Did Bucs Forget To Scout Cheetah?

November 29th, 2020

“I see you Todd!”

There is no question that Cheetah Hill, the lightning fast receiver of the Chiefs, is one of the best in the game. He’s a big reason why the Chiefs won the Super Bowl last year.

Yet it seems this was all new to Bucs defensive coaches.

It was sort of a repeat stunt of the infamous “Tennessee Ready” game, where Bucs defensive mastermind Lovie Smith apparently watched no college tape of Marcus Mariota, and was completely blindsided by Tennessee running a spread-option offense against the Bucs to open the 2015 season. The offense the Titans used against the Bucs was the very same offense Mariota ran at Oregon in college.

The Bucs got destroyed that day. And they got destroyed in the first half today against the Chiefs.

Cheetah Hill went bonkers in the first quarter. After the Bucs held Kansas City to one field goal after two possessions (meanwhile, the Bucs had run eight offensive plays with one first down gained), the Chiefs blew the game open as wunderkind Chiefs quarterback Pat Mahomes constantly fed Cheetah.

How much? Cheetah had two touchdowns on catches of 75 and 44 yards as he ran up over 200 yards receiving. In the first quarter!

Honest to goodness, Joe had never, ever heard of that.

Did someone let Lovie back in the building? Was he disguised as defensive coordinator Todd Bowles? That is shameful!

It is preparation like that, or lack thereof, that tells Joe that maybe Bowles won’t be a candidate for a head coaching job in 2021.

The sad thing is, as often happens with Bowles’ defenses, they adjusted and held Cheetah to 66 yards in the final three quarters. Just a bit too late.

Allowing one of the best receivers in the game to get 200 yards receiving in the first quarter tells Joe either the Bucs didn’t scout him at all or that the defense they crafted to stop him was a total joke.

    This coaching staff is garbage.

  2. EA Says:

Single covered the fastest man in the game over and over to the point where Hill was mocking bucs fans, that’s a kick in the groin.
Please I don’t wanna hear Todd Bowles a great teacher anymore.

  3. Boltsfan17 Says:

I wish Bowles was a coaching candidate somewhere. It would mean he’d be gone which can’t come soon enough.

  4. Tbbucs3 Says:

“Secondary is fixed” is the new “Tennessee Ready”

  5. Wee Willie Winky Says:

    LOL….The Cheetah wasn’t spotted!

Take the bye week to fire everyone in the building and pray for the Wuhan virus to finish any stragglers.

  6. Buc4evr Says:

Bowles was out coached today as was Arians. By the time Bowles focused on Hill ,it was too little too late. Bucs coaches are slow learners and don’t play to the other teams weaknesses like Gruden did. Same old plays every single game….doesn’t matter who is on the other side. Makes me sick….

Trying to look at the positives:

The defense held them to only 10 points in the remaining 3 quarters.

But yea there’s just no excuse to continue to leave him single covered like that against a CB who isn’t as fast..

  9. unbelievable Says:

@Buc4evr – yup it’s the exact same game plan against everyone.

  10. T REX Says:

    Our staff is pure garbage.

Arians is worthless. Turdwich is a turd.

    7-5?

    GARBAGE!

    Sell the team.

  11. Miller5252 Says:

Another week saying the same thing…. the Bucs weren’t ready to go. What happened since the first few weeks where the Bucs were ready to go and looked great in the first quarter? Another week with the biggest coaching staff in the NFL and they lay an egg the first quarter. Sorry, some folks on the coaching staff need fired and Arians needs to put down the jack and coke and run the offense. If he’s willing to do whatever it takes for the team, which he said with the AB signing, then he needs to start calling the plays and building the game plan.

  12. Tbbucs3 Says:

Are we even going to sweep the Falcons? Wildcard is looking real shaken at this point.

  13. Davenport Says:

    Truth, Joe. Absolute truth.

The preparation by the coaching staff was horrific. Its time for BA to get on Bowles instead of Brady… who should be left alone to run his offense. Leftwich can get coffee and take notes.

  14. Pelsbuc61 Says:

All this BS about Bowles and Leftwich being head coach candidates and the Bucs going to the playoffs is comical and drug induced. Bucs have lost 3 of their last 4 games and some are not even close. So how do they right the ship? They bring in Antonio Brown! When they miss the playoffs, this should be Brady’s one and only year with the Bucs, fire ALL the coaches and Licht! Pathetic on so many levels.

  15. Roy T. Buford Says:

Today actually reminded me of the Schiano era as well as the Lovie era. What’s nice, is I’m really not disappointed by losses like this anymore.

Coaching is the some of the worst I’ve seen. In my life.

I am so sick of being outcoached. Can we please come with a competent game plan one game. Even hill is on the sideline talking to fans in the stands saying h KP is on the way. They are going to have safety help coming. I really feel like I can call a better game each and every week. It seems like are opponents have wide open receivers and we are throwing contested balls the whole game no one wide open. We have more Weapons than the chiefs and a better defense. But we have inferior coaching. I think we would be the only fans in nfl history to be happy if we fired our coaches in the middle of the season at 7-5. Who thought a 4.48 cornerback would be able to cover a 4.19 receiver who is even quicker than fast one on one. Great game plan Bowles. And Byron how about scheming some plays to get one of our 5 pro bowl targets wide open. I mean it shouldn’t be to hard to deviate from your Marshall carry me down the field game plan. I hate this coaching staff. We should never be outcoached this bad week in and week out. Two weeks and a row we have more three and outs than points why cupp and hill are over 100 and 200 in the first quarter. Enough is enough quit blaming Brady and call out yourself, Leftwich, and Bowles. Horrible game plan. But every game we give up the booty the first half and then hold them down the second half. How about coming up with a game plan that works from the first snap. I thought we had 4 easy games to finish the season. But with this coaching staff I don’t know. We will probably after the buy single cover Jones and Ridley. And Matt Ryan will tear us apart. And Stafford will have 250 at halftime. And cousins will have another you like that moment against us

  17. Ed Says:

Funny how the Bucs offense came alive when Tom Brady called the plays in the hurry up.

Lefty made big mistake calling Fournette’s number on first and goal

  18. JimmyJack Says:

I thought Winfield gotta help him on the 75 yarder. On the 3rd TD Davis had great coverage. Was an amazing throw.

Was anwful day for the young man. But Hill is the first reciever to get over on Davis……in 2 freaking years. I will forgive Davis for a really bad game and I dont see him getting burnt like that again. Im confident Davis bounces back.

  19. Tbbucs3 Says:

Antonio Brown 2 Catches for 11 Yards.

Don’t be surprised if the off field issues start to happen.

  20. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Giraffe > Goat

    Glennon > Brady”

    Kobe Faker

  21. Pewter Power Says:

Candidate for head coaching job you are still riding that train. The dinosaurs are being run out of this new league they just don’t fit. No idea what Byron leftover excuse is, he just flat out sucks

  22. unbelievable Says:

No we’re not gonna sweep the Falcons.

I’ve been trying to tell you guys that for weeks.

  23. ModHairKen Says:

    Cheetah is racist.

  24. View from 132 Says:

I’m still confused about the defensive game plan. KC is Hill and Kelse… not sure why taking those two away was not the priority. The rest of KC could not outscore our offense, at least once Brady ran no huddle without Left Sandwich.

Carlton will have better days, but unless he clocks a 4.2 or less, he had no business covering Hill on his own. Terrible coaching.

  25. stpetebucsfan Says:

    JeffBuc

Exactly. Davis is a good physical DB but expecting his to run with Hill was moronic.

Why didn’t we let the physical Davis line up each play in Cheetahs grill? He chucks him, hits him, and yes holds him when needed…sometimes getting away with it…sometimes getting 5 yards and a first down…a lot better than 50 yards and a TD.

We should have taken our best pass defending safety and lined him up behind Davis to spy on Hill EVERY PLAY.
