Jason Licht Talks Ronald Jones

October 18th, 2020

Bucs GM Jason Licht

The man who drafted Ronald Jones at No. 38 overall in 2018 is also the man who absorbed all kinds of darts from Joe and many Bucs fans for RoJo’s prolonged ugly start to his NFL career.

He’s Bucs general manager Jason Licht, a man now overflowing with pride when it comes to his starting running back.

RoJo is a radically changed player. He punished his way to 113 yards on 23 carries today and two rushing touchdowns. It represented the first time a Buccaneers running back has had three consecutive 100-plus yard rushing games since Doug Martin in 2015, a season in which Martin was a Pro Bowler.

Through six games, RoJo has a whopping 472 yards rushing via 4.9 yards per carry. He’s on pace for 1,258 yards this season!

Before yesterday’s game, Licht talked about 23-year-old RoJo on the Buccaneers Radio Network. Licht was adamant that the rise of RoJo has two key components.

“I think it’s two things. I think it’s confidence, and I think it’s decisiveness,” Licht said with authority.

Whatever it is, Joe is all for it.

And kudos to Licht and Bucco Bruce Arians for doing the right thing this offseason, signing LeSean McCoy and Leonard Fournette, and drafting Ke’Shawn Vaughn in the third round. Those were wise moves, and Vaughn looks like he’s got some juice in his legs. Maybe that lit a fire under RoJo.

If RoJo keeps this up, Joe will volunteer to let Licht throw a Thanksgiving pie in Joe’s face.

  7. jcscycles Says:

Just saw on PFT that we traded today for Steve Mclendon, the Jets starting nose tackle, and one of the Jets captains. We gave up draft pick(s). He is a good guy, team leader, and a definite space eater. Jets fans are sorry to see him go. Should only make an already good defense even better. Keep up the good work, Mr. Licht!

  8. gp Says:

Next up the raiders… Didn’t Dougie run off 200 plus against the raiders that year?
Shore would be cool to have Rojo do the same next week!

Rojo runs very, very hard……some holes are starting to open & he doesn’t have to share carries with Barber…..or anyone else for that matter.

Is it still the “Den of Depression”?

  14. JimmyJack Says:

I was really most impressed with RoJo running the ball in the first half.

Their run D looked pretty decent and Ronald was churning out tough yards. Loved seeing him break off those big ones. Well earned and a great running game and great job taking care of the football.

  15. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Hilarious pie comment. That was a good one!

  16. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

Hiring Arians Licht released the lost decade. The Arians hire will bring us many playoff games in our next Dynasty Decade.

    And yes I’m sober.

    Go Bucs!!!

  17. Player 1 Says:

I love that Rojo has turned the corner. Dude has shown he’s the real deal. Just wish he would stop running into the back of the line so often.

We need a minimum of 5 home wins this season to retire that name

I’ve been really tough on Licht…he now loses the “LichtWeight” moniker. The fella has hung in there and could be in the running for NFL Exec of the Year.

  20. bill Says:

rojo came into the league as a 200 pound 20 year old…..he should be a senoir in college this year. he had to learn to run inside.

    BL IS WORKING MAGIC

    GO BUCS

  22. El Buco Realisto Says:

But, One would have to agree, that his “turnaround” has been quite astounding!!!!!!!!!! Some might say that no one has shown more “heart” since Lance Armstrong!!!!!!!!!! That his field vision is as sharp as Barry Bonds looking for a fast ball!!!!!!!! That his speed on the field is comparable to Ben Johnson in the 1988 Olympics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. TomTom Says:

Jamoist would have pick sixed this game away. What a difference a year makes.

  24. Dapostman Says:

If Wirfs and Gronk were blocking last year RoJo would have had a 1000 yard season then.

  25. Dapostman Says:

Bird Brain can’t get Ndog out of his head.

This is what happens when you drink yourself into old age kids.

    Don’t be a Bird Brain.

  26. Joeypoppems Says:

Its kinda funny Joe(s), I was the Rojo guy before the season. I was against the Fournette signing because I didnt believe Fournette was an upgrade over Rojo while you thought Fournette should take over.

Now here we are week 6 and you are praising Rojo and my biggest takeaway from that game on offense was the Bucs need Fournette back bad lmao.

Not for Rojo, but for less McCoy and Vaughn. McCoy is toast imo and Vaughn has 3 drops and a fumble already in limited opportunities. They need Fournette back in a big way. Hooefully he is healthy.

Funny how the tables turned lol. Happy that Rojo is playing well and happy the team got the big W most of all!

  27. adam from ny Says:

ole lichtie gets rid of the smelly stank azz ron burgundy coat and is thus transformed into “super gm”…

we now have the nfl executive of the year right here…

unless he secretly stashed the crazy sports coat in a trash bag in his garage 🙂

  28. Bird Says:

    Dapostman

    I Stress the DUH

Nah. I just like making fun of his and your obsession. I forgot about you so let me Give a shout out.

You go into hiding now when bucs win. Thats why i havent see yah
And bird brain. Wow. Good burn. 😂

When bucs lose / brady struggles you come out and share how jameis would have done better Give some lamo stat about yards.
    Remember this instant classic?

“Jameis is playing chess when everyone else is playing checkers”

I mean how great is that. That didnt age well. And its not a chessboard. Its a clip board
    Dude. You Look horrible
    😂

    Go back into hiding
And go noles! Oops thats a sore spot too

  29. Bill M Says:

Vaughn showed flashes of good potential. A rooky with no preseason. More speed and power than McCoy who looks way too slow. Fournette had that one big touchdown run.. Need to see more game time to know what he c a n do for us. I would like to see more Vaughn and less McCoy.

  30. Soggy Says:

Way to man up Joe.. Hat tip..

  31. Cobraboy Says:

Not at all impressed with McCoy.

  32. Noles Says:

I agree w Licht & that Decisiveness is what has been allowing him to finish runs w power. That is something that prior to this yr we have never seen. His weight room work over last 2 years combined w his wiggle and speed he looks good.

If he could catch & block more consistently we could have more deception in our play calling

  33. O'Neilbuc Says:

I’ve all ways said that I don’t know how good RO JO was because we never ran him enough if any times in a game . But he looks good in the back field . This is the type of team I’ve always wanted . This is the real indenty of the bucs run the ball and play good defenses with a game manager at quarterback. After Brady leaves we need to keep this type of team we don’t need a hall of fame quarterback to win . Dink and dunk and run the ball with a good defense we will win a championship !!!
