Projecting Chiefs At Bucs On Opening Night

March 29th, 2020

“Jason, put the power bill on auto-pay. We’re going to need the lights on.”

As Joe wrote before Tom Brady was signed, a Brady acquisition would equal five night games.

Fresh speculation from a national outlet thinks the bright lights will find Tampa on the NFL opening night.

Traditionally, the NFL kicks its season off on a Thursday night with a game featuring the Super Bowl champion.

That’s the Chiefs, of course, and they have a date with the Bucs in Tampa this season.

The Associated Press played crystal ball with the schedule and noted the Patrick Mahomes-Brady matchup is tailor made for the choice, which is made by TV Network executives.

The easiest choice to oppose Kansas City during the Sept. 10 kickoff game would be New England because it would be the Patriots’ first game without Tom Brady since early in 2001. But three of the last seven opening games have been playoff rematches. If that trend continues it could be Houston.

Man, Joe sure hopes the Bucs are selected for opening night.

First, that means Joe gets to spend all day Sunday watching football, glorious football — with a Burger Monger feast and Big Storm beer!

Second, Bucs fans will get a serious and fast education on whether the Bucs actually have a No. 1 cornerback on the roster. So far, the powers that be appear ready to gift the three key cornerback gigs to Jamel Dean, Carlton Davis and Sean Murphy-Bunting, sans competition.

Lastly, what an amazing scene it would be, with the nation and the entire Tampa Bay area fixated on the Den of Depression. Joe wonders what Brady says in the locker room during a lightning delay?

  1. Bobbo Says:

Here’s hoping for many night games early. Brady can’t be used to the Tampa afternoon weather

  2. Alexander Nascimento Says:

Traditionally don’t the champion plays at home when starting a season?
    (Except the Bucs, of course)

  3. stpetebucsfan Says:

This is NOT a good thing for the Bucs. Take on a polished SB Champ with minimal preparation and the best QB in the league.

Brady in his prime…on a team he had played with for at least a couple of years.

We will not start this season as a playoff caliber team…yet…but like many good teams before us we’ll get better as the season progresses IF we are truly good.

I’d rather have a real test against Mahomes when we have a chance to get our spit together…at least a few games to bond and become a real team.

  4. 941bucsfan Says:

Yea some bucs fans automatically think we are ready for mahomes. I dont know why. I just rewatched the last game of the year, and watch matty ice drive all the way down the field to tie the game up. I have no faith in this secondary

  5. Gofortheface30 Says:

If you’re prone to respiratory issues, if you have other medical conditions because youre…i dunno, fat and out of shape, if you’re over 65, stay home. Otherwise, don’t be a little beta and let a virus that causes no symptoms in most real healthy people keep you from the game. Oh no 100 new people died today. Over million people die per year from car accidents, now extrapolate out to what that is daily. Welp…time to cancel cars now too. *Eyeroll.* They day you can’t put a value you on life, well….protecting the future of society from going in to a depression which will lead to chaos, poverty, crime, war is much much much more important than a few thousand people dying from a virus. You know, just like how thousands die on the daily with other infectious diseases. We WILL have a football season you ninnies

  6. firethecannons Says:

Brady says during the lightning delay:
“Look Donovan – if you take even one more play off, I’ll have your ass on the bench so fast you won’t believe it, even while its happening.”
    Brady has the reigns

  7. Jean Lafitte Says:

I hope we open with a vanilla game so we can count on starting 1 – 0. I’d rather face KC when we’re 4-0

  8. pick6 Says:

Chiefs will open at home like every super bowl champ not named the buccaneers

  9. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Am I the only one confused by this article? Nowhere does it mention in the piece Joe quotes that the Chiefs would play the Bucs. It says they’d play the Patriots (first game without Brady) or Houston. Reading is good. Joe pulled the quote into Joe’s piece. It’s there. Play nice. Confused? The schedule isn’t out yet and isn’t due for three weeks. Most would realize that it’s speculation. –Joe

  10. Buczilla Says:

    Sounds good to me.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I looked at the Chiefs schedule…..there are no home playoff opponents other than NE & Houstion…..I suspect the NFL could make a SB home team opener and feature the Chiefs at Bucs.

When you look at their schedule that game looks the most intriguing.

  12. BUC55 Says:

This is an uninformed take since super bowl champs ALWAYS HOST opening night.
Maybe do some research next time. You’re right. The NFL never changes anything.–Joe

  13. Hethrew 30 Says:

OMG, look at all these articles. Tom Brady this, Brady that. What the eff is going on here? Is this really all about Tom Brady?

He11 yeah. He’s the GOAT and he is the Bucs QB! This may be the single best (and maybe only good) thing going on in Tampa Bay right now.

Thanks Joe, for doing your part giving us something to look forward to around here with all the other bad news going on.

  14. Stanglassman Says:

Gofortheface is just going to get people killed by spouting off Irresponsible lies. Please do not listen to anything he says. He and like minded people will make this bad situation worse. BTW 32k die from car accidents annually in the US and lawmakers and manufacturers have been taking action to reduce that number. It has been on a decline do to seatbelt, tough drunk driving laws, airbags anti lock breaks etc. So according to his logic we should just stop all those measures too.

There is a reason why .72 percent of the people in Germany and over 10% in Italy are dying once they contract C-19. Do your research and understand why.

Healthy people are dying. Even if you are healthy and asymptomatic you can still spread the virus and kill others needlessly.

Between 160 million and 214 million people in the United States could be infected over the course of the epidemic, according to a projection that encompasses the range of the four scenarios. That could last months or even over a year, with infections concentrated in shorter periods, staggered across time in different communities, experts said. As many as 200,000 to 1.7 million The best estimates are that .1 to .35 people who get this virus will die.

The US blew its chance in January to early March by not doing wide spread testing and being prepared. Unfortunately many will die but much less will happen if you’ll take this pandemic seriously and shelter in place.

  15. Go Bucs 72 Says:

Bucc 55, the Bucs opened on the road in Philadelphia after we won the Super Bowl. Maybe YOU should do some research.

  16. Sappattack Says:

Bucs will open at the Raiders in Las Vegas for MNF week 1. Book it!

  17. Stanglassman Says:

Joe- leaving Gofortheface’s pandemic lies up on your board is going to get people killed. Either take it down or post my corrections.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Agree with StPete on this one … this would not necessarily be a good thing for the Bucs. Just about every major college team opens with a fluff game to start the season. Macho games are nice, but there’s a lot to said for fluff games also to open the season.

I’m going to assume that the Chiefs won’t be too much different this year than last year. They started off 2019 with 4 straight wins, but mostly against meh teams (Jags, Raiders, Lions but also the Ravens). THEN they hit a slump … lost 4 of the next 6 games … and were only 6-4 after 10 games. But THEN they ran the table … 6 straight regular season victories plus their 3 playoff wins.

Interestingly, their DEFENSE made the big difference (they finished #7 in Points Allowed). But in those last 6 games, they only allowed 69 total points (11.5 PPG), after allowing 24 PPG in the first 10 games. Their pass defense was very good all year (#8 in Passing Yards Allowed & Passing TDs Allowed), but their run defense was circumspect (#26 in Rushing Yards Allowed & #17 in Rushing TDs Allowed). And yet in those last 6 games their run defense improved a BUNCH for some reason. Maybe they could smell the playoffs?

  19. Noles Says:

    Lol. Go Bucs 72…

We closed the Old Vetbon way to SB & opened their new dump the following year..

That Colts game we blew that year just derailed that season…. I still cannot believe they lost that game

  20. Noles Says:

I agree w Joe, I would like to see a vet CB or S added to roster if possible. Dean is very injury prone & if one of them go down we are in trouble.

They may actually draft another CB or S pretty high if right player is available if they don’t add in FA. It’s a passing league

  21. james west Says:

i think the harder opponents. will come later in the season, if there is a season, due to the fact the NFL will want to have playoff ramifications involved, might start out with some easy wins to build on

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    I agree with stpetebucsfan.

If I had my choice, I prefer to open the season with 2 away games.

An early game would be better.

By the 3rd week, there is less chance of a hurricane, but playing a home opener at prime time would be nice. Two games in, Brady should have the offense rolling. Against the Panthers would be nice, because I really want to slap Bridgewater down to quiet the whiners.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Since the schedule is automated by computer, I fully expect to get screwed as usual. I suspect our prime time games will be flexed ones.

  24. Gofortheface30 Says:

Stanglassman, here’s some more “lies” for you: 1.4 billion people had H1N1. 575,000 people died. Did the world close down? I’ll answer that for you – no. But oh my god HOW DID WE SURVIVE. I’ll bet you $1000 that covid will not hit anywhere close to those numbers. Here’s another “lie” for you guy: 1.8 million last year died from diarreah. More people will die this year from taking a dump. Go back to watching CNN you alarmist or go dig a hole and jump in it. Wanna stop the spread? Fine – quarantine garbage New York and New Yorkers coming down here 😘

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Do we play the Rams? They’re going to suck this year. They lost half their team, and don’t have a first round pick until 2022.

An easy game is best that first game. With reduced padded practices, reduced preseason, thefirst game is now a warmup game.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Gofortheface30, it is thinking like that which is enabling this virus to spread. Stop reading facebook and twitter stories.

How many police and medical personnel die from those things in the United States? None. Because there are treatments.

COVID-19, even if detected, has no cure, no real treatment. All they can do is hope the symptoms can be minimized. Heck, people with diarrhea don’t need ventilators to live.

The virus isn’t manmade. Just as the flu isn’t.

Italy has over 10000 cases. We’re approaching that.

Not taking this thing seriously is the reason it is out of control. And it isn’t just about the deaths. While some infected seem to recover quickly, others who seem to live healthy lifestyles suffer badly.

  27. Pok Says:

You are a fool gofortheface. You misunderstand many things, and a football site is not the place to educate you. It is likely your ears and mind are so closed it would be a lost effort but I will give you one opportunity to broaden your mind. Hospitals get overrun by the scale of severe illness. First Italy, now NY and Spain, next New Orleans? Atlanta? Can Tampa flatten the curve before it’s too late? I hope so. Now-when there is no more room in the hospital, what happens to people with the rest of the injuries and illness and heart attacks who need care? ICU is full, surgeries are cancelled, doctors are out sick. Survivable things may not be survived when there are not resources. That is not on the daily virus specific death toll tracker, but do not assume that means these aren’t the consequences of the collapse of healthcare infrastructure.

Yes I am a doctor and yes I work in a hospital. And yes, I would still try to save your life no matter what, even if you spouted the arrogance of ignorance for weeks before you get ill, look death in the face, and beg for someone to help you with fear and understanding finally registering in your eyes. I have seen that face many times over the years for many conditions, I doubt you have. So listen more, spout off less.

And Joe- thank you for the football- TBxTB is my respite during these dark days and I read all of your coverage. Our D line remains nasty and I am so excited to see what the season brings.

    Stay safe

  28. TheBradyBunch Says:

Damn goforthrface your state run media called it a hoax when your king was shrugging off the virus. Now that your king has decided it’s a big deal the state run media has jumped in lockstep with him. Such a shame when clowns refer to real news as fake and trust only fox who is by the worst source for news there is.

  29. FortMyersDave Says:

Bonzai: yep Bucs get the Lambs and the Giants for finishing 3rd in division like those teams as opposed to the ATL getting Dallas and Seattle so that 0-4 Gay FG, Jameis game ending book end pick 6, OT loss to the dirty birds did give the Bucs a slightly easier schedule if one is to believe that the G Men will be below average again and the Rams regress. Bucs-Giants could be a night game for sure and the Rams Bucs could be a 4:15 game with national coverage given that last year the 2 teams put up 95……. Stay safe and sound Buc fans!

  30. TheBradyBunch Says:

Gofortheface – morons like you are the problem. Listen to the experts rather than you know who’s twitter feed and Fox.

  31. Buccan8 Says:

Defending champs on the road Opening Weekend? Is that becoming more accepted? I remember how disrespected the ‘03 Bucs felt having to open up the Linc—and all that Rocky hoopla—as the defending champs.

I, however, enjoyed the 17-0 whoopin’ we put on them, injuries notwithstanding.

  32. jb Says:

Nice to see there are more intelligent fans here than Gofortheface30! He simply shows how easy it is to promote the idiocy of that fellow giving daily press briefings at the White House, all the while patting himself on the back and spreading lies while the REAL experts stand behind him rolling their eyes and stifling giggles wondering how this moron ever got elected.

  33. Hethrew 30 Says:

I think GofortheFace makes some good points. That is, you can’t stop the world because of disease; you can’t shut it down totally to save lives. However, where he shows his stupidity at unbelievable levels is dismissing the problem as for people who are over 65 or with conditions from being fat. As if to say, so what, stay at home, while all others go to games and act like nothing is happening. Whether the mortality rate is high, like 4.5% the WHO predicts, or as low at .1%, the facts there are no vaccine and this is more contagious than a common flu virus, it will overwhelm the medical systems as already seen. As it devastates the health care worker numbers who are taken out of the mix temporily (for quarantine) or permanently, it has ripple effect on other medical care, with ripples into other industries because of real need to contain the spread. This is what IntheFace doesn’t understand. I’d hope guys like him are at least being considerate of the fact he can spread it to others. He sounds like the NYC mayor and public health adminstrator who in early March said take the subway, go to show, your favorite restaurant, live your lives. Risk is low, etc. They would probably like to have those words back. Had NYC done what they are doing now a little earlier, it would probably not be as bad a situation locally.

The bottom line is the medical experts who say “shut it all down or people die” do not have supreme rule. And no one, including the admisistration, is saying let’s just back to normal by Easter and act like nothing is happening. Stop listening to the politics behind it and listen to what the government officials themselves are saying, emegency managment, medical, transportation, military, HUD, etc. As Trump keeps saying, this is a “whole of government” and really, a “whole of nation” issue.

  43. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Stanglass

This will be my last Covid post. My head cold finally broke…I’m beginning to feel human again. You are absolutely correct on this thread as you were last night.

Ironic or something…that you and I could disagree so much about JW but agree about the Virus…that’s because we’re debating FACTS with one and opinion on the other….one of the beauties of sports is that we can all have and enjoy our opinions because no lives are lost…just hurt feelings.

So Stan I leave you with advice I should have taken last night.

    It’s from a favorite…the late George Carlin…

The Bucs often rely on young guys on the defensive side the ball to rise to the occasion, which they often fail to do, for example, the secondary. If the Bucs can get a veteran presence back there it will instantly make the Bucs a playoff contender and provide quality depth.

Who cares about those old guys (like me) and all the others who will only “get sick”. People die- -get over it!
I feel sorry for those on this site that are here to talk football and forget the rest. I suggest you speculate how a rested Tom Brady and a two-year upgrading by the Bucs will do in 2021. Maybe in two years the Bucs can find a good RB and OL.

The NFL doesn’t like the defending champs to open up on the road, the one exception to that recently was when the Ravens did in Baltimore 8 years ago because the Orioles were in the playoffs at the same time iirc.
