Former Buccaneer Calls Out Coaching

November 29th, 2020

Todd Bowles is among the coaches targeted

Joe loves when ex-player analysts who collect a check from Team Glazer wield a heavy and honest hammer.

A co-host of the Buccaneers Radio Network postgame show is former Bucs tight end John Gilmore. And he very calmly explained after today’s gut-punch loss to the Chiefs that the Bucs were “outcoached” — again.

Gilmore thinks the bye week is desperately needed for the Bucs’ coaching staff because “the Bucs are becoming very predictable” on offense. And Gilmore specifically called out coordinators Byron Leftwich and Todd Bowles as guys who really need extra time to “self-scout” and “take a hard look” at their respective units.

Specifically on offense, Gilmore said it’s too easy for him to sit back and “call the plays that are happening” as the games are being played.

And like a choir of ex-Bucs have been saying in recent weeks, Gilmore said the Bucs’ commitment to their run game just isn’t enough and Tom Brady needs that commitment.

The shaky run commitment, per Gilmore, doesn’t make sense because the Bucs have talented running backs and it’s a problem that extends beyond today’s loss to the Chiefs.

Joe agrees with Gilmore. The Bucs offense is good but it has little rhythm and is a little predictable, especially early in games. And it sure feels like Ronald Jones might be the only running back to have a 198-yard game and then not be featured in the following two weeks.

Pablo did not vote for Carlton Davis to the pro bowl!

  2. Robert James Says:

gilmore was on top of our free agency board one year. Thats what chucky dealt with… a blocking TE. Gilmore is right!

  3. unbelievable Says:

    Um, hellloooooooooo?

Some of us have been telling you this all year, and even going back to last season!

No creativity. No misdirection. No disguise.

Just line up, telegraph what we’re doing, and hope our players outmuscle the defense.

  4. Architek Says:

I wish I had the resume and credentials to call out coaching because I would drag the coaches through the mud!

  5. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

I seriously hope we have a new HC and OC next season. This is too painful to watch.

  6. BigMacAttack Says:

I wish I had a like button here because I’d like every comment above as well as Gilmore’s assessment. Man up Bucs!

  7. Nick Says:

I’ve been saying this for weeks now, the 2020 Bucs defense is wildly overrated.
Offensively the coaches need to stop being so damn stubborn and mix in more quick passes and obviously more guys in motion.

  8. BucsBro Says:

Gilmore is right. Scrap the deep throws and go to more run game and more play action. Once they started to use play action in the middle of the game everything opened up and Brady looked like Brady.

Also, work on the pass protections. Forget about the five-step drop deep balls. Learn how to block a blitz and run block first.

Team needs to simplify things and let the big play come off the small plays, not the other way around.

The offense had it going today once it got going. Only poorly-handled KC pass rush slowed it down (forced 2 Brady picks).

It’s all there on the tape. Should be easy to piece together.

  9. Mirrormirroronthewall Says:

The coaches need to stop throwing interceptions. After the coaches threw interceptions, the defense held, but the defense should have scored. Much improvement is needed.

  10. dmatt Says:

Does anyone know the reason for BA taking RoJo out the game? Why did he abandon the run game? And, does toe tapping 1 yd or less Fournette average more yds than RoJo? What’s going on here?

  11. BucsBro Says:

Oh yeah, I don’t think we’ll be hearing so much about “Brady can’t throw deep” now, either. But the deep balls were coming off play action and simple calls, not anything fancy or reckless.

  12. Bucamania Says:

Remember when the Bucs D tore apart the Packers? Seems like years ago.

The offense is very vanilla and predictable. The book is out. Time to write some new chapters.

  13. JimmyJack Says:

I dont get the run committment part. How are youre gonna stay committed to the run when you start the game with 7 consecutive 3 and outs?

If your only running 3 plays youre not getting enough chances to run the ball.

The only committment I wanna see is a committment to not punting the ball every 3 plays.

I thought we had a good mix of runs and short RB passes in the second half.

  14. Will Says:

If I’m Rojo I’m telling my agent to get me out of Tampa. The guy has a good run and then has to go sit the bench. Has a great catch and run for a TD then has to go sit the bench. They talk about riding the hot hand but they won’t let him get hot and stay hot. Smh

  15. DBS Says:

And no I don’t want to hear about Bowles or Leftwich being the next Head Coach here. I grantee they make no changes after the bye. Rest up and more of the same.

  16. CChead Says:

Gotta give Rojo more than 9 carries. Wtf

  17. Junckey Says:

Tampa is the worst franchise in sports, will NEVER be anything aside from the laughing stock of the league. They stink it primetime for a reason, shy away from the big moments. LOSERS!

  18. Red86 Says:

Wonder how our d end number 98 can cover in a zone? That’s ridiculous to keep having d ends in coverages.

Agree that the lack of running hurts the whole team.

  19. Beeej Says:

Godwin goes in motion: run up the middle

  20. #1bucfan Says:

I don’t understand the play calling. There’s absolutely no reason why we shouldn’t be able to out score any team wit this talent. Brady had plenty of time all game to throw and we should be running the ball way more

  21. Beastman Says:

I agree the coaching is slow acting. But how many touch downs does it. Take. By same reciever. Before you. Realize cb getting beat. Also when do you realize as coaching staff that your recievers. Aren’t speedy enough for the type of deep routes they are running. This defense looks really lazy like the coaching looks lazy furthermore every thing looks slow about this team.

  22. Of course Says:

This coaching staff are completely lost.

Anyone who disagrees isn’t paying attention.

Offensive line and Defensive line penalties have been a problem since last season.

That’s on coaching. How about next time defense jumps offsides to give them a free first down you sit that player on the bench?

Oh you pansies won’t do that but ROJO gets sat down for nothing. Even after a great TD catch and run.

Oh you drop a pass ROJO? Sit down.

But D line players jump offsides 3 times in a row 2 for a first down
Oh it’s ok guys get em next time.

    F ing pathetic.

  23. Jeffrey M Says:

The bucs are a pathetic joke of a franchise.

  24. Godlovesbucs Says:

Fournette should backup jones only. The passing back should be someone else, either shady, jones, or the rookie. Fournette is the softest big man i have ever seen.

  25. JimmyJack Says:

#1bucsfan…….Theres certainly stuff to criticise about play calling.

But we are also getting lots of poor play from key players.

Perfect example is when Brady threw a third down pass to Brate in a tight window for a easy catch and a First Down……later we score TD……….Now rewind to the first quater. Third down same distance as before….Brate runs a good route at the sticks and gives Brady a little window and throws wild nowhere near Brates body. Incompkete we are punting. This is almost an identical playcall. Brady makes a bad theow and Brate cant make a great catch and the difference is 7 points.

Not every little thing is bad playcalling. Our QB and Recievers gotta make good plays for anything to work.

And this is just one example out of many.

  26. JimmyJack Says:

#1…..And maybe on the incompletion one of our lineman got pushed over into the throwing lane. Maybe maybe not I dont know. Point is a lot of these plays arent getting made and has nothing to do with playcalling……..Evans dropping that sideline route in Q1? Thats on Mike. We pay him to make that play.

  27. JimmyJack Says:

Oh and did yall see Marpets block on that pentalty? Thats just bad luck to get a flag. Dude blocked 2 men by himself. One man in his right hand one in his left!!! That play is the definition of beast.

  28. NPRSageBoy Says:

I’m not a big Tony Romo fan, but Mr. Brittney Spears did make a couple of good points; this offense sucks like a Hoover vacuum. After 20 years in one system, TB12 needs an offense he’s comfortable with, not this $hitshow that BA and Leftwich cobbled together.

  29. Nick Says:

Do you ever watch these other football teams with OC that have imagination to their game plan? You see people wide open. When was the last time you seen a Bucs receiver WIDE open?

Bruce Arians needs to either take over the game and play calling or step down. If he is not physically capable of doing this then he should retire.

They ran the ball 12 times in this game. TWELVE!

Ronald Jones had a 7.3 yard per carry average on his carries.

They had 3 and out their first 4 possessions! This guy is not only killing the offense but any idiot knows you can’t keep putting your defense in that portion with the KC offense.

BA will not talk about his coaches AT ALL. This is awful to see this team wasted because of a stubborn old man.

  30. D1 Says:

    NPR,

The idea that it’s not just Romo who is pointing this out makes worth considering.

  31. Pewter Power Says:

Becoming predictable? Really lol that would imply that leftwich learned something from last year and wasn’t doing the same things all over again this year. Offense stinks and there are no more automatic wins. Only thing that makes me feel better is if the losing continues the glazers have to be pissed thinking about the teams future after Brady so no need to bring this horrible coaching staff back. They don’t have Winston as an excuse this year

  32. SOEbuc Says:

This non use of RoJo makes me wanna puke. Don’t know why Bowels has to wait till half time to switch things up after we start off slow. Slow up on the blitzing cus its become easy for teams to read. I can’t think of one game Shaq hasn’t jumped on an important third and five.

  33. Craig Says:

It is not hard to look around the league and see so much that the Bucs could do. They could spread the field on the first play and chuck it, instead of running on first down, They could bunch receivers and throw a screen with that.

Instead they have a consistent “Go” plan. The receiver runs like hell and the QB tries to meet him.

Instead they run on first down, their their opponents safeties drift back, because second down is always near the first down marker, if that fails, they shoot at that long ball.

  34. T REX Says:

Someone…anyone…please take the golf cart keys away from grandpa.

What a waste of a season.

    Byron Turdwich is another waste.

    Awful. 7-5 and going nowhere.

Outcoached weekly. The Bucs own broadcast is saying it.

    Pathetic.

  35. Augsut 1976 Buc Says:

Why is winfield lining up so far back he takes himself out of the play,to where he cannot help either CB. Is Todd just coaching desperately because they do not have a pass rush? Guys lining up and giving so much cushion. JUST BRUTAL. GO BUCS!!!

  36. TjBoston17 Says:

    Hellooooo

  37. TjBoston17 Says:

So there is a pattern with Bruce Jamison 30 INT’S so now Tom is way above is 20 years average at this point!! It’s not the QB’S it’s simply Bruce is not a head coach! Like the formula for opponents- don’t run and just throw the ball cause this secondary sucks! Well let me rephrase that – the coaching starting with Bruce in which effects Bowles and Leftwich is horrendous it’s simple just take a look at the resume of the time he arrived in Tampa!

  38. Mirrormirroronthewall Says:

    BucsBro Says,

Brady cannot throw the deep ball. Stop fooling yourself.

  39. TjBoston17 Says:

Tom has made mistakes- yes!! But in fairness he has been the most successful QB in the NFL! WHETHER you want to admit it or not! But he needs to be utilized in the manner that has made him a winner and that’s not putting him in shotgun with no balance or creativity whatsoever! He is best with being under center with a RB – JONES IN BACKFIELD WHO BY THE WAY AVERAGED 7.8 YARDS TODAY AND TO HAVE SLOT RECEIVERS & SCREENS AND PLAY ACTION WHICH THEN OPENS UP THE OCCASIONAL DEEP PASS TO CATCH THEM SLIPPING! THIS IS HOW TOM HAS MADE IT TO 9!!! SUPERBOWLS!!LOOK AT BRUCES RESUME SINCE COMING TO TAMPA!? SAME OUTCOME WITH QBS NOW LOOK AT TOM’S RESUME WITH LESSER RECEIVERS & RB’S& TE’S! HE IS 43 & YET YOU STILL INSIST ON HAVING HIM THROW 40+ !?? ABSOLUTELY THE DEFENISION OF A HORRENDOUS HEAD COACH!!

  40. TjBoston17 Says:

REALITY IS THAT THE NFL HAS THE FORMULA TO BEAT BRUCES BUCS !! 1- DON’T RUN THE BALL CAUSE THATS THE DEFENSE’S STRENGTHS 2 – THROW THE QUICK PASSES CAUSE FOR SOME REASON ( BRUCE) THE CB ARE NOT BUMPING AT THE LINE TO ALLOW THE RUSH TIME TO GET A SACK- THEY JUST PLAY 10 YARDS OFF! WHICH BUCS HAVE BEEN GETTING TORCHED ON A REGULAR.!AND OUR OFFENSE SHOULD BE A BALANCED ATTACK WITH RB’S LIKE JONES- LEONARD – QUICK SLANTS WITH BROWN, MILLER- SCREENS & TE’S AND THEN THAT KEEPS DEFENSES GUESSING AND HONEST OPENS PLAY ACTION AND OPENS THE OCCASSIONAL DEEP BALL FOR TD’S & BIG GAINES

  41. Please Says:

2nd half, they rush a couple plays and all of a sudden touchdowns on a few plays. Why was this not the game plan from the first quarter? It’s like the play calling is completely removed from what works in the NFL.

All us yokels see it… so wtf is the deal?

  42. TjBoston17 Says:

JUST LOOK AT THE RESUME OF BRUCE’S QB’S SINCE HE HAS ARRIVED IN TAMPA! SERIOUSLY!! HATE EM OR RESPECT HIM LOOK AT TOM’S MUCH LONGER RESUME!? SUCCESS WITH NON HALL OF FAMER RECEIVERS, RB’S AND BESIDES GRONK AND A SMALL TIME WITH MOSS WHICH HE WAS MVP AND WENT UNDEFEATED IN 16 GAME SEASON ONLY TO LOSE SB AFTER HITTING MOSS FOR GO AHEAD TD WITH 1:36 SECONDS LEFT IN GAME- ONLY TO HAVE MANNING ON HIS OWN 25 YARD LINE WITH 4TH AND 18 TO COMPLETE THAT UNICORN CATCH BY TYREE WHEN DEFENSE HAD MANNING IN THEIR HANDS AN TYREE A ONE HANDED CATCH AGAINST HELMET GAME OVER! NOT TOM’S FAULT BUT THE POINT IS THAT COME ON MAN THE SAME PLAYERS CAM HAS ON OFFENSE BRADY WENT TO SUPERBOWL TO BEAT RAMS AND KC IN CHAMPIONCHIP GAME THEN FOLLOWJNG YEAR STILL HAVING A GOOD RECORD.

  43. TjBoston17 Says:

THE BUCS NEED TO CUT THE BS & LET A VERY UNDER QUALIFIED HEAD COACH GO- FIRED PERIOD!! IT’S A DAMN SHAME I CANNOT WATCH A GAME BECAUSE I KNOW THAT IM GOING TO GET SO PISSED CAUSE I KNOW AS DOES THE WHOLE NFL EXCEPT BRUCE- THAT HE CANNOT COACH A TEAM AND IS BASICALLY SUCKING THIS TEAM FOR FREE MONEY THAT IS SO UNDESERVED!! LIKE WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO START REALIZING THAT YOUR APPROACH & PHILOSOPHIES ARE NOT WORKING AND THE WHOLE LEAGUE IS AWARE EXCEPT YOU!? I MEAN WAKE UP!!I’M JUST SO EXHAUSTED THAT BRUCE IS SABOTAGING THIS SEASON.

  44. TjBoston17 Says:

THE ONLY POSITIVE I TAKE FROM THIS IS AFTER WATCHING TOM FOR 23 YEARS INCLUDING HIS MICHIGAN GAMES IS THAT I HONESTLY KNEW IT WOULD BE TOO MUCH OF A TALL ORDER FOR ANYONE TO COME TO A NEW ORGANIZATION WITH ZERO CAMP OR PRESEASON AND GO TO THE SUPERBOWL! I SAID THEY WOULD MAKE PLAYOFFS BUT THAT WOULD BE IT. I JUST KNOW THAT REGARDLESS OF WHETHER BRUCE IS STILL HERE OR NOT TOM WILL FLOURISH WITH A CAMP AND PRESEASON AND WORKING OUT OFF SEASON WITH HIS RECEIVERS AND HE WILL TAKE THIS AS A CHALLENGE AND I BELIEVE HE WILL BEGIN TO RUN HIS OWN PLAYS AND DO WHAT HE FEELS COMFORTABLE AT DOING REGARDLESS OFF BRUCE CAUSE BRUCE IS GOING TO KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT AND LET BRADY RUN WITH IT CAUSE HE IS GOING TO ACT AS IF THE SUCCESS IS HIS DOING! I KNOW IT SOUNDS CRAZY BUT U WATCH- HOPEFULLY BRUCE WONT BE HERE NO LONGER BUT WE’LL SEE. BUT PLEASE KNOW THAT THERE IS SO MUCH HERE TO BE SUCCESSFUL AS PLAYERS GO WE JUST HAVE TO STOP LETTING BRUCE SPOILOUR POTENTIAL

  45. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

Rojo is quite possibly the most talented RB in the entire NFL once the ball in his hands…

WE NEED TO BE LEANING ON ROJO. WTF.

    W. T. F.

  46. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

Rojo should get 1-2 carries per each set of downs. Period.

Everyone else needs to execute better as well, but use Rojo to open up everything else.

    DO IT!

B.A. & LEFTWICH, YOU GUYS NEED TO BE CALLED OUT FOR NOT GIVING ROJO AT LEAST 20 CARRIES PER GAME. WTF BRO’S🤦🤦🤦🤦

  47. 941Boltfan Says:

B.A. Has said allllllll year Rojo its his job to loose. But, I question what that job is because we sure as hell dont “running” back (not a knock on the players) All im saying is Gronk is clearly a “BLOCKING” TE. ??? I Don’t believe B.A & Co, don’t have run plays in their offensive scheme. What a waste of Talent ROJO has become to be.

  48. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Not using RoJo more as one thing that points to the stupidity of this coaching staff. Having your defense called soft by announcers points to another

  49. Defense Rules Says:

UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEAR Award …

“The Bucs offense is good but it has little rhythm and is a little predictable, especially early in games.” Joe

  50. SufferingSince76 Says:

Let’s pray someone is dumb enough to hire Leftwich as HC so we can get a real OC. I’m over Arians’ stubbornness, too. His lake house is calling.

  51. Court XXXVII Says:

Love the passion on “these here” boards. Boston, even with your all-caps, your critiques based on years of viewing Brady are poignant, thorough and insightful. (Always love me some Defense Rules takes, too.) Our coaches need to do some serious soul-searching. Their egomaniacal refusal to alter their ways is downright dumb-founding–and damn-right depressing.

Also, is it just me or does BA look like a suicide bomber on the sideline?

  52. Cobraboy Says:

BA needs to do an intervention on Leftwich’s game planning. He’s given the guy waaaay too much leeway.

  53. stpetebucsfan Says:

Oh well at least we had a winning record this year 2 games over .500 something rare for the Bucs.

Oh wait! You mean the season isn’t over yet and losing to the best team in the league and another playoff team means we’re doomed?

I still like our chances. Again…I was with Joe from the beginning. Ten games was the realistic goal. We’re not playing in the freaking AFC East. NO is one of the top 3 teams in the entire league.

So we need to win 3 of our last four. If we only win two and finish 9-7 I don’t think I can choke success out of those numbers. It will be at minimum highly disappointing.

If we only win one or none…as a Buc’s fan it will be deja vu all over again.

  54. TOM Says:

If the Vikings want to win just blitz Brady on just about every play. And by the way did I mention that Suckwich suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuks
