Bruce Arians Is Expecting To Air It Out

January 20th, 2021

Chris Godwin’s catch/no-catch on Sunday

Bucco Bruce Arians said tonight that he’s preparing to get back to no-risk-it-no-biscuit football on Sunday.

The Saints dropped two safeties in coverage so often in the divisional round playoff, it was a blow to the Bucs’ big-play passing game.

No worries. The Bucs pounded the rock and threw shorter.

But Arians said he’s expecting the Packers to serve up different looks on Sunday, and to challenge the Bucs to throw deep.

“We should get a little more single coverage in this game. I would anticipate Mike Pettine, who I think is one of the best coordinators on defense, to load that box up some,” Arians told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “And then we’ll wait and see. I mean, we had some success running the ball the last time we played them, but they might give us a shot at some 1-on-1’s out there and we’ll take’em.”

Few teams take the Saints’ approach; they love to double-cover Mike Evans right out of games, and they often succeed.

The Packers, however, are a bit more traditional, and they’ll have their cornerbacks in man coverage more often.

As Joe wrote in March, Tom Brady didn’t come to Tampa — and beg for Rob Gronkowski and Antonio Brown — to hand off and throw short.

Joe has no doubt the Bucs will get and take their deep shots on Sunday. Will Mike Evans re-emerge? Will Chris Godwin squeeze everything that comes his way? Those inevitable shots may end up defining the Bucs’ performance.

Could be exciting game. Hope we get up early and our defense pins their ears back

  2. unbelievable Says:

Hope the whole team gets out in the cold when they get up there and runs around, throws some passes, gets a feel for how the field and ball are in the tundra…

I expect we’ll see Jaire Alexander lined up on Evans quite a bit.

  3. BringBucsBack Says:

…In the cold and on the snow? Whatever they give, take it. It was nice watching the Bucs play tough, like playoff teams do.

  4. Wesley Says:

Just stop airing it out on 3rd and 2.

  5. TB12 In Da Bay Says:

Just stop with the airing it out on 3rd and short, it’s a drive killer and shows the staff cares little about possessing the ball

  6. Waterboy Says:

Play smart football and take whatever they give you.

  7. Ftmyersbuc Says:

At this point all our film will show the packers that on at least the first few 3rd and shorts we will throw a deep ball. Maybe we hit em with a screen or another short pass or even…gulp hand it off!!! They’d never expect it lol. However we all know on at the very least the first 2 3rd and shorts we will throw deep. When we connect on them it’s amazing and will be a big deal in this game. Depending on the packers first couple drives those plays could make us. Im very confident if we’r can get a early 2 score advantage, the packers are done. However they do let teams come back on them….jaguars, panthers, and colts all did.

  8. SB Says:

I must be one of the only fans that is not nervous about this game.

  9. SB Says:

And to the people with the weather in the snow, I have 4 feet of snow in my front yard right now. Our high school team plays in blizzards constantly. If you can’t handle a little bit of cold weather with all of the hype and adrenaline flowing in you and you don’t deserve to be there in the first place. I mean the forecast is mid 20s with 1.1 inches of snow

  10. 6throundpick Says:

Have the Bucs become the best “air it out” team in the NFL right now? And they have two great RBs peaking. There is no reason why this team shouldn’t be going out to impress on every play. Play football. Execute. Have fun.

  11. Steven007 Says:

The vast majority of the players on both teams have played in cold weather before. How has the heat in the early part of the season ever worked out for us down here? As always it always comes down to the team’s execution. If we execute well we should win.

  12. ModHairKen Says:

    This is a swerve.

They will run. They will run successfully. They will run often. They will chew clock.

Rodgers will decompensate. He’s soft. He’s sensitive. He cracks under pressure.

  13. Tbbucs3 Says:

I’ll believe it when I see it.

The Bucs coaching against better opponents (even last week vs the Saints) tends to be very conservative.

  14. Robert James Says:

can’t start slow. # 3 and outs to start this game and it maybe over

  15. Jisjr30 Says:

The manipulation starts here it’s gonna be a great Game Go Bucs

  16. Aaron Says:

I dont mind throwing on 3rd and short…but shouldn’t it be open? Seems like it’s never open

  17. Aceofaerospace Says:

They’ve won 13 games this year. I’m not going to second guess what their game plan is very much. I said from the beginning, if the Bucs can just get to the playoffs, I expected TB12 to finish it for us.

  18. All lives matter Says:

We’ve won 6 straight by getting back to a more balanced offense and now Arian’s want’s to get away from that? The biggest threat we have are our dual threat RB’s who control the clock and make play action work. Now Arian’s wants to rely on an offensive line to extend plays and protect Brady long enough to throw deep with a stacked box. This will keep the Packers fresh and in the game till the end since our time of possession each series will be shortened. This may backfire badly.

  19. Kentucky Buc Says:

Cmon guys. Do u really think he’s going to put his game plan out there. Sheesh

  20. Bucfan81 Says:

As long as we are not throwing deep 30 yards down the field on 3rd and 2 that is the stuff that gets me pissed during the game. Just pick up the first down.

  21. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Kentucky

    You’re right.

  22. TampaTown Says:

It’s all a game of poker now

  23. Colonel Angus Says:

Brady came to win, whatever that takes, he’s not a stat junky. I’ll give you a pass since you rarely watched the Patriots. Brady handed it off plenty of times, whatever the opposing defense’s weakness was, they attacked. To me, 28 degrees and snow = ground attack. Can’t wait, hope they wear all whites so we can’t see nothing but pewter helmets and cleats!

  24. REDZONE BA Says:

Not worried about our guys playing in 20 degrees and snow. Brady offense will be fine for 30 points. Expect a heavy dose of playoff Lenny.

I AM Worried about — a better Rogers performance this round… vs. Bowles strategy to neutralize Rogers to Harris for TD’s… And a 45 to 30 game…

  25. NO LIFE MATTERS Says:

Let’s gooooo Bucs!!!!! I know we can win this game!!! Leonard Fournette could be the key 🔑 to victory!!!! Him and Devin White can be the MVPs of this game to win it!!!

  26. Ufcguy Says:

First off the snow is not happening in the afternoon. It’s early am then sunny. Maybe if people actually read the forecast properly they’d know that. The weather will not be a factor.

  27. alton green Says:

seems like many have forgotten the Saints game. Crowd that line and make Rogers’ life miserable like Brees’ Offense? If he drops back to throw a bomb on 3rd and 7/8 inch, my frickn head will explode!! It’s ok to do that occasionally and against a suspect secondary. No risk it????????? NAH! Tompa will make the biscuits

  28. buc15 Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a smoke screen. I can see us pounding the rock as long as Jones is a go

  29. Big_Buc$ Says:

He can’t be serious going back to his offense. You can’t fix whats broken. Which Tampa has is a balanced attacked. This is a smoke screen. BA talks to much he just needs to shut up and coach.

  30. David Says:

I expect a big dose of RoJo and Lenny and back to play action.
That’s how the Bucs offense plays its best and it’s the best thing you can do against man-to-man coverage.
I fully expect the Bucs offense to explode this week.

I also think the Packers have shown the last several weeks that they are at their best when they are balanced and run the ball. Having VV in the middle on short yardage and first downs to help stuff the run is going to go a long way.
A-aron has been great against the blitz but I think we’re going to see Barrett and White get to him a couple times

    LFG!

  31. Mike Says:

Suh wants a piece of Rodgers and he’s going to get some, especially with his buddies Vea, JPP and White bringing heat.

  32. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

I do believe taking shots down field is the way to go in this game!! But not get carried away!! Brady can’t be throwing it 50 times or they will lose!! They have to be able to run the ball again… And on 3 and 2 pleeeeeease Tampa take what the defense gives you and just get the first down

  33. JimBuc2 Says:

Colonel Angus post contains what I consider a highly important word. Cleats. Yes, important because I have watched Bucs slipping on plays that would have succeded with secure footing. Additionally, cleats are weapons. Just ask former Packer(and ex Buc)Oline player Evans. BTW, the big mean dude that stepped on Evan’s hand would be our own manbeast N. Suh. In fairness to Suh, Evans, acting on his coach’s instructions had been untying Suh’s shoelaces the three prior scrums. Suh had enough, and let Evans nimble fingers know it on the walk back to the huddle. All the camera caught was the hand stomp, leading to Suh being unfairly labled a dirty player. During pregame warmups I hope our guys try different cleats. Never can tell, the game could turn on footgear.
    Go Bucs!
Stomp on RodQgers head. Punch his jawflapppin’ mouth and watch him curl into the fetus he is.
    Buc in and win SB55!!
