Brady Quinn Blasts Bruce Arians

December 1st, 2020

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

Bucco Bruce Arians’ former CBS colleague shared disapproval of the Tampa Bay head coach following the gut-punch loss to the Chiefs on Sunday.

Joe’s referring to former NFL quarterback Brady Quinn, who has various gigs in NFL media including co-hosting weekdays on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Quinn dove into his view that the Bucs’ preseason hype was overhype and they’re nothing more than a low level playoff team this season. Like many ex-QBs, Quinn talked about how asking Tom Brady to have championship precision in a new offense with limited practice was too much of a reach.

But Quinn isn’t blaming Brady for the Bucs’ recent woes. He says it’s on Arians and Todd Bowles.

“They don’t take any accountability. When have you heard Bruce Arians get up there and say, ‘I need to do a better job coaching?'” Quinn barked. “I don’t hear him say that very often, if ever. Bottom line is they got outcoached. They got outcoached the last past weeks. I mean, you look at their system, you look at their offense, they don’t seem to make any changes. They get away from the running game to soon. And Tom Brady needs that so they have a semblance of balance because this offensive line isn’t as good as he’s traditionally had and been successful behind.”

Quinn wagged a finger at Bowles, who he described as stubborn when it comes to his schemes, for trying to defend Patrick Mahomes on Sunday in ways that simply don’t work against him. But Quinn acknowledged that the Bucs did many good things within their defensive gameplan over 60 minutes.

As for Brady, Quinn thinks he’s amazing but aging before fans’ eyes.

“There’s diminishing skills there, of course, he’s 43. And he doesn’t move quite the same. It’s a fair criticism but it’s the reality of the situation. What he’s doing 43 is incredible. It’s incredible. But that doesn’t mean he’s not diminishing to a degree.

“That’s evident. It’s there. I think where you see it is every once in a while he’ll make a throw and you’ll go, ‘Ooof. I don’t remember seeing that.’ And that’s where it’s just the body’s not reacting and it’s not as consistent as it normally is.”

Pressure on Brady, Quinn added reveals that he now needs all of his body to make certain throws. And those are often the ones he misses.

Joe disagrees with Quinn about Arians’ public accountability.

Joe’s heard Arians talk about needing to coach better, but he certainly goes there less often than most NFL coaches. There’s a confidence Arians has in his staff and his system that is admirable and earned, though Joe thinks that might work against the Bucs at times.

That was evident to Joe when Arians said earlier this year that, “You don’t hire strangers in my office, you hire guys I trust.” That’s a quite a different view than Father Dungy had when he set out to transform the Bucs.

How does talking about how they were out-coached matter? How does that make the team better? I know there are more eyeballs on the Bucs now with Brady and all the “expectations”, but most reputable media members had them 10-6 or 11-5, which is what they are on target for. They need to not listen to what everyone on the outside is saying, and focus internally to right the ship. The team has flaws, but could get hot at just the right time.

It’s funny, had the Bucs simply split the Rams/Chiefs games, the narrative would be a lot different. But alas, here we are 7-5. The Vikings game will be a very big game, but one the Bucs should win. Get that game and we should be feeling very good about making the playoffs, finally. Maybe I’m more optimistic than most, but this team could still achieve their goal of winning it all. It was never going to be easy.

  2. Mockman Says:

Quinn was a horrible QB what does he know about playing or coaching? He CLEARY never watches a press conference because I hear Ariens say coaching needs to be better too much.

Quinn can’t even be original and wants to get clicks and views like all the other below average football players. What better way to do it just say something about the most popular QB in the NFL ever.

  3. Lamarcus Guiton Says:

I dont think we can make the playoffs. If we had Jameis year 2 in the same system we could of been there. But no? BA wanted Brady and his friends and ever since Antonio Brown got here we been circling the drain

  4. Ed Says:

He states the obvious, bad schemes and bad starts. The character of this team with some exceptions is soft. It’s an immature approach to football. The offensive system doesn’t have the right personnel to be a deep ball threat. The receivers, particularly Evans, isn’t helping Brady when the pressure is there.

Defense has been horrible. Having the leagues’s #1 defense vs the run gives them no advantage against good qb’s that get rid of the ball to quick and nifty receivers who are always wide open.

Apparently the opposing coaches have read the book on the Buc defense and know how to attack it with efficient time eating drives. Completion percentages vs this defense have to be close to 75%.

I don’t see anything other than the players going to Bowles and Leftwich and getting more input into game planning. These coaches have lost whatever knowledge is needed to win games in the 2020 era.

  5. Joseph Mamma Says:

“You don’t hire strangers in my office, you hire guys I trust.”

Trust them for what? Arians has won one playoff game as a head coach.

This sums up the rampant trend of NFL coaches that hire family members and old buddies rather than the best person for the job. God for bid bruce might change his ways and learn something new by doing that. Stick with the tried and true ‘Old boy’s club’ with a nice dollop of nepotism.

  6. Clean House Says:

Joe, please explain how th confidence is admirable and earned?
    When was it earned?

  7. Ladleman Says:

This season is very similar to a few of Brady’s Super Bowl seasons including the last one against the Rams. Everybody wrote him off before he went on a run into the playoffs . I’m not saying it will happen this year but we’ve seen it before. Hell they were one play or one call away from knocking off the super bowl champions. Like I said , I’m not saying the bucs will go on a run and turn it around but at the same time I wouldn’t be surprised in the least.

  8. ModHairKen Says:

When a coach keeps saying I’ve got to coach better, and in close games, bad schemes, poor adjustments, and bad play calls on Offense keep costing them wins, what good is the admission?

Excuses, like stays, are for losers.

We will see what kind of character Arians has over the next 4 games.

Say what you will about the Glazers, they fired Dungy after making the playoffs and Gruden after going 9-7 two years in a row.

If Arians thinks he can just continue to hand off to his OC and then blame Brady, he’s going to be riding the short bus out of town real soon.

Enough talk, Bruce. You need 2-2 to make the playoffs. Get the damn job done.

  10. Tnoles Says:

Really??? Friggin Brady Quinn of all people OMG! You guys are nothing more than a click bait site and it seems like the only thing you publish is negative articles. Let me ask you Joe’s what is your solution since you guys have all insight just like the main stream media just keep on hyping something till it’s eventually believed. I did read a article today that was some what positive but come on man, this is the team I root for and not the team I don’t like so stop with ridiculous crap about what some washed up overrated qb has to say how about asking we the local fans think not some good ball who has no clue?? Tighten up Joe’s your losing your competitive edge by copying thoughts from losers who never did anything in the league like they are all that and a bag of chips. Out of the three of you Ira being one, non of you are real Bucs fansso give it a rest

  11. gotbbucs Says:

When Arians and his staff win a few playoff games and make it to a Super Bowl, their nonsense can be call “confidence”, until then it’s called “unproven arrogance”.

From what I can tell, and this is something that concerned me when I heard they were interested in hiring him as head coach, Arians offense can put up big numbers, but it also puts your QB in compromising positions and tends to get them beat up. It also puts alot of pressure on your O-line.

  12. Joe Says:

    Tnoles:

By your standard, Brady Quinn is light years smarter about football than Belicheat, Bill Walsh, Vince Lombardi, Joe Gibbs … and too many others to list. Why? Unlike Quinn, they never played one snap in the NFL. Combined!

You know what Andy Reid and Mike Tomlin, two guys with rings, have in common? They never played in the NFL. Joe sincerely doubts you would call all of these guys morons.

By your standards, Quinn is so much smarter than Tony Dungy. Dungy was a backup in the NFL. Quinn was a starter.

Guess in your eyes Mike Ditka was the smartest football man who ever lived. He’s in the Pro Football Hall of Fame — as a player.

Just because a guy’s playing resume isn’t up to your standards doesn’t mean he has no insight or contacts or inside information or football knowledge. And if you would only do a little math on Quinn’s background in football and his connections with a certain Bucs quarterback, you might not be so quick to rag on the guy for this subject.

It’s foolish if not stupid to judge whether a man knows his football based on his playing resume in the NFL. Don’t be that guy.

  13. Steve Gaudreau Says:

I’m having a hard time with all the hot air being expelled about the struggles the Bucs are having with accountability. It’s a team effort. That’s what is being missed. For every missed pass by the offense there is missed passes missed by the defense. When the team is on, both offense and defense, LOOK OUT! IT’S Scary! But I’ve seen imbalances on both sides of of the ball. That’s on the coaches to recognize and adjust. As for the players. Hey they’re the best of the best. To make it in the NFL they gotta do their jobs. Simple as that.

  14. Gofortheface30 Says:

Ahhhh here we go, it took all of two comments before we got the bottom of the barrel, lowest common denominator position of: “derrrrrr he wasn’t a good NFL Quarterback what does HE know derrrrrrr.” I stopped reading after that because it renders the rest of your HOT TAEEEK completely invalid. Louis Riddick wasn’t a hall of fame player so I guess he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Bill belichick too, gee did he even play? Nah I don’t want him as coach. I want Derrick brooks to coach this team. That’ll do it, because he was a great player! Awesome criteria a lot of you fans have

  15. TheBucsAnthem Says:

It’s clear as day that this offense isn’t suitable for Brady and his diminishing skillset.

Fire Bruce Arians and Byron Leftsuck………….then bring in an OC that will build an offense off of Brady’s skills

BA is too stubborn to change………..and BL just flatout sucks calling plays

  16. Bobby M. Says:

As far as scheme goes, there’s no play design that can replace Vea….nor is there any play design that can mask our poor secondary. Bowles hands are tied on that ….i just dont think there’s anything he can do.

If anything…..I go back to who built this roster. At some point you cant say ALL these guys that have long careers in the NFL suddenly cant coach while pretending a GM who has never done anything that remotely resembles success isn’t part of the problem. We should have signed the less sexy picks for depth on the o-line and secondary.

  17. Oneilbuc Says:

I thought Brady was going to come in and change everything ?? All summer long yall was saying with these weapons Brady is going to put up 5,000 yards with 40 touchdown passes . So what excuses yall going to give Brady 🤔 ?? Last year coaching was good it was Jamies fault . This year coaching is bad and it’s not Brady fault . Why yall have a double standard ???? Brady have not played good the pass 2 years . He was carried by Sony Mitchell and a number 1 defense in the last superbowl .

  18. Oneilbuc Says:

We will make the playoffs because the schedule is soft the last 4 games . But when the playoffs come it looks like we are going to be 1 and done .

  19. UKBuccaneer Says:

I don’t recall anyone saying anything about Brady throwing 5k yards. I do recall many saying we’d win more games with Brady under center. And we’re on track to do just that.

  20. Joe in Michigan Says:

UKBuccaneer: Exactly. I don’t remember anyone saying anything about 5,000 yards, either. The Bucs were 7-9 last year, 7-5 this year with 4 games left. Wins are all that matter.

  21. gotbbucs Says:

    @ Bobby M.

If you can’t see the talent on this roster then I don’t know what to tell you. The only thing I blame Licht for is having blind faith in Arians to make smart decisions with the roster.

  22. 0-26 survivor Says:

In my opinion the most glaring weakness of the offense especially on 3rd down is lack of a receiving back how many times with the pats was a drive sustained by white or other backs i think bucs should bring on Vaughn on 3rd down he sure looked good at vandy as a receiver what do they have to loose Brady needs a new security blanket, thanks Joe’s for awesome website as an original buc season ticket holder their has never been a better forum for buc news especially to a buc fan in panther territory
    Thanks

  23. Pewter Power Says:

He’s not wrong stubbornness and arrogance is why they are getting eaten alive by the media and they deserve it. They asked for this attention by asking a43 year old guy to throw it more than anyone in the league. He deserves it all but there is not enough criticism for the dummy calling plays

  24. Jmarkbuc Says:

    O’Neill

The ONLY reason we have a winning record is TB12.

P.S. Jaboo is still on the bench

  25. Oneilbuc Says:

Yall don’t remember because you don’t want to remember but I do !! I heard from some of the posters on here saying that Evans will be his Randy Moos . I heard that last year it was Jamies fault and the coaching staff was great . I heard that Bruce Arians was this great coach and his playbook was good it’s Jamies fault . I heard that we couldn’t run the ball because of Jamies . I also heard that Brady will make every body good . I also heard that the offensive line was good last year it was Jamies fault on why he was getting sack because he couldn’t read defenses . And now all I hear is that Bruce Arians needs to leave because his offense sucks . When I brought up the running game yall told me that was a excuse for Jamies . And now yall are saying we need to run the ball more . All these excuses yall said we was giving Jamies yall giving to Brady . The teams we beat Jamies would have beat them . Even the teams we lost to Jamies would have scored more points . Brady quit on us against the saints after the first quarter . Superbowl or bust Remember no excuses !!!!

  26. Oneilbuc Says:

Jmark We only beat bottom ranked teams and when play good teams we lose and yall make all these excuses for Brady . The raiders win is not that great now that we know there defense suck . I thought that game Brady played good in I was like he’s good go we can do something . Then I see how bad their defense is and I’m like this win was a win and it’s cool . And I thought Brady finally proved that he can play good against good defenses . The Packers it was the defense that won that game . Brady only had a 166 yards passing . So until Brady play good against good defenses he ain’t showed me nothing .

  27. Tnoles Says:

Well Joe you obviously didn’t read or understand my post. I don’t think Quinn is all that smart in fact, all those coaches you listed I think are in fact smarter than him so I’m not sure what your angle is??? I was simply saying I don’t take much stock in what this guy says is all.

  28. Jmarkbuc Says:

And we still have a winning record and Jaboo is still on the bench, in case I wasn’t clear.

  29. Bucamania Says:

He’s right. ‘I mean, you look at their system, you look at their offense, they don’t seem to make any changes.’

No changes. No creativity. No nothing.

  30. Joe in Michigan Says:

Oneilbuc: Who said all of this? You’ll have to be more specific than “y’all”.

  31. Joe in Michigan Says:

FYI: Brady has 28 more TD passes than Jameis this year.

  32. Random Says:

Who is Brady Quinn to say anything about anything. He couldn’t even make it on the NFL

  33. Joe Says:

Who is Bill Belichick to say anything about anything. He couldn’t even make it on the NFL

    See how stupid that sounds?

  34. Oneilbuc Says:

Jaymarkbuc It’s been said that the saints started Hill because of what happened to Bridgwater last year they didn’t want to lose Jamies the same way they lost Bridgwater . So they didn’t want to show what Jamies can do . Go look it up even yall people in the national media who hates Jamies comfirm it . But at the same time Brady haven’t played good against no good teams .

  35. Red Skeleton Says:

Isn’t Quinn still in the green room waiting to be drafted?

  36. Steve the Pirate Says:

Are we really caring what Brady Quinn has to say? Man, F@*!! Brady Quinn. The guy did not have one successful season in the NFL. Just another talking head who has it up his a$$. Go back to College GameDay.

  37. Kansas95Buc Says:

How many of you have played in the NFL? If you haven’t then your input dosen’t mean squat. See how that works. Everyday y’all prove Warren Sapp right….

  38. Fat Chupacabra Says:

Criticize Tom Brady all u want but they managed to finally slow down the Chiefs and were in that game. If they had slowed Tyreke down even a little bit the game was winnable. It took a career day by Tyreke for the Super Bowl Champs to beat Tom Brady and the Bucs. If they had played a better first half of defense they might’ve won.

  39. T REX Says:

tnoles is just butthurt his noles suck and will suck for the next decade.

    GO BUCS!

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Oneilbuc: You’re talking about other people making excuses, and you come up with this lamest of all the lame excuses of why Jameis isn’t playing?

  41. Oneilbucs Says:

Joe in Michigan Fact or facts just like Brady haven’t showed me nothing yet when it comes to playing good teams . All summer long yall were saying how Brady was going to make the hold team good and I told yall that no one man is going to make the team good . You can keep saying we are 7 and 5 but every win was against bad teams other than the Packers . We almost lost to the Gaints and yall goat played real bad . So yall can keep making excuses for Brady all you want but he ain’t prove nothing to me . It’s superbowl or bust !!! We don’t have time for Brady to get better he’s 43 years old . Next year time to move on because he will be worst next year I can promise you that .

  42. SuperDave64 Says:

Not as talented as people like to think and coaching sucks. To start, the O line has sucked for eons. Wirfs is a possible star. Mike Evans is no better than average. Godwin is an injury ready to happen. Best pass catcher on team, Cameron Brate, is under used. Ronald Jones and Leonard Fornette are not used right at all. Zero screen plays for the master of throwing them effectively. Byron Leftwich as the OC ??? A ex qb who could never read a NFL defense ?? Enough said.

  43. SuperDave64 Says:

Oneilbucs…….wow aren’t you just a bucketfull of knowledge and insight. Prove it to you?? Who are you again?? A nothing fan with a big mouth?? Just another opinion?? I do believe a 6 time SB champ doesn’t have anything else to prove on the field other than doing it at a plus 40 age. You talk how the Giants almost beat the Bucs. The Patriots almost beat the Chiefs. What’s your point? The 1 constant in Brady’s career at NE was a dominant offensive line. 18 yrs of protection equals 10 SB appearances with 6 wins and several MVP awards. Tampa Bay = worst franchise in history of NFL.

  44. Oneilbucs Says:

SuperDave We are all fans but I do have eyes Tom Brady have been on teams with top defenses his hold career . I know the national media have yall thinking that about Brady . But Brady has always been a dink and dunk quarterback . He’s always had a good running game and he has played in a trash division his hold career . Now again facts are facts . Name 1 year Brady played on a bad defense or offensive line ???

  45. Oneilbucs Says:

Brady has been trash against good teams and you just want to blame the coaches as a excuse for him . He’s not been good for the past 2 years and that’s a fact. Sony Mitchell ran the Patriots to the superbowl and plus they had a top defense . If you a Patriots fan yall can have yall fake goat . I name you a bunch of quarterbacks that was better than Brady .

  46. SuperDave64 Says:

Oneilbucs I guess you need glasses for them eyes you say you have. Name me a back from NE that had any type of career over 2 years with or with out NE. Corey Dillon was the only RB that could be considered, from his time in Cinncinati and James White as a recieving back. In 20 yrs he had a total of 5 that rushed for 1000 yards or more. 4 of 1263 yards or less. Dominant my ass. Yet 17 WRs had 1000 yrs or more. The Bucs won thiers on defense alone. Lived 23 years in Tampa and followed Bucs since John McKay days. You probably can name a bunch of guys better than Michael Jordan too. Doug Williams, Trent Dilfer, Steve Young all SB winning QBs the Bucs let get away. The Bo Jackson fiasco. Dungy was a joke and Gruden proved it. Oh and it was Monte Kiffens defense too.

  47. Oneilbucs Says:

Superdave64 What about Antoine Smith and Sony Mitchell look I hope next year you can take your fake goat who’s been on defensive lead team back to Boston where he belong. I told everyone that he’s old and haven’t look good in 2 years . We gave him more than we ever gave any other quarterback and he ain’t doing nothing with it . And people like you only make excuses for Brady . So I hated the move from day one . I knew this was going to happen remember the Titans game ?? Even some people in the national media is starting to blame Brady . No excuses !!!

  48. Oneilbucs Says:

Tony Dungy was the one who changed the culture for the bucs . And everyone knows that it was Dungy team . Brady is wash up !!!
