Carlton Davis Is On A Roll

September 19th, 2020

Strong run.

It seems Bucs corner Carlton Davis will get sort of a break tomorrow. He won’t have to worry about an elite receiver.

It seems Davis may be guarding D.J. Moore of the Stinking Panthers. Moore is a nice receiver. He’s not elite.

In his last four games, Davis has faced arguably the three best receivers not named “Mike Evans.” Including the final three games of 2019, Davis has squared up on Julio Jones twice, DeAndre Hopkins and last week, Michael Thomas.

And the way Davis has held those guys, if he keeps this up he’s very much in the discussion for a Pro Bowl bid in Joe’s eyes.

Per the PFF tribe, in the past four games the guys Davis has covered totaled 20 catches on 186 yards. Given who he has guarded (see above) that is outstanding. Davis’ target has not scored a touchdown in the last four games, either.

So Joe’s going to keep an eye out for Davis. We could be seeing the very beginnings of a shutdown corner.

    Amen to that!

Bucs D across the board is underrated for now….which should change after Panther game.

  3. JimbobBucsFan Says:

    Amen! Amen!

He has emerged out of the fog of a sunrise. A year and a half ago I heard no predictions from anyone that said that this would happen.

  4. Hawaiian Buc Says:

He’s playing great. But he will have a hard time making a Pro Bowl if he doesn’t get at least a couple INT’s. That’s really the only thing you can say negative about him lately.

  5. Brad Says:

Joe, correct me if I’m wrong, but it was Davis who had the face mask missed tackle TD on Sanders last week?
He’s played really well overall though.

  6. Joe Says:

    Brad:

Do know he got called for being a bit too handsy along the left sideline.

  7. Brad Says:

I can live with that play. You can’t stop someone as physical as Thomas without being aggressive. He was def on Thomas that play. He was a little early.

I just looked. He was on Sanders on the TD. He followed him across the formation, got through all the bodies and missed the tackle. I guess they don’t consider that caught on him because Sanders caught it in space? Anyways the result was a TD and a 15 penalty that allowed for that kickoff play, or lack there of, by Mike Edwards on the kick.

The Bucs defense overall had a very promising start. Until that last drive when the game was over, and the Saints were trying to run up the score, they really played well.

Also, something that hasn’t been talked about, but what about in the last 15 games that the Bucs defense stopped McCaffrey & Kamara on 4th down, at the goal line, to basically end the game. That is something. I wonder if any team has ever done that, had stops inside the 1 on 4th down to end a game, twice in less than a season of games.

and we drafted MJ “stumpy legged” Stewart before this guy!

  10. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

Ok, I’ll just put it out there…we have the beginnings of an ELITE trio of corners with C. Davis, SMB and J. Dean for years too come. All young, all athletic and all starting to get it.

@ Hawaiian Buc – ever hear of Ewa Beach? My home for 10 years.

I don’t hold the PI call against CD on the long pass play to Michal Thomas because that was good coverage that could’ve gone either way but favored the Saints. If they didn’t call PI on the pass play to Godwin when saints defender aggressively grabbed his arm before the ball reached him, then honestly they shouldn’t have called PI against CD on the play to Michael Thomas. CD wanted his number changed from 33 to 24 for a reason he’s making a statement. He will represent the number as the next Revis Island, a young shut down corner.

    WOW!!!!!

That is really great. Hope he keeps it up and does not look at this week as a week to relax which I doubt he will.

Hopefully he can be the cornerstone and the leader of the secondary for years to come. Need a great player at every level of the defense.

Not only has Carton Davis improved since midseason last year, but his attention to detail in limiting his penalties gets a two thumbs up! Lattimore gets away with far more and should be penalized far more in more IMO. Make it a 10 or15 yard penalty for holding a receiver such as grabbing arms and players won’tdo it if stiffer pernalties are enforced whether receiver is the intended target or not.

  14. Va buc Says:

O nowwww he might be a shutdown corner at first you was screaming he’s an liability to young. Look at him now

  15. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Is it just me or did Dean have a bad game last week?

  16. Steven Says:

Does anyone remember hearing this on 620 after being drafted? After I heard his interview I felt like I could run through a wall.

  17. Jmarkbuc Says:

Glad he’s playing better… will still get you a PI when you least need it… Let’s hope Joe didn’t just put the kiss of death on him re: DJ Moore. Bucs have a long history of making people look good ( see: Donovan Smith, and the backup he was going against last week)

Don’t get me wrong I want all our guys to be great, but all this chest beating for a couple good game’s isn’t what pros are made of.

    I hope he’s awesome against the kitty’s…. let’s see.

  18. SOEbuc Says:

Smells like a up and coming Bowels secondary. Give Weinfield Jr some time on the big boy field and he could be elite, also.

  19. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Jaymiss Pick6 Again,

I lived in Ewa Beach for years! Still have our house in Haleakea.
