The Hit That Changed The Game

October 12th, 2020

Gamechanger.

It was an ugly hit, and nearly an incompletion.

But alas, the play was called a complete pass and a fumble. And who knew at the time that play was a gamechanger?

Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports, in looking back at the ugly Bucs loss to the Bears on the western shore of Lake Michigan, cited a play in the first half he believes was the turning point. That was when Bears cornerback Kyle Fuller blasted Bucs running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn, which jarred the ball loose for a fumble, killing what looked to be a Bucs scoring drive.

… a devastatingly textbook hit on Ke’Shawn Vaughn that forced the Buccaneers rookie receiver to fumble the ball just outside of the red zone. That gave Chicago the opportunity to score back-to-back touchdowns and erase a 13-0 Tampa Bay lead in what felt like the blink of an eye.

Sure, the Bucs had ample opportunities after that play to put the game away, and failed for a variety of reasons from p!ss poor blocking to dumbarse penalties to blown calls to a key player on offense forgetting how to count to four.

Yes, the Bucs still lead the NFL in penalties. They led the NFL in penalties last year.

Joe isn’t sure how you repair that in midseason without outright cutting starters. (This-Joe gives Carlton Davis a pass on his handsy ways because he often makes up for his penalty-a-game habit with strong play.)

Joe has yet to figure out how to fix stupid without getting rid of the culprits. And some of these penalties are just stupid; that’s all there is to it.

Even the former head of the officials thought that there was not a legitimate football move yet made by Vaughn thus it should have been an incompletion. Just one more bad play / call in a sea of them in a one point loss situation.

  2. Bucamania Says:

The ball was moving and it should’ve been ruled incomplete, but Bucs had PLENTY of chances to win that game easily but chose to be undisciplined on offense and play soft on D.

  3. Alanbucsfan Says:

Agree with AwShbucs , with a close 2nd being the penalties and sacks on the 2nd and 3rd possessions of 2nd half. And then Dean barely missed a pick 6….

  4. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Issue was on this play where Vaughn got hit by a truck. there was a roughing the passer on brady when one of the bears linebackers went for his knees.

That is textbook roughing the passer but it wasn’t called. Meanwhile that garbage call on Shaq at the end of the 4th quarter was why Vea isn’t playing til next year and why we lost.

  5. BillyBucFan Says:

Stupid and Selfish to be honest.
There should be a clause in their contracts that void it for dumb penalties.

    I’m sick of it.
You can ALWAYS tell when Jensen is about to get flagged.
    It NEVER fails.
D Smith just can’t put back to back games together.

  6. BucEmUp Says:

The penalty on Shaq is the play that changed the game. Clean hit textbook sack and gave the game away.Another penalty on Davis for PI that was complete b.s.This product sucks

  7. Bucfanforever Says:

Man, I wish this would have been a Sunday game. Reliving this game an extra 3 days is the worst.

  8. zzbuc Says:

agree 100% with you AwShbucs…..Also, the penalty over Jensen, and the offside on Barret was way wrong too….the Bears player made a false start….. was Hilarious!!!!!!
The bucs played bad, but the official’s were DISGUSTING

  9. thisisouryear!! Says:

Joe- I agree. I watched it over in the replay (before the challenge flag was thrown) and thought that was a fumble. It was an awesome hit by Fuller. I agree with the article. After they scored that touchdown, I remember feeling like how did we dominate the entire half and now we are behind. I think it was our only turnover of the game, but we definitely paid for it…

  10. Stanglassman Says:

The fact that it wasn’t a personal foul on the hit at the knees of Brady on that play was the real issue. Should have been a 15 yard personal foul instead of a turnover. This and the two calls (offsides and late hit on the Qb) on Shaq, that were ridiculous calls and the only thing that kept the bears in the game.

  11. SOEbuc Says:

If that Shaq hit was roughing Brady should be leading the league in roughing the passer penalties. Mentioned in a previous article that is a p#ssy ass penalty now. That is a penalty that needs to be reviewable if they expect 300 lbs guys to stop momentum on a dime a foot from the hit.

  12. Tampabuscsbro Says:

also on the touchdown after the flag. The bears TE pushed off on the DB during the catch. That isn’t supposed to be allowed. Look I have never put officiating as a contributing factor for a loss.

This loss the officiating was so one sided and seemingly biased I can’t write it off as anything other then a main reason we lost.

  13. chris L Says:

we werent going to score on that drive because that was third down and he would have been short of the sticks. what was even more disheartening is that vaughan wouldnt have even gotten the first down. i understand the checkdown but it shouldnt have happened and it would have been better had we just thrown it incomplete elsewhere beyond the sticks. so many forgettable plays on thursday that ironically, will never go unforgotten by buc fans until (hopefully) this game is rendered meaningless when the final nfc standings come out.

  14. Godlovesbucs Says:

Now hear me out, there were 3 questionable things in that play that all went against tampa.

1: ruled fumble. Very close call, not sure if there was enough to overturn it.

2: Targeting: rules of targeting state that if a player launches or leaves his feet. Fuller IMO was doing that, watch his feet at contact. I think its a bogus rule, but it fit the rule. They threw the flag, gotta call it. Especially with how they called it later on barrett.

3: Roughing the passer. Looked to me the defender hit brady in the thigh without being blocked into him. If so, thats a flag. To me, another bogus rule, but when you call it on barrett, you gotta call it there too.

That was a big swing in momentum. And it also set the tone on how the refs were going to lean on Chicago side all night. A good team should be able to overcome poor officiating, but they couldnt capitalize on the opportunities they had.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

The Bears should give the refs a reach-around for that game.

  16. Tampabuscsbro Says:

For the record I am not saying the refs were why we lost.

I am saying it was a main reason why. The awful calls against us put us in some bad spots.

  17. Tampabuscsbro Says:

    Honestly,

Just abolish thursday night football. It tends to be horrible games where players are more likely to get hurt.

  18. BucsFanForever Says:

The penalty that also harmed the Bucs was a stupid penalty: Ryan Jensen knocking his helmet on a Falcon for 15 yards.

  19. Pelbuc Says:

Let’s face it. This Bucs team is neither well coached nor dicliplined. It’s the same Bucs beating Bucs crap. Brady can’t be good if he doesn’t have time to throw and if Leftwich doesn’t have a good gameplan and doesn’t know how to adjust. Bowles defense looked like Mike Smith’s defense the last 2 games. Packers game gonna get ugly. BA is starting to look like just another coach that fleeched the Glazers.

  20. Darin Says:

Part that gets me is they blew it dead as an incompletion. Shouldn’t have been a fumble recovery allowed. Just like the RoJo catch and roll into end zone. They blew it dead hence no further advancement. Double standards with a side of BS

  21. Anonymous Says:

This is a bs looks like a catch in super slo mo kind of play. In real time the dude barely got two feet down, ball was still bobbling, and then gets blasted before he can make a football move. This AND the Shaq hit were not only huge plays but major momentum shifters too.

  22. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Tampabuscsbro … “Honestly, Just abolish thursday night football. It tends to be horrible games where players are more likely to get hurt.”

Ding ding ding … Therein lies the REAL solution. Nothing but a money grab by NFL ownership.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There is no question in my mind that the call against Shaq hurt the most……

At least with the Vaughn play, it got a review……on the Shaq play….no chance for review….awful call….at a terrible time.

  25. Mike C Says:

The call on Jensen was also a BLOWN call, IlThe definition of Tiky Tak

  26. Youngbucs Says:

Actually it wasn’t ruled a fumble it was ruled incomplete. They Changed it to a fumble smh.

  27. Rayjay1122 Says:

Unrelated ans not relevant to the outcome of any games but I really wish they would retire the white pants. All 3 jersey colors look good with pewter pants. If we have to wear white pants then use red jersey with them. The all while is not tough looking at all. IMHO.

  28. Ndog Says:

Ok let’s not talk about how our QB threw this pass that lead this receiver right into this massive hit, that caused the fumble, with little to no chance of actually getting a first down on 3rd and 10.

We were told our old QB did this often, yet there are not many examples, and that this new QB wouldn’t do this.

However this is now two weeks in a row where our current QB led a receiver into a death shot.

Hmm I thought that wasn’t going to happen???

  29. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Ndog go get other hobbies or a life.

  30. Mike C Says:

N dog, please comment with something other than QB propaganda.

  31. Ndog Says:

I get it that you have this blind love for Brady, cause you have been brainwashed to do so, but am I wrong, seriously? Was there any upside to that pass that both lead to a HUGE TO and a player to get rocked?

  32. Hodad Says:

There should’ve been a penalty for roughing the passer. One of their rushers hit Brady low. Another no call, what are you going to do. That games over.

  33. Mike C Says:

I don’t love Brady, just tired of being hit over the head with the 3 was awesome bat. Dude, think about something else!

  34. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Yeah yeah yeah Brady is bad, he is washed, old, hurts his players, only cares about himself, is a disgusting person.

meanwhile the league leader in turnovers that should have been kicked out of school and not allowed to be drafted who is a 3rd string QB and a future hall of famer should still be here according to you. We have heard it a million times.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

AwShbucs …I concur that call changed the field position for the Bears to be able to punt further down the field essentially ending the game for the Bucs.

Right after that call I knew the Bucs lost the game.

  36. BigMacAttack Says:

Worst one sided officiating I’ve ever seen. This game was decided before the Bucs took the field. Talk about cheating betting on the game refs. The wrong offsides penalty call on Shaq changed the game. In the first half, how was that not a defenseless receiver? The late hits on Brady were worse than the one hit on Foles. I 100% don’t blame the Bucs. This game was taken away from them by the officials and the NFL for allowing it. The repeated holding calls, yet the Bears held plenty that wasn’t called. There comes a point where no matter what you do, you’re not going to win. They are going to make sure of it. Welcome to Tampa, Tom. This is the norm for us.

  37. Bird Says:

    Ndog

    Yes. Yes

He is back. Keep it coming ndog. I am dying
Acting like jameis didnt get receivers killed every game. 😂

He is talking about blind love for the greatest qb of all time
When he had blind “man on man “ love for a guy that won 4 out of 10 games

He called someone a hypocrite the other day
    I about died

Again. Ndog. Please dont stop. I am keeping these comments for the history books/ archives.
I think when ndog watches a bucs game his eyes are crossed

Again …before brady …nothing was jameis fault Even when turning the ball over 5 times in a game.
With brady …everything is brady fault. Defense is now good. Oline good. Running game good. 😂

    😂

Man. He cant stop Thinking about those nuts

Like bubba from forrest gump. But its not shrimp. Its how he would prepare his favorite nuts – Chin nuts / salty nuts / chestnuts/ raw nuts.

  38. Bucy Says:

    Boom 💥 tuff actin tenactin

  39. Buc1987 Says:

    Bird lmao

  40. Godlovesbucs Says:

Ndog- please tell me you dont only talk about jameis vs brady in your life too.

I could just see him at work

BOSS: ” Mr. Ndog, have you finished the expense reports?”

Ndog: “I thought that it was always jameis’ fault that the expense reports didnt get done, but now that the bucs have Brady you are saying these things still happen? Coincidence?? I think not!!!”

  41. JimmyJack Says:

    Bird STFU you nasty bastard

  42. Ndog Says:

    That is actually funny ⬆️.

    Good one sir.

  43. Oneilbucs Says:

BIRD THAT WAS A GOOD ONE EVEN THOUGH WE DISAGREE ON A LOT OF STUFF LOL LOL !!! BUT THAT WAS A GOOD ONE LOL LOL 😅🤣😂😂😂😂..

  44. Stanglassman Says:

I’m glad others saw the interior holding on Vita and Suh not being called too. The refs sure saw anything that resembled holding on the Bucs. I wasn’t even going to mention those cause all the other blatant calls against us. It is cathartic to know other fans saw the same thing. What a frustrating game. I was hoping with Brady on the team we’d get better officiating.

  45. BucEmUp Says:

As bad as the bucs played, they atill win that game with fair officiating. They need to hire some of the nhl officals to come and take over in the nfl.

  46. Ftmyersbuc Says:

Of all the times he throws low to protect his guys this was one he should have thrown lower.

  47. Ndog Says:

    ⬆️
Our with a QB that actually knew what down it was.

  48. BigMacAttack Says:

Every single official from that game should have been given a lie detector test after it was over. I guarantee it was fixed, they did it purposely and they would all be in jail for taking a payoff or betting on the game. It was to obvious to be incompetence or something innocent.

  49. Wesley Says:

Dude never had total control of the ball. Horrendous officiating.

  50. Bird Says:

    Jimmy jack

    Whats your problem. Seriously.
Whats wrong little buddy. Telling me to do what ?
    😂

  51. Jerry S Bentham Says:

What killed us is the penalty that was called on Shaq when the offensive moved first that was when they went down and scored their first TD

  52. Dlavid Says:

Great hit on Vaughn , it was a catch and fumble but the bear player who made the recovery then fumbled the ball and Tampa recovered the ball ! This has not been mentioned at all . I believe Whifs made the recovery . Another BS the turn of events .

  53. adam from ny Says:

a rusher went after brady’s knees on one play…no call

  54. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

What Steven007 said. 2 steps+ a football move constitutes a completed pass. Those zebras went out of their way to hose us with some very bogus calls.

  55. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Yeah BucsFanforever Jensen headbutting that Falcon player really destroyed our chance at winning, since that Falcon player was about a 1000 miles away in another state playing the stankin Panthers! Crazy thing, he must have a transporter that allowed him to do that and be back before the huddle or maybe he has super powers like the Flash, but they just don’t work on the football field!

    I’m just playing man

  56. Jack Says:

The hit on Vaughn was deinitely a game changer. I sensed it right then and afterwards.
