High Point For Will Gholston

September 17th, 2020

Will Gholston had a special day

In Game 104 of his career, perhaps Will Gholston was peaking, launching a special season at 29 years old.

That would be quite a bonus for the Bucs’ defensive line.

Gholston had five tackles for loss through a 16-game 2019 season that saw him make eight starts. Against the Saints on Sunday, Gholston had two tackles for loss and was extremely active and was a key to the Bucs’ suffocating run defense.

Bucco Bruce Arians lauded Gholston on Bucs Total Access early this week, so Joe asked the head coach about Gholston yesterday.

JoeBucsFan.com: Coach, following the Saints game, you said Will Gholston had one of his best games ever, can you talk more about what you saw from him?”

Bruce Arians: Yeah, he was up and down the line of scrimmage, tackles for loss, penetrating, played well against the run, had a couple of good pushes, big, big play down in the red zone for a tackle for loss. And he had a great camp; he stood out in camp.

Gholston recently warned the NFL about his beefed up body and all the work he put in this year. Against the Saints, he looked better than Ndamukong Suh and Vita Vea.

Regardless, a special season for Gholston would be a welcome and valuable surprise. He’s off to a great start.

Great news with Easy Ed’s son coming to the Bay this Sunday.

  2. 407Buc Says:

He and Vea were very explosive off the ball. Just need Barrett to get going again.

Agree, a very unexpected surprise! I’m happy that he has finally blossomed in Bowles defense.

    Awesome!

  5. Casual Observer Says:

I always thought he was the weak spot in that front seven. Glad to know this was wrong. He’s on a mission apparently. Great to hear.

  6. Easy Says:

Gholston thrives in the Bowles scheme as was evident in being a major key in that number 1 run defense from last year. He’s only going to get better

  7. Youngbucs Says:

Don’t disrespect will he’s always done his job stats don’t tell the story! How do you think he’s surviving in the nfl he’s a good player.

    Joes,

Thought you might be interested in this pretty awesome tidbit about our rising star corner Carlton Davis:

Is Davis emerging into the league’s next great corner? It’s not a wild thought considering how the 23-year-old has performed against top wideouts since returning from injury in Week 11 last season. Check out his numbers against the opposing team’s top wideout since that point, with shadow situations noted with an asterisk:

Pretty impressive, eh? Davis is fresh off holding Michael Thomas to a 2-9-0 receiving line in Week 1 and figures to travel with Carolina No. 1 WR Moore (70% perimeter in Week 1) this week. Moore had two good games against Tampa Bay last season, but most of his damage came against the aforementioned Hargreaves, who was later waived. Moore ran 25 routes against Davis in those outings and managed three catches for 25 yards on seven targets. Moore should be downgraded, whereas Robby Anderson could be in for another strong performance against Jamel Dean, who struggled in Week 1.

    Nice breakdown!

Back to Gholston, I remember him picking Suh for trade tips when we signed him last year. Has the student become the master?

  10. JimmyJack Says:

Greg G Thanks for putting that out there. Carlton is entering shutdown corner territory.

Waiting and still no articles about the secondary. I dont think Joe is impressed. He mentioned penalties on his podcast. That’s fair and they do gotta clean those up. Especially Carlton whose always had penalty issues.

Another way you could look at it is total work vs top QBs……Off the top of my head from last year our secondary played well against Watson and Ryan twice down the stretch. Then Bress this year. But we only won one of those games so it’s tough to get too enamored about it. Once the wins start to come it’ll be easier to see that we really might got something with this young group.

  11. JimmyJack Says:

Easy right on!! Gholston has really come alive in this system. I love his energy. Taco too to be honest.

  13. orlbucfan Says:

Defense will only get better with Bowles coaching and these elite players responding. Wish Bucs “brain” trust didn’t sign relics to the offense in the off-season. 🙁

  14. D-Rome Says:

Yeah, I noticed Gholston all over the field on Sunday and I mean that in a good way.
