About The D-Line/Edge Rusher Snaps

September 21st, 2020

Light load

The Buccaneers’ Sunday snap counts are in and they are thought-provoking.

Jason Pierre-Paul had his workload cut down to 89 percent of the defensive snaps after nearly going the distance against New Orleans. Please, Bucs, more of that. JPP needs to be well preserved for December and January.

Shaq Barrett had his playing time jacked up to 95 percent, which led the defensive line/edge rusher group. Shaq was shut out again on sacks, but keep in mind the Saints and Panthers were the only teams to shut him out last season in back-to-back games.

Ndamukong Suh was at 75 percent, and that’s likely the Bucs’ target for him.

Defensive tackle Vita Vea only took 56 percent of the snaps after being at 84 percent against New Orleans, where Joe thought Vea looked a little gassed. Through the 2019 season, Vea played just two-thirds of the defensive snaps. So maybe the Bucs just think Vea is more effective in part-time work, which would be odd for a first-round pick some people think is a Pro Bowler.

Fellow DT Rakeem Nuñez-Roches logged 47 percent, which might the most work he’s had in a Bucs uniform. If Nuñez-Roches every plays more than Vea, that would be a head-scratcher.

Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles said Anthony Nelson would get more work, and he did. The second-year linebacker saw 11 snaps versus three on opening day.

On offense, Justin Watson took 89 percent of the snaps to lead the receiving corps. And for those wondering, Donovan Smith missed just one snap when he tweaked his bad knee.

i thought the throw was a little behind the WR….

so if we put up 30+ vs CAR and get the W, will folks give BL credit or will they say brady/BA called the plays?…lol…

    ON TO CAR!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  2. 813bucboi Says:

    9penalties last week…only 5 this week…..

no running game last week…..BL found the run game this week….

BL put up more points than he did last week and couldve easily put up 40+ on sunday…..BL is creating a monster!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!

I think Shaq had a good game even without getting sacks, the Panthers were committing multiple blockers to him which freed up the guys in the middle and then they got the numbers.

  4. Jmarkbuc Says:

Vea is a beast, no doubt. Stamina has never been his strong suit however. That is worrisome.

Maybe when the weather gets cooler.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There is no question that Shaq played well & Devin White was an absolute monster!!!

  6. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Donovan Smith has a bad knee???

How about him being bad period????????

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

Shaq was getting pressure. He just didn’t get the stats to show for it.
Vea is a beast…when he’s in. For a 1st round pick, I would expect more reps. Maybe he’s still getting to “game shape”? He did have that hand issue.

  8. tom A Farkas Says:

75% of snaps for Suh is too much and JPP at 89% is not a recipe for long term success! No player over the age of 30 should get more than 70% of snaps.

  9. Bucamania Says:

JPP never wants to come off the field. He’s a warrior.

  10. Brandon Says:

Any word on Watson’s apparent injury in the 4th quarter. He went down after trying to catch a ball and was writhing in pain. I’ve checked all sites and haven’t seen anything.

Remember no preseason so don’t look too much into it…yet

  12. January1979 Says:

Brandon, he played after the injury. Looked like a stinger nothing more, the DB hit him right on the hand.

  13. Architek Says:

I’m sick of the DTs presnap penalties!!!!!’

  14. Defense Rules Says:

@813bucboi … “no running game last week…..BL found the run game this week”.

Fournette had 2 great runs yesterday: 1 for 25 yds and another for 46 yds. Bucs ran 22 times for 122 yds total. Subtract those 2 runs by Fournette and the Bucs’ run game was 20 runs for 51 yds against a meh Panthers’ DLine … an average of 2.5 YPC.

Bucs 2 longest runs last week against the Saints were 21 yds & 11 yds. Bucs ran 26 times for 86 yds last week. So if you subtract their best 2 runs (to keep it fair) that be 24 runs for 54 yds total against the Saints … 2.3 YPC average.

I’d hardly call either run ‘overpowering’. And if yesterday was any indication of us ‘finding the run game’ we better look elsewhere. Stats can be deceiving as we both know.

  15. JimmyJack Says:

Defense Rules why are you subtracting the good plays? That doesnt make sense. He actually made them plays you cant just take them away…….But fine if you do that I’m taking away Mike Evan’s two big plays and can tell you he was horrible yesterday……But I dont think that’s how it works.

  16. TOM Says:

C’mon. BL(Buc Loser) is a joke. The laughing stock of the NFL.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Not really subtracting them JimmyJack, just trying to show Bucboi that the vast majority of the run plays on Sunday (20 of 22 for 2.5 YPC average) were just about the same as the vast majority of the run plays the previous Sunday (24 of 26 for 2.3 YPC average).

I happen to be a big believer in having a strong running game, one that gets at least 45% of the plays. In order to justify that however, it has to be consistent. Explosive plays are awesome, but when you get 4 plays out of 48 in 2 games that are over 10 yds (totaling 103 yds for a 26 YPC average on those 4 plays) and the remaining 44 run plays total 105 yds for a 2.4 YPC average then that’s not very consistent. Sets us up for too many 3rd and longs.

We’ve got 2 excellent RBs in Fournette & RoJo. IMO our running game should be blowing the socks off other teams, but it’s not. The impact is that we’ve ended up in situations where we’ve had to pass more than we should. Give Brady a solid running game and he’ll pick you apart with the passing game.

  18. 813bucboi Says:

    DR

    but you are subtracting them…lol…

fournette cant take it to the house every play…lol…

you keep saying 3rd and long but your not factoring in penalties and poor execution on first down…

its not about “blowing the socks” off in the run game….its about running the effectively and efficiently…..BL produced that sunday….

now BL will continue to build off of that….

    cant subtract production….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  19. JimmyJack Says:

Defense Rules. That makes a lot of sense. You are looking for consistency…..Thanks for answering cause I hear fans do that all the time taking out the big plays like you did but I never understood their angle.

And I know you crave to run the ball like that. I enjoy smashmouth football myself but I dont think you are ever going to see it from this team.

The way I see it you have to be built that way. It takes some time to get the type of players you need and we are built 180 degrees the opposite. Heck, we dont even have a fullback on the roster.

And I think the running game we seen yesterday works perfect for us…..Have your backs moving the sticks in the passing game. Run them inside to open the seams for Brady. It beautifully complimented our pass with that fleafilcker. Great call!!!……And the holy grail can be when we get them home runs like Fournette did yesterday…..Especially when you can get them off a tired defense late in the 4th to ice the game. If we can get 5-6 games like that we are sitting pretty. Or maybe we get 12.

  20. JimmyJack Says:

Oh and it would be nice if you can pop your RBs with a fancy play for a TD pass. That happened yesterday too we just forgot to catch the freaking ball.

I trust McCoy to get right back out there and not drop that again all year.

  21. JimmyJack Says:

I’m totally cool with McCoy dropping that first pass. He knew the down and distance. He had forever to get the first and knew it. So he took his eyes of the ball trying to cheat upfield(its the only way to get the conversion).

I’m fine if he drops that pass three more times. Because hell get that 4th one and pick up a miracle first down. You watch McCoy will pick up a miracle 1st down some point this season.

But the TD drop cant happen. Was a shame too because he was having a very good day. Not many yards but clutch catches. He’s looks like a great possession reciever.

  22. ItzOK Says:

no more excuses for Vea in season three time to get his fat ass into shape. Not being ready to go t home is oawful he should be playing a lot more and dominating. A few more of these type of games and he is going to go the way of Gerald Mccoy soft ways.

  23. Oneilbucs Says:

Man vea got to get better than the way he’s been playing bro . He has no impact on the game at all .

  24. Joe in Michigan Says:

One of the best RB’s in the league had 59 rushing yards against the Bucs, and Carolina had 87 on Sunday. Although it might not show up on the stat sheet, I’d say Vea had at least a tiny bit of impact on that.

  25. Rod Munch Says:

Warren Sapp told everyone, Vita isn’t a full time player, and won’t be unless he gets down to around 300 pounds — and if he does that, then he won’t be “special”.

Vita is a good cog in the middle against the run, but he’s not a 3-down player, he’s a run stuffing 3-4 NT. Was that worth a mid-first round draft pick? Maybe.

  26. Joe in Michigan Says:

Was Haloti Ngata a good NFL player? He played 13 seasons, 32.5 sacks (2.5 per year) and 517 tackles (about 40 tackles per year), not exactly lighting up the stat sheet. I’d say he had a decent career, though. He was taken with the 12th pick in the 1st Round, same pick as Vea. Me personally, I don’t care what Vea’s stats are, as long as he’s anchoring the middle of a strong Bucs defense. Now if teams were busting off 150 yard rushing games against the Bucs, I could see your point.
