Tom Brady = Older Jameis Winston

March 19th, 2020

“Damn, Jason. We just got the same guy.”

This ought to get people to squirm in their briefs.

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians loves to throw deep, right? Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, sure loved to throw deep, and was damn good at it.

And apparently, so too was Tom Brady.

Some numberscrunchers over at BSPN decided to study how well Jameis threw the deep ball compared to Brady. Well, it seems like those guys are virtual twins when it comes to tossing bombs-away passes.

They are one in the same when it comes to throwing into tight windows. Yeah, really. Joe has the numbers below.

    Let it go…

  2. NPRSageBoy. Says:

This just in: Tom Brady > JayMiss

In case you haven’t looked at his record, Brady wins; JayMiss, not some much.

In the immortal words of Don Henley: Let it go

    Peace, out

  3. Tye Says:

Looks like he is quickly becoming a ‘has been’ or ‘never was’!
No one is ever going to regret moving on… No other team wanted him either…
If things go south, fan will only want improvement, NOT the old mistake from the past…
    He is gone, No REGRETS!…

  4. Nptbuc Says:

So much for Brady not having an arm any longer! As long as you are into graphics how about throwing up a comparison of time from snap to release and interceptions between the two? Et that will make you โ€œsquirmโ€ even more๐Ÿ™‚

  5. DRFEELGOOD Says:

Same guy with only 8 picks last year. I have been a staunch Winston supporter and believe he would’ve had less INTs in his 2nd year in the system. But. Brady makes us immediate contenders IMO. He won’t cost us games. I expect to win the division next year. AND, having FAs calling wanting to join the Bucs wouldn’t be happening without TB12. GO BUCS!!

  6. JimmyJack Says:

We’ll look at who Tom was throwing to deep……Is there a chance his numbers get better with the weapons we have here? I say heck yes there a darn good chance.

And not that we need to. Like Joe said, Winston was very good at the deep ball this year. If Tom can match that it will be fine.

And don’t get fooled into thinking we going all short with a new playbook. Tom will take plenty of shots downfield……It’s probably a big reason he came here. He’s got the weapons to attack downfield more now. Probly something he’d love to get back to doing like he did with Moss years ago.

  7. Tampabuscsbro Says:

So how many games have the patriots lost in the last 5 years due to poor QB play.

Exactly I know the joes like to spin their narratives about their guy me entertainment who is entertaining for everyone else but Bucs fans.

  8. Kansas95Buc Says:

    @Joe you’re trolling aren’t you lol

  9. Joe Says:

Weโ€™ll look at who Tom was throwing to deep

    Good point.

  10. whats the bucs plan 2020 Says:

They are one in the same when it comes to throwing into tight windows. Yeah, really. Joe has the numbers below.

awesome … all that and less interceptions and pick 6 = more wins

  11. JimmyJack Says:

A big difference I think we will see is more underneath options. Tom can read a defense much better then Winston did. He will be quicker to decide where to go with the ball. That means you gotta have shallow options in case he don’t like the coverage he sees.

This is where a pass catching back becomes a vital addition. And I like the idea of getting 2. One free agent and draft another. We don’t only need a reliable RB for Tom we need quality depth behind them.

  12. RSJCheapSeats Says:

    JoeWinstonLover is really funny.

  13. Tom Edrington Says:

To make any comparison between the GOAT and Winston is an insult to anyone who got past the sixth grade…..

  14. BA4President Says:

Admit it Joe, Jameis is not a starting QB and it is because of Jameis.

You expect the Bucs to realize they need to upgrade at RB, but you can’t accept that Jameis was a mistake at QB. Pot calling the kettle black

  15. Dave Says:

With the 1st pick in the 2021 NFL Draft the Tampa Bay Yuccaneers select Treveor Lawerence, Clemson

  16. Mitch Says:

All I needed to hear was that Tampa lost seven games by one score last year and in those games Jamies had 18 turnovers. I donโ€™t think Tom Brady will do that. Automatic upgrade.

  17. Greg Says:

The difference is, Winston would throw the ball in the โ€œareaโ€ of the receiver the majority of his deep passes and leaned on Evans/Godwin/OJ/Brate to go get it (most times eliminating YAC). Brady on the other hand throws with purpose and precision. Just because the numbers are the same doesnโ€™t mean each player got there the same. Simply put, we hold our breathe when Winston throws and are confident when Brady throws.

  18. Jean Lafitte Says:

It may have some validity but Brady usually scores for one team.

Winston likes to score for both.

The biggest plus that Joe seems to miss is Brady’s ability to read defenses on the fly, and his ability to adjust to defensive weaknesses.

Winston is , damn the torpedoes, throw it anyway. He lacks the ability to counter a well defended play, and a reason why he was not trusted to deviate from the called play. Something that Brady is a master at.

  19. a-bomb Says:

Look, I think Winston is a generational arm talent. I still think he can and probably will become a really good QB in this league. But, if you are trading him out for even Brady at 80%, that is still a significant upgrade. And really, except for MVP types guys in their prime, like Mahommes, wouldn’t most of the teams in the league trade out their QB for Brady at 80% if they could?

  20. Buc50 Says:

No denying Jameis has talent. The kid can straight up ball but he gives the ball aways too.

  21. Ivan The Insider Says:

Now analyze the accuracy on THE OTHER 90% OF THROWS.

    Go ahead, we’ll wait.

  22. donuts Says:

To compare Winston to 3x NFL player of the year with 6 Super Bowl wins is a joke. Put your stat sheet away. We now have a QB that can actually read the DEF pre-snap. There is a BIG reason he is getting soft interest in FA. His bad behavior last year with Leftwich was a major red flag in NFL circles.

  23. Marine Buc Says:

Actually Tom Brady is the anti Winston. Winston is a clueless river boat gambler with a cannon arm. To Brady is a calculated CEO with a more accurate but less potent arm.

  24. Red Skeleton Says:

The problem is that most of the bad picks from America’s former quarterback were short to medium passes. It always seemed like all or nothing.

  25. Marine Buc Says:

    *Tom Brady

  26. ModHairKen Says:

Which season was it that Brady threw 30 picks?

  27. RGD12 Says:

Get the feeling Joe would like too see Brady change his mind and not come here. Even if that were to happen, which it won’t, Bucs have made their minds up, they are done with America’s turnover machine, just not a winner period. BTW, Brady taking physical today, announcement coming later today.

  28. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

NFL has bad throw % numbers also and Brady graded at 2nd worst in the league at 20.6% bad throws , not to mention 29th in completion percentage. We are getting a washed up soon to be 43 year old that will get Jason Licht fired , so we have that going for us.

  29. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Not quite the same…..

TB had 179 career interceptions in 20 years

    Jameis had 88 in 5 years….projected to 20 that would be 352

  30. Jean Lafitte Says:

Joe you act like every BA play call is a 30 yard pass. Did it ever occur to you that maybe it was the deep 50/50 ball that BA and Leftwich only trusted Jameis to throw? Because check the stats, most of his INT’s came on short to intermediate passes..

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The most interceptions Brady ever had in a year was 14……

  32. Cobraboy Says:

    He’s gone.

    It’s over.

    Rearview mirror.

    Yesterday’s news.

    Let it go.

    Embrace the GOAT.

We will no longer have to watch dumba$$ quarterbacking again.

  33. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Keep sipping the Brady Kool Aid and when it all goes south , which it will , just remember who told you so sonny.

  34. ATrain Says:

    But one had 30 INTs

And almost as many pick 6s as the other had INT

I know yโ€™all donโ€™t like to talk about the INT

But it is everything in the NFL

i.e. Thatโ€™s why one agent got his client a 30 million dollar contract
And the other Agent is stalking GMs on the phone trying to get a contract

Hey Bet Jamies doesnโ€™t get anything better than 13 million next year

  35. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

This is clearly the dumb, pot-stirring, PT Barnum Joe.

  36. TDTB Says:

Brady is the better choice for sure, but curious what happens at 25 yds and 30 yds. Do they still look the same?

  37. Mike Johnson Says:

I am the voice of dissension here. I”m glad Joe allows alternate opinions. This is going to go down as one of the worst decisions ever made in Buc History. Be elated now but you will be crying during the season when the old man goes down. And go down he will. You’d better have an outstanding line for our..Statue of Liberty. This is all about Arians trying desperately to win a superbowl before he retires. It ain’t about the Bucs. 43 yrs old does not equal 35 or even 38.This does not end well for us or Brady. Don’t worry..I’ll be here to remind all of you..Mike Johnson told you so.

  38. SwampFox Says:

Chum churning, reading time wasting Joe is at it again. STOP!

  39. Bird Says:

    Im speechless

No question which joe wrote this one
    ๐Ÿ˜‚

Hang in there joe. We only have the GOAT coming and some real hope coming with filled out stadiums . The test of the country actually talking about the bucs.

    Gosh that sounds so horrible

  40. Bird Says:

    Rest of the country ^^^

  41. Jeagan1999 Says:

Great! The guy can throw deep AND he’s thrown fewer INT’s in his last $ YEARS than James did in 2019!!

    Win-Win!!!!!

  42. Chris Says:

Misleading. How many resulted in INTs.

  43. Matt Says:

Brady has so many weapons he may set a record next year. Expect me.13mln and CGs numbers to decline slightly and the TEs and whatever RB we have to pick up. Expect Donovan Smith to come to camp in shape and a mean streak. Expect 6-8 crafty veterans coming to play on bargain deals and for us to be a super stacked team. What if… what if Antonio Brown is our 3rd WR?!

AB needs to have a coach like Arians to keep it real with him and cuss him out and be like wth are you thinking man?!

  44. Matt Says:

Iโ€™ll bet Brady hand picks a 4th-5th round pick QB to groom and he takes him under his wing and passes the team off to him and stays around the club as an ambassador and falls in love with the red headed stepchild TB Buccaneers.

    Nate Stanley…….

  45. Dewey Selmon Says:

You just compared the GOAT to a Qb who couldn’t secure a second contract. One is a to hyped, big eyed, finger licking good throw up jump balls to a cold, calculated assassin who has won as many SB’s as the franchise he just signed with has playoff win in 43 years.

  46. gotbbucs Says:

If this isn’t a “troll” article I don’t know what is. If this is truly what “interests” Joe then just shut the site down already.

Brady and Winston are both right handed, that makes them identical twins, right?
Hall of fame QB’s threw interceptions back in the 70’s and 80’s, that makes Winston a hall of famer, right?

  47. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

The article is meant to be click bait , but it serves a meaningful dual purpose , hits for the website and banter among supporters and detractors for and against Tom Brady. So freaking leave the Joe alone.

  48. SC Bucs Fan Says:

All they have in common is they play QB.

  49. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Don’t worry Joe is just waiting till it is officials before he transfers, “Mr. Entertainment, Americaโ€™s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston” to Brady.

  50. dylan160w Says:

What a pointless article written, Joe. Give it up Jameis wasnโ€™t the answer

  51. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

The answer is a REAL GM that is smart enough to not draft BUM KICKERS.
The answer is not having the most over paid Oline in the LEAGUE.
The answer is not having owners that fire the best coach we ever HAD.

  52. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Even if you consider Winston a backup…he’s currently the best backup on the market.

  53. Bucs Guy Says:

Irrelevant. I saw a stat on BSPN that said Jameis and Tom are exactly the same in that they both put their pants on one leg at a time also.

  54. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Me thinks Jaymiss’s agent is giving him some REAL bad advice.

  55. BrianBucs Says:

    Joe

Let it go. You are sounding like a spoiled 4 year old girl who didn’t get her way. Let it go.
Winston failed here and now he’s gone.
Focus on the good and exciting things that are happening here.
Maybe some therapy is in order when you start comparing the failure Winston to the 6 time Superbowl winner and future Hall Of Famer Brady.
Where is Rachel Watson when Joe needs her?

Can we just stop with comparing Jameis to anybody else. If Brady throws 10 picks thru his 1st 4games are we going to compare him to Carson Palmer thru 4 games orjust say he sucks? We will say he sucks rather than the stupid comparison game.

The GOAT wins almost 8 out of 10 games (77% winning record)
    Most post season wins
How many super bowls? Break out two hands

But yeah …he is an older jameis
    This article is absolutely insane

  63. Adrnagy Says:

Regardless of the comparison, Brady is the best. And letโ€™s hope that next year is not his injury one. He has Played consistent for years. I hope the oline steps up.

I would hate to hear the bucs ended Bradyโ€™s career.

  64. jmarkbuc Says:

    Geez Joe….

  65. Petty Officer Buc Says:

    ??

  66. JimmyJack Says:

Wow some of y’all are really dense. The reason for this comparison is the narritive that with Winston leaving we will lose our deep ball passing. Some say Brady can’t throw it deep no more. This comparison attempts to disprove that.

Y’all are lashing out cause your still mad at Winston. Get freaking over it. It’s time to move on.

We are getting a new QB. I for one want to know how in stack up in specific areas compared to the last guys. It gives us a better understanding of who he is and what we are getting and what to expect.

But y’all see a picture of Winston and go into blind rage. Grow up!!

  67. Robert Says:

    yeah, really….pfttt…Ndog wrote this!

  68. McBuc Says:

Some of you guys lack in reading comprehension. This is not a probWinston article, it is a pro Brady article. Everyone says Brady does not have the big arm and thrives in short and intermediate passing. This is proving that wrong.

  69. Ed Says:

All of this talk, they better win now, because we have no excuses.

  70. JimmyJack Says:

McBuc……At least one other person gets it.

Wow how do you like that? A free thinking Bucs fan…….Somebody that doesn’t come unglued at the seams and go into a tizzied rage at the mere mention of Winston.

The comments here are ridiculous……..Very curious to see if this types of behavior gets better with time.

I think I might understand this derangement symptom thing now that Winston’s gone.

  71. D-Rome Says:

Mr. Unemployed, America’s Draft Bust, Jay-Miss WinsTOn.

  72. Craig Says:

Since you brought it up. Brady has never, in a single season, thrown more than 14 interceptions. He had a year with 50 touchdowns and three with 36.

Those are sites Jameis will never attain. Every year has been above Brady’s bad years, as far as interceptions go.

Time to let it rest and see what next season can be.

  73. Giovanni Gonzalez Says:

The difference is Brady didn’t have talent around him and Jamies did.

  74. 813bucboi Says:

    2018 stats please….

  75. Tony1775 Says:

    Who signed Jameis?

  76. stpetebucsfan Says:

    JJ

I also get it and totally support your last post You are right.

BTW Brian Baldinger put up video illustrating your point about WR’s being the weak link in the Pat offense. Once Gordon went down they had no real deep threat.

  77. lambchop Says:

Those numbers are dumb if you realize Tom Brady had nobody apart from Edelman to throw to. And Edelman is a Z/Slot WR. He’s not going for the 20+ yard catches most of the time. These numbers would be more in favor of Brady had AB stuck with the team.

Tom Brady is going to ball out with our offense if we address OL and RB.

  78. D1 Says:

    St pete,

Before JC. went down , wk 5 or 6, Brady was 1st in deep ball completions.
As you said, last Yr TB had the worst receiver group in the history of the world.

  79. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

  87. lambchop Says:

    @Tampa Bay Demon,

I’m sure most of us get the point of the article. But, some of us are arguing that Brady’s numbers would have been even better with more weapons.

I don’t understand those people who think Tom can’t throw deep (deep means 15 yards+) and that he can’t throw lasers. I’ve seen him throw lasers but he also anticipates his WRs routes and throws early and in stride. You don’t need to throw lasers when you have the timing down with your offense and you can read defenses.

Tom is going to flourish if we build the offense around him and play to his strengths.

We have to get OL help and a RB who can catch screens consistently. I hope Tom gets 2 TE sets implemented and gets both TEs involved in the offense, because this is going to be a scary offense if he insists on a TE friendly offense.

    @lambchop,

Right there with ya, brother! – I kind of felt that people were taking the article in a way it was not intended.

I think the whole point was as you say, the thought that Brady can no longer go deep or throws lasers….. is wrong.

    He can… and he will.

  93. John Says:

If I were Brady I would be agast with someone comparing me to Winston – especially with Mr. Entertainment (s) off the field episode-ssssss…….. Comparing Brady to Winston is as off the wall as what Michael Irvine just did to Deshawn Watson…….. Simply TASTELESS!!!

  94. SteelStudBuc Says:

    Crazy Joe…

You know what TB and JW werenโ€™t tied for first in? Turnovers Joe, Jameis holds that crown. We supported him through and through, but anyone that understands the basic fundamentals of football knows that we would have been in many more games without picks/pick 6s/fumbles… lets face the facts. 32-30 to 24-8 …. Iโ€™ll take the second all day for my team if Iโ€™m the coach. Period.

  101. catcard202 Says:

We all get to see what TB12 does with the basically the same core of play-makers….Let’s see what the FO bought, that was worth hiking ticket prices in the face of coronavirus pandemic & probable recession.

  102. REDZONE BA Fan Says:

Happy to watch Brady results with Bucs excellent WR’s.

I expect Tom will overcome O-line issues with his quick release, for first few games. (WINS). In time -opposing D’s will figure out Bucs game-plan/s. And wins will be more challenging, even with Tom Terrific.

Tom Terrific will be challenged – even w/his quick release — to find open receivers, in BA “Risk-it-Biscuit” offense” for long ‘Dig” passes. BA/BL will need to adjust for Tom, for shorter timed-passes/DIGs… to Godwin & ME13. I expect adjustments….

Expectations are that ME13/Godwin will gain crazy YACS and more yards than in 2019, per Tom’s accuracy. And more WINS! (PS -BOTH had 1000 yrds at game 11 n 2019) Hmm.

Tom Terrific has to be prepared for opponent Defensive RUSH….Throw ball away. Concede 4th down. (JW never got this concept)

JW issues – JW took STUPID chances to extend plays and downs. = INT’S.

NET: Tom has amazing opportunity to make TB Bucs relevant and winner.

JW ‘F-upped’ every oppy afforded to him, to be Tampa Region icon. Missed opportunity for JW — On and OFF field. BIG MISS!

JW is getting married to his lifelong partner/GF next week. JW is Crazy about his kid. Again, such a MISSED oppy for JW in Tampa. Maybe JW will finally realize that his talent does not preclude how he is perceived. And impact!

Tommy has already ELEVATED everything about the BUCs… just his reputation,

Bring it on, Tommy! We got your back! Super Bowl or bust!

  103. Buczilla Says:

  107. Oneilbucs Says:
