Bucs Dig For A D-Tackle

April 25th, 2020

Sixth-round pick Khalil Davis.

With the 194th pick in the draft, the Bucs hope they can find a gold coin at a yard sale.

Former Nebraska offensive lineman Jason Licht decides to go back to Lincoln and draft a Nebraska defensive tackle, Khalil Davis.

Per Dane Brugler of The Athletic and his draft guide, Davis is his 21st ranked defensive lineman, so it seems the Bucs got some good value here.

Davis apparently played in a 34 defense at Nebraska and can play both end and tackle.

SUMMARY: A one-year starter at Nebraska, Davis played left defensive end in defensive coordinator Erik Chinander’s 3-4 base scheme, lining up inside and outside the right tackle. Along with his brother, the twins were eight-time letterwinners in Lincoln (four in football, four in track), becoming the first to accomplish that feat at Nebraska in over 50 years. Davis is at his best when he can show off his speed and flexibility, mirroring ball carriers and stringing out runs down the line of scrimmage. But his lack of length, block awareness and power through his hands keeps his hung up on blocks. Overall, Davis needs to develop his point of attack power and technique, but he is an ascending pass rusher and his persistence chasing the football gives him a shot to earn an NFL roster spot.

It seems Davis has a bit of a mean streak in him. He was suspended for a game last season for blasting Ohio State center Josh Myers to the ground and then getting into a wrestling match with him.

Here is something weird: In a draft dominated by SEC players, the Bucs have gone exclusively with Big Ten players. Yeah, running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn played for Vanderbilt, but his first two college seasons were at Illinois.

Still got two more picks today…

  2. FactTeller Says:

    Great value pick!!

    Next up G/C, and Edge/DE

I’ve been 100% calling our positions for this draft.

    Keep it going Jason

  3. Ivan The Insider Says:

Khalil Davis was the #1 DT IN THE DRAFT!

    Just kidding. 🙂

You never know how some of these late round prospects might turn out. Hell, Shaq was undrafted.

  4. Matt Says:

He brings more attitude and athleticism, he’ll fit right in. Great pick, I’m shocked he was still available.

  5. ©MadMax Says:

Great value, valued at 4-5th rd.

Need another DT though, and Raequan Williams is still there.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    So far…..all needs….

OT, S, RB, 3rd WR, DT depth

Good job…..we’ll see if the players are right later….

  7. TOM Says:

What a circus this draft turned out to be after the 1st rd. But what do you expect with clowns that do the drafting.

  8. SKBucsFan Says:

Licht should bring his twin brother in as F/A if he doesn’t get selected. Another quick DT that played with Nebraska as well.

  9. StonedBuc Says:

    Great depth peice

  10. BlogTalkFootball.com Says:

I wonder if the scouts that Jason has been listening to are in the North?

  11. Rod Munch Says:

ESPN finally got around to showing some player highlights and gave him a solid 60-seconds, that’s pretty impressive considering how they spend 90% of their time talking about dead parents and reminding you that you could die at any moment.

Anywho Kiper pointed out he had 8 sacks as a DT, that is very good. He’s not a Sapp type of quick twitch guy, beat you off the snap, but has good long speed – can chase people down. They said his twin brother is 322 pounds and ran a 4.8 – so hell, draft him too. It would be the Selmon brothers all over again, just the K-Mart Nebraska version.

Nice pick for the 6th round, it appears. I’m still not totally sold on Winfield in Round 2 when Dobbins and Akers were on the board. If the Vandy back turns out, then props to Licht. If he doesn’t, then he’s back to LichtMyBalls.

  13. Rod Munch Says:

Playing a music video during the NFL draft should be a war crime.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not a great idea to draft the twins unless you are sure you can keep both of them…….cut one and the other will be pi$$ed…..

  15. Owlykat Says:

So next up we need to draft Nate Stanley, QB, Iowa, to be mentored by Brady!

  16. Jcscycles Says:

Akers was already taken when we drafted.

  17. Bob Buc Says:

All his measurables point to him becoming an outstanding LG or RG. He only started one season at Nebraska at D line so begin the tranformation…presto/change-o!

  18. SOEbuc Says:

More great looking film and possible steal. 8 sacks sounds sexy. Good depth pick up with Nunez-Roaches

  19. Capt.Tim Says:

This guy is the first 300 pounder to run a sub 4.8 at the combine.
Good combination of speed and Power.
There are some great skills to work with here!
    Love todays picks!
Love this draft, only question mark is The Running back.
    Well done Jason Licht.

  20. Brandon Says:

6’1 308 lbs and ran a 4.75 at the Combine. Add that to his 8 sacks and this guy has a little potential.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

We are in the 7th round and ESPN is still doing G-D death dedications. Stop programming for women already, they’re not watching the 7th round of the NFL draft.

  22. ©MadMax Says:

    Yeah, it gets old Rod

  23. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

“I wonder if the scouts that Jason has been listening to are in the North?”

The motels are cheaper and the beer is colder up north.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

Only 19 more picks and the Bucs are up again!

  25. DaBux Says:

If he puts on another 15 lbs of muscle weight and LISTENS AND LEARNS from Mr. Suh and the coaches, he could become something special.

  26. Rod Munch Says:

Hey guys, I don’t know if you know this, but xxxx corp loves you, and cares about you, and thinks you’re the most important thing on earth. Also xxxx corp wants to remind you that you could die if you don’t take advantage of xxxx corp’s contactless offer. You don’t want to die, so why would you use yyyy corp? They obviously don’t care since they’re not running a commercial telling you how much they care. Why would you trust yyyy corp with the life of your children? Remember, stay safe, xxxx corp loves you, unlike yyyy corp.

  27. SOEbuc Says:

    Rod Munch

I let Joe take care of all the info after our first round pick. Hard enough waiting to #14 listening to Roger Goddell and the same COVID-19 commercial over and over.

  28. Nptbuc Says:

You are on the money Mr Munch! Do they really think women give a crap about these sad stories? Leave it for the local press when the guy gets drafted. The new town where he is playing is the the only audience that will care a lot about his personal story. This is football story time! Cut the crap at the expense of giving us our football fix!

  29. Rod Munch Says:

SOEbuc – There’s nothing else on, but ESPN is just awful. It’s, hey there is a pick, here’s 15-seconds on the player, here’s a death dedication and here’s 10 minutes of commercials where you find out there’s a plague going on and everyone cares about you, and remember, there’s a plague going on. Did you know there is a plague going on, if not here’s a commercial to remind you.

  30. Rod Munch Says:

Nptbuc – I know some people think Kiper is full of s— half the time, but he’s at least talking about the players, explaining what they do, talking size/speed, how he translates to the NFL.

Instead they give him 12 seconds to recap a player, then spend 60 seconds showing a lego version of the Cards headcoachs living room.

  31. View from 132 Says:

I’ll be honest here… haven’t watched Nebraska since they ran the option. But I wish him luck.

  32. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

LOL, Mel Kiper is “fast twitch”. Watch his head and face closely, after he answers a question. He twitches, fast.
It was quite funny when he was asked about a draft pick, and said “He is a fast twitch athlete”, then started his fast head twitching himself.

This kid does not give up on plays. Love the hustle from the little that you can see in this reel.
