Deciphering Bucs’ QB Messaging

February 28th, 2020

Doomed?

People out there came away from Tuesday’s media availability with Bucco Bruce Arians and Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht thinking Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is toast in Tampa Bay.

Joe isn’t willing to go there yet but it sure smells bad from the angle of a coach and a GM not supporting the best quarterback in franchise history.

Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner appeared on The Rich Eisen Show this week where Warner and the host tried to make sense of Arians’ and Licht’s messaging.

Warner suggested Arians doesn’t hate Jameis; he’s just looking out for his Bucs team. For all of the good Jameis does, Warner admitted, he’s Pearl Harboring his Bucs days with the picks.

Listen to Warner explain what he thinks is Jameis’ biggest problem in the video below.

    Brad Johnson is our best QB in history.

    Jameis owns-meaningless yards and points. No playoffs in 5 years- makes him not the best.

    The new era of football allows for more stats.

    Joe stating Jameis is the “best Bucs QBs ever” is like stating we should keep a less than average QB bc he accrues more yards and points. Too bad you don’t look at “net points and yards” by discounting the yards/points off turnovers and bonehead plays.

  3. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

    Adios!

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    The messaging is very clear to me…….we aren’t going to pay $30 million for this product…..we are looking for an alternative……if we don’t find one, we may keep him at a lower price. It is pure and simple negotiating…..done all of the time, every day in all types of situations.

  5. stpetebucsfan Says:

    At minimum…if it’s just posturing and negotiating we’ve definitely reached the hardball stage…in fact that may have been a high hard one tossed at JW and his agent’s head.

  6. T REX Says:

    Best Bucs QB=tallest midget

    Winston’s 5000 yards are a joke. If he wasn’t so mentally weak we would have had a real back up and he would have been BENCHED!

    Dude is a loser and I can’t wait for him to be gone.

  7. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

    I thought it was an bad omen when Jameis bookended his Buc career with a Pick 6.

    His 1st attempt in the NFL was a Tennessee ready Pick 6 and his last attempt.

    The writing was on the wall.

  8. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    Joe says: “Listen to Warner explain what he thinks is Jameis’ biggest problem”

    Really?

    Like we had to listen to Warner to find out what we’ve all seen for 5 years.

    Give us some credit Joe.

  9. Hamsadwitchtime Says:

    Steven K… lol

  10. geno711 Says:

    Cam Newton is the best quarterback in Carolina’s history. They are probably moving on. This is a business to get the best guys to help you win. Not a nostalgia tour.

  11. Gettinthebucs Says:

    Yeah I think he’s gone. I’d really love to see what he can do with a second year in the offense. I dont know man, maybe the Lasik helps? Being an FSU fan I’ve been in the dudes corner forever but you’re not making the playoffs with the league leader in turnovers. It’s probably never happened and never will. I’ll let the Joe’s research that because I’ve got to get back to work.

  12. Deez days Says:

    If the Bucs bring jameis back you can kiss the season goodbye

  13. Jeagan1999 Says:

    When it comes to Winston, the silence of Bucs coaches and executives is deafening! If they were convinced that he was “their guy”, they would be using the same kind of language they used with Shaq Barrett….”He ain’t going nowhere!” Instead we get statements like “We think we can win with Jameis, but we think we can with with other guys too.” or “We need to see what’s behind behind door 2”. Those are hardly ringing endorsements of a guy who was supposed to have figured it all out in season 5, but continued to show the glaring inconsistencies that make him such a question mark.

  14. Tval Says:

    All you losers will be on his jock when he comes back. Lol!!! Bruce is just old school dumb and doesn’t know how to talk to the media. “Mentally weak” is jumping on, off-season, click bait. That’s what YOU goofballs sound like. Stop embarrassing yourselves. .

  15. BigHog Says:

    Brad Johnson best QB…where? No such thing as meaningless…it was our only way to move the ball as a team …for the life of me I can’t see how you people use that term without giving it some kind of thought…we could not run the football…which means Mr. 5,000 had to do what he had to do…understanding is the best thing in the world!! Mr. 5,000 for President!!!

  16. Sport Says:

    I thought the HC was very clear in his statements. The actions from the GM are also clear.

    At this point, it’s easy to put the pieces together. They believe for a guy (JW) demanding $30M+ a year, he should have had a better
    December. He did it. He digressed and played himself into this situation.

    They also believe JW is probably in a tie for 4th or 5th best option are QB.
    Brady
    Carr
    Rivers
    Tannehill
    Bridgewater

    Brady is driving the QB decisions on at least 5 clubs.
    Patriots
    Chargers
    Raiders
    Titans
    Bucs

    Until that is settled, long term decisions are on hold.

    In BA I Trust!

  17. BrianBucs Says:

    Defense wins championships.
    Turnovers lose games.
    Bucs need to move on from Winston.

  18. geno711 Says:

    New Orleans moved on from the statistically best quarterback in their history, Aaron Brooks, to Drew Brees.

    So moving on from your best statistical quarterback may not be the worst move – right guys?

  19. Tval Says:

    Lmao @ Carr, Rivers, Brady, And TANNEHILL?? Bucco might as well throw in the towel on his career if he thinks those guys survive 2 months behind this o-line. Jameis, ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, is head-and-shoulders above ALL those HORRIFIC options. Two 40 year olds, 4th and sack Carr, hand-off Tannehill?? Bwahahaaaaaaaaaa!!! Do you Jameis haters have ZERO foresight? I LOVE Brady but he’s TOAST. why do you think the pats are SO willing to move on from the goat?? Don’t be dense. ALWAYS loved Rivers. Gimme a BREAK with that. He wouldn’t last 2 weeks. Carr and Tannehill are GARBAGE. PERIOD!!!

  20. Tval Says:

    Also a coaching change, geno. And the other best option wasn’t 42. Lmao!!!!

  21. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Big Hog

    “You people”?

    Careful now.
    Practice what you preach.

  22. geno711 Says:

    Matthew Stafford is clearly the best statistical quarterback in Detroit’s history. He had a year with over 5000 yards and 41 TD’s and 16 interceptions.

    There is chatter that Detroit is looking to move on from Stafford this season.

    Teams move on.

  23. pryda...sec 147 Says:

  27. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Cannuck

    That’s probably your web history showing up.
    I think Rod Munch was complaining about Grindr ads popping up on his page.

  28. ATrain Says:

    Joe here is a poll to put out

    Which QB can you name quicker the QB with the MOST SB wins or the QB with the most yards thrown

  29. Aaron Says:

    Brad Johnson had one of the best defenses of all time and a good running game. Two things JW didn’t have…(not defending him – he has to be better)

  30. Coburn Says:

    At least I’m not the only one around here who still thinks Brad was the best QB we’ve ever had even though he only maintained that level a couple of years before age caught up

  31. Craig Says:

    You never know when Jameis is going to drop a friendly fire bomb. If you can find the worst time for it to happen you will be right most of the time. Take the last play of the season.

    Arians is actively searching for someone to replace Jameis. If he finds one he is comfortable with Jameis is gone. If not, Jameis is back with a drafted QB and Ryan damn Griffin nipping at his heels.

    We’ll see.

    Wasn’t Jeff Garcia benched because he screwed the goose one time too many? The Johnson came in and walked them into the Stupor Bowl.

  32. D-Rome Says:

    All people who are critical of Jay-Miss are Bucs fans.

    Many people who continually defend the indefensible when it comes to Jay-Miss are not Bucs fans. They are Jay-Miss fans.

    I’m looking forward to the day when the Buccaneers rightfully move on from this below average QB whether that’s this year or in the next couple of years. That way, all of you Winston fluffers and sycophants can go away. You were never Bucs fans.

  33. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Garcia came after Johnson

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    As I’ve said multiple times, I believe Jameis will be our starting quarterback for 2020 at least, unless the right guy comes along who is a clear upgrade.

    In current free agents, I don’t believe any who will realistically be available are a ‘clear’ upgrade.

    I don’t believe Brady will play for anyone but the Patriots, possibly for less than he gets offered elsewhere.

    I also don’t believe the Raiders really want him.

    It is Smoke and mirrors season, people. Believe nothing you hear. The Bucs are always unpredictable until the last moment. Most teams are, which is why Mike Mayock always had the best mock draft.

    • Brady is going nowhere

    • Carr with Brady going nowhere, Carr will remain a Raider

    • Rivers will possibly retire unless he takes a backup job

    • Tannehill isn’t going to be available

    • Bridgewater isn’t going to be available

    This whole QB FA hype is just hype. In the end, it will disappear.

  35. Jonzey Says:

    How can you say Winston is a loser. A loser don’t win National championships and Heisman. He fixed his eye sight and we got our defense together now and all we have to do now is repair our line and running game.

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    I think the smart move is to Franchise Tag Jameis, then draft either Tua (who might fall), Eason, or Herbert.

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    That way Winston gets one last chance while the Bucs prepare and develop his replacement if he fails.

    If we strike gold on the pick, then we’re sitting pretty with a younger backup and eventual starter.

  38. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Bonzaii

    You’re starting to back peddle aren’t you?
    You strongly asserted that JayMiss WILL be the starting QB for us this year just a week or two ago.

    BA’s talk has got you scared doesn’t it?

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    D-Rome Says
    “Many people who continually defend the indefensible when it comes to Jay-Miss are not Bucs fans. They are Jay-Miss fans.”

    You might be right. I can only speak for myself, but:

    • I am a Bucs fan. I bleed red and crap pewter, which is better than when I crapped orange 😉

    • I am a fan of just about any player on the team, unless that player is clearly not a team guy (like DJax)

    • I’m more cautious than Pro Jameis. I feel it is important we see how he does in a second year with Arians

    • That doesn’t mean I don’t want to draft a QB (just not in the first round unless it is Tua or we trade back up into the first)

    • I think you are misreading a lot of ‘keep Jameis’ fans. I believe many just want to be sure so the QB Curse doesn’t restart. Draft a QB who shows a lot of promise, and you might see many change sides. But that would also mean keeping Jameis one more year under the tag (because you don’t get rid of him until you have a good replacement, and I believe by draft time, the tag would be guaranteed)

    • If…if Tua falls to us and we take him, it is very possible he’ll need a year because of injury, so not getting locked into a multiple year contract with Jameis would be a good thing

  40. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Craig Says:
    “Wasn’t Jeff Garcia benched because he screwed the goose one time too many? The Johnson came in and walked them into the Stupor Bowl.”

    ~~~~
    No. Jeff Garcia did not join the BUCS until 5 years after the Super Bowl, lol.
  41. Pewter power Says:
    He’s not the best quarterback in franchise history, that’s an insult. Brad Johnson has a superbowl ring, doug Williams is in the ring of honor having only played 5 seasons just like winston who has done nothing in 5 years. You guys are delusional.
    The team, who had won just two games in the first two years of the franchise, went to the playoffs three times in five seasons with Doug Williams as starter and played in the 1979 NFC Championship Game, that’s a quarterback coming in and being the difference!!!
    Sapp told Geraldine you cant be calling yourself one of the best when the best in the franchise have a superbowl or playoff wins, Winston will be no different than Geraldine lota of meaningless individual stats and folks debating whether he’d ever be in the ring of honor.
  42. martinii Says:
    I was 100% sold on Jameis five years ago and yes my loyalty to him has diminished after 4 years of losing and one marginal showing that didn’t result in a playoff. I have admitted that I am not a football coach and in no way shape of form profess to know how to fix his problem. I do know for sure that the problem boils down to losing football games and common sense tells me that requires a team effort. Over five years in addition to Jameis’s errors other area’s of the team have been extremely deficient and I don’t believe coaching, and player acquisition have contributed…….. UNTIL 2019 and the BA regime. I see several area’s of improvement and for the first time I believe we have a serious chance to move off 7-9 and into the playoffs. I believe however that the BA improvements are complicated and will take 2 years to implement (at least to the playoff level.) One year down. That being said IMO the Buc’s need to use the 2nd year of BA and his army of Coaches and Jason/Arians FA and draft to finish the job or fold and start over. Now I am well into my 70’s and I want to win now but I am willing as a long time Buc fan to tolerate one more year and give this team a chance to move up. And to be FAIR that includes Winston. Consequently I say make every effort to keep him, give him a Running Game, and try to keep and add to a very much improved defense. Thats my final comment on what has become a divisive, fatiguing, and redundant subject. I will completely respect all other opinions because I fully realize there is a Sh*t load of them out there. Go Buc’s
  43. Pewter power Says:
    Jonzey says
    How can you say Winston is a loser. A loser don’t win National championships and Heisman.
    Marcus Mariota has a heisman and national championship too lol just saying. College means nothing when it comes to the pros, Winston is a loser period, doug William’s is the only example of a quarterback coming in and immediately leading this team. The team didn’t resign him and were irrelevant until sapp and brooks got here
  44. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:
    Being the Superbowl is the game that showcases the best, Brad Johnson is the best QB the Bucs ever had. And he was a game manager at best.
  45. El Buco Realisto Says:
    The way that the Bucs are “leaking” that they are so into OT smells like a misdirection!!!!!!!!!!! “Word on the street” is that the Bucs plan will be to move just into the top 10 to draft their QB, who will fall into the 8th to 10th pick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!
  46. SOEbuc Says:
    Just sign Jameis to a nice three year prove it deal. “Jameis you’re either going to be starting on a sh!tier team than we are for not a gigantic amount of money or on the bench for less money.'”-BA and Licht.
    Jameis owns-meaningless yards and points. No playoffs in 5 years- makes him not the best.
    The new era of football allows for more stats.
    Joe stating Jameis is the “best Bucs QBs ever” is like stating we should keep a less than average QB bc he accrues more yards and points. Too bad you don’t look at “net points and yards” by discounting the yards/points off turnovers and bonehead plays.
    ———————————
    Based on your stupid logic, Brad Johnson is #1, then surely Shaun King must be #2, and then Trent Dilfer is #3… because all that matters is wins, right? I guess the circumstances surrounding those QBs don’t matter at all. Like the fact that Brad Johnson piloted the Bucs when they had the best D in the NFL, or King or DIlfer for that matter. It doesn’t matter than none of them were not asked to throw the ball very much because they had superior defense and would play Dungy ball and would win with the Defense and Running Game formula.
    So Jameis stinks because his record stinks, gotcha. No need to remind anyone that the defense has probably been bottom five during his time here or that his running game was woeful in all but one season because he is what his record is.
    FYI, the 2002 version of Brad Johnson would’ve won three games for the Bucs last season. He COULDN’T do what was necessary to win. He couldn’t have played shootout games because his defense was dreadful. He couldn’t have made 20 yard throws into tight windows. He WOULD have checked down checked down checked down and Bucs would’ve led the league in punts. And you do realize that a punt is still a turnover, right? You’re giving the ball back to the other offense… whether you do it on one play or after three plays, the other team gets the ball back… and when your defense is dreadful, it will often lead to 7 points either way. I’m not even a fan of Jameis Winston but Winston is better than Johnson, who couldn’t even make it through the whole 2002 season without injury, he would’ve been murdered playing under Arians, he’s a million times better than King, and infinitely better than Trent Dilfer… who was also a Super Bowl winner. But again, that makes him an all-time great, nothing to do with a historically great Ravens defense in 2000.
  48. geno711 Says:
    I still don’t get all the hate on this blog site of Philip Rivers. Everyone on this site acts like last year proves he has nothing left. I am betting that he has quite a bit left.
    If everyone likes Jameis better, that is fine, have that opinion.
    Last year Rivers played with a head coach and offensive coordinator that are horrible for offenses. This year those guys both want a RPO quarterback.
    They will not be drafting a typical pro pass set quarterback this year. Talk about mis-information. They will be going with Tyrod Taylor or someone like Jalen Hurt. It is what they want – a quarterback that gives them a running option.
    I don’t necessarily think Rivers will have more pass yards than Jameis but I am clearly of the opinion that no matter where they end up next year, Philip Rivers will have a better TD/INT ratio than Jameis next year.
    I disagree so strongly with @Bonzai that Rivers is going to be a backup somewhere. He will be starting.
    Also @Bonzai, Bridgewater not going anywhere. What is your source? Seems like he is going somewhere other than New Orleans. Enlighten me if I am the only one not seeing that.
  49. Robert Says:
    27 million????? you get get any number of vets for much less, who have a better eye for the game.
    JW’s value WAS in his upside. he is going the opposite, as should his compensation.
    dude’s in for a wake up call.
  50. Tye Says:
    Jameis is the enemy within!
    When your QB plays for your opponent, you are asking your team every week to go out there and play 10 against 12 and try to win games… The longer JW is the QB the more history adds losing seasons to the Bucs..
    What good is having a dominant defense that gets turnovers when Jameis is well known for giving the ball right back to the opponent… 2nd quarter of the Texans game as most recent example!..
    JW is simply an extremely poor choice to be a starter!
  52. D-Rome Says:
    Bonzai,
    We all know you are a Bucs fan even if we disagree on the direction of the team. I was simply pointing out there are **MANY** out there who are Jameis Winston fans only, and not fans of the team. Some comment on this site, many are FSU supporters and alumni, and many more don’t really care about the direction of the team. Only that their guy is ballin’.
    I have to believe that given the comments made publicly that I’m not so sure Jameis will come back. On Monday I was almost certain he was coming back and like you, believe he will be under center week 1. Now I’m not so sure. Arians and Licht are saying things that do neither side any good. No team ever talks down a player the way they have only to come back and resign them at a lower price. That’s not the way to negotiate a contract especially when it’s not as if other teams are positioning themselves to sign him.
  53. Cobraboy Says:
    Winston was a turnover machine at FSU and in 5 Buc seasons.
    That is 7 years of evidence.
    Why do you guys/gals/xirs think one more season will prove a 180-degree turnaround?
    Or do you just enjoy poking sticks in your eyes?
  54. Tye Says:
    Most Jameis fans are easy to pick out… you can tell by their post..
    Bucs fans want to see this Bucs team successful, consistent contenders, winning, no matter who the players are!
    Jameis fans obviously would rather lose with JW than to win without him.. Spewing ignorance as if there can be no other qb in existence that can lead this team into playoffs and hopefully SB (which JW never has either but they live in fantasy land).. usually posts filled with excuses even though 31 other teams and numerous experts reveal JW just isn’t the talent his fans try desperately to make everyone else believe as they do..
You want Brady or Rivers behind that line they would be dead before they finished a three step drop. Lmao Carr would panic and probably set the new interception record next year if he took over. The Raiders have had a good O-line and decent run game under Carr’s tenure. My opinion is keep JW and draft Jalen Hurts to groom for 2021 if JW acres up next year every QB has struggled the first year in Arians offence. So give him protection and a run game and prep for the future.And Brad Johnson was not the best Buc’s QB he won a Superbowl because of Tony’s defense all he did was dink and dunk down the field all year in Gruden’s offense. The best Buc’s QB was the one we traded away his name was Steve Young, are you idiots ready to make the same mistakes twice.
  58. Red86 Says:
    The NFL has had many bust at quarterback. Someone who posted 5000 yards aren’t bust material, while near sighted. Jameis is Farve like, who happens to be in the HOF. Not all lost this year is all on Jameis. Missed field goals and horrible defense early in the year are a factor as well.
This is probably the hardest football schedule we’ve had in a long time Brady would be a plus but ! To much BS .
