficult catches.

  15. PSL Bob Says:

That end zone drop was a killer. He had it, but couldn’t hold it as he hit the ground. That was so un-Godwin like. Pull it together Chris. I’ll be wearing your jersey tomorrow.

  16. pewter941 Says:

I wonder if his finger is bothering him

  17. Lamarcus Guiton Says:

He will sitting his butt on the bench. You don’t have a guy on the field with drops like that.

  18. Allbuccedup Says:

His catch will win the game Sunday.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think the combination of playoffs & contract and finger may add up to drops….

    I believe he’ll be fine…

Shaq is in the same situation……sackless for several games before contract….not good for Shaq

  20. Listnfrmafar Says:

This is what they are paid to do. Catch passes and sack QB’s. That TD Godwin dropped last week was a perfect pass, 95% of the WR I. The league make that catch. A few more drops and Brady stops looking his way. Catch the ball he’s not the only player nervous in the PO’s.

  21. Duane Says:

Godwin will bounce back, but I dont see him coming back next year. Someone is going to pay the man, and hopefully not an NFC south team. Johnson and Miller have made enough plays to earn more playing time, and that money is going to be put to use somewhere else. Likely to be lots of veteran suitors looking to take less money to play with Brady, we saw that happen this year. Still really happy for Godwin, and look for him to ball out this week.

  22. BobbyH Says:

The cold will amplify the problem broken finger problem. Target the other guys till we get to warm weather.

  23. mg Says:

Hope it doesn’t get as bad as Edelman.

  24. Darin Says:

    Goforthe
Chris is well aware as is the rest of the world. Thanks captain

  25. Hodad Says:

Wear stickier gloves. That goes for all our receivers. It’s hard catching a cold hard slick ball.

  26. Brandon Says:

Bucs are $30 mil under the cap and Godwin will be franchised if they can’t find a deal they can agree on, low first year salary, escalators in subsequent years.

  27. firethecannons Says:

the touchdown that he couldn’t hold–dude caught it
problem the acrobatics involved so extreme it wasn’t possible to hang on. hopefully they stop expecting incredible plays and produce on every play thereby making the near impossible play not necessary.

  28. Sumosam Says:

I hate that we get on guys for a couple of drops. Godwin is a great receiver and he’s just fine. He’ll catch everything thrown to him like he always does. Nobody’s perfect and Godwin’s hands are exceptional.

  29. Tommy Gunn Says:

I think the Bucs let Godwin go in free agency and sign Julian Edleman to replace him and resign AB. Nothing against Godwin he is a very good player but they can’t pay everybody and what Tommy wants Tommy gets

“He will sitting (sic) his butt on the bench. You don’t have a guy on the field with drops like that.”

CG14 on the bench?! With AB81 ALREADY on the bench?!?! smfh

–It’s rare to witness such flawed football logic. Even here.

  31. Chris Says:

Do people forget that last year the year micheal Thomas got the catch record that Chris Godwin was number 1 receiver in the league according to pro football focus??? He is a stud

  32. alton green Says:

Take my word for it, this is the frickn playoffs. we can’t be saying what a great game he’s had in the past. This is it!!!!!! Lose and the Bucs will watch from the couch. If he drops a pass tomorrow, BA do your job and sit him. we can’t lose this game cause we don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings.

  33. Ericb Says:

Adapt and overcome…those drops are in the past move forward and. Catch everything this game tom….go out there and ball out ..lets get some creativity on plays KEEP THE RUN GAME GOING ITS A MUST letsfgo play action is working as well we got this !!! TAMPA BAY ALL THE WAY

  34. SlyPirate Says:

Godwin caught a Penn State bowl game record 187 yards receiving in the Rose Bowl. He has it in him. If/when he reconnects with his killer instinct.

  35. Cee Says:

I can see Godwin signing in Baltimore. He fits their mold.

  36. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Time for him to pick it up. He has been poor 2 weeks ago and “meh” last week. Come on Chris. Alvin is on record: Bucs by 10.

  37. Zack Says:

Why are the writers of this blog so terrible? Joe asks

  38. Grizam Says:

CG has been golden all year , he will bounce back. Looking for a “huge” game tomorrow!
    #GoBucs

  39. Blue coffee Says:

I am following your blog since TB12 is in Tampa.
Great blog. Thanks to you all.
I watch Tom Brady his entire career. Never miss a single game of his.
I sense in this blog how TB12 changed already the hopes of everybody around, in his teem, including fans. And for a good reason, it’s because he always find a way to win. Forget about stats. They are meaningless for Brady. The only stat he cares about is ”WIN”.
Don’t worry, Chris Godwin is a stud, and he will prove it again. And I can say the same for ME, Brate, Gronk, Tyler J, Scotty Miller, Suh, Vea (he is back!), JPP, and all the O Line,… Tampa will win, because Brady will not turn the ball over. GO BUCS!

  40. atlBucs Says:

UHHHHHHH… perhaps its his broken finger that he’s been playing with the last few weeks.

  41. atlBucs Says:

Wanna hear something strange? We played GB in week six and KC and Buffalo played in week six. Joe is this the first time that has happened, the two conference championship games are a matchup from the same week?

  42. IrishMist Says:

It’s not just the finger, he is obviously dealing with a leg issue as well. He was really struggling to get up off the turf a few times against the Saints. If we can somehow get past Green Bay, the 2 weeks rest before the Super Bowl should help him a lot.

  43. m0j0 Says:

Godwin will be lights out. No worries about him.

  44. Anonymous Says:

His finger is the problem. He hasn’t used it to catch since he broke it. The ball needs to be thrown at an angle where he can stop its momentum with his opposite hand before securing it with the injured one. Plays should be designed so that his good hand is always away from the quarterback and he can stop the momentum of the ball with that hand.

  45. james west Says:

the dude has a bum finger damn, he had surgery and pins in it give him a break

  46. SOEbuc Says:

He couldn’t grab a fingertip pass in the back of the end zone. He’s really losing it. Godwin is a professional. I’d watch out for him this week if we can get the run game creating a balance.

  47. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Sumosam in Evans 2nd year he had like 6 drops out of 500 targets and some people up here were wanting to trade him or acted like he was a bust or something but now they’re in his corner. Everybody drops the ball even Randy Moss dropped easy passes at times so people need to get over themselves.

  48. The Deflator Says:

Tommy Gunn…put down the crack pipe.
