Sloppy Seconds
August 7th, 2020Buccaneers general managers and coaches have had various batting averages through The Lost Decade (2010 through 2019) and nearly all were abysmal.
During that stretch, Tampa Bay stepped up to the plate 15 times in Round 2 of the NFL Draft.
This all comes to mind for Joe as cornerback M.J. Stewart, the No. 53 overall pick in 2018, was cut by the Bucs yesterday.
The two cornerbacks taken after Stewart? Isaiah Oliver, an average but talented NFL starter for the Falcons, and above average Panthers starter Donte Jackson, who has seven interceptions in his two seasons.
Ironically, former Bucs general manager Mark Dominik (2009-2013) was on SiriusXM NFL Radio shortly after Stewart was drafted and wondered aloud what general manager Jason Licht was possibly thinking.
Oh, well, on to the history!
Here are the Bucs’ second-round picks of The Lost Decade:
Sean Murphy-Bunting (2019)
Ronald Jones (2018)
M.J. Stewart (2018)
Carlton Davis (2018)
Justin Evans (2017)
Noah Spence (2016)
Roberto Aguayo (2016)
Donovan Smith (2015)
Ali Marpet (2015)
Austin Seferian-Jenkins (2014)
Johnthan Banks (2013)
Lavonte David (2012)
Da’Quan Bowers (2011)
Brian Price (2010)
Arrelious Benn (2010)
Joe’s breath literally was taken away looking at that list.
There are a couple of superior decisions in there, and too many historic blunders.
The next wide receiver off the board after Benn was Golden Tate, and Rob Gronkowski went three picks after Benn. The Bucs liked Gronk very much, but the year before they had just coughed up a second-round pick for future serial violent felon and Vaseline aficionado Kellen Winslow, Jr.
Joe will spare readers a Da’Quan Bowers rant, and Austin Seferian-Jenkins is best known for getting kicked out of a spring practice and his stunning Tampa arrest video.
In 2016, the famous neck-up evaluations at One Buc Palace took a year off.
Hopefully, Murphy-Bunting, Davis and Jones can come through and have history remember the Bucs batting .400 in Round 2 during The Lost Decade. That would be a solid rate.
The three second-round picks prior to The Lost Decade fit in perfectly to the renowned Bucs circus show/tragic drama: Dexter Jackson, Sabby “The Goat” Piscitelli and Arron Sears.

“You win thru the draft
Any normal sports fan would have drafted Dalvin Cook and Derwin James
The last 2 years the Bucs would have been in the playoffs with Cook, Derwin James and JW3
What could and should have been”

kobe faker
you do realize that both players have missed significant time in their young careers…
also, james declined a pre draft private workout with the bucs
but you keep doing you, faker.
here is my favorite post by kobe faker from 2017
“1st rd, corey davis. 2nd rd, dede westbrook. licht can do what ever he wants with the rest of the draft and fa
both are averaging a nice 600 yards per season and dede was selected in the 4th rd
plz tell me how you would be a good gm again AFTER the fact… hindsight is 20/20 right kobe?

August 7th, 2020 at 2:02 pm
Loved me some Lars Tate 1988 going sky high over the pile into the end zone!

I suspect fans of every team in the NFL have similar gripes about their draft choices, where a 50% success rate is a massive, huge, winning %…
August 7th, 2020 at 2:04 pm
Saw Errict Rhett rush for over two hundred in person at a home game- one of my favorite Bucs memories.
August 7th, 2020 at 2:08 pm
Joe just imagine it, we could have traded a 2nd round pick to the patriots for chandler jones 2 years ago!!!
August 7th, 2020 at 2:09 pm
The last two years the picks look more promising than in previous years. Probably the BA influence.

j banks over his teammate darius slay. The list of compaints is so long. Nothing dumber than thekicker ever.

🤦♂️

Lots of great 2nd round picks in there too.
The only glaring flaw is the Aguayo experiment…
and that showed huge cajones. It was a gamble.
Howard likes Licht better than Rock Star Helmet Hair
and Bruce Almighty Helmet Hair.
At least the Glazer brats learned that hair is NOT the
most important quality in an NFL GM

Joe:
Glad this article was about 2nd round draft picks. Didn’t know where you were going with the “sloppy seconds” headline.
August 7th, 2020 at 6:21 pm
I mean I see a future HoF (LD) and about 5 quality players (Rojo, SMB, CD, AM, DS)from your list. Everyone else is trash, but decent haul. Could have always done better in retrospect.
August 7th, 2020 at 10:40 pm
I’d be curious to see this list for the teams that have been crushing it for the last decade or so.
August 8th, 2020 at 12:42 am
I feel bad for any any player in the second going back to Lovie.
August 8th, 2020 at 7:23 am
Mark Dominik criticizing Jason Licht’s draft thought process is like the guy who won “Worst Cook in America” on Food Network criticizing the second worst cook in America.
August 8th, 2020 at 10:49 am
I see 10 BUSTS on that list above.
