Loss Is On AriansLeftwich

November 23rd, 2020

Torpedoed Bucs tonight.

Joe has no firm evidence if Bucs head coach Bucco Bruce Arians has full control and/or final say on plays or if offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich is in complete control, or if it is a hybrid of sorts.

So Joe is calling out AriansLeftwich on this loss.

AriansLeftwich apparently have no clue that for reasons unknown, park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, jet ski-losing Bucs quarterback Tom Brady cannot throw deep any longer.

Correction: Brady can throw deep, he’s just nowhere near his receivers.

AriansLeftwich seemingly had no clue, despite being buried in oodles of stats NFL teams drown in, that Brady entering the game was 1 for 13 in passes over 20 yards the past three weeks.

Has Brady lost his long-ball magic? Has Brady developed a tired arm — you know that’s coming? Has Father Time finally caught up with the 43-year old? Do all of Brady’s targets run garbage routes over 20 yards?

Your guess is as good as Joe’s but Joe does know this: Only a fool or someone blinded by arrogance continues to go to the well time after time when a slob on a couch at home can see it isn’t working. When you are asking a player to accomplish a task he has demonstrated he cannot accomplish, that is squarely on AriansLeftwich.

And yet, there was Brady all night launching long passes, as if nothing was wrong.

If a high school coordinator tried that stunt, he’d get his arse chewed out. And deservedly so! AriansLeftwich ought to be ashamed of himself!

AriansLeftwich wasted a remarkable second-half defensive performance, holding the Rams to one touchdown until the second-last Rams’ drive.

AriansLeftwich needs to stand in front of the defense and plead for forgiveness. This is absolutely on AriansLeftwich. That’s all there is to it.

Late in the game the Bucs found their running game (yet again, AriansLeftwich earlier acted like they broke out in hives from calling run plays), and Brady seemed to find his groove throwing short passes.

Then, all together now, AriansLeftwich decided to start throwing deep. Interception!

Last Joe checked, in the past four games, including Monday night, Brady is now 1-for-17 with two picks on passes over 20 yards.

AriansLeftwich has some splainin’ to do!

Shame on AriansLeftwich for tonight’s shameful offensive display.

  1. Wesley Says:

    And the secondary.

  2. Davenport Says:

The headline says it all …. they dont know what to do with Brady. He is NOT a deep ball thrower, but they keep forcing him into that style.

  3. CChead Says:

Arians and Leftwich are the most overrated coaches in the league

  4. Miller5252 Says:

100% onboard with this article. It seems when it don’t work, get a bigger F’n hammer and make it I guess.

  5. Tackleblockwin Says:

We have no creativity on the offensive side of the ball.

  6. ModHairKen Says:

Arnold Jackson called another horrible game. Jones could not break tackles. Brown and Fournette dropped passes. Brady had a Ram in his face all game.

And yet they lost by only 3 points and were in it until the end.

Dust it off. Get ready for KC.

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

nahhh the loss in on the 50 million dollar man. he can’t roll left or right, he can’t run and a little pressure breaks him down. But I told you guys this when we acquired him.

  8. garbs65 Says:

    Agree. Our secondary is shxtty.

  9. Ateonetree Says:

    Is Rosen ready yet?

  10. bucfanforever Says:

Maybe they should review some tape of Evans coming back just past the first down sticks 10x a game for the last 5 years to see how to manage an offense.

  11. T REX Says:

Arians is old news. Leftwich is a turd in waiting.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think Brady chose to go deep on several passes on his own……but, I do agree the playcalling was terrible all night…

Instead of play action, we went to empty backfields….

    And…..did we even touch Geoff?

  13. Pewter Power Says:

100% on the coaches. Always putting up big offensive number doing one thing and will go into a big game trying to get fancy. Arians going to put his chances of his first Super Bowl in the hands of leftwich he will fail. Dude sucks

Funny how this defense was able to continuously execute celebrations all night but can’t show up when it counts. Secondary is not fixed and never turned a corner

  14. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Joe please preach this all week to the Bucs. They need to play to Brady’s strengths and that is dinking and dunking like everybody else in the league is pretty much doing. Let your playmakers make plays. Brady just manage the game buddy. Go Bucs! Hopefully we learn from this.

  15. destinjohnny Says:

    and jason licht

  16. Bangkok Buc Says:

Coaching didn’t help but Brady just sucked tonight.

  17. Miller5252 Says:

Could you imagine if one of the young talented creative coach’s in the league had this many weapons what they’d draw up??? We just run the ball up the guy twice and say F it and start throwing it everywhere.

  18. Will Says:

I had literally just said stick with the short game on the open thread and then they go deep. Play to your players strength and right now the deep ball is not I repeat is not a strength of Brady. If I’m Rojo I want out of Tampa I don’t understand why he keeps getting pulled.
I’m with you Joe we’re not sure if BA has final say on the play calls but something needs to give.

  19. Wes Says:

We need some accountability within this coaching staff

  20. adam from ny Says:

    #BigTroubleInLittleTompa

  21. BDub Says:

I’m ready to run AriensLeftwich the hell out of town. You broke the GOAT you effing crap sacks. Hop on your hover-round golf cart and both of ya get the hell out of Tampa.

  22. Jee Says:

    Leftwich is completely clueless.

  23. Bubba from Philly Says:

Is it ironic that the last time the deep balls were connecting it was Scotty Miller catching them? Brady/Miller had quite a few good connections. Once AB came in it’s been less Miller and less deep completions.

  24. Anonymous Says:

If Evan’s is the focul point on that last drive, we leave with the W. Brady needs to understand Evan’s is his weak arm savior.

  25. Bucs14 Says:

Is it Tom Winston, or Jameis Brady?

Arians/Leftwich meh. Bottom line. Brady is showing some age. It happens to all of us after 40.

  26. ClwJB Says:

He gets flustered when pressured and plays like JW – just throws it up for grabs

    It’s been multiple games now – it’s a pattern

Also, have no idea why you would apologize to that HORRIBLE DEFENSE!!!!!!! They can’t cover a cold, they can’t tackle

JPP makes a lucky play and Whitehead reads one of 47 completions – no sacks, no pressure- on their heels over and over –

Has all the old coaches never heard of maybe calling a TO to slow down their momentum? Obviously not

If the Rams can do this, what do you think the Chiefs are going to to?

    7-5 here we come

  27. Joe Says:

They need to play to Brady’s strengths and that is dinking and dunking like everybody else in the league is pretty much doing. Let your playmakers make plays.

    Thank you.

  28. ElioT Says:

    100% agree.

The offensive scheme seemed like they were down 21 the whole game.

No slants, don’t try to establish the run (yet continue to attempt long PA passes).

Out coached and Brady played a bad game.

    No identity on offense.

    Zero creativity.

  29. SOEbuc Says:

Bowels continues this zone with the blitz and teams are eating up yards. Dean and Davis are cover corners.

  30. Jerome Says:

Your best article of the year. Infuriating to watch as fans. It’s pure hubris to not try to adapt to your players. Ariana was asked why this is happening post game and he gave a typical coach speak answer about execution. If it doesn’t change, I’m not sure we make the playoffs

  31. Patrick Says:

And let’s not forget how bad of a quarterback Leftwich was for us in 2009 when he was playing here

  32. HeyItsAdam Says:

If you wanted to run the Jameis offense, why did you get rid of Jameis?

  33. Coburn Says:

They had a lot of success just throwing quick passes early and even getting tight ends involved . No idea why they got away from it. It seems they’ve been almost allergic to throwing to tight ends last couple of weeks despite having success when they’ve done it

  34. EA Says:

Well whatever chemistry Brady developed with Scotty Miller you can kiss goodbye because now he is giving all the attention to his new target, antonio brown.

  35. Hodad Says:

Hey Joe, who you calling a slob on the couch? I was in my recliner! But I could still see the deep ball wasn’t working. Hasn’t been for weeks as you say. We can beat average teams, but Arains, and crew keep getting out coached against equal talent. That’ll never change, hence this team is going nowhere.

  36. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Brady and these weapons would THRIVE if the offense was tailored to them. Instead we are forcing an offense from 5 years ago on them, with a playcaller who does not understand his team’s strengths, his opponent’s weaknesses, or game situations.

No creativity. No adjustments. Bad coaching.

  37. Bojim Says:

I agree with Joe and everyone else. Still SMH.

  38. Jazzy Says:

They intentionally made themselves one dimensional which made them so predictable. I just have no words. The defense didn’t play amazingly at times but gave the offense plenty of opportunities to put the game away. They need to quit eating all the hype so they can quit trying to be something they are not.

  39. Mirrormirroronthewall Says:

    Joe,

How are Arians and Leftwich responsible for the inaccurate throws and interceptions that Brady threw? Brady just does not have the arm anymore. Just need the Bucs to lose to the Chiefs.😉

  40. snookman Says:

it amazes me how you people dont understand football…….Neither of these teams will go anywhere this season…………IF YOU CANNOT RUN THE BALL YOU CANNOT WIN IN THE NFL. The run eats clock, maintains drives, and diversifies the play calling. Noticed in the games we won this year,,,,,,,,,we ran the ball. Now, the rams couldnt run much either but they knew our secondary was worse than ours and knew they could attack us at our weakness………..secondary. We tried to do the same thing and came up short. This game would have been a blow-out either way if either team could run the ball.

  41. Joe Says:

How are Arians and Leftwich responsible for the inaccurate throws and interceptions that Brady threw?

Is Brady calling his own plays now?

Or is Tom Moore calling plays now and Joe just isn’t aware of it?

  42. unbelievable Says:

Loss is on Arians, Leftwich AND Brady!

Brady is a loser in prime time. Those interceptions were worse than Jameis.

Gee, almost like some of us called this in the off-season

  43. Jazzy Says:

Did they lock mccoy in the closet before the game?

  44. Alaskabuc Says:

Glad you brought this up right out of the gate Joe. I am so effing perplexed at why we have one of the greatest to ever play the game, that can still obviously read a defense, not playing to his strong suits. BA/BL need to adjust the offensive game plan to highlight Brady’s greatest attributes, not greatest deficiencies.

  45. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

“When you are asking a player to accomplish a task he has demonstrated he cannot accomplish, that is squarely on AriansLeftwich.”
    .
    .

I remember hearing AriansLeftfoot talk about putting players “in a position to succeed.” Funny we are not seeing it with Brady. No play action and home run swings when there was ample time to get into FG range.

  46. Tampabaybucfan Says:

BL keeps saying he wants to put players in a position to succeed….but yet he doesn’t.

  47. Soggy Says:

It’s like they know it will not work but they do it anyways, last couple minute drive and they do what has not worked all night, seems fishy to me, is the NFL getting like big time wrestling FAKE?

  48. Anonymous Says:

So we bring in NE12 @ 50mil to be competent 75% of the time! Get off of Leftwitch…I didn’t see him do no harm or throw one pass tonite …get your golden goat in front of the camera and let him let BUCS WORLD down easy by telling the fans he’s no longer the GOAT, that he is becoming gun shy…overthrowing passes because he is just not sure of himself anymore and hey stoped passes by our running backs didn’t help!!! I picked to be 11 wins and and 5 losses ….there is still time to fight back!!!

  49. PuertoRicanBucFan Says:

I said this once and I’ll say it again,” this is the most overrated staff in the history of the NFL!!” Leftwich only jas a job in this league because of Arians.

  50. Oneilbuc Says:

Tampabaybucfan No blame Brady like yall did Jamies last year . Brady threw a int to lose the game !! Remember he’s yall goat . I told yall it’s Brady haven’t showed me nothing keep that same energy for Brady that yall had for Jamies . Because yall will be killing him right now !!!

  51. Mike Johnson Says:

Biggest coaching staff in the NFl..The tampa Bay Bucs. And the slowest Qb in the NFl too!

  52. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

    Pewter Power Says:
“Funny how this defense was able to continuously execute celebrations all night but can’t show up when it counts.”
    .
    .
I’m about tired of seeing that shiz. They should save that stuff for the Easter egg hunt, and try to act like grownups. What happened to the excessive celebration rule??

  53. Buc Bro Says:

Arians is 14-13 as Bucs coach.

No matter the QB he doesn’t adjust his scheme to the players or their strengths and routinely gets outcoached by creative play callers and coaches.

Rams have a 1st year Defensive Coordinator who outcoached Leftwhich, badly.

Bucs had the ball with plenty of time, Rams were playing a 2 deep look all night Bucs just needed to short pass their way down the field but Nah, Byron had to call another deep shot.

The lack of situational coaching is so inept I am not even mad as I am use to it

  54. BigMacAttack Says:

Joe you are 100% correct in your assessment. BA got greedy on the last pick when the game or a tie was well within hand. And why stop running the ball. I don’t get it and I know Tom feels bad But terrible call.

  55. Onetrickpony Says:

Leftwich couldnt call the hogs in,let alone football games.

  56. Mirrormirroronthewall Says:

    Joe,

If they play to Brady’s strength that is an indictment that Jameis was setup to fail.

  57. Bucsd4life Says:

I think the defense is playing great football. I have recently noticed that the Bucs started the season playing a tight man coverage with that aggressive front four that have been doing a great job stopping the run. Then for the past three weeks they started playing a zone coverage. And any average QB / Coach team can slice right through that coverage. Today the secondary had a tough time tackling as well. They made Cooper Kupp look like a future hall of fame receiver. They need to go back to man to man coverage. And play more physical in the secondary.

  58. August 1976 Buc Says:

Just like the Bears game, Brady is throwing a long low percentage throw. This is not just on BA and BL, Tom can can hit the check down. When others teams sit back and dink and dunk on the Bucs, why are they not doing the same thing. Why let football be more complicated. Simply dink and dunk down the field and win the Game. This loss is very much on Brady, not just the playcallers. GO BUCS!!!!

  59. Rod Munch Says:

“1 for 13 in passes over 20 yards the past three weeks”

That’s a nonsense stat – how many PI calls does he get that would have increased that number?

I don’t see an issue with throwing deep, I see an issue with judgement. That last pass to Brate wasn’t a poorly thrown ball, I just have no idea why in the world he threw it. It was worse than any game ending INT I ever recall Winston throwing, at least with those you could generally see something on offense happened that was unexpected (Jensen tackling Dare on the screen wk 1 vs 49ers) or the defense was sitting on the playcall, like the last pass (to Brate) in wk 17. But that Brady pass to end it – no idea what in the world Brady was doing there, he had three defenders around and it’s Brate, he’s not going to beat anyone or make some amazing play.

If you want to call out Arians Leftwich, then call them out for having Brate on the field. Brate lost the Houston game for us by dropping that 4th and 3 with 3 mins left at the Houston 30. Brate is even somewhat responsible for losing the ATL game when he just stood there instead of coming back to the ball. Brate is fine when it’s 2nd and 6 in the 2nd quarter, but he should never be out there when it matters, he’s just not that good.

  60. Defense Rules Says:

As bad as the Bears & Saints losses were, this one was a lot more heart-breaking because it didn’t have to turn out as it did. Yet another loss that can be laid squarely at the feet of poor Bucs’ coaching.

Offensively there’s no excuse for not doing a better job with this accumulation of talent. Credit the Rams defense, but at the same time we wasted opportunity after opportunity last night to put together some decent drives. It’s been obvious for quite awhile that AriansLeftwich are waaay out of their league. They’re being out-coached by the better coaches in this league like Payton & McVey on a regular basis.

Defensively I just keep shaking my head. Todd Bowles is an excellent DC IMO, and he seems to be particularly good at making 2nd half adjustments. But he also appears to be stubborn as all git-out, and keeps doing the same things over-and-over-and-over expecting different results (and we know what that’s the definition of). Our pass rush became non-existent when Vea went down, and without a pass rush our LBs & our young Secondary are getting eaten alive … and especially when playing so much zone.

We’re doing an excellent job of defending the run, but in the process we’re giving QBs all the time in the world to find an open receiver. I don’t know what Goff’s final numbers were, but in the 1st half I think they said he was 21-for-25. Sorry, but that’s NOT good defense; it’s a prescription for losing.

This loss, like our others, is on coaching.

  61. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yes, bad coaching, but also (IMHO):

    1) Bad QB play, Tom Brady looks terrible against good defenses.
    2) RB’s who can’t catch the ball.
    3) LT who half the time looks like he’s not even trying to block.

  62. Big Red Ed Says:

Practice is dress rehearsal for wins. Bradys long ball issues should have been addressed during practices. If they play to his strengths which seems to be throwing short passes in the pocket within 3 seconds like he did in NE to edelman and gronk this offense would move down the field with authority. And get the running game going!!!

  63. Dan Williamson Says:

I said it last night. The play calling sucks. Donovan smith sucks, our defensive line without vita sucks and that makes our secondary suck. First thing that needs to be addressed is our LT problem. We dont protect our QB. Simple as that. He can throw the long ball, but first the route has to he run properly and the GOAT needs time. Hes harassed , hurried and sacked. Arians or leftwiche needs to stop calling plays for a couple weeks and then quit altogether.

  64. ben green Says:

i watched the guy for 20 years, every game
your o line sucks!!! they can’t even run block. arians is a terrible coach. leftwich calls plays about as well as he played. it’s a bunch of loosers. they should’ve installed a variation of the pats system, just like they did for manning. best case for yall is if ba and bl catch covid for the rest of the season

  65. Umer Says:

Finally somebody pointed to the heart of the problem.
This coaches are trying to use Brady presence in Bucs to advertise themselves not win at all cost

  66. Oneilbuc Says:

Yall please stop with the coaching is the blame stuff . Because this lost would have been Jamies fault and not the coaching .

  67. Ericb Says:

It was totally moronic to throw deep passes all game long ..furst one almost got picked off second one picked off..the short passing game was working…plus there was plenty of time on the clock left at the end of the game to run the ball or keep methodically marching it down the field to eat the clock up for a td or field goal!!!!! We just needed a field goal!!!!!!..the coaches have hoorible play calling …no situational football awareness..no schemes..no adjustments and overall horrible gameplan with no backup plan …the long ball bs isnt going to work on the number one team against the pass and number one team with fewest passing tds allowed!!!!

  68. Patsfan87 Says:

Rams pinning their ears back with all out pressure and Bucs throw their first screen pass with 3 minutes left in the game. When was the last time you saw a draw play.? There are scheme methods that keep the d line honest. Arians didn’t use them at all. Terrible offensive scheme.

  69. Maurice Williams Says:

Secondary was horrible, they have a beast mode running back and dont use him. And when you do run its always up the middle instead of mixing it up and letting TB pitch it to the back outside. And set two backs and fake one. And you have playmakers at receiver and tight end so just get them some short passes so they can go to work. Un freaking real!!!

  70. ben green Says:

amen Patsfan87. josh mcdaniels should be the head coach next year but, it’ll never happen because it’s a junk franchise run by incompetents

  71. SlyPirate Says:

It’s simple. The Bucs win when they are the more talented team on paper. When it’s even, they get out coached.

  72. Smashsquatch Says:

Out coached on both sides of the ball, plain and simple.

  73. T REX Says:

Two turds waiting to be flushed.

And then back to the basement.

  74. Chris Says:

Pats fan here, Brady wore down last year and its been a long stretch without a bye. I think you all have enough talent to let Brady manage the game, but, even 2 years ago when he won his SB, the days are over, to expect Brady to sit back and sling it 35-40 times. You need to establish the running game or short passing game, so, Brady can stay ahead of the chains at this point in his career.

Last year, by this point in the season teams were flooding the middle zones and daring him to throw it deep. We all blamed the lack of talent in NE, but, I have seen a steady, definite decline over the past few years.

Arians needs to understand what he has and protect his 43 year old QB, if he thought he was getting Brady from 3-4 years ago, then he never watched any tape. Brady looked great last year in the first part of the season, but, could not beat good defenses as the year went on. I see the same thing this year.

  75. Joe Says:

    Chris:

    All very good points.

Interesting (Joe wrote about this last week), Brady’s slump late in the season last year was noticeable both with the eyeballs and the stats. This year, so far, Brady in the second half of the season is much better except for the long passes. He’s turned truly brutal at that.

    Thanks for checking in!

  76. rt Says:

Offensive coaching was terrible. Brady should be allowed to do what he does well. And, that’s getting rid of the ball quickly for shorter, yet very efficient passes. He seldome threw deep while at New England the past few years. Leonard Fournette cannot catch a three yard pass.

  77. Jennylee123 Says:

All I know was at the start of the season, everyone was talking about Brees not being able to throw the long ball and Brady still had it. Payton did the best thing, drew up plays that played to Brees strength. Brres beat Brady twice, but some Tampa fans still think Saints aren’t SB contenders? But the Bucs are? How does that work?

  78. Snowman Says:

I dont understand how everybody can blame tom. I’ve played qb and its a very hard thing to throw to somebody when you can’t block anybody. And when you can’t set your feet and throw cause you have no time it sux. They need to revamp there o line then you can blame Tom. Wtf

  79. Snowman Says:

I dont understand how everybody can blame tom. I’ve played qb and its a very hard thing to throw to somebody when you can’t block anybody. And when you can’t set your feet and throw cause you have no time it sux. They need to revamp there o line then you can blame Tom. Wtf

  80. Oneilbuc Says:

Snowman how come it’s a problem now that Brady is on the team . Jamies got beat up last year in fact some of his picks were thrown while he was getting hit . But no one cared are gave him that excuse . For me my point is it took Brady to be on the team before yall realized that the offensive line was a problem .

  81. Anthony Paganico Says:

Brady is 75and 2when the team runs 35 times or more
And short to intermediate passes. He can throw deep just
Not 40 times a game. And yes Miller needs to be involved more
AB.does not. Take what the D gives. Coaches are ego driven hacks at this point

  82. Oneilbuc Says:

So now can we blame Bruce Arians for Jamies ??
