Scary Comps

April 23rd, 2020

NFL comparison.

You know the Bucs need a running back. Joe knows the Bucs need a running back.

But for years the folks at One Buc Palace either didn’t see it or didn’t know it. Former Bucs scout Pat Kirwan, current co-host of the fantastic “Movin’ the Chains” heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, believes the Bucs are in denial about the need for a running back.

The Bucs have largely stunk out loud at running back for how long? And the Bucs have largely stunk out loud for how long? Coincidence?

Joe is hoping this dark period ends this weekend. However, seeing is believing.

Joe trusts the view of former Cowboys personnel guru Gil Brandt, who made it to the Hall of Fame for his contribution to the game and to building the Cowboys dynasties of the 1960s and 1970s.

In breaking down his top-six running backs, he awards each running back an NFL comp to help fans understand each back’s traits.

Jonathan Taylor = Melvin Gordon.
D’Andre Swift = Shane Vereen.
J.K. Dobbins = Jonathan Stewart.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire = Maurice Jones-Drew.
Zach Moss = Chris Carson.
Cam Akers = Doug Martin.

Joe hopes Taylor, who has been linked to the Bucs, has more tread on his tires than Gordon but then again, Taylor had 926 carries in college playing in a ground-and-pound league, which is just bonkers.

Vereen is underrated. Joe always like Stewart. CEH is MJD? AOK for Joe.

Lastly, poor Akers.

TAMPA TWO in the episode below features Bucs legend Derrick Brooks talking about drafting a running back. All the fun is presented by Caldeco Air Conditioning & Heating. More draft talk served up by The Identity Tampa Bay.

Ridiculous comp. he’s basically a Dalvin Cook clone. Doug Martin…..lol some people

  2. Swampbuc Says:

If Doug Martin didn’t go to drugs and partying he’d have become the Bucs all time rusher without a doubt. Obviously Brandt’s talking about 2012 and 2015 Doug. That guy was a beast and the complete dude.

  3. BigHog Says:

Not on the list …AJD “THE REAL DEAL” ….Stop playing around and get a thumper!!!

  4. Ocala Says:

Doug Martin comp would mean he loves doing drugs every day.
    stupid comp

  5. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

    These comparisons are ridiculous.

JK Dobbins is Jonathan Stewart? Lmao

  6. Bucsfan1988 Says:

CEH is a poor mans MJD in terms of speed. MJD ran 4.39 40-time and CEH was 4.60. Similar build except MJD had tree-trunk legs….MJD was a beast to deal with!

    Still like CEH though 🙂

  7. Bird Says:

    Clyde the glide 2.0

  8. rrsrq Says:

Being a comp fo DM22, that is not bad when you look at DMs best years, with a decent offensive line, he shined and he was one heck of a college player. I will take a more consistent DM 22, besides, I think we need a compliment to ROJO, like the Panthers had with Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams in the backfield

  9. mark2001 Says:

Yes, Taylor has alot of carries…how else can you break Hershel Walkers Record in three years of college play. But he has no major injury…has missed few games, and is very intelligent. So if we draft him, I wouldn’t worry at all about him being “worn out”.

  10. Ndog Says:

Am I the only one that just cannot stand Rick Stroud? I mean seriously I cannot stand the guy he basically is useless just regurgitates whatever he’s told and pimps whatever the Bucs want to pimp, it’s disgusting. What happened to actual being a reporter and not a shill?

  11. Ndog Says:

Sorry so off topic I just can’t stand the guy.

  12. miken Says:

I like clyde… but nothing wrong with being compared to a rookie of the year.

  13. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

I don’t see it. Cam Akers doesn’t have MJD build or running style. He reminds me of a slighter shorter and slower Edgerrin James.

  14. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

    *Doug Martin

  15. gotbbucs Says:

    These are strange comparisons.

I respect Gil Brandt’s career, but at a certain point the mind starts to go.

  16. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Hahaha, no way is Cam Akers like Dalvin Cook. Cook was and is far and away better than Akers.

    It’s CEH for me.

  17. 2020 Year of the GOAT Says:

Ndog he is a politically correct Biaatch !!

  18. martinii Says:

I could buy into any of the above but right now my head is still spinning after reviewing PFT’s only mock draft. KENNETH MURRY?????????. Didn’t we draft a MLB in White last year? Somehow I have always respected Florio’s football savvy, but he just lost it.

  19. 541BucsFan Says:

J.K. Dobbins = Johnathan Stewart. Huh?

    Stewart 245 lbs
    Dobbins 215

Don’t get me wrong I like Dobbins. I just don’t agree with the comparison.

  20. Admiral Redbeard Says:

Would have loved to see comps on AJ Dillon and Antonio Gibson. Those are the two we should be focusing on getting, because they can be had in later rounds, fit our needs, and we need the early rounds for OL/DL.

  21. Buccaboo Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if all of the top OL guys are gone and we trade down a bit for an extra pic and snag the top RB. I just really don’t see an E. Elliot or Saquan in this draft. OL Ezra Cleveland later.
BTW-Where is Mike Evans? I have not heard or seen anything from him. Any insight Joe?

  22. Oneilbucs Says:

    A.J. Dillon

  23. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

If you compare Dobbins to Stewart, you never watched either of them play. That is a joke, which means the rest of the comparisons are probably semi-idiotic as well. I like Akers a lot – and a lot better than Martin.

  24. NDog is an idiot Says:

His comps suck!! CEH or Akers! Rewatched RB combines yesterday and his tapes! Akers is the real deal along with CEH!

  25. Bucsfan951 Says:

I’m sure we can all agree with NPUPPY on this one

    Good job, Pup!

  26. Jim Says:

    Clyde-LSU…do it!

  27. Gettinthebucs Says:

Akers is just different. Played QB in highschool and I’m pretty sure he is a better athlete than Doug Martin.

  28. DRFEELGOOD Says:

What Swampbuc said. Also, wasn’t Jonathan Stewart alot bigger than Dobbins?

  29. DalvinCookRules Says:

Sorry, I rarely miss on draft prospects I’m familiar with, and Akers is a very poor man’s Dalvin Cook, at best. Anyone who thinks they are close simply does not know football.

  30. Bigblackdick Says:

Derrick Brooks the Deacon of defense.he got it right about Cam Akers he’s a multi dimensional running back. He can throw a decent pass too. He played behind an atrocious offensive line and still played exceptionally well. He’s going to make a lot of teams regret not drafting him hopefully one of those teams isn’t Tampa bay.
