Starting Fast Doesn’t Exempt Defense

November 23rd, 2020

Slow start, strong ending.

Look, Joe is not going to fully rag on the defense. They held the Rams to 10 points in the second half, and much of it held the Rams to a touchdown allowing the Bucs to stay within striking distance.

The Bucs offense of late has been awful in the first quarter. Entering the month of November, the Bucs were just a hair behind Seattle and Detroit for No. 3 in the NFL in first quarter scoring.

The month of November? The Bucs have fallen all the way to No. 7, averaging 6.5 points in the first quarter. And that isn’t factoring in Monday night when the Rams held the Bucs scoreless in the opening quarter.

This struggle shouldn’t mean the defense needs to wake up at halftime. The Rams carved up the Bucs in the first half.

Now again, Todd Bowles and his defense did a fantastic job in the second half to keep the Bucs within a score and preventing a blowout with stop after stop.

But just because the offense has been hibernating in the first quarter this month doesn’t mean the defense gets to show up when they feel like it.

Dean got hurt, and the defense magically got better

***reality is we are a heartbeat away from 7-5 with the champs coming in this weekend***

there is a big difference between 8-4 and 7-5…

now we must send the chiefs home with a loss

  3. Bangkok Buc Says:

Bucs D played much, much better in the 2nd half. But, they sucked in the first quarter, got picked apart in their zone coverage and were gassed as the offence was hot garbage.

Please no more prime time games. This is getting embarrassing

  4. ElioT Says:

    Where’s Shaq Barrett?

    Glad they only Franchised him.

No saying he’s bad but he isn’t making a pay-day next year!

  5. Snook Says:

Bowles is just as much to blame. We were up 14- 3 and he insisted on playing zone until we were down 17-14 at half. Held them to 10 when he quit playing zone all the time. F this coaching staff. We finish 9-7. Imagine what Ryan and Julio do to a zone defense.

  6. Will Says:

I love the halftime adjustments but can we maybe adjust sooner? Kinda like we did in the Green Bay game. The offense wasted a great 2nd half by the defense.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Snook…..we were never up 14-3

Sure the defense gave up some points…..especially that FG at the end of the half……but they kept us in the game.

    The offense was totally impotent……3 & outs & turnovers…

Brady is 0-2 with game winning drives…

  8. Same-Narrative87 Says:

I feel like Joe is upset at Bowels making halftime adjustments. After being upset at Bowels for not making halftime adjustments in the past?

    Question mark??

  9. Bojim Says:

    Was anyone on Kupp tonight??????

Snook. when were we up 14-3?

Defense stepped up in the 2nd half. The offense wilted like a flower.

Evans was going off and they stopped getting him the ball.

Leftwich doesn’t know how to call a game against a decent defense. He’s outmatched every single time. Brady and Arians are washed up

  15. Rod Munch Says:

Stop sitting in a soft zone on 3rd downs.

    Just stop doing that.

    No riskit, no biscuit.

Go blitz the QB and stop giving them 15 seconds to read the field and pick the d apart.

  16. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

376 yards passing by Goof?! with NO running game. I just do not understand how that happens. And Kupp had over 100 yards at the half and finished with 146. Not such a great defense. The game is 60 minutes

  17. Pewter Power Says:

Nope can’t talk about the defense was good for a half or in this or that quarter. Can’t have it both ways when that’s not acceptable from the offense. They stink in zone and it’s heavily deployed even when it’s not working. Stop all the celebrating because they simply aren’t good against the pass or in prime time.

The teams beating us are the teams we’ll face in the playoffs. We’re consistently out coached and this team just does not looked prepared for the good teams

  18. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Very overrated defense. No pass rush and soft coverage with Ram receivers wide open all night long despite knowing they were passing on every down. Horibke tackling and costly penalties. Shaq disappeared and was loafing. A one year wonder.
