Devin White: It’s Not About Studying Brees

May 21st, 2020

Confidence building.

Joe talked to Devin White today on his media conference call and served up a couple of questions.

One had to do with the Buccaneers’ opening day opponent, the slimy Saints and Drew Brees.

White previously has talked about how challenging it was to play against Brees, so Joe asked White if he thinks it’s an advantage to play the Saints in Week 1 because the defense will have more time to study Brees.

No, it’s not about Brees, White said.

“We get to test ourselves and it’s a division game, so I know the intensity level will be at an all-time high,” he replied. “As far as having time to study, I think it’s more about us on defense than it is them on offense. Not taking anything away from their players .. but I feel like we got great scheme and I feel like we just got to execute our scheme.

“That’s just like last year we went into the [Saints] game with a great scheme, but us as players we didn’t execute it. Like, you know, we probably, ‘Oh, I thought I was supposed to do this.’ And then we got beat. There’s little room for error in the NFL. That’s what I came to learn over my rookie season. In college, your athletic ability can make up for a small error, but in the NFL, everybody’s just as talented as you so you can’t make up for it. So you just gotta be 100 percent locked in on your keys and make sure you’re doing everything right.”

Strong answer from White, though Joe definitely thinks getting Brees in Week 1 is a bonus for the defense. More time to prepare should help them do just what White said, “be 100 percent locked in on your keys.”

Of course, being locked in and ready doesn’t mean you’ll stop the Saints offense, which has averaged 31 points per game through its last four home openers.

I look for White to make a HUGE leap from year 1, even though I feel he played well and got better and better. Sky is the limit with this kid he has that deep love for the game and will put in the work to be best version of himself. Man all of us Bucs fans who have suffered for so long are in for a treat this year.

It’s like D. Brooks told the Lightning in the locker room during their championship season (while playing either Philthadelphia or the Flames); “We felt like it was about us (Bucs’ D). We do what we do! It’s not about them.”

As others have pointed out, it could also be advantage Bucs’ O as n.o. have never seen it with Brady or Gronk!

White had a slow start in his rookie year but he got a lot better in the second half … very smart athlete and he’s gonna have a great year

Dan I agree. For the first time opposing teams will be planning how to beat us instead of planning not to lose to use.

This is the swag we need right there! Terrific answer!

  6. Cobraboy Says:

Since D’s are ahead of O’s early in the season, I’m totally OK with the Aint’s on opening day.

Hell, didn’t Fitz bomb the crap out of them before on opening day?

    Great coverage!!

  9. Rod Munch's 2007 Saturn Says:

The worse lies are the ones we tell ourselves (like when we brag about being rich on the internet and get found out for owning and driving a 2007 Saturn that we can’t even afford to modify)

  10. Rod Munch's 2007 Saturn Says:

I don’t know why Saturn failed as a brand, they used to make the best sports lux convertible vehicles in the world, especially around 2007

Again agree completely! I thought he had an underrated season as it was. He started with the unfortunate knee injury. When that healed he started improving rapidly.

As much as I’m excited about Brady, D.R.’s defensive poundings have gotten to me. I’m ready to enjoy this D this year and D White and the three now four young guys playing in back…the vets up front…

I’m as excited to see if this D can really reach it’s full potential. I’m not certain that they won’t actually be better than our O.

Our D will have to be awesome though to get any real run because it’s become TB12 all the time…toss in Gronk…ME13..CG14…that’s a lot of star power to blot out the D’s light.

Yeah GOOD LUCK with that !

    Saint

Agree completely for our defense to succeed we need luck especially injury avoidance.

Outside of Brady…I like the depth now on our O. Obviously WR is loaded. Haeg is great depth for the OL…a former starter who can play several positions…and of course Wirfs. RB is still a bit of a ? But overall I feel the O is deeper than our D

    As a saints fan,

I’ll have to say that this advantage goes both ways. It has to do with who is more creative.

But based on the saints post season showings, I don’t give them a necessary advantage here. Payton seems to think what works once will always work, and we’ve seen what happens …

  15. Craig Says:

Devin caught one quickly after the injury

Now he can see the nuance of how a team lines up.

He is going to have a big year and that will make the rest of the defense better.

Brady will do the same for the offense.
