Evaluating Quarterbacks

February 26th, 2020

Searching for answers.

A peek into why Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians may have soured on Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, may have come yesterday.

And he wasn’t necessarily talking about Jameis.

When Arians stepped to his podium yesterday at the Indiana Convention Center (nee: Hoosier Dome) in downtown Indianapolis yesterday (Arians had competition for attention because also speaking at the same time were Super Bowl champion coach Andy Reid, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst and Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert), Arians was asked what are the traits he looks for in a quarterback.

Arians said it is actually two elements and that has never changed in his decades in football:

“The heart and the head,” Arians said.

Now we know Jameis has the heart. Maybe too big. The guy gets so wound up before games, especially at home. Joe is convinced Jameis lets his heart cloud his head and he makes some of the craziest decisions you will ever see.

And that leads Joe to Jameis’ head. Where in that noggin of his (especially for a guy every coach he has worked with brags about his Football IQ) makes him think he can make some of the throws he makes or more accurately doesn’t make?

A guy with a high Football IQ normally would learn from these mistakes. Jameis doesn’t seem to.

And those two elements right there may be why Arians is so anxious to see what is behind the secretive Door No. 2.

Lust is in BA’s heart @ the 2020 NFL Combine

  2. Pewter power Says:

This must be the logical joe posting this article. BA has been around long enough to know you cant win when you constantly give the ball to your opponent and spot them points by way of pick 6’s. Say what you want but 30 interceptions and the defense only allowed a lot of them to go for 3 points

  3. D-Rome Says:

Bucs have made it clear they want to extend Chris Godwin before or during training camp. They believe he has a great future because he’s a great football player.

The same can’t be said for Jay-Miss.

I told you all preseason prediction
“Jameis would play just good enough to put the top QB prospects out of reach ”
    .

will the Bucs reach in 57 days ? or sweat bullets waiting for the draft to unfold in front of them…especially when teams behind might fear the Bucs will draft a QB and jump in front of them

Said it since 2015 his decision making makes him the dumbest qb in the league. Might be book smart but he plays dumb

  7. Kevin Says:

We have very dumb owners to say that they want Brady and fail to get him. That will only lose more fans

  8. Robert Says:

Brady has more heart x 4 and head x ….well jw doesn’t equate in that category

most average qb’s have more head than JW, he just has the luxury of the best WR duo in the league.

  9. Bird Says:

    1000 percent agree

Best take on jameis you guys have ever done in just a short article !

And No one should question the heart unless you absolutely just hate the man

Logical joe is Absolutely destroying it today!

  10. Mr. Reality Says:

This isn’t about Winston having such a big heart. Any QB in the NFL with a glimmer of hope to be successful has to have that drive, that love for the game, the desire to be the best at the trade, the emotion that goes with the atmosphere. Those who don’t never last. From Ryan Leaf to Ryan Mallet and even Andrew Luck. So let’s not give Winston too much credit here. HOWEVER, he doesn’t have the knoggin. he is not stupid by any stretch. I take it as being stubborn and arrogant in not listening to those he should listen to. From his coaches to clergy to the law. He cares about what Jameis wants, not about other people from all I see, and it has shown on and off the field. And I don’t think anyone will ever get through to him. The Bucs should have parted with him two years ago. It’s not to much heart…it’s lack of using his head…and it’s a vacuum…and it’s not about intelligence.

  11. straightshooter Says:

Rumor has it Brady said he would only sign for the Bucs if the team got rid of the alarm clock numbers. He’s the reason for the uniform change.

  12. Cobraboy Says:

“Heart clouding the head” = inability to control emotions = immaturity/mental issue = poor decision making as seen in on-field play and personal life.

I did a quick look-see, and found that above the 6 pick-6’s last season, of the thirty int’s, 7 gave the opponent the ball already in scoring position, and 9 came when the team was in scoring position. I could be off one or so, but the evidence is damning.

So 22 of the 30 directly affected game scoring and 7 put the defense behind the 8-ball right away.

That is NO WAY to have a winning season. I, for one, am sick of it.

I have a hard time believing a “game manager” would damage this team more than Winston has proven.

  13. miken Says:

BA is a great coach and been around a long time. He knows #3 needs to be replaced but like Joe says… I’ll put up with you untill I can replace you. I doubt BA goes after a rookie. #3 should be back because most good qbs will be under contract by the start of free agency.

  14. Craig Says:

I have met many who were book smart but incapable of having any common sense. Common sense is along the lines of street smarts and field smarts.

Maybe Jameis can’t get there because no one has ever told him no and created a need for him to put it all together.

Maybe he has gotten there now, though I have doubts. The Bucs need to find their best option and Arians might be able to find it. I Jameis makes it back to the scene of the crime he needs to make an early impact or be riding the pine by game 4.

  15. BrianBucs Says:

Arians knows he can’t win with Winston.
However, his thoughts may not be the same thoughts of Licht and the Glazers.
Arians may get outvoted and outranked.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Panthers have announced they will stay with Cam Newton as their starter.

That’s another one off the list. I knew this whole QB shuffle hype was just bologna.

  17. Cobraboy Says:

If the team can’t work a deal with another QB they have their eyes on, Winston may be the default.

Has anyone written about where Winston is rumored to go if Tampa does not make an acceptable offer? I mean Brady, Rivers, Bridgewater, etc., are all rumored to land somewhere else. What about Winston?

Does anyone think Winston can be a big success without his top receivers, among the absolute best in the NFL? Reduced turnovers? By 60%? I don’t.

I could be very wrong, but I’m skeptical about his value elsewhere. I also think both the Bucs and Winston’s agent know this.

Winston’s track record, both on and off the field, has caused his problems.

Love it! The logical Joe and the Hysterical Joe. I have shut down now. Just can’t listen to the berating of the fans anymore for a logical opinion, but there isn’t any room for fair disagreement on the entertainment loving side of joebucs.

Arians has full control of this team. If they keep Winston, it is because he wanted to keep him.

And they more than likely will keep Winston…unless someone big hits the street who isn’t old. Ages 28-32 would be acceptable.

I have to admit…I would love the irony if the Raiders get Brady, we get Carr, we play them in the superbowl in Tampa and beat them with their former QB.

    That would be soooo sweet.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

CBA will be approved this week, as I predicted. Told you doubters!

A lot of players are about to hit the street because teams will only be able to apply one tag.

Jones has to choose between his QB and his top WR. Hope he’s dumb wnough to choose the WR.

JMO, but you cannot coach the gunslinger out of the gunslinger & make him Capt Checkdown. You go sign FA Capt. Checkdown (Bridgewater) or draft one…

Brett Favre wouldn’t be Brett Favre w/o the gunslinger mentality.
Mahomes wouldn’t be a SB winner, if not for the gunslinger in him.

  22. thisisouryear!! Says:

I think the head with Jameis is actually anxiety issues. I don’t think he’s dumb and I certainly know why Joe and half the fan base don’t want to move on from him. But I think everyone will agree once he gets into a game he’s different. He locks onto receivers, doesn’t play with what the defense will give him.

I think that’s what is so frustrating is he is phenomenal until he is in the game situation. His pressure decision making is poor. The question when is it time to move on. He could figure this out and calm down during game situations (he hasn’t over 5 years) or he could continue. I really don’t know. I find myself going back and forth.

  23. catcard202 Says:

Peyton Manning threw 100 picks in his 1st 5yrs…I think he turned out OK.

  24. D-Rome Says:

CBA will be approved this week, as I predicted. Told you doubters!

The only people that doubted you on this are the ghosts in your own broken mind. Your predictions are worthless. You predicted deep playoff runs over the past two years. You predicted Adam Humpries and Kwon Alexander would be pro bowlers. You predicted Dirk Koetter would be back for a 4th year. That said, I do agree with you that Jay-Miss will very likely be the starter for the Bucs this year.

  25. #1 Pick QB 2 Cent Brain Says:

How many did Manning have in year 5?

How many did he have against passs defenses that ranked towards the bottom of the league?

In year 5 was Manning regressing or still looking like a rookie for long stretches?

    Stats don’t tell everything

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @D-Rome

Typical hater-speak. Deny everything when proven wrong. Multiple people doubted it buddy. And so far as my predictions, I suppose when Brady goes back to the Patriots this year, you’ll claim no one ever doubted that too.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“You predicted Adam Humpries and Kwon Alexander would be pro bowlers. You predicted Dirk Koetter would be back for a 4th year.”

    • Never predicted that. I said that Humphries SHOULD have been given the season he had here. I never said Kwon earned it. I said that it was possible sometime in the future. Still is.

    • You go the Koetter thing wrong too. I said I could live with him coming back, that I liked him, but that I also understood if they got rid of him, because he self destructed during the season.

You need to get your memory checked, buddy. When I make predictions, I may be right or wrong, but I own up to them. No need to make things up.

And so far as Winston, there are dozens of people here saying he won’t be re-signed. I suppose you’ll claim no one doubted it when it happens.

And finally, why you picking on me? I treat you respectfully. I have feelings. I bleed. Can’t we all get along? Even if we disagree? 😛

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

@#1 Pick QB 2 Cent Brain

Winston’s picks were not that bad in years 1-4.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Also:
“The only people that doubted you on this are the ghosts in your own broken mind. Your predictions are worthless.”

Worthless, yet no one doubts me? lol 😛

Exactly, does he pass the eye test. We have never seen growth (maybe the long ball). Fitzgerald has had a few highlight real moments, and set bucs and league records, but he is fitzgerald, and that is who he is. I see Jameis making a good backup carrear with a few oportunities to get money that he will ultimately squander.

  31. Show me the TDs Says:

Just a guess, but could it also be 30 INTs, 5 fumbles, 60.7% completion rate, 84.28 QBR and six pick 6s???

  32. FB (Team Steve I) Moderated!! Says:

I still think Arians takes a another shot at winston. I think a lot of this is negotiating tactics, but that being said, I am sure winston will be on a short leash, and the cost of that with a viable backup as opposed to another safer option, with a pick that has the cheap potential is a hell of a lot easier to achieve this year. And that makes it easier to field a better team.

That being said, I don’t think the bucs plan on tagging Jameis, because I think they know the market will be significantly less. As I said before, Andy Dalton and a 10 million dollar player would likely make the team better than just Jameis on the tag.

  33. FB (Team Steve I) Moderated!! Says:

Show me, it was SEVEN pick SiXES. 49 points!!! hence the name santa clause, or the double entendre ATM, for America’s turnover machine, and for the money he makes opposing QBs.

  34. JimmyJack Says:

Bonzai there isn’t a chance the CBA will go through this week. You’re prediction will crash and burn. Afterward I can’t wait to hear you squirm.

  35. TexBuc Says:

Ask yourself “if the Bucs are moving on from Winston what is stopping them from announcing that we have moved on?”

Easy we have not moved on.

  36. #1 Pick QB 2 Cent Brain Says:

    Bonzai

If he can stay at the 14-16 range he gives the team a chance

In 2018 he had 14 in 9 starts that was the beginning of the high totals I believe

The decision making is always gonna be a concern with him

  37. Piratic Says:

    EXACTLY.

Jameis is the poster child for “Million dollar arm with a five-cent head.”

We were sold a bill of goods on this guy.

NFL-ready QB as a rookie?! What a joke, he STILL makes mistakes that high school QBs know not to make!

  38. TOM Says:

IMHO Winston is worthless. The Bucs will never reach the playoffs with him at QB. I would gladly take Carr for Winsome. I do believe that Dalton at 17mil. would give the Bucs a better chance at the playoffs. Plus have extra money to sign our FA’s.

  39. SmoothBayRider Says:

If you have to worry about your QB making a dumb decision , do you really have a QB ?

  40. Tye Says:

Arians is not getting any younger and he wants to win now…
He expected better of a season with Jameis but he was proven wrong…

He gave JW a fair chance but in the end, Winston confirmed he is more of a liability than he is an asset… Coach likely doesn’t want to chance losing (if they ever even stumble into) the playoffs with him throwing the game away at the end,,,
You just can’t trust a guy that chokes in pressure situations!

  41. stpetebucsfan Says:

Can we stop beating around the bush. I do not believe all those coaches and experts who claim JW has a high football IQ were wrong.

But possessing knowledge is not the only requirement…the ability to process that knowledge quickly can be just a critical for a QB.

So JW can read defenses, probably do a decent job of predicting what they’ll do next based on all his film study…knows the complicated Arians playbook backwards and forwards…but gets on the field and his mental computer just crashes.

Said in more direct, totally unsympathetic, old school language…JW is a choker!

  42. AllhailJPP Says:

Stop saying “high football IQ” the guy doesn’t know to throw the ball when scrambling before crossing the line of scrimmage

  43. D-Rome Says:

And finally, why you picking on me? I treat you respectfully. I have feelings. I bleed. Can’t we all get along? Even if we disagree?

My apologies. I mean that. I get a laugh from some of the posts on here, yourself included. After re-reading what I wrote it would be very difficult to tell that I was messing with you.

  44. Pick6King Says:

Talk is cheap. I’ll wait for actions. It looks like they’re already trying to justify bringing back the turnover machine for at least one more year. Which equals another failed season with no playoffs.

Licht basically said that he was happy with last season’s results. That tells me he’s going to double down on Jamoist. And I hope he loses his job for it.

    Mo Jameis, Mo problems.

  45. Slugglife Says:

“I have feelings. I bleed.” That was a classic ending.

  46. TexBuc Says:

My opinion is Winston’s lasik will help and I believe he had worse vision than he will admit.
