Running Is Winning

Run to win, writes SI.com.

Did Bucco Bruce Arians have an epiphany or did he just get tired of Bucs fans hollering?

The Bucs seemed determined to run the ball more Sunday than they have in weeks in the win over the Vikings. And a long time NFL writer typed that this should have been a no-brainer for Arians weeks ago.

The way the Bucs are built, writes Clark Judge of SI.com, they will win if they are disciplined enough to run the ball. Going Air Coryell would lead to falling far short of expectations.

Finally, someone got a clue in Tampa Bay. The more the Bucs run, the more Tom Brady is effective, and look at their last three losses for proof: The Bucs ran the ball 36 times in those games, while Brady had 132 dropbacks, with 127 attempts and five sacks. That’s not how you sell play/action, the strength of Brady’s game. Now look what happened Sunday: Brady threw three times fewer (23) than the Bucs ran (26). Result: A defeat of a surging Vikings’ team. Connect the dots people. Oh, yeah, it also made Brady 15-4 for his career following byes.

Look, it seems the Bucs have a fantasy football roster for throwing the ball down after down. And Joe likes passing as much as the next guy.

But it seems if the Bucs wanted to run Arians’ offense and maximize those fantastic weapons in the passing game, they got rid of the quarterback to pull that off.

Park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking Bucs quarterback Tom Brady is a more balanced-attack type of quarterback. That doesn’t mean he can’t throw a lot but he is more effective when the offense is more balanced.

In this case, less is more.

Besides, one former NFL fullback thinks by throwing the ball 35+ times a game, the Bucs are misusing their “maulers” up front.

You pound it enough, hold will begin to open up especially once RoJo gets going

Even Shady was effective running on 3rd down……why?…..because everybody in the world expected a pass…..

It also helps not to be down 17-0 in the first quarter….

  3. BucDan Says:

Not only did they run the ball more often, almost every play had pre-snap motion from Godwin, the RB or both.

ROJO has carried the ball 180 times for 900 yards , I am no math whiz , but that is 5 yards per carry. Keep pounding the rock .

  5. Ericb Says:

Of course you have to run the ball it has to be balanced and you have to change it up on the defense if they know your passing every play they will atop you i mean come on

Now that Arians is finally pounding the rock, let’s hope Leftwich gets a bit more creative and stops running up the middle all the time. Try some sweeps or off tackle runs.

As for a lot of RBs, the more ROJO gets the ball, the better he seems to get. This is particularly true once we get up by a couple of scores and have the opposing D on their heels.

  7. Mike Says:

The key is putting bodies on the D-Line and wearing them down over the course of the game. They can’t rush the passer as effectively if they have been beaten down all game long.

The Bucs will need a balanced attack in order to beat the @Rams in the playoffs. Run Rojo Run!

  9. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Bucs committed to running because they had the lead.
Will they abandon the run again if they fall behind?

RoJo having surgery to insert a pin in his busted pinky. Ugh.

And it only took them 13 weeks to figure that out!

Sure we should have kept the guy who threw 30 INT’s and fumbled 14 times to run an air raid offense.

It’s a little early for you to be hitting the bourbon today.
