Todd Bowles’ Name Floated

December 23rd, 2020

Targeted by coachless teams.

It’s the middle of the holiday season. Most people have their minds on if they have maxed out their Visas yet or not.

Not NFL shot-callers of teams that have already launched their coaches are in the thick of a coaching search. And one guy who Mike Garafolo of NFL Network believes will be getting multiple interviews is Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Garafolo believes Bowles will be busy the next few days and it won’t be about crafting a gameplan to shut down Matt Stafford or assembling a bike at 2 a.m. to put under the Christmas tree.

Garafolo said NFL suits are willing to give Bowles a pass on what happened when he was with the Jets because the front office of the Jets is such a cesspool.

“I expect multiple head coaching interviews for Todd Bowles in the next couple of weeks here,” Garafolo said this morning on “Good Morning Football.”

“Good Morning Football” co-host Peter Schrager, a closet Bucs fan, thought Garafolo nailed the Bowles’ intel.

“You are spot-on,” Schrager said. “Todd Bowles is going to get interviews. And I would not be surprised if he is a head coach again next season.”

Joe would not be surprised at all if Bowles gets interviewed. Getting hired will be a bit different. Joe has harped a lot on the slow starts of the Bucs offense in recent months but the defense hasn’t been lights out to start games either. Why?

This is the price Bucs fans have to pay for a team that (finally) is in the middle of a playoff run. Assistant coaches will get cherry-picked by other teams.

This is a phenomenon Bucs fans haven’t experienced in a long, long time.

You can see and hear Garafolo’s full report in the NFL Network video below.

    Love…………..Absolutely LOVE Bowles’ Defensive scheming.

In the second half of games.

  2. Larry Says:

The game has changed. DC’s are important but most teams want offensive minded head coaches. Nick Saban said it. You use to win with defense, now you win with offense.

  3. David Says:

The OC and DC need to stay in Tampa another year or two to get better and better. Neither one of them have progressed much this year as a coordinator or as far as showing potential as a head coach.

Besides, why does every good and up-and-coming coordinator always have to be a head coach? Some of them aren’t cut out for it. Some are better as a coordinator.

  4. martinii Says:

From out of left field, what if BA departs. Would Bowls be a fit for the Buc’s? I’m not fully convinced that Offensive minded coaches make the best head coaches,

  5. Listnfrmafar Says:

Go get Bill O’Brien as HC and Matt Patricia as DC. Send the 3 stooges backing.

  6. Coburn Says:

He’s a mixed bag imo. I’m sure he will get interest because he still has respect but also because of the Rooney rule.. maybe even because of the incentives that might tip it in his favour

  7. Sourbob Says:

Wasn’t the Bucs run D pretty good and the secondary garbage before Bowles got here, whats changed?

  8. Buc50 Says:

Bill O’Brien??? Matt Patricia??? Somebody needs a drug test.

  9. Bucfan81 Says:

Damn what about Leftwhich no one wants him. We will give him away to any team that wants him. I like Bowles but his defense has been bad in the passing game for sometime now. Don’t know if that’s scheme, coaching or players.

  10. Allbuccedup Says:

Matt Patricia please, Lions defense ranks 30th in the NFL. Apparently when he was with the Pats Belicheat told him what to do.

  11. Allbuccedup Says:

Matt Patricia’s defense finished 30th in the NFL. I can’t see him getting a job with another team. Hes probably going back to the Pats with a quality control job or equipment manager.

  12. mark2001 Says:

Hate to say it, but the Defense the first Quarter of many games this year has looked like something “floating”…like in a toilet bowl. I hope this D plays among the top three or four in the next games. And then I think Bowles will be a serious candidate.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

This is a toughie. Love Todd Bowles as a DC, slow starts or not. From a personnel standpoint, the Bucs defense is pretty much average … as in middle-of-the-pack, largely because of our young, inexperienced Secondary and lack of depth. Right now we’re ranked #12, pretty close to ‘average’ in terms of performance. I’d say that Bowles has really brought them along well in his 2 years here.

Should he be considered as HC material? Certainly, but primarily by teams with a good offense but whose defense needs work. Much like Tony Dungy when he went to Indy (good offense; circumspect defense at the time). Tony also benefitted greatly here by having Monte Kiffin as his DC (allowed Tony to focus on just being a HC).

If that happened, should Todd be dual-hatted as HC AND DC, like Dirk Koetter was when he was promoted here? Heavens no, that’s the kiss of death for most HCs IMO. In other words, Todd would need a strong OC (to continue with the good offense) AND a strong DC (to help him rebuild the defense). Kinda reminds me of the Titans situation when they hired Mike Vrabel. He worked very well with the DC he hired (Dean Pees) largely because of their relationship back with the Patriots when Pees was the Pats DC.

Would Bowles make a good HC with the Bucs if Arians retires? I believe that he would because we have a strong DEFENSIVE heritage. But again, he’d need a strong OC AND DC to excel here, allowing him to focus on HC duties. I could see a lot of BA’s coaching staff being retained, but hopefully Bowles would be free to pick his own OC and DC.

  14. Listnfrmafar Says:

Check out how many times Bill O’Brien has made the playoffs as head coach and he’s a pretty good OC, Brady would confirm. Patricia is not a head coach and he has a 3-1 Superbowl record. Todd who??? Written with a clear mind.

  15. Wesley Says:

    I’m fine with this.

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

I realize there are only 32 jobs and people are leery about gambling and not pursuing an opportunity but smart, talented, SUCCESSFUL coordinators try to pick the best opportunity not just the first opening that comes along.

But TB far more than BL has some strong incentives to stay. If BA truly plans to coach at least next year and Brady plans on staying another season.

The Buc’s defense has been getting better and better due to our youth. Outside of perhaps an OL our draft can be focused on the D..another rusher a couple of hot DB prospects to compete…I’ve lost faith in SMB.

If Bowles thinks the Bucs can win 11 next year and be in the playoffs he’d be smart to stay. His defense is only going to get better and if he puts in that third year his opportunities could grow exponentially.

He won’t simply be rumored as a potential interview…he’ll be talked about like Chip Kelly and others who had multiple opportunities.

And let’s face it. One more year in paradise can’t be all that bad. And a chance to be part of a team that can become special.

If I’m Bowles I’m hanging on here in the belief my stock will continue to rise allowing a selection of the best opportunity.

Clue for anyone look to coach an NFL team. The J E T S are most assuredly NOT a golden opportunity. What a disaster. They make OBP look sharp.
