About The Secondary

October 4th, 2020

Sean Murphy-Bunting

No, Joe is not here to urinate upon a glorious and historic Buccaneers victory.

However, lots of improvement is needed if the Bucs are to be a dominant force in January.

Rookie QB Justin Herbert burned the Bucs for two 50-plus-yard touchdown passes today. That can’t happen. And all three Herbert TDs went to undrafted young pass catchers.

On the first TD throw, Herbert threw 63 yards in the air with a guy in his face for a 72-yard bomb to Tyron Johnson that went far past safeties Jordan Whitehead and Antoine Winfield, Jr. The second TD, a 19-yarder, saw Sean Murphy-Bunting get beaten by Donald Parham, Jr. for his first career catch. And then Murphy-Bunting let Jalen Guyton get behind him for a 72-yard TD, which more than doubled his career receiving yards.

Carlton Davis came up with a game-sealing interception when Herbert got sloppy, but Davis also had his struggles and found his fifth penalty of the season. (He entered the game tied for the NFL lead in penalties).

It’s a crazy young Bucs secondary and none of this surprised Joe, but again, it must improve before the Bucs try to slow down the Packers in two weeks and other potent offenses coming their way.

Weenie arm has terrorized the seven kingdoms so much, the thought of a pass going aloft made them soil their pantaloin.

  2. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

If anything we have time to adjust.

Is good when we win these games unlike last year with America’s Backup Quarterback.

    Go Bucs and Rays!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Hodad Says:

Secondary, thanks Davis, sealed the game with an interception.

You know, I’m about ready to call Brady, after this five touch down day, Mr. Excitement. Or is he Americas QB?

  6. Buc N A Says:

Jack Sparrow errr Murphy-Bunting better get his act together…… Quick!

  7. tampabaybucfan Says:

We had good coverage on several throws that were perfect with great catches……give the Chargers some credit…
We also didn’t get to Herbert very well…….yes, we put some pressure but he got the passes off.

  8. Coburn Says:

Winfield looked mortal today.was bound to happen eventually

  9. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Carlton had a great game I don’t know what you’re talking about!!! …. The rest of the D just played a young QB that let it fly and did an excellent job…. They only allowed one TD in the second half and if it wasn’t for them the come back would never have been possible!! They tightened up in the second half a lot!! Came out really flat tho!! …. Devin white is an absolute liability in coverage man!! Not sure what he’s thinking sometimes!! I think he will be a top 5 but he’s got to stop thinking he’s the best to ever play because he’s not yet!! That over confidence gets him beat in the passing game!!… But all in all a lot of good things to look at in this game!! The chargers have done this to every team!! They throw for a lot of yards!! The TDs they got won’t happen all year!! This isn’t that defense anymore!!…. I am surprised they didn’t blitz more!! That is what this defense is made from!! They thought with the rookie and beat up line they could rush 4 and get there… And much to my dismay,.. They could not!!!! They started blitzing in the second half and tightened up

  10. Lamarcus Says:

Winfield looks like he has no wheels

  11. August 1976 Buc Says:

What happened to the press coverage by the corners? They are lining up like they did in Mike Smiths Defense. Not fun to see the corners lining up so far back. Setting up far enough back to conceed a first down simply because of alignment. GO BUCS!!

Justin Herbert is going to have a great NFL. career

    Lamarcus

Any chance you can sit this out?

You are …after all… Mr “brady is garbage”
I mean jameis loses this same game last year after a pick six
He lost so many close games.

    Same crappy defense
    Same missed kick

But this time …brady for the win.

    You look terrible again

  14. adam from ny Says:

smb got knocked around out there today…

by the son of bobby hebert…

well dude played pretty darn well today, so i will now refer to him as j herb

  15. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

We found Winfield’s weakness: closing speed.

  16. Bird Says:

    Lamarcus

And you are dogging winfield now. That guy had a bad game.
He is a rookie Kid has made plays in key games

Mr “he is garbage” strikes again

I mean you thought jameis was a HOF

Again, maybe you should sit these out.
You are absolutely clueless when it comes to football
    😂

Did you eat paint chips as a kid?

  17. Fernando Says:

    Agree with Altered ego
Blitz burned us twice it’s ok

  19. BuccoDav Says:

It seemed to me that the secondary did not believe the rookie could beat them. It’s hard to believe that they can hold Brees to what, 160 yards? and then give up so many yards to a rookie? I think it’s mental.

  20. Nutterbuccer Says:

Gotta remember bunting was hurt all week and probably wasn’t playing at 100%. He’s been very good in coverage up until today and all tds were excellent throws by Herbert especially the one that was caught by Parham, Bunting was right there the WR just made a great play

  21. JustMyMobileOpinions Says:

We haven’t seen the come from behind win from this team yet. AWESOME!!!

  22. Brandon Says:

Adam…. they don’t even have the same last name. STFU

  23. Cobraboy Says:

Justin Herbert is the real deal.

  24. unbelievable Says:

Davis played good enough overall. And I’m loving his new found swagger.

SMB has a rough day though. Might need a little Jamal Dean out there.

  25. bojim Says:

They almost lost us the game but I believe Tod Bowles will tighten it up.

  26. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

It’s hard to argue…the secondary did not have a good game.

  27. Jay Adams Says:

Yes, these young Secondary guys all need to step up like Winfield has. Bunting-Murphy and Dean have both been Burnt toast this season.

But glad that the REAL America’s Quarterback is now on our team and shows how you do a BIG Comeback! America’s clipboard holder just couldn’t do that.

  28. David Says:

That’s OK. They let the headlines get in their heads a little but they got out with the win.
They are extremely young they will learn and they will get better. The first half barely saw a pass rush also. The second half they gave up a total of seven points. The pressure was better, the coverage was better.

Two of those deep plays were really uncalled for. The safeties can’t let that happen

  29. My Momma Says:

Joe, don’t you think SMB was slowed a bit from the hammy still?

  30. Defense Rules Says:

@August 1976 Buc … “Not fun to see the corners lining up so far back.”

I was thinking exactly the same thing today. Not at all sure what the defensive game plan was, but I wasn’t impressed. Hebert was exceptional IMO at dealing with the Bucs’ DLine pressure (well, what pressure there was). Seemed like our LBs & Secondary were conceding a whole bunch, and to make matters worse they didn’t seem to be playing ‘fast & furious’ like they did in the last couple of games. Even our daunting run defense looked quite mortal.

Hopefully this’ll serve as a good lesson going forward. Don’t believe all the hype.

  31. 813bucboi Says:

Bowles should’ve heated the rookie up early….kid got in a rhythm and got hot….

    We’ll learn from this a get better….

    Ugly wins build character

    GO BUCS

  32. Jmarkbuc Says:

    DR

Maybe the track had something to do with it?

Lot of points.. neither defense looked great. Not trying to make excuses, but sloppy fields suck. Wish USF would get their own field.

  33. Architek Says:

Secondary played great imo – can’t ask them for much more when you’re jail house blitzing. Proud of the youngsters!

  34. Buczilla Says:

Herbert is no joke and was considered a possible number one overall pick at one point in his college career. Not a great day for the defense but we won. If we play like this against Aaron Rogers we are going to get seal clubbed.

  35. August 1976 Buc Says:

Agree with you on all your points Defense Rules. BTW other than the fumble recovery even D White invisible today. I think also Jmarkbuc you make valid points. For some reason Todd B has been playng the corners soft much more this year. I have never liked to conceed a first down just because of positioning. I can see this some if you have a field like today but this soft Defensive positioning of the corners has been way to frequent this year in the games played so far. Anyway they are definately miles ahead of where they have been defensively for the last several years. GO BUCS!!!!

  36. Mord Says:

Justin Herbert made some really good plays despite good coverage.

SMB may be a few percent slow still recovering from injury

Carlton Davis sealed the game, showing maturity to not lose his head wanting to argue a previous PI call.

    Etc.

None of this is worth generalizing negatively about the secondary. It’s gonna be okay.

  37. adam from ny Says:

    we gave up a little over 300 yards total offense…324 i think…

    it’s ok…

take away the big bombs and they didn’t have much at all…

limit the big bombs moving forward and get the secondary back on track before rodgers comes to town…

    #RodgerIsComingToTownButHesNotGoingToTown

  38. orlbucfan Says:

The Chargers have a well deserved rep for drafting talented QBs and building potent offenses. BA knows this better than a mere fan does. I don’t care if half their team is on IR. Not sure why Bowles didn’t play more aggressive defense in this first half. This win was a very good lesson for the youngsters in the secondary. Their inexperience nearly cost the Bucs the game. Thank the football gods/dawgs for LVD. He proved yet again why he is one of the finest LBs in the league, and deserves to be in the playoffs and the HOF!

  39. Macko Says:

Our secondary as always been our weakness! Young corners and safties! Need to add a veteran or two. Next free agency we’ve got to go after a good veteran safety and cornerback. Teams are putting up more passing yards than ever right now, tough time for our young secondary to be learning the game on the fly! GO BUCS!

  40. Mrs. Entertainment Says:

The performance of our secondary on Sunday has me worried. Cockiness counts for very little in the end.
