Backup Desire

February 24th, 2020

Peter King

Within hours of Ben Roethlisberger resuming throwing a football last week following a serious elbow injury, and his no-nonsense general manager saying he’s in their plans for years to come, one NFL insider is talking about Jameis Winston signing with the Steelers this year.

You can’t make this stuff up.

Last week, some readers here criticized Joe for saying NBC Sports super guru Peter King was “all over the place” in his comments about the future of the Tampa Bay quarterback position.

Seemingly right on cue, King wrote today about his desire to see Jameis as a backup to Roethlisberger.

4. I think I really want the Steelers to sign Jameis Winston. Sit for a year, get him ready to conditionally succeed Ben Roethlisberger, and if the interceptions continue in 2021, he’s gone after one season. Risky, but the upside could be pretty great. Now, the contract would have to be one Winston would want to do; he’d likely have a chance to play sooner elsewhere if he leaves Tampa. I’m just talking about a coach-player relationship (Mike Tomlin-Winston) dynamic I’d like to see. Plus, I’d rather have Winston on the rebound than Mason Rudolph or Devlin Hodges or a draft pick that could be used in a wiser way.

Wow! King would prefer Jameis over Rudolph or Hodges. What insight!

Sure, King has an interesting thought, but this is about as realistic and likely as Joe getting invited to the annual preseason cheerleader hot tub party.

Oh, so that would explain why I saw Ira there but neither of the Joes. I’ll see if I can get you guys an invite this year.

    Peter King is a joke

  3. Nick2 Says:

What Peter King would like to see is not news and its not relevant. Who really cares what coach/player “dynamic” Peter King would like to see? I’d like to see Tom Brady with Jon Gruden but it will never happen.

  4. TOM Says:

    Leave it to Peter King.

  5. Bruce Blahak Says:

Truth hurts the WinSTUNNED huggers…he’s backup material, time will reveal it…

  6. Swampbuc Says:

Peter King gets paid to write this stuff, and yes, he is just making it up.

    Oh the moronity.

  7. miken Says:

This is how Jameis is seen out side the FSU/ Tampa circle. This is also why the Bucs are only bidding against themselves.

  8. BrianBucs Says:

Kind actually makes some good points.
So many people have compared Winston to Big Ben (on and off the field) that it kind of makes good sense.
It would probably do some good for Winston to sit for a year and watch and learn from a real Pro

  9. El Buco Realisto Says:

Wow, so far, only two nfl types will go on the record to say the only interest in jay-miss is a backup!!!!!!!!!!!! Pretty telling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. gotbbucs Says:

If Winston can’t get starter money, I said last week that the Steelers make a lot of sense.

  11. BrianBucs Says:

    King ^^^^*

  12. thisisouryear!! Says:

I’d like to see Winston in Pittsburgh as well (anywhere but here). I understand it’s difficult to risk free agency though. I think you’re only option is a trade asap. If he’s given either of the franchise tags, he’d be a fool not to sign it because he’s not going to make that on the market, so that wouldn’t give you any time to test the free agent waters (for the bucs), and I don’t think you’ll be able to trade him with that price tag.

I like Dalton (I would do it). I don’t think you’ll be able to trade for Carr until after the free agents have landed, and then you would risk not having anyone under center. So I would be hardcore on working out a trade for Dalton ASAP. I don’t really understand why Joe hates Dalton. I think he’s as mobile as Jameis is and his numbers are slightly better. IMO, he’s smarter as well. I know he’s 32, but he probably 6-7 good years left. Go Bucs!!

  13. buc53 Says:

That’s asinine. Winston isn’t signing anywhere unless he’s gonna start, and no team is going to sing him for that much money to ride the pine.

  14. Marine Buc Says:

The Steelers have $6.1 million available under the salary cap. How in the wide world of sports do they plan on signing Winston ($20-$30 million) and keep him as a backup? Does King ever think before he speaks? Does he even do 5 minutes of research in between chili dogs? I’m so tired of these idiotic talking heads just throwing up crap that makes absolutely zero sense.

  15. Aceofaerospace Says:

    Mr Pick-6’s reputation precedes him.

  16. WyldKat Says:

Don’t worry, Jameis’ throws ended up all over the place too; not limited to 100 yards of field and BOTH end zones.

  17. miken Says:

@marinebuc… they don’t plan on spending 20to 30 million, that’s the whole point. No one outside of tampa is planning on that. Pitt wants him on a back up for like 2 years at around 12 to 14 per plus incentives. Do you know how pissed big ben would be? Would be funny.

  18. DoooshLaRue Says:

Well, the upside for JayMiss, if the Pittsburgh thing happened would be that since they play at Heinz Field…… he would have all the ketchup needed to make those 2-3 Ws he would get them a lot tastier.

  19. Marine Buc Says:

    @ miken

I agree. But I still don’t see the Steelers being able to pay $12-$14 million. They have $6.1 million to spend and 15 free agents to re-sign plus their draftees ($6-$8 million). It’s an idiotic suggestion by King. He obviously didn’t even consider reality when he made this comment.

  20. miken Says:

@marine… its probably not a suggestion by king, most likely something passed on to him. The steelers know they have a great team but 2 back ups that can’t play and Big ben who is old and hurt so they are going to get a viable back up… those cost money . Fitzmagic is your average back up and he makes 8mil in 2020 so thats about as cheap as they can get it.

  21. Show me the TDs Says:

Mike.Tomlin would not put up with Jameis’ TOs. This would be a match made in hell.

  22. NPRSageBoy. Says:

In Pittsburgh there would zero tolerance for JayMiss’ patented turnover show.

They would the Steel Curtain on him quickly

    Peace, out

  23. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

A lot of Buc fans would agree with King on Winston going to Pittsburg in 2020.
    A relly good idea!

  24. BigHog Says:

Mr. 5,000 appreciates the hate, as it fuels the intensity of his off-season work out program, which he is working as I speak! You keep hating, while he works even harder! Mr. 5,000 a back up….don’t make me laugh..ha ha ha ha ha

  25. Hodad Says:

Wow Joe he’d make a better BACK UP then Rudolf. That’s about right. Here’s a better one then Kings pairing. He goes to his favorite childhood team as Wentz’s back up. As a back up for either team, chances are he’d get a shot to start do to the fact both QB’s have missed time do to injury. You heard it from Hodad, JW, CW’s back up next year.

  26. Marine Buc Says:

    @ miken

I just don’t see Winston signing a 2 year deal for $6-$8 million per. And I don’t believe the Steelers will have the cap space to pull it off. Again – $6.1 million in cap space and 15 free agents to re-sign. However, time will tell. If Winston is not wanted back in Tampa and no other teams want him as a starter then I guess he will have no choice but to take the backup QB contract money.

I’m betting on Winston being tagged (transition or franchise) and coming back for one more roller coaster ride with the Bucs.

  27. Pewter power Says:

Man you freaking writers….. NFL doesn’t care because the talk keeps the league relevant but it’s the fans who suffer from this nonsense from people who cover the league for so long. The general manager said big ben is in their plans for years to come so pay a starter, starter money to be a backup lol and when are these interceptions gonna happen if he’s sitting the bench?

Yea we should believe you guys have more common sense than fans because you write about it. At least it takes the heat off of joe for his nonsensical comment comparing winston interceptions in 2019 to a guy who retired before the superbowl era began….yea fans cant make this stuff up and they dont need to because the writers are full of it

  28. chris L Says:

i know we post stuff about the bucs but peter king is truly an idiot.

  29. Brandon Says:

Way better chance of Marcus Mariota going to Pissburgh as a backup than Winston.

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Hmmm, let’s see. Behind Door A we have Jameis signing with the Bucs as their starting QB for transition tag money ($22-$24 mil). Behind Door B we have Jameis signing with the Steelers as their backup QB for $6-$8 mil. And behind Door C we have … tada … Chucky laughing his ass off & waving Derek Carr as trade-bait.

Wow, this really is silly season. Only about 3 weeks until FA starts. Thank heaven.

  31. Lvbuc Says:

    MM TO Pittsburg makes sense

  32. stravenite Says:

Whether to the Steelers or not, this is further feedback on what the rest of the NFL values JW at, and not a $30m QB. The Bucs will be bidding against themselves as there seems to be little external interest.

If Licht does bring JW back I would suggest the Glazers stipulate if it fails then he is out !, along with JW.

Make someone accountable for 2020, no more excuses !

  33. Stevebobucsfan Says:

I am thinking Arians will give Jameis a chance to be the starter this season. But I am willing to bet my last few dollars that Arians will not hesitate to bench him or even trade him( depending on how the Bucs sign him ) if he start to make bad decisions. Arians will have a QB on staff to replace Jameis this season for sure. All I want is to see the Bucs win. I want to see Jameis back but if it’s the same thing the first 3 or 4 games then there should be no hesitation to get rid of him. 5 years, 2nd year under Arians there should be no more excuses

  34. Buc1987 Says:

He said as a back up…..he also said “get him ready to conditionally succeed Ben Roethlisberger”

    Posters….. conveniently…leave that last part out….

  35. Pick6King Says:

How revealing is it that a QB who threw for 5000 yards is looked upon as a backup, a reclamation project, a potential bust. He’s only considered a starter by the “brain trust” in Tampa. The fate of this franchise will be determined in a few weeks. Time for Jamoist to seek life elsewhere. Go Bucs!!!

  36. Craig Says:

No body is going to pay Jameis what he thinks he should be paid.

Sign all the defense first and then transition tag Jameis. That way he can see who wants him and for how much. Maybe he will be able to read the writing on the wall now that his eyes got fixed.

Most of the world will only know Jameis by the Sports Illustrated blurb. He has the lowest QB rating on the market, lowest win/loss ration and SI said his carelessness is too much to overcome.

Make sure you have a back up that is ready if you sign Jameis, his faults are more numerous than his positives.

  37. Stevebobucsfan Says:

People sorry to tell you this buy, Jameis is back next season and the Bucs win be winners. All who hate Jameis best find a new team next season. Go to the dolphins they’re a up and coming team

  38. Jean Lafitte Says:

    moderation

  39. Nick2 Says:

And in a “this could happen just as easily” world Peter King thinks Michael Vick and Vince Lombardi would be a great fit together.

  40. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Don’t forget the TO part……

  41. WestChap Says:

The Steelers bench doesn’t seem quite far enough… but, ok, I’m in. I’ll kick in to help with the moving van, just get him out of here already.

  42. westernbuc Says:

Jameis would be perfect in Pittsburgh but he isn’t going in as a backup. The only way Jameis doesn’t have a starting job is if the Bucs, Bears, Colts, Chargers, Patriots, Redskins, Broncos, Raiders, Titans, and Jaguars all decide they have a better option.

All of those teams are unsettled at quarterback to some extent or another. You can argue Brady, Rivers, and Tannehill are better options. But if the Bucs move on, Jameis will have a job.

Peter King doesn’t even like football. He uses his platform to make lazy attacks on the president, whine about players health, and brag about hipster beers he’s been guzzling. I’m sick of him

  43. ancientasbuc Says:

Does anyone really think King is newsworthy anymore? Not here. Plugged in national guys are Shefter, Rappaport, and Mortenson on a limited basis. King just doesn’t go to work anymore. He sits at home, reads others work and then writes an opinion. Sad.
