Tristan Wirfs Up; Shaq Barrett Down

November 24th, 2020

Bucs right tackle Tristan Wirfs

Joe’s second review of last night’s groin-stomp loss to the Rams revealed a real stunner in the trenches — and it adds to the pain.

Iconic Rams manbeast defensive tackle Aaron Donald surprisingly spent a chunk of the game lined up against Bucs rookie right tackle Tristan Wirfs, and Wirfs had little trouble at all with Donald in several 1-on-1 situations.

In fact, Wirfs stoned Donald all game long when he wasn’t relocated across the defensive line.

Donald did not show up on the final stat sheet. Goose eggs. And yet somehow the Bucs still lost after neutering the game’s best defensive player.

On the other side of the ball, Bucs edge rusher Shaq Barrett played the run well like he usually does, but he, like Donald, was little factor in the pass rush. Shaq was handled often in 1-on-1 situations, and Rams QB Jared Goff dropped back to pass more than 50 times.

Shaq also had a key offsides call on him and passed on a chance to drill Goff on Jason Pierre-Paul’s interception return. And it’s not the first time this season that Shaq didn’t crack a quarterback when given a chance.

Yes, Shaq’s a good player, but not the guy he was last season, which is a little deflating for the Bucs’ prospects in the playoffs.

    It is Brady’s fault!

    Run the freaking ball!!

  3. Sketch813 Says:

We should have went after a Clay Matthew’s or another veteran pass rusher instead of AB. Shaq is going to have to sign another prove it deal.

  4. ElioT Says:

Really disappointed with Barrett this year.

I wasn’t expecting 19.5 sacks again but he’s rarely flashing in games.

I know there are other circumstances here like Vita being out but we could really use some impact plays from Shaq.

This Chiefs game is going to be really tough, they’ve got so much speed and diversity in their scheme. If we can’t get pressure and contain Mahomes it could get ugly real quick.

  5. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Barrett was pretty good. Nobody on our team got really close to Goff.

  6. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

“…prospects in the playoffs.”? Really Joe, does this look like a team that we should even be having that conversation? BABL sucked. Brady sucked. So freaking disappointing.

  7. Half-Caucked Jeudy Says:

missing Vita for sure…..and Jameis Brady is off big time

  8. Anonymous Says:

Wirfs should be a All Pro…. he handled Donald easily.

  9. SOEbuc Says:

Wirfs is a monster. Shaq always finds some way to jump on 3rd and 5.

  10. Armando Ruiz Says:

Tristan is starting to look like the Paul Gruber of past. Shaq was an anomaly last year and has cost us two games this year. The problem with Brady is an egomaniac (self-proclaimed quarterback whisperer) coach and an incompetent offensive coordinator.

  11. Pewter Power Says:

At this point expect the Bucs to lose games against teams with a winning record. The coaches are delusional seeing something no one else sees. I expect to lose against good teams going forward and wild card is the only way I’m not catching the Saints

brady lost the game last night…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  13. Big_Buc$ Says:

Shaq will walk in free agency if Tampa doesn’t give him a new contract. My guess is he would go back to Denver because that would be a good fit for him in that defense and with Von Miller getting a year older and his production being impacted by his injuries is something to look at. As for the Bucs they are going to have to retool that offensive line. It would not surprise me if Smith and Jenson are released in the offseason due to the cap.

  14. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Licht has ignored the trenches his whole time as GM yet we have tons of receivers. What good is that if the QB doesn’t have time to throw.

  15. doctor_berto Says:

Thats why you go pass rusher at the top of the first round

  16. Sport Says:

Donald was disruptive regardless of the stat sheet. I would think Joe being a football blogger/opinion writer would have learned that you can still impact a games outcome without getting on a stat sheet, especially linemen.

Wirfs is quietly taking care of business.

Shaq is earning his next contract. Somewhere in the middle of the payscale. Not top money like he was posturing for with his agent.

    In BA I Trust!

If we lose any games after the bye we WILL NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. Brady let us down last night badly. That arm is done gimmie Ryan Griffin idc idc idc whatcha say. As far as the AB haters leave be the man is playing ball and that’s all. Proud of him. Online played lights out to me. That damn Fournette isn’t any better at catching passes either Joe 🤬🤬😒. Jamel Dean and Sean Murphy will be the reason we draft 2 more CB in this upcoming draft they have regressed tremendously since the packers game and C.Davis better tighten tf up. Just imagine if we didn’t have JPP smh this defense would be last in the league. Thank God we didn’t give “Shaq Wack” that money. AND YA BOY DEVIN WHITE IS ASS IN COVERAGE COMPLETELY TRASH

I watched Shaq all night, just waiting for him to make a big play. Never happened. He’s being man handled by bigger tackles this year.

  19. SlyPirate Says:

They moved Shaq to the opposite side he played last year. Why?

  20. Bucamania Says:

Wirfs is all-stud. Barrett is invisible. Always a step away. Doing his best Noah Spence impression in 2020.

    LOL
That’s funny, but I wouldn’t be that hard on him. He locks down the edge like a champ. Spence couldn’t rush *and* couldn’t contain the run game.

I thought they used to alternate last season. Maybe I’m wrong.

  23. TOM Says:

Shaq may be gone next year and Smith should definitely be gone. Possibly Brate although he’s quietly having a pretty good year. I think J. Rosen should be given a chance to be starting QB at some point. Gabbert& Griffin aren’t the answer. Or draft a QB. But I believe they should concentrate On the Ol & DL first.
