The Todd Gurley Rumblings & Rumors

March 19th, 2020

Todd Gurley

Joe has gotten texts and emails for days about Todd Gurley being made available for the Rams in a trade and the Bucs’ likely interest. Joe has seen online rumors, too.

So why has Joe not written about it until now?

It’s because Joe is very leery of 25-year-old Gurley’s somewhat mysterious injury history and his price. He wasn’t the same superstar guy last season. And with knee issues and about 1,500 NFL touches under his belt, Joe is squeamish about investing much in Gurley.

That written, Gurley represents a major upgrade to the Buccaneers’ backfield.

The Los Angeles Times penned a story this morning about Gurley’s shaky status with the Rams and his massive contract. The Rams might cut him by the end of the week, and that would make things a lot more desirable and interesting for the Bucs.

For now, Peyton Barber remains an unsigned and unrestricted free agent.

Damaged goods at a high price. Is #14 too high to take Taylor or Swift? If we wait until rd2 we might miss out. Akers in rd 2 or 3?

  2. Marine Buc Says:

Why in the world would we want an overpriced RB with two arthritic knees? This dude was damaged goods coming out of college? If we sign Gurley it better be one hell of a giant discount. The dude walks with a limp for goodness sake!!!

  3. Bucsfanman Says:

I’m “meh” on Gurley. Too much capital for a RB with issues when we can draft a guy with less wear and tear on the cheap.

  4. 813bucboi Says:

    no thanks….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  5. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Dewey

Unless we sign Trent Williams we desperately need an OT. But we could possibly move back up into the late first round and draft Dobbins, Hellaire or possibly Taylor if he falls.

  6. Buddhaboy19 Says:

That is not Gurley in the Picture Joe

  7. DoooshLaRue Says:

    OL 1st
    QB/RB 2nd
    S/DL 3rd

  8. Bucsfan951 Says:

NOPE NOPE NOPE! I’d rather have the poor mans gurley with Gordon. Won’t have to pay as much and give them a draft pick.

  9. pick6 Says:

need the next awesome RB, not chase the empty shells of recently awesome RBs. Draft or churn through other people’s backups. Look at the dudes chasing Gurley, Melvin Gordon, and David Johnson off their current rosters…they are not pricey vets, they are guys on rookie and prove-it deals

  10. Buc You Says:

Go get Leonard Fournette for a 3rd and 6th instead. Cheaper and better at this point.

  11. Donkc Says:

Third post on this. Get in on Jags fire sale. Leonard Fournette for a 4th, 4th and 5th, heck maybe two 4ths. Gurley has flat tires and now runs like a girl.

  12. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

O.T. should be the biggest concern to protect Brady and give Jones a hole.

  13. Robert Says:

I like our RB depth. Dare is shifty as hell, Rojo is coming on and Barber is a lunchpail guy. I think RB is a low priority and the performance was simply a byproduct of jw.

  14. Alstott up the gut Says:

Under current situation with an inability to test him out, I say pass. I know we really can’t test anyone right now, but why start with a guy that has a peculiar NFL resume so far. Many better options currently out there.

  15. pick6 Says:

fournette has to be the most overrated RB in football presently. all the other overrated guys are at least discussed with caution. how many good games has he had since his first month as a pro?

  16. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Alstott

Good point. A RB with two bad knees that you can’t have team doctors check out? No thank you.

  17. Buddhaboy19 Says:

Living in Jax, leonard fuernette is not a good running back. He takes more negative rushing plays than anyone in the league, and he doesn not create his own yards. The hole has to be large and he has zero moves in the hole , is not a good catching back, and sucks at blocking.

    HARD PASS

  18. boldnewera Says:

    🙂 🙂

  19. Cgmaster27 Says:

@robert our runninggame was a by product of Jw? My goodness ,your foolishness knows no bounds. So when the runningbacks were getting hit in the backfield, jw shouldve been blocking? When a 50 yard rojo run gets called back because of another dotson holding call, that was on jw? Your jameis delusion syndrom will keep you talking about him long after hes gone. He lives in your head rent free. Move on dude, hes not on our team anymore. But again, youre also the “genius” who thinks we should trade Mike Evans.

  20. boldnewera Says:

“So why …not written about it until now?”…

Just yesterday in the “seven or eight primetime games” thread, there was an explanation saying “because no one credible has it yet”. Nothing about his “injury history”.

When it was clearly shown that many credible sources had this yesterday and today…now it’s injury history.

$4.65 million only, in trade, for 2020. Zero guaranteed cash beyond 2020.

  21. killfish86 Says:

Gurley would be an amazing addition to the team. Anyone that followed him last year knows that the Rams used him sparingly…and missed out on the playoffs because of it. Goff was also not the same, which affected his numbers. He would be a drastic improvement over what we have. So long as the price is right, I would have no problem with trading for him.

  22. Cobraboy Says:

Waaaaay too much cheese…a $17mil. cap whack.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This is so not like Jason Licht……..big money/RB…….no thanks…..let’s just draft one or maybe one will come to us on the cheap.

  24. Tvan101 Says:

    I’ll take Melvin

  25. Mister Positive Pete Says:

If the Bucs could find today’s equivalent of LeGarrette Blount, that’s all they really need with TB. It doesn’t have to be a superstar running back, just a decent one.

  26. 541BucsFan Says:

A good RB will be there for us in the 2nd, possibly later.

  27. boldnewera Says:

It appears many, many here have reading comprehension issues.

And trouble using Over The Cap, the website…properly.

    Lord help ya.

  28. Old Sombrero Kid Says:

Give up the second round pick for Kareem hunt. Proven

  29. MarineBucsFan Says:

Dion Lewis way cheaper, pair him with an emerging and motivated Rojo!!!

  30. The Coroner Says:

Bad knees. Unless he is going to run and cut doing handstands.

  31. The Coroner Says:

    In Jason we trust 🤣

  32. TOM Says:

Quit with the Gurley talk. Rb in draft. Spend on OL. Top priority.

  33. ItzOK Says:

Itz a Hard no on Gurley. Injuries and his salary is 17MM for 2020 cap hit? he is washed up. draft a running back in second or third round or find a veteran with less tread on the tires

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Cobra

As usual agree with your take. Although someone posted here that if he’s cut LA has to eat the vast majority of that leaving us with something more like 5 million.

That would still be too much for me because I agree that Gurley is damaged goods and he’s too used to being the “star”. I want someone a little more motivated.

And so FSU guys many of whom loathe me because of my JW positions…here’s a place where hopefully we can make peace! LOL

Cam Akers! Certainly worth a third and maybe even a second if we’re afraid he won’t drop that far. I think Akers would be the perfect fit and he’s a star athlete who through no fault of his own has had to endure a rough two years teamwise.

Can you imagine how starved Akers is for dependable QB play. Having TB12 tossing him the ball could help his career blowup as a rookie. ROJO could be spotted to reduce wear and tear and offer a little different look.

A new stud RT and Akers and IMO that frees up the entire draft and FA quest for other needs and depth. And again…despite the Licht hate here he has done an EXCELLENT job of finding UDFA’s…let’s hope he has another great year.

  35. BrooksvilleDWB2019 Says:

Can we please put to rest the name Peyton Barber? Tired of hearing about his heart and how he plays hard. He is not even average. May get an offer for someone as camp fodder.

  36. Bucs Guy Says:

No Gs – Gurley or Gordon. We don’t have the money and don’t need them. Get a pounding RB in the 4th or 5th round – AJ Dillon or Patrick Taylor, Jr. Less expensive, younger and less injuries. Also pick up an inexpensive role playing RB for $1-3M on a prove it deal.

The Bucs don’t need a RB in the 2nd round. You need a DT or DE in the 2nd round after going OT in the 1st.

  37. Bucsgotachance..todonothing Says:

3rd or 4th rd for leonard fournette..him paired with jones would be a nice tandem for a play action offense

  38. GreG Says:

Lmao that’s not A picture of Todd Gurley

  39. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Since Duval is selling the farm.
How about making them an offer they can’t refuse for …..

    Leonard Fournette

  40. Admiral Redbeard Says:

OT in the 1st, Jalen Hurts in the 2nd. RoJo averaged 4.2 ypc last year only getting the ball about 10 x per game. He needs to improve in passpro, which he is bulking up to do, but he also needs to get the ball 20+ times per game. The more he’s in there, the better he’ll get at passpro, and his ypc should also increase. Pick up a rb in the 3rd.

  41. boldnewera Says:

RELEASED!! Guess Licht called their bluff, cause future guaranteed couldn’t kick in at 4pm today…

    He’ll have his choice.

Melvin just got a lot cheaper.

  42. 813bucboi Says:

    LUV

since they’re selling the farm, how about sending them a 4th for

cam robinson or jawaan taylor….they’re young and we need a RT…..

    GO BUCS!!!!

  43. CalBucsFan Says:

No way, I’ve seen most of the Rams games since Gurley’s been here in SoCal. He’s done, I would try to talk Mike Alstott out of retirement first.

After settings aside enough cap $ to cover salaries for Shaq and Suh, Bucs need to focus on bring in veteran OLmen and a safety in the free agent. This year’s draft has a lot of quality RBs and WRs, so I would take the best on the board in both positions when picking in the first and second round.

I would absolutely take QB Fromm in the 3rd to learn behind Brady, if he’s still available. That kid is football smart and very accurate, he’s a clone of Brees and at sometime will be a starter in the NFL for many years. Why not have him learn from the GOAT and step in 2-3 years?

  44. boldnewera Says:

Funny thing about eventually, or ever, going out in public…

    IS…

  45. King C Says:

    Nope
We don’t want Fournette or Gordon either
    Hello Dion Lewis

  46. James Walker Says:

The threat of Gurly may be more effective than his execution on the field.

  47. Hethrew 30 Says:

Um, there is a very good chance Brady calls for Lewis. He’s not young so he’d be cheap, but he can catch and block…Hmmmmmm.

  48. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

The Bucs just landed an aging future first ballot HoF QB who needs to be protected. I’d rather see the cap resources Gurley would eat up used on quality O-line FA’s that can protect him as well as help open holes for our current RB’s (and any we may add in the draft and/or on the cheap in FA).
