This Would Rock The Draft

April 5th, 2020

Shocker up his sleeve?

If the Bucs plan to freak out NFL fans and the NFL world on the first night of the draft, this would do it.

Over at Draft Wire from USA Today, Luke Easterling has the Bucs with a, well, interesting pick that would certainly get the football world’s attention just about as much as signing Tom Brady.

Easterling has the Bucs drafting lightning-fast receiver Henry Ruggs of Alabama at No. 14 overall.

Henry Ruggs III | WR | Alabama

Just hear me out on this. Yes, the Bucs already have two Pro Bowl wide receivers in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. But this draft is all about helping Tom Brady win immediately, and there’s not an offensive lineman or running back worth taking at this pick, especially over an explosive playmaker like Ruggs. He immediately gives Brady the NFL’s most dangerous trio of wide receivers, bringing elite speed Evans and Godwin simply don’t have.

Now Joe’s not saying he agrees with this pick but Easterling makes a helluva lot of sense. Ruggs would easily have the most impact on an offense, that’s for sure.

This is sort of the same mentality Joe has when Joe previously touted Penn State speed demon K.J. Hamler in the third round. Hamler is insanely fast and Arians loves guys who can stretch the field and take the top off, if for no other reason than to take heat off Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. It’s why the Bucs signed Breshad Perriman last year and drafted Scotty Miller.

Here is what scouts told Bob McGinn of The Athletic about Ruggs.

Henry Ruggs, Alabama (5-11, 188): He led everyone at the combine with a 4.24 in the 40, not to mention a vertical jump of 42 inches and a broad jump of 10 feet, 9 inches. “He’s super fast,” said one scout. “Speed, speed, speed. He’s really good.” Ruggs had 98 receptions, a 17.5-yard average and 24 touchdown catches in a three-year career. “Go look at the top 20 receivers that have run fast and none of them are any good,” another scout said. “People say, ‘Ruggs ran 4.2. He’s going to be a Hall of Famer.’ He was essentially, in Alabama’s offense, the third guy. He was really a specialist where they designed certain plays for him, mainly that over route where he goes from one side of the field to the other … and outruns everybody. He is fast, but when people get on him, you don’t see the same speed and route-running. He’s not a make-you-miss player. If you use him for what his strengths are, he’ll be good in your offense. If you expect him to come in and be your No. 1 receiver, I don’t see that. He’s a space-vertical linear route runner that needs space to catch the ball.”

And here is how the Czar of the Playbook, Emory Hunt of Football Gameplan, broke down Ruggs in his 2020 draft guide (only $10!).

Strengths:
– Explosive speed. If he gets a free release, it’s over.
– Shows proficiency in stacking the defensive back if he has beaten him and is able to run away from off coverage.
– Good hands catcher, and subsequently good with the ball in his hands
– A legitimate threat to score on on every play.
– He’s got really good footwork and plays a strong game.

Areas of Improvement:
– Getting off from bump press, and press coverage in general could use work and refining.
– Vs zone coverage, looks as if he’s thinking on the fly and doesn’t play as fast.

Joe doesn’t think the Bucs would do this, but then again, Arians is Mr. No-Risk-It; No-Biscuit.

Just for the reaction it would spark, Joe would be highly entertained by this selection.

I wouldn’t agree with this pic but if they did it I wouldn’t be too pissed. I would take ruggs against any teams 3rd cornerback

  2. Bucsfan951 Says:

Call me crazy but why do I see a very heavy offensive draft coming this yr? I just think it’s gonna be “weapons for Brady” this draft. Maybe a 4th or 5th on the defensive side of the ball. Just my opinion tho

  3. Jonzey Says:

I don’t think we need him

  4. Joe in Michigan Says:

Well, Ruggs is a good football player. BA loves speed. Gut feeling says he goes higher than 14, as John Ross did when he came out. Other NFL teams love speed, too.

  5. Pa Privateer Says:

If the bucs want more picks to burn on another WR, then the bucs have to trade back and get more picks.

I am fine with a burner WR, but only after RT and RB are taken.

On a side note, I like Jalen Hurts

  6. SB Says:

I wouldn’t agree with this pick.
But I build homes for a living.
    Go Bucs!!!

  7. 541BucsFan Says:

WR … no. I was guessing DT Kinlaw, then OT Thomas, then S McKinney, now I’m back to a Thomas. It’s Thomas fo sure … until it’s not.

  8. Ricky Ricardo Says:

Honestly, I would trade back twice in the first round, then take the best Rb in Rd 1, then either trade back into the 1st rd or stay in 2nd 2ith about 3 2nd rd picks and extra 3rds as well.

Rd1- Best Rb (Whoever that is- we still only have 1 pick…unless they can get another from a team loaded with 1st rounders)
Rd2- Best Ot left, Best Dline or Edge Left or Qb, Best Safety Left (includes +2 picks from potential trades)
Rd3- Best Edge Rush, Best Wr left, Best Oline left (Includes +2 picks for potential trades)
Rd4- Best Linebacker, Best Rb left (We have 2 picks including compensatory)

With the extra picks, provided they can make the trade back a couple times that should be easy. Sure it’d be great to grab specific guys in the first rd that everyone’s talking about, but we need a Rb that can be a game changed right now.

We can get other guys that can fit and play well if coached well and they themselves decide to try hard. Do new guys want to go to the Bucs and disappoint the GOAT? Prob not. They will work their tails off (We hope).

  9. Pewter Power Says:

Lol yea like media starting the rumor of Brady to the 49ers. So every week someone is going to embarrass themselves for the sake of getting attention. Deepest wide receiver class and we would go that route after getting Godwin in the third round. Lol he’d probably have a salary in line with Godwin, Perriman was our number one at the end of the season and we were still effective except for Rhe interceptions

If the plan is to get another receiver with the first pick you’d be saying to a 43 year old qb yea we will make you throw it 50-60 times a game. Nonsense because everyone in the front office should be fired. Can’t name 3 receivers for Saints last year dumb idea to even suggest

  10. 941bucsfan Says:

BA said if you draft an O lineman you are grooming him for the next coach… With that being said, the bucs will deff go RB or WR with their pick in round 1

  11. ©MadMax Says:

If BA wants to go that route, I’d rather trade down and grab Jeudy or Denzel Mims. We have enough great weapons at wideout, including Brate at TE, but much more need in weaker areas.

But for real value, save it for Van Jefferson in the 3rd or 4th. That kid has it too.

  12. JimbobBucsFan Says:

I find this idea intriguing. It is thinking out of the box as they say.

As much as I think we should be targeting OL I really don’t expect the Bucs to take one with our fourteenth pick.

  13. Jean Lafitte Says:

I still think it’s most imperative to keep Brady upright but the thought of drafting the best speedy wide receiver in this deep draft at the position is an intriguing idea but unorthodox in principle. It certainly wouldn’t lose value at #14 like selecting a RB at #14.

  14. AwShbucs Says:

Speed definitely matters. Evidenced by the fact that the 2 fastest teams in the league were both in the SB last year.

But idk.. with as deep as this draft is at receiver, and considering we do have a kid with elite speed in Scotty Miller who was starting to come on strong last year, I’m not so sure that taking Ruggs would have more of impact on this offense than Jonathan Tayler or an Elite prospect at RT.

  15. Swampbuc Says:

    Easterling is a farging moron.

  16. ElBajito43 Says:

This is Sad 😞 BUCS MUST DRAFT OL or trade out of first rd to play sim city with the personnel, again TRASH 🗑 MAN LICHT will probably find a way to mess up some of these draft day decisions.

  17. KingTampa Says:

If you’re going to take a WR in the first you take Justin Jefferson and don’t look back. Ruggs isn’t 1/4 the wr Jefferson is. Period.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

So today we have an OLine comprised of Donovan Smith (LT), Marpet (LG), Jensen (C), Cappa (RG) and then … oh ya, take your pick of Haeg, Seaton, Bailey, Stinnie or Fabiano. Right now we have $13.1 mil in salary Cap space BEFORE we sign our rookie class ($7.8 mil but we’d gain at least $4.8 mil when the bottom-7 get replaced by our rookie class).

That leaves us with very close to $10.0 mil to do other ‘stuff’ after we sign the rookie class (assuming all of them make the team of course). When I look at where the Bucs still NEED help, I see OLine, RB, WR#3, DLine, Safety and backup QB. Those last two … Safety & backup QB … scream for quality veterans. We could get away with quality rookies in the others. So assuming the Bucs do that eventually (sign a veteran quality QB & Safety), that’ll pretty much eat up our remaining salary Cap UNLESS we make more $$$ available by restructuring contracts or trading/releasing players.

IOW, building a TEAM that can compete for the playoffs will require a very smart draft that fills in those remaining holes with quality talent. Our Top-2 picks have to be starters (RT & RB) and our Next-2 picks have to become key rotational players (WR#3 & DLine). Why? Because we can’t afford to BUY those positions on the open market.

So media can talk all they want about who to pick first, second, etc but in the end we’d better wind up drafting a Tackle, RB, DLineman & slot WR in the Top-4 picks if we expect to compete with the big boys.

  19. onetrickpony Says:

    I hoping for the biggest,baddest,bowling ball of a rb,first

  20. Bucs Guy Says:

Draft one of the big 4 OTs if available. If not trade back to 17-21 and draft Jones or Cleveland at T. I love Kinlaw and Brown, but this is a deep DT draft and you can get a very good DT in the 2nd or 3rd (Mameboike, Blacklack, Gallimore, Elliot, Hamlinton). Draft CEH at RB, then your DT in the 2nd. You can’t give up on building for the future.

  21. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

Don’t agree at all. We need protection for Brady, and we have a burner in Miller. However, I think that between Arians, Licht, and Brady they will draft the best pick for the team.

  22. Bucs Guy Says:

I know everyone says go all in for 2 years – that’s how you become the Florida Marlins. Yes, get everything you can for Brady, but you still need to build long term. The Bucs need another 2nd round pick, so trade OJ or trade back in the 1st if one of the big 4 OTs isn’t there and get the next best OT (Jones, Cleveland); then sign Dotson for insurance.
    1. Upgrade at LT by trading D.Smith and a day 3 pick (4th or 5th) for all pro Trent Williams after the draft. Sign Williams to an $18M a year 4-yr contract with no bonus and only guaranteed for 2 years. When the contract is done, your 1st rd RT will be ready for his big contract and Williams is retiring so you don’t have big $ tied up in 2 Tackles.
    2. Suh is on a 1year contract and sliding down. Draft his replacement (Madubuike, Blacklock, Hamilton, Gallimore, Elliott) in the 2nd.
    3. Can’t count on S Justin Evans being healthy. Draft his replacement (Davis, Dugger or Chinn).
    4. This is a very deep RB and WR draft. Get your RB in the 2nd (CEH) and WR in the 4th or 5th. Remember, this is your #3 WR, not you #1.
    5. Jensen is expensive for a C, though I love the attitude, and could be a cap casualty in a year. Draft his potential replacement in 4th.
    6. You can never have enough edge rushers (supplemental 4th),
    7. You need a pounding RB for short yardage, goal line situations. Draf Taylor Jr in the sixth.
    8. Go all in on a QB in rd 1 of 2021. QB picks on day 3 are a waste. Name 2 that have been 8-10 year starters in the last 20 years and not named Brady. The only QB worth drafting on Day 2 if you have a bunch of extra picks is Jalen Hurt.
    9. Post draft, pick up a veteran CB.
    10. Bring in XFL Dallas Kicker for competition.

  23. JP09 Says:

It’s not a bad idea at all, look at MEs hamstring issues over the years and Godwin had the same problem last year. I’d prefer Juedy if he available though

  24. Krool Says:

I love it! Make them FEAR this attack.

I know this might not be the smartest move but I would still love it!

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You can’t have enough WRs or CBs…….but, I think we are OK at WR….From my checking Ruggs wasn’t used in the return game since 2017 where he only had moderate success….

We really need to fill the OT & RB slots……I’d go RB over WR because Brady loves using the RBs….

No, I wouldn’t be unhappy with the pick…….love the speed….

  26. Joe Exotic Bucs Fan Says:

In Easterling’s scenario Kinlaw is still available when we pick. I believe that we would take Kinlaw or trade back if this were to happen.

  27. SKBucsFan Says:

The Bucs didn’t need a tight end a few drafts ago and Licht picked one in the first round so this pick would not surprise me. At least it would better than a running back. I hope he builds the trenches but until I am the GM I can’t guarantee he will.

  28. JA Says:

For the first time, in a long time, I agree with most of these posts. You could have the best receivers on the planet, but how effective could they be if the QB gets killed every time he tries to get them the ball?
O-line or bust with pick #1!

  29. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe made fun of Scotty Miller…..as did others……but I believe that BAs constant public goading early-on regarding Miller’s hamstring was uncalled for. I believe he came back early and re-injured it…..I’m not quite sure he was ever 100%…..
    We’ll see……
I do think we need to draft a WR…..hopefully one who is a good PR/KR…..but not in the 1st round.

  30. El Buco Realisto Says:

The “real” fans could be for this, but it would be in contingent of a plan in other “bold” moves!!!!!! As in getting RB’s in the second round, fifth and signing a college free agent, and may the best men be on the roster!!!!!!!!!!!! Trade OJ for a three this year, and a pick next year based on performance!!!!!!!! Turn the cap savings from the OJ trade and sign a RT and Blocking TE free-agent after draft for 4 million a piece, as the market will be flooded, as the deep OT draft makes room on rosters!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So that is WR 1sr round, RB 2nd round, best D-line, and O-line from the two 3rd round picks!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. Joe in Michigan Says:

OJ Howard salary is under $2 million. Not much of a cap savings.

  32. Joe in Michigan Says:

    *Howard’s

  33. Gettinthebucs Says:

No! No! God No! Noooooo! I’m hoping you get the Office reference but in all seriousness no thank you. OT, RB, OG/C. That’s where we need to focus. If they want speed that bad then they should call one of Arians old friend JJ Nelson. Could probably get him pretty cheap.

  34. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I see no way we take Ruggs, at number one.

  35. PSL Bob Says:

Sounds like a Tyreek Hill of the Chiefs. Just get the ball to him and let him do the rest. Of course getting the ball to him will be difficult without a stout offensive line protecting Brady. One of the top 4 consensus O-line players should remain our top priority at #14, provided one of them is still available.

  36. TheBradyBunch Says:

My first option would be trade down to the low 20s, draft Swift first, Jackson or Peart with our 2nd pick. Would have no problem if they go wide receiver with our second 2nd round pick, or getting one in the 3rd.

  37. Bucs Guy Says:

Trade OJ, get more picks. Use some to trade up. You may be able to get a 2nd and 4th/5th. The Patriots don’t have a 2nd (yet), but have 3 x 3rd round picks and 3 x 6th round picks. If they would trade 2 of the 3rd rd and 1 of the 6th, the Bucs may be able to turn these into a late 2nd round pick. Indy, Miami, Chicago and Seattle all have two 2nd round picks if you could trade OJ to one of them.

There are a lot of very good players in rounds 1-3. The Bucs need to get to picks in these rounds for OT, RB, DT, S and G/C.

  38. rrsrq Says:

Jeff Thomas of U of Miami, did not have a good combine, had some ups and downs in college, but his game speed is fast, can probably be gotten in round six and would bring competition and be a steal.

  39. TOM Says:

First off let me say Easterling is an idiot who doesn’t have any idea what he’s talking about. WR is not a priority so why waste 1st pick. Ot needs to be 1st pick even if it means moving up a few spots to 9 or 10 to get the one theBucs covet. I don’t think any of the top four will last to pick 14. And who’s to say that Jones or Jackson won’t be as good or better than the top 4. I don’t know for the life of me why every tom dick & harry has a mock draft. Most have no clue what they are talking about. I guess they just want to see there name in print.

  40. TheBradyBunch Says:

Just stop with all the “trade OJ” stuff. OJ showed during his rookie year what he is capable of. Brady is able to maximize use with tight ends. OJ is way too valuable considering the QB change. By the end of the season you will be eating crow for ever suggesting that.

  41. George Rauh Says:

This is the best WR draft in years. No need to pick WR in the first round, you can get 1st round talent in the 3rd round. Goodwin was a third round WR. There are only so many balls to go around. Evans and Godwin 3,000, Brate and Howard 1,200, other WR 500, running back 500. That is 5,200 yards. there is no room for a top WR, it would be a waste.

  42. lowercaseg Says:

clearly not a need but it is what it is

  43. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Yeah, that’s not going to happen.

A real shocker would be a trade up to take a top Quarterback in the first round.
We can get a RT in the second round, but not without draft capital that the trade would give up, so it won’t happen either.

No, Round 1 will either be a OL or QB at 14. It;s possible we might trade up or down 2-3 spots, but that’s pretty much it.
A mock have Jacob Eason going right after we pick a safety. The Bucs should take him themselves in that situation. We can put off a safety until 3rd round or later, but we need OL and QB the most. Then RB.

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    SKBucsFan Says
“The Bucs didn’t need a tight end a few drafts ago…”

Actually, this is not true. We did need one. We had just given up on ASJ.

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Tom Brady is great, but he can’t do his thing without an offensive line. We MUST address OL early.

Trading OJ might be a good idea if it is to get a great right tackle. Otherwise, it makes no sense.

  46. Jeagan1999 Says:

I’m not opposed to getting another weapon at WR for Brady to utilize, but not in Round 1. We’ve got to get a solid RT prospect to shore up the line, and there a 4-5 really good ones….I think one of them will be available at 14.

Here’s where to look if you want to add another WR….Round 3…K.J. Hill, from Ohio State! He would be great slot guy for TB. He is the all time reception leader at OSU, runs great routes, has sure hands, and a knack for moving the chains! While not super fast (he ran a 4.60 at the combine), he is sneaky quick, runs very precise routes and has enough wiggle to be dangerous after the catch!

Get a OT in Round 1. A RB in Round 2. Hill in Round 3. A DL or CB and….(since we have 2 fourth round picks) a QB (I like Morgan from FIU or the McDonald kid from Hawaii)

That would be a Draft I would salivate over!

  47. Marine Buc Says:

If we draft a receiver in the first round we better move up into the late first and draft an OT (Niang, Jones or Cleveland). We have find a starting RT or we are in big trouble.

  48. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I agree with Bonzi. I would like to see Eason be a Buc!

  49. Lord Says:

You take Kinlaw DT in this mock scenario

Or move back and take Jones OT

  50. Destinjohnny Says:

    Bama is my team.
I think if Henry ran a 4.5 forty with his skill set.
He would be a late round pick.
He is fast as hell but I agree with what the guy at the athletic said.
The receivers to get late that were badasses were the ole miss guys last year.
We only have one scout that handles the entire southeast.so we don’t catch a lot of those things.

  51. JP09 Says:

You could also get Quez Watkins in the later rounds

  52. Lord Says:

Damn in this mock we could have

    1-DT Javon Kinlaw
    2-OT Isaiah Wilson
    3-RB Clyde Edwards Helair

That’d be amazing. I would be fine with the rest of that draft regardless at that point lol but I’d go speed WR R4 since the value is deep.

S/OG/Edge/RB BPA rest of the way

  53. gotbbucs Says:

Uhhhh, no. There’s no way that would be the pick if the draft fell like that. Taking the 3rd or 4th best WR at #14 in a deep wide receiver class would be asinine. Kinlaw would be the pick in that scenario.

  54. DBS Says:

Bonzi, We don’t get anything. The Team does.

  55. Echase Says:

We need Defense, we need a future QB, we need O-line. We need a returner with speed. This team is far from being a contender. it is, what it is. Average team with an old QB.

  56. Big Bad Booty Daddy Says:

Never happen.. bucs need to shore up the O-line.. they keep Brady protected 4-5 seconds hell pick the D apart w/ any receiver.. I should know ive watch him play in person for 20 yrs @ the razor…dude doesnt need gimic redeivers or plays.. he needs protection & a running game & a RB that can catch the ball in the backfield.. smarten up punks..

  57. BucEmUp Says:

I wouldnt hate the pick, but think it shoukd be oline and dline in the first two rounds. It would be stupid to not draft a qb to sit under Brady for the next couple of years in the 3rd or 4th round as well. But it would be nice to have a tyreek hill like threat out there

  58. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs very rarely do what us fans want. So I’m hopin we trade our 1st pick and get 3 2nd rders.

  59. Erick Says:

Posted this a couple weeks ago.

I know this might sound crazy, but I think there is a possibility of Bucs drafting a WR in 1st round of draft. Here me out:

    1. Arians, Brady, and (especially) Light are in win NOW mode. Two of those guys will be retiring in the next couple years regardless, and the other is fighting for a future as a GM.

    2. Arians has stated before that drafting and OL is only going to help the coach after you. I think they are happy with Haeg, and will address the depth in later rounds. I don’t see the top 4 tackles being there at 14 anyway.

    3. Arians runs 11 personnel, (1 RB, 1 TE) as his favorite package, which needs a 3rd receiver with Perriman gone.

    4. Definitely need a RB, but think you can get better value in 2nd round. Should be several to choose from (Swift, Taylor, Akers).

Imagine how dangerous this offense would be if Henry Ruggs III was the 3rd receiver? Add in a Swift or Taylor in the 2nd and yikes. I know it’s unlikely, but exciting to think about.

  60. Gofortheface30 Says:

Mad max – trade BACK and grab Jeudy? What in the world makes you think he’s going to be around late 1st round? He’s a top 1 pick my guy

  61. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

Scotty Miller is almost as fast as Ruggs… And he started coming into his own late in the year.. Miller can be our speed guy… He seems like the exact kind of dude that Brady would turn into a superstar in New England…

  62. JimmyJack Says:

So you wanna draft a kid that’s all set to be a number 1 WR somewhere. Take a guy that’s gearing up to make a big name for himself and make him your number 3? So he’s gonna be fine sitting on the bench for a good portion of the snaps? Man if that the plan he better be the humbliest kid in the whole draft. He better be like priesthood type humble.

  63. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Mike

    At last we agree! LOL

As far as this pick it just makes ZERO sense to me. So do we think Brady is coming here to be bombs away? He has the top two possession receivers in the game for a guy who knows where to place the ball that is invaluable..not some DJAX rabbit…there will be plenty of speed to be had very last and in fact some UDFA’s…again…there is only ONE football…now we have to spread it to ME..CG..Brate…OJ…whichever RB we draft out of the backfield…the VERY LAST THING we need is a speed burner at wideout. Plus it’s not part and parcel of Brady’s game…he certainly worked well with Moss getting behind the D but Moss is arguably the GOAT with all due respect to Rice.

    D.R.

I tried to engage in this debate earlier but the software wouldn’t let me through.

I largely agree with your needs except for a vet QB unless one will play for Gabbert money. Here is where we disagree. I’m like BA…I’m not as uncomfortable with Gabbert as everybody else.

Look at his 2015 numbers on a poorly coached 5-11 Jim Tomsula 49er team.

Gabbert started 8 games..went 3-5…completed 63% of his passes with a TD % higher than his int %…2,000+ yards…10 TD’s…7 ints..85 throws for first downs…11.4 yards per completion.

Not stellar numbers but they project to a 4,000+ 20TD 14 int full season. If he went 3-5 with that crappy team is it unreasonable to expect him to do better with our targets…and hopefully renewed running game…5-3 would be fine from a backup who is holding down the fort…10-6 gets us to the playoffs.

So it comes down to do we believe BA can coach another season like that 2015 season out of Gabbert. Apparently he thinks he can.

I wouldn’t mind spending a 4th or lower on a QB project like the kid from Princeton…but we have some big needs as you’ve identified. I want two RB’s to finally fix that position…Dillon and CEH or Akers…the OT in the first or 2nd…then defensive help..safety…DL depth to replace Allen.

Bottom line…Blaine Gabbert is not the glamour pick but he has put up one year on a bad team with decent numbers and he will protect the ball and give our D a chance to win.

Now let er rip I love debating guys who use facts and not ad hom and hyperbole.

  64. stpetebucsfan Says:

    JJ

    “priesthood type humble.”

    EXACTLY!

  65. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs have complete garbage on the depth chart beyond Evans and Godwin – they got nothing that should be on an NFL field – and no, the 6 quarters that Miller was healthy before being injured again doesn’t make me think he’s an NFL starter. Anywho this is what I’ve been saying to do for weeks. Take a top tackle if they’re there, but if a run happens then a top WR will fall – if that happens – get the WR. That’s literally the place the team needs depth the most. Also Licht has a great record of getting offensive lineman in the 2nd and even 3rd, so I trust him to get someone.

@Go, yeah I know, i didnt mean late 1st, i mean trade back 2-5 spots. He might go top 10 though.

  67. SOEbuc Says:

May be the dumbest statement yet.

    1) We have Evans, Godwin, Brate, OJ, and Watson.
    2) Joe how many articles have you written with analyst’s and theories that 43-year old Tom Brady can’t pass down field in Bruce Arians offense and then pick up a “Benny the jet” WR in the first.

Nice try guy. Not happening. WR the fifth at the earliest because receiving corp is not on our deep dark whole. Of course we’re probably going to get a RB early but I think we need to do what we say every year and stack the trenches. One can only hope for Kinlaw, which even though I never totally trust mocks after OJ was in the top 10 for most, but it still seems like he could be around at #14. Maybe an OLB or S in the mix if we end up getting an extra pick.

  68. ©MadMax Says:

@Bonzai, the one move in a trade up that would be awesome is if we traded with the Panthers for their 7th and snatched Simmons. Theres our Safety for a few years and then he’ll be primed to take over at LB when David retires. But i dont see that happening. If we did trade up and Wirfs or Wills was still there, that would be the more likely scenario. I’d rather stay put and wait for Thomas though. He could also be our future LT in a year or two and we’ll find another RT.

  69. Hethrew 30 Says:

Tom Brady is not the guy that’s needed help winning. It was Winston. And Winston couldn’t do it well with Evans, Godwin, Brate and Perriman. Marginal improvements in hitting a receiver in stride in season 5 and regressing in other critical categories the the issue. I can only imagine how bad the Bucs would have had it been Winston with loser bookends to match him. OT, QB, RB. Stop the WR nonsense.

  70. SOEbuc Says:

Two day three jet WR are Quartney Davis (Texas A&M) and Devin Duverney (Texas). Track stars in the slot that run great route’s and have hands. Sounds like a Tom Brady connection in the slot to me.

  71. Bucamania Says:

This draft is clear. Get one of the Top 4 OL at 14 or trade back. Get a RB in the second (Clyde or JK) and best available player after that.

  72. SOEbuc Says:

MadMax…Honestly who the hell knows when LVD will retire though. He’s thirty now and people outside the Bucs don’t realize it but he is still killing it. Our LB corp was sick last year and will continue with Bowels. Unless major injury, LVD will get paid well next year for another three/four year contract as UFA in 2021. Nassib lose was huge. I don’t even know who’s starting OLB on opposite Shaq right now. Gholston? O’Conner? Not guys that bring the pressure to the QB opposite JPP and Shaq. If we didn’t get Kinlaw and wanted to trade down for another second round pick I’d be very down to pick up a RT and I’m really hyped on OLB Zack Baun (Wisconsin) lately. You look at his tape compared to Bowels scheme and it looks like he could be Shaq 2.0.

  73. C2asante Says:

The above scenario with Ruggs and Swift seems impractical and unlikely but it would be undeniably exciting to watch

  74. Rod Munch Says:

It’s amazing these idiots that didn’t even watch the end of last year are telling us we are fine at WR depth because we have two TE’s we don’t use. LOL! Truly, world class idiots.

Anywho dolts, if you actually watched the last two games what you would see is that Winston had only one guy to throw the ball to, and that was Perriman. Watson was God awful, shouldn’t ever see the field on offense again — and can anyone even name who #3, #4 and #5 was? Then you had Brate dropping a critical pass at the Houston 30 with 3 mins left on 4th and 2 — and the series before that you had OJ dropping a huge deep ball. In the last game the Falcons finally figured out that if you just double Perriman, there was literally no one else on the field that was getting open.

Anyone who doesn’t think the Bucs absolutely have to have WR are morons whose opinion is as worthless as used toilet paper.

Turn the cap savings from the OJ trade

    @El Buco Realisto:

I thought you portray yourself to be a realist. What cap savings from an OJ Howard trade? Both Overthecap and Spotrac suggest that the most saving the Buc’s would get is 1.4 million if he were involved in a trade. On top of that who pays 4 million dollars for a blocking free agent tight end.

  76. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

The Bucs would be fools to draft a WR with the 1st round pick.

  77. ©MadMax Says:

@SOE, thats the beauty of drafting Simmons….he can fill that role of OLB, ILB, or Safety (SS or FS). I know we need RT, but dang we need this freak Simmons on our D. Baun looks good too (2nd or 3rd) if we dont trade up for Simmons.

Thing is, if the other team can hardly score but we can…win win win!

Simmons would make our team the scariest to face since our SB D.

  78. Buczilla Says:

I like your idea of taking Hamler in the 3rd round over taking this dude at 14. We need help on both lines and a 3 down running back more than this guy. All that said, I won’t cry if we get him at 14.

  79. Owlykat Says:

I was all for trading OJ last year based on his awful performance, likely trying to be traded since he didn’t like the way BA uses TEs. However, that all goes out the window with the change to Brady and BA willing to change his Offense to best use Brady’s talents. Now O.J. is not stupid! He knows what a great TE means to Brady. He saw Gronk become a superstar TE. Now we would be stupid to trade O.J. He will become a go to for Brady. You just watch.
The first pick is for starters and not for third best WRs. This is a very deep WR draft. You can get a WR with the second 4th pick. Get a top OT in the first round period!

  80. JP09 Says:

@Rod didn’t you say you’d sign Winston at 30-33 million per year, if anyone’s opinion is worthless it’s yours sir, however this is coming from a guy who knows nothing about football

  81. Dan the bucs fan Says:

No way this is silly. Its like when we took Howard when we already had a good tight end. WR is our best postion by far om the team. At 14 we take the best olineman available period end of story! Address the oline yes having a competent Qb instantly makes the line better. I realize Winston held the ball longer then any qb in history but we need to address the oline.

  82. Jsternh Says:

Wrong. Brady is about ball control and precision routes. The last things he wants is some college kid running around HIS offense like a chicken with his head cut off. What Brady wants is a veteran slot receiver. Plain and simple.

  83. ©MadMax Says:

^ great point Jster….so who do you have in mind?

  84. lambchop Says:

Ruggs may be gone before we pick, but getting Ruggs makes no sense. We need a pass catching RB and a RT. There will be a RT available at 14 and it may very well be one of the top 4.

This is such a Matt Millen thing to do. No!

  85. lambchop Says:

If the OTs are all gone by 14, you trade down! Get more picks and get the best RB at a lower pick in the first Rd.

I’ll be pissed if they stand pat and get a effin WR at 14. It’s not happening that way. No no no.
