Cowboys Sniffing Around Suh?

March 23rd, 2020

Courted?

UPDATED 1:36 p.m – Call it a marriage made in 2010.

In 2010, clearly the two best defensive tackles coming out of college football also happened to be blood rivals in college. That would be Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska and Gerald McCoy of Oklahoma.

The two Big XII stars would go back-to-back, Nos. 2 and 3; Suh to the Lions, GMC to the Bucs.

Now, could the two be united on the Cowboys?

A year ago the Bucs waved goodbye to GMC and replaced him with Suh. Both were free agents last week. GMC already signed with the Cowboys and Jane Slater of NFL.com claims Jerry Jones is nosing around Suh.

Now ever since the combine the Bucs gave every indication that Suh wants to return. It seems either Suh is weighing his options or he doesn’t like what the Bucs have put on his plate.

Given the narrative swirling throughout the NFL that free agents are beating down the door of Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to play with new Bucs quarterback Tom Brady (and thus far the only guy who signed is a dude who played on the same offensive line that got Andrew Luck maimed), it seems odd that Suh is a target of — or is targeting — other teams.

And if this is true, that other free agents are heavy-panting to play with Brady, how come the only one we’ve heard about is whackjob Antonio Brown?

UPDATED: Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Cowboys are now close to signing three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dontari Poe, who turns 30 in August.

  1. Swampbuc Says:

“Experts” had every quarterback in the league coming to the Bucs, people say stuff without basis or any reliable factual sourcing. Just a lot of speculation because speculation is a lot easier than doing the work. As the Joes know very well, which is why the Joes are very successful covering the Bucs and these other bandwagonners don’t know what they are talking about.

  2. toby Says:

Joe, Brady is your QB now stop hating.

  3. Sport Says:

Not sure the reason for for Suh not being signed yet. My guess is he didn’t like the initial offer and will see what the market has to offer.

Also, you could change the name for any team looking to upgrade their Dline and find those names on it. Not really news, but it is something to read during the offseason and lockdown.

  4. SOEbuc Says:

Bucs really got to weigh their options here. Suh would be a one year $7-$10 million deal. He’s not JPP old and BA and TB12 will likely be out by at most three years. I say trade up a couple spots if need be to get Kinlaw or trade back in the first for and they could still pick up a talented DT early.

  5. Dewey Selmon Says:

McCoy and Suh on the same line? Like Messi and Ronaldo playing together.

  6. Hodad Says:

He’s worth at least, if not more then McCoy, what did he get? I can’t pitcher Suh playing alongside McCoy. Who gets #93?

  7. JimmyJack Says:

One thing about it is when Suh left LA them fans didn’t seem to care. Didn’t seem like he was appreciated there. In Tampa Bay he’s been nothing but appreciated…….Except for that lone reporter who still trys convincing McCoy is better.

He’s appreciated here and I gotta think that matters. Also sounds like Suh like the makeup of this team and I will assume he would give the Bucs a chance to match any offers.

I think if Suh is not a Buc it’s strictly money. Only if somebody gives him more then we are willing to give.

  8. D-Rome Says:

If this happens then my fake roster on Madden will become real.

  9. Sport Says:

Joe – to your question about FA’s wanting to play with TB, do you expect players other than AB to be completely desperate clowns and beg to play here?

Duh…they have sanity on their side and will let their agents do the talking for them and the Bucs will determine the fit scheme and money wise. Going straight to twitter tells the rest of the teams they are second fiddle. Who wants a player on their team that wants to be somewhere else.

    Pretty simple actually.

  10. 2020 year of the GOAT Says:

hate to see him go ….. he was tough at clogging up the middle ….. helped the line backers to have more time and freedom…..

  11. Mitch Says:

NFL is currently reporting that Dallas is close to signing Dontari Poe to a contract. I am glad for that. As a fan I really hope Suh comes back to Tampa.

  12. Allbuccedup Says:

The bucs already got a steal from Denver in Shaq Barrett. Shelby Harris is still in his late 20’s sign to a 3 year 30 mil. The Broncos are offering him peanuts if you don’t act pretty soon you will lose Suh and have no one to turn too.

  13. Todd Says:

    But who would get #93?!

  14. Marine Buc Says:

Cowboys paid McCoy @ $5.5 million. I Doubt they can afford Suh. Dontari Poe will probably fit the Cowboys budget at this point. Let’s hope they sign Poe soon.

  15. '79 Defense Says:

“Given the narrative swirling throughout the NFL that free agents are beating down the door…to play with new Bucs quarterback Tom Brady.”

So who are these free agents?

Also, wasn’t there a post on this site saying that the truth was that player agents weren’t getting the offers they had hoped, or offers at all, so now they say “hey, my client is willing to take less to play with Brady.”

  16. 941bucsfan Says:

If you watch tape, you will see vita getting doubleteamed and not suh…. suh is a loafer guys. Had a ton of one on one situations and didnt do a damn thing. No market for suh out there. When he is ready to take 4.5$ mil then he will be on a team

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I can only assume that we simply don’t want to pay Suh’s price and are hoping it comes down by letting him test the market…..
He must not be a huge priority…..

Would love to have him back……to resign everyone except Nassib would be great.

  18. Buddhaboy19 Says:

    Suh and McCoy playing together?

What about Jameis and Mariota with Chucky in Vegas,

    That would be tiddies.

Just goes to show that these #1 draft picks are pretty much run of the mill players.

The draft is a total CRAPSHOOT, to all you experts out there.

    #TIDDIES

  19. BucEmUp Says:

Cmon Suh please stay home!!!!! We beed ya big fella!!!!!

  20. Jean Lafitte Says:

Cool …can’t wait to see those two titans fight over the number 93.

Got my money on Kong Suh vs. McSofty

  21. WestChap Says:

Suh’s “loafing” (?) is better than 99% of DT’s A-game when it comes to stopping the run. Quit hating… and, Jason, quit stalling and given him whatever he wants within reason. He surely would take $9… who cares if its 8 or 7… and don’t try to push him down to GMC’s $5-6… that’s the going rate for gazelles who quickly vacate their run gaps… manbeasts are more expensive.

  22. Soberinsac Says:

Joe has said Suh is like mercenary and wants get paid. So if thats true hes just waiting for the best offer and there is nothing odd about it at all.

  23. Sarasota Garey Says:

Does Texas have a state tax?

  24. BigMacAttack Says:

No state tax in Tx like Fl

  25. Bird Says:

Time for baby joe ‘s binky

Yah…no one wants to play with tom brady

They want to play with jameis . 😂
Jameis was so close to playing in his 1st playoff game 😂

Dude , An XFL qb just got signed before jameis.

  26. Bird Says:

I thought mccoy deal was 3 years 20 mil
Now it looks like 3 years 18.3

So suh wants more then that .

One year 7 or 7.5 mil should do it.

  27. JimmyJack Says:

Suh is a loader…….Bro why don’t you go rewatch the games and tell me how many times Suh was deep down field chasing and tackling? Please I beg you.

And after you do that you tell me the last time we had a DT who showed that much hustle. I got news for you. If you don’t use Vita as your only example you are going back decades buddy.

    What an ignorant flipping comment.

  28. Clean House Says:

    WHO WILL BE #93

  29. JimmyJack Says:

Yeah Suh is a loafer. And McCoy was the ultimate hard worker. Dude you must be brainwashed.

Your probably reading the LA Rams narritive they used to make themselfs feel better for losing a good football player. The results speak for themselfs…….Suh leaves and Aaron Donald’s numbers plummett……….And when we walked into their Coliseum it was Kong Suh who closed out the game and stuffed it right back into their dirty faces.

  30. ATrain Says:

    SIGN SUH

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

Suh is a generational talent and he’s put enough on tape to prove it.

The ONLY DL in this draft who could fill Suh’s shoes would be Young and he’s going 2nd or 3rd depending on the QB”s same as when Suh went.

Kinlaw certainly has more tread on the tires but he is not Suh. The pass rush for the Bucs is developing nicely and we don’t need stats from every position.

We now have synergy where the sum is greater than the whole. Yeah Suh and VV are not big sack artists…but in addition to anchoring the best run defense in the league they are disruptive enough to let JPP and Shaq feast.

Collapse the pocket in the middle…flush the QB and let the outside rushers feast.

  32. stpetebucsfan Says:

    JJ

Amen…scoop and roll into the end-zone.

  33. RagingBrisket Says:

Can’t let him leave. Too critical up front stopping the run.

  34. JP09 Says:

I’d like to see them offer Suh 7.5 and Offer Clowney 15 with incentives. We had roughly 23 million before Brate’s restructured contract. After that they can find a way to free up another 6 million for the draft class by cuts and more restructuring.

Vea, Suh, Clowney, JPP, Barrett, David & White that’s a formidable front 7

    Draft a RT rd 1

  35. Sumosam Says:

As a fan of D line football, I’m all in on suh. He is very good in this defense and you gotta love the way he played here last year. He knows and we know he’s got another year or two left. He’s never had a major injury. Dude is tough as nails. Maybe both sides are waiting to see what happens in the draft before he signs here. We forget these guys are wealthy. If I was Suh, I’d go play where I wanted to play. He made a ton in his career. I believe him when he says he wants to play here. Why wouldn’t he. No pressure. He understands what’s going on here.

  36. 941bucsfan Says:

JJ aint no market for suh bro. Dude been let go by 3 diff teams and everytime its been for less money. Suh aint it. Bucs know they dont need suh. The tape dont lie. Sorry to get you butt hurt JJ. We can find better ways to spend the money rather than a loafer who looking for his last payday. Anthony nelson time

  37. Cobraboy Says:

    Not worried.

Suh signed with the Bucs in late May 2019.

    He takes his time.

No need for overreaction or panic.

He said he wants to be a Buc, and I take him at his word until otherwise stated or signed.

  38. unbelievable Says:

    Really hope we keep Suh!

  39. Cobraboy Says:

    @941bBcfan:

You DO understand, being the genius talent and scheme evaluator you are, that Nelson and Suh play completely different positions.

    :sigh:

Casual fans…can’t reason with them, illegal to kick their butt…

  40. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Cobraboy, could we maybe just plug Cameron Brate into that spot? 😉

  41. Cobraboy Says:

    Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Cobraboy, could we maybe just plug Cameron Brate into that spot? 😉

Casuals would complain about the cap hit…

  42. Rod Munch Says:

Did you see what the God awful SJW’s at Nike did with the new Rams logo? It’s awful. Now I understand why the Glazers just said copy and paste our previous non-Nike uniforms instead of doing something more creative.

Nike is awful at their jobs, in addition to being a game company, and the NFL needs to get out of this deal.

  43. mark2001 Says:

Sounds like Poe is the front runner in D. Hopefully they will sign him.

  44. 813bucboi Says:

    SUH will sign in June….

    this is what he does…..

imo, bucs and SUH have already agreed on a contract and the bucs know he’ll be in pewter and red….

let the big fella rest, relax and come back fresh….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  45. DoooshLaRue Says:

Munchers talking about his true passion…… fashion!

    Anywho…..back to sports.

  46. Marine Buc Says:

    @ 941

We have @ $16 million left to spend. We need to sign our draft picks and still add like 3-4 more vets.

  47. JimmyJack Says:

Great 941……Don’t address the loafing. Don’t address anything that I said. Heck maybe you saw some things I didn’t and can learn me something……..But nah go right to the nametelling like a toddler. And straight to your manifested Suh market where nobody wants him…….Which is freaking funny because I just looked up a free agent ranking and it disagrees with you. Suh # 16 avialable player…….I could look up three more but I figure one is enough. I’m sure they all say the same.
You see this is me having a discussion with you……in where I’m addressing what you said with a counter argument and valid points……….Feel free to join in if you want.

Otherwise post some more jibberish and nonsense so I may ignore you and move on.

  48. JimmyJack Says:

Marine…….Don’t really follow CAP space closely but just to compare used spotrac and it said both Cowboys and Bucs have roughy the same exact CAP room. There figure was at 24M for both teams.

I’m pretty sure these numbers fluctuate based on sites used so I’m sure your 16M is accurate. Probably just a separate site using different formula.

  49. sincethebeginning Says:

We have GOT to close the deal with Suh and bring him back. There can be no question about his value.

  50. WhatTheBuc Says:

Bucs have something closer to 25 million in cap space Marine

  51. Defense Rules Says:

JP09 … And I’d like to see them offer Suh a 2-year, fully guaranteed contract at $9-$10 mil per year. IMO he’s THAT valuable to this defense. I really hope that the Bucs’ management doesn’t screw around & screw around and miss out on signing him. He’s the critical cog now in that DLine. Without him, neither JPP or Shaq would be nearly as productive.

  52. Dewey Selmon Says:

Most likely told Suh to go see what he can get, but give the Bucs a chance to match it. I think the Brady effect leads Suh back to us.

  53. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … Both Spotrac & Over-the-Cap have the Bucs at $24.9 salary Cap space at the present time with 58 players signed (and that includes Brate’s restructured contract, as well as Minter’s re-signing). They included Adams, Nunez-Roches & Haeg in the list, but didn’t have contract details for any of them yet, so that may reduce it a little.

Signing the rooks is supposed to cost $7.8 mil this year if we stay at #14. Plus when we sign veterans (like Suh, and backup QB & starting Safety?), they’ll bump some of those in the Top-51, as will some of the rookies making more than the lower-paid players. So I think it’s hard to tell how much room we REALLY have at the moment, but my guess would be that we’ve got around $30 mil total to play with to sign about 5 veterans (including Suh & Ryan Smith I hope, as well as potentially Barber, plus a backup QB & starting Safety), and to sign our rookies PLUS leave a little breathing room for injury replacements.

What I think is amazing is that as tight as our salary Cap situation is, the rest of the NFC South is in much worse shape. If we have a solid draft and get 3-4 starters/key rotational players, we should be able to make a run at the playoffs.

  54. Bucnjim Says:

Suh was a leader last year and this team needs field generals. They hold everyone to a higher standard just like Brady will do for the offense.

  55. THETRUTH Says:

Cowboys going to play 3-4 , 2 players same position for that much money makes no sense.

  56. Owlykat Says:

JP09-Clowney is already signed this year. We need Suh back who picked up and ran back fumbles to get us touchdowns. He is no loafer! Just ask BA and our DC. They know just how valuable Suh is. Moreover, Suh used to have a reputation as a dirty player but he cleaned up his act last year and was a great
mentor to our young players and a sure fire tackler to stop runners dead in their tracks.

  57. Brad Says:

See if a Chris Jones trade can be worked out

  58. Marine Buc Says:

    @ defense

I hope you right. We started with like $85 mil plus and I thought we had plenty to bring everyone back home. Then Brady, Shaq and JPP signed. Lol… I’m not complaining I’m very happy with our FA signings so far.

I don’t think we still have $30 mil left after signing Auclair, Hudson, Mitchell, Nunez-Roaches, Joe Haeg, Minter and Adams. Plus $25m + $16m + 13.5m that is $54.5 million right there for Brady, Shaq and JPP.

    $85m – $54.5m = $30.5m

No way we still have $30m after all the other 7 signings that I listed above. I realize that we will probably gain @ $1m-$1.5m from the Brate restructure. I bet we have less than $20m right now.

  59. lewis Says:

Thats not the cowboys snffing thats joe sniffings sues asssss

  60. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Let’s resign a Boy Named Suh!

  61. CalBucsFan Says:

Suh’s likely listening to offers and likely to resign later in the summer with Bucs. If not, then Kinlaw would likely jump to the top of the draft board for the Bucs, if he’s not there already.

However, the more I think about it the more I would prefer the Bucs resign Suh for 1-year and then use the first pick for our future QB to just sit behind and learn from the GOAT over the next 2-years with the intent being that the Bucs are truly turning the page to become a perennial contender for not only the short term, but long term as well.

    Go Bucs!

  62. Marine Buc Says:

    @ calbucfan

I agree. Depending on how the draft goes we could re-sign Suh, Perriman, Dotson, Gabbert, Watford and Wells. All were with us last year and could provide solid depth. Most of them will have to wait until after the draft.

  63. westernbuc Says:

The problem is that at this point the free agents are way more questionable, and teams cant’t bring them in. So everything is kinda at a standstill
