Historic Bucs Defensive Performance

October 18th, 2020

Bucs S Antoine Winfield.

There is no question Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks to play in the NFL.

Joe will even go so far as to say no one has been able to burn defenders with a back-shoulder face pass as well as Rodgers had done over the years. There is no doubt he will be in the Hall of Fame some day.

When Rodgers sliced up the Bucs’ defense like butter for an early 10-0 lead, Joe doubts there was one Bucs fan who thought the Packers wouldn’t score another point.

Per BSPN, a Rodgers-led Packers team had never given up 38 unanswered points. Never. Until today against the Bucs.

When the Bucs picked off Rodgers twice in consecutive Green Bay possessions in the first half, that is only the second time in his career that Rodgers threw picks on back-to-back possessions.

Rob Demovsky of ESPN had these nuggets on the Bucs’ pass rush.

The Bucs’ swarming defense pressured Rodgers 12 times, the most anyone has gotten to Rodgers this season. Rodgers went just 2-of-7 for 10 yards with four sacks and a scramble when pressured. Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles blitzed Rodgers 17 times, and he went 5-of-14 with two sacks and both of his interceptions. It was tied for the most blitzes, he’s faced over the past two seasons, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

How dominant was the defense late? Per T.J. Rives of the Buccaneers Radio Network, in the last 41 Packers snaps, the Bucs allowed a total of 54 yards.

That, friends, is damn impressive.

Oh, ok. Only less than 2 yards per play.

Straight dominant on defense to close it out.

  2. Bird Says:

That Winfield hit on 260 lb back was savage

For undersized guy he is a baller
    We need him healthy

Now if Lavonte David doesn’t make the Pro Bowl, it is criminal.

  7. AJ Says:

Aaron no likey getting his ass planted in the ground. He was back footing it early with the pressure coming at him. Great game today by Todd Bowles, he really had Rogers confused and that’s hard to do!

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Devin White showed up, too, even though he still struggles in pass coverage.

This is Joe’s take from a previous article…

    10 tackles (9 solo) 3 TFL…..1 Sack & I can’t count how many hits on Rodgers….

  9. Ftmyersbuc Says:

Good to have a legit, top notch Defense back in Tampa. It’s like welcoming an old friend when he returns home.

  12. Jay Adams Says:

Even the Elite QBs can choke when pressured. Now the Pack has been exposed just like other years past.

  13. FirstTimePoster Says:

Lost to Chicago, on the road, on a short week, without Godwin against a really good D and lost by one. I was “ok” with that, penalties aside. I NEVER expected this game today though. Good for them.

  14. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    Unbelievable game.

  15. SlyPirate Says:

This seemed like a major breakthrough game. Let’s see if it carries over to Vegas.

  16. SlyPirate Says:

David and White were everywhere today. Suh and JPP were killing the OL. Not enough game balls to give out today. Boys came to play.

  17. Wesley Says:

The best this defense has looked since the glory years.

  18. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

We just traded for a Nose Tackle with the Jets!

  19. DBS Says:

I was hoping Winfield could hold on. I know he would love to get that int from Rodgers.

  20. WillieG Says:

I hope the Glazers do for Bowles what they did for Kiffin. Sign him to a huge contract to stay as DC. Make him the highest paid assistant in the NFL.

  21. O'Neilbuc Says:

We need to sign Bowles as the head coach next year and keep BL as the OC !!!

  22. Conte Piscateli Says:

This game changed on one play, because Dean finally held on to the ball. Kid should have 3 picks by now. Should have sealed the Bears game with one. I don’t believe Rogers threw his way the rest of the game. All the talk is about Davis, but Dean will likely be the true shut down corner soon.

  23. jimm Says:

how about a defense with 2 shutdown corners !
