“That’s Why We Did A One-Year Contract”

Drew Rosenhaus talks Shaq Barrett

NFL super agent Drew Rosenhaus was talking to JoeBucsFan.com today about his star free-agent-to-be, league sacks leader Shaq Barrett.

Joe caught up to Rosenhaus at Tropicana Field as practices for the East-West Shrine Game kicked off this afternoon.

Joe asked Rosenhaus whether he thought Shaq was a double-digit-sack guy before he signed with the Bucs in March. Rosenhaus said that’s exactly why Shaq is looking for another contract 10 months later.

“I’ve always had the highest regard for him. So that’s why we did a one-year contract. I knew he had it in him,” Rosenhaus said.

But the agent got tight-lipped when the subject of Shaq’s next deal arose.

“I don’t have any comment about Shaq other than he had a great, great season, obviously. We’re excited about him leading the league in sacks and having a Pro Bowl year but really don’t have any comment on any negotiations.”

What’s clear is the Bucs will have to break the bank for Shaq, far more than the $4 million base salary he earned in 2019. Talented and proven 27-year-old pass rushers always get paid.

Rosenhaus definitely is a top seller for his clients and loves the free advertising that the joes are giving for shaq; wonder if drew sells out jameis to get shaq a better deal

  2. Rodney Munch Says:

Drew Rosenhaus… the man who ruined the once promising career of Errict Rhett by telling him he was the next Emmitt Smith and convincing him to hold out…

  3. This Guy Says:

Drew is always out to get the top $$$ for his client’s, as a fan I do not always appreciate that. On the flip side, players seem to love working with him.

  4. LordCornelius Says:

    Pay the man.

  5. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

LOL Joe meets Drew in person and he goes from “oily” to “NFL super agent!”

  6. BrianBucs Says:

Bucs need to do whatever they can to keep their front 7 together.
Sign a cheaper QB that doesn’t turn the ball over and cost your team games

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Lord C … Agree 100%; pay the man. BUT I’m wary of Rosenhaus just like Rod is. Bucs desperately need our FAs to be ‘reasonable’ in their contract negotiations. That’s NOT Rosenhaus’ strong-suit from what I’ve read in the past.

As for Shaq, Spotrac estimates his Market Value at $15.7 mil per year. Round numbers work for me, so $16 mil annually for 4-years with 2-years guaranteed seems ‘reasonable’. Somehow I doubt that Rosenhaus would agree. HOPEFULLY Shaq doesn’t let his agent steer him in a bad direction (ie, highest bidder or nothing).

  8. Defense Rules Says:

BTW, can’t believe that Rosenhaus would say that he & Shaq “really don’t have any comment on any negotiations.” The people have a right to know. Ya right.

    What Brian Just said.

Dusthy interesting thought but how do we know it won’t go the other way.

Right now Shaq is the hot commodity…he would likely be the one getting sold out if Rosenhaus double deals with Licht.

Rosenhaus get his guys their money but man did he mess up T.O. career at the end. If there wasnt already enough TO hate Rosenhaus managed to work up even some more.

  10. JimmyJack Says:

Doesn’t seem like much of a negotiation to me. Dude just got more sacks then anybody in the league. He gonna want and deserves top dollar for it. That’s what we gotta pay him. Only question is how much guarantee does he want. Licht ain’t letting him walk. Won’t happen. Well give him a fat payday. We don’t use the tag around here either. Doubt they will make an exception for Shaq. Only way he gets slapped with the tag is if they really hardball the negotiation. But they aren’t gonna want the tag so I expect a deal worked out before training camp.

Doesn’t seem like much of a negotiation to me.”

Correct, he’s just likely to get franchised after Winston gets a multi-year “bridge” deal.

  12. T REX Says:

When did ONE YEAR become “proven”?

I’m not saying he can’t do it again but this franchise has a long history of paying one year wonders.

  13. T REX Says:

And for the record, I would pay Barrett before Winston. Winston should get the leftovers and if he doesn’t like it…see ya.

  14. JimmyJack Says:

Rodney my guess is their goal is to sign Shaq to a multi-year deal. Don’t think it’s a coincidence Jason has never used a tag before. He knows players hate them tags. Could of used it last year for Donovan. Seems like both sides met in the middle on a short term contract. I think they get a multi-year done here.

  15. Buc50 Says:

When you put up that many sacks, they consider you proven. Pay the man.

    ————————————–
being saying all along…. this is the simplest and best solution this year for the Bucs.
Use most of $93 million for defense ….. draft offence linemen… and QB….fine a cheap descent free agent QB…. bridgewater type… AND get rid of JW.
Is this going to happen ??? NOOOOOO

    BA = LovieS 2.0

  17. Davenport Says:

Careful …. The system made him great. It’s better to be a big fish in this small pond. Don’t overplay your hand!

  18. jjbucfan Says:

JJ- should have used it on DS 76, that is all I will say about that

  19. Noles Says:

Saw Rosenhaus at Miami airport on the phone…. it was funny & cool.. but with all the change $ this guy makes & he had a briefcase bag that looked like an Tattered POS… Would it kill this guy to hit a TUMI store, my lord it was awful…. if I walked into an exec mtg w a rep and a big like that… LOL… thought the sales guys would get a kick out of that…

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Or would Team Rosenhaus & Barrett care enough about the fans to simply keep them informed in a matter that doesn’t compromise negotiations while still recognizing that the fans matter?

  21. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

16M/yr is a huge raise for Strip-Shaq Barrett. I don’t think he’s a guy that wants to squeeze every last dime out of this contract. I think he is kind of amazed himself and obviously pumped that he going to get paid that much.
I just don’t see him leaving Tampa, the team that gave him his chance, for another 1-2 M/yr somewhere else. He just seems like a humble and loyal guy. I 100% think he will be back.

  22. 813bucboi Says:

    pay him….

him and JPP need to be signed at the same time, in the same room….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  23. Ineffable Dullard Repairman Says:

Guess it depends on how much Shaq “loves” the Tampa Bay Area, like he claims. Top FA’s go in two directions; getting the most they can, or by willing to play for a little less to fulfill their version of happiness and contentment.
As the old saying goes, “there’s more to life than money,” unless the acquisition of wealth is your life’s version of happiness– the latter being the Rosenhaus credo.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Alaskan

I agree……it’s pretty easy to see that Shaq is not into himself…..the only wild card in this is his agent…….

If the team can’t take a chance on a guy like this….then who could they?

  25. Pewter power Says:

Fans have no problem with player salaries when they are top producers. If Winston didnt have that high turnover ratio no one would care what kind of money he was asking for fans would say the same thing pay the man. No one is questioning whether he should get paid or how much too bad Winston doesn’t realize why he hadn’t gotten his money yet

  26. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … Fans are ‘pawns’ to these agents AND to Bucs’ management IMO, pawns who if ‘used properly’ MIGHT sway negotiations to some degree. Ever wonder why BA said some of the things he did? You know, like ‘If he can win with this QB he can win with any QB’? Was it just a slip of the tongue, or was it posturing? With millions of $$$ at stake (like in last year’s GMC ‘negotiations’?) I just don’t put anything past anyone anymore.

  27. lars tater salad Says:

When did ONE YEAR become “proven”?

He is more proven than any pass rusher that didn’t get 19 1/2 sacks this year. He bet on himself and won and that is the kind of player the bucs desperately need. Add JPP to that list as well.

  28. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

DR that quote is being very misused and misinterpreted because of it. BA said,”if we could win with this one we could win with another.” How many others? 1,2, or 10? It doesn’t matter but he definitely doesn’t say he could win with ANY other QB. That would be saying Winston is the worst QB in the world. I see a lot of people repeating this quote incorrectly.
I think BA wants JW back but not at 30M. He wants to let Jameis know he isn’t irreplaceable and the team has the leverage. He probably also wants to turn off anyone else who might be considering the JW train ride.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    T REX Says
“When did ONE YEAR become “proven”?

I’m not saying he can’t do it again but this franchise has a long history of paying one year wonders.”

Yes, but usually it is a player who has that one good year for someone else…that’s why I don’t want Bridgewater.

  30. JimmyJack Says:

Alaskan & Defense Rules…….That’s not even the quote. The word “if” was never said. I heard on a podcast somewhere that Todd Stoud and that ESPN girl misquoted it. You can go back and listen to the interview. He never used the word if……..and he sentence after that quote explained how our defense was good enough to win some games for us. Meaning we don’t need a hero at QB to win.

Funny the word if really changes the context of the quote. I don’t use Twitter(thats where I think they misquoted) so I never saw it quoted but I darn sure hope they had a retraction bthat they got the quote wrong.

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

Prediction…..Shaq definitely gets resigned one way or another!

    JW…probably…no predictions from me here.

As for only one year’s worth of proof…I understand the concern but that’s the league. And in fairness to Shaq he did show this potential in Denver but he was stuck behind some of the biggest stud LB’s in the league.

IE While it looks like he had a “career” year its only because he never had the opportunity in Denver. When he did get on the field he played well.

BTW just curious what people expect for all this money? I do not see another 19 sack year but if JPP plays I certainly see 10 sacks.

  32. Aaron Says:

Ok so step 1 we move on from JW to get a “cheaper” QB that doesn’t turn the ball over so that we can keep our front 7 together.

Here is your list of 2020 FA QBs.

Matt Moore – Step 1 approved
Chase Daniel – Step 1 approved
Case Keenum – Step 1 approved
Chad Henne – Step 1 approved
Drew Stanton – Step 1 approved
Colt McCoy – Step 1 approved
Marcus Mariota – See Jameis Winston
Drew Brees – not coming here and is not cheap
Tom Brady – not coming here and is not cheap
    Eli Manning
    Philip Rivers
Teddy Bridgewater – not coming here and is not cheap
Jameis Winston – we don’t want him here…he sucks
Ryan Tannehill – not coming here and is not cheap

Step #2 – BA scrapes his entire offensive philosophy so we can accommodate this cheaper game manager QB. (In this scenario, I guess we are looking at Case Keenum)

Step #3 – Need Players to play in the new offense, or do we want this game manager QB throwing the ball 625 times without a running game. We better sign a RT that can run block (or draft one)…Draft a running back…BA will need to get his TE(s) involved more. No need to have 2 stud WRs…so trade one of ours. I would ask our center to take a pay cut or move on…

I say this mostly tongue and cheek.
If this is the team we want then the Glaciers should have fired BA and hired Ron Rivera. We are not going to get a cheap game manager QB – we absolutely may move on from JW but it will be for another QB that will also be $$$. Stating we need a game manager QB is like saying we need the Glaciers to sell the team. ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

Now that we understand that the Glaciers will never sell the team, and that BA is going to have an offense that throws the ball…and throws it a lot. Let’s discuss how this team with a salary cap will look next year. Go Bucs! Going to be fun all the way to the DRAFT!

  33. BigHog Says:

Brain and stpete: so you keep your front 7 on the defense and you switch from FAMOUS to some cheap QB who can’t throw for 2800 yards …but he has maybe 12 interceptions and a total of 20 turnovers for the year but your offense is only scoring 15 pts a game average…that’s no longer an explosive offense like you have with FAMOUS ….And at the end of the year, your record is 5 wins and 11 loses….also remember that crap QB will be in his first year in a new system!!! DRAFT BETTER..BRING IN BETTER TALENT…KEEP FAMOUS (and get behind your leader, pro-bowler, league leading 5,000 passing wizard FAMOUS FAMOUS FAMOUS and get ready for the year of the BUCS 2020!!

  34. JimmyJack Says:

St Pete…..Don’t forget it’s not just about sack totals. Shaq had a lot of QB hits this year. Forced a lot of fumbles. Had an INT defended a few passes. Had 19 TFLs!!

One of the Bucs analyst I heard the other day say we didn’t really have the backend players to run all the blitz packages Bowles wanted. With a new player or two they may add a few more wrinkles to the defensive game plan. Might ask Shaq to do other things. Remember he is a OLB not an exclusive passrusher. His sack numbers might go down but it could actually be better overall for the defense.

  35. tmaxcon Says:

Now that’s an agent willing to give a small market irrelevant franchise that has not won a meaningful game in 18 years a discount…. i feel good about the slim bag doing what’s best for glazers…. glazers have been used to bid up other teams for years

  36. Defense Rules Says:

Alaskan & JimmyJack … My apologies, you’re right. I found what I think was the first reporting on what was said (written by Rick Stroud) and here’s what the article said:

“He (BA) was asked if the team could win with another quarterback, and Arians replied: “With another quarterback? Oh yeah. If we can win with this one, we can definitely win with another one, too.’’

That’s the second pointed reference, including the first batch yesterday, moments after Winston’s overtime pick-six cost led to a loss to the Falcons.

He said yesterday Winston’s season included “so much good, and so much outright terrible,” which is a frank and accurate assessment.”

So the word ‘if’ was in there (in Stroud’s reporting) but NOT the word ‘any’ (BA used ‘with another one’ instead). Be careful who you read on the internet I guess is the lesson for me.

  37. Ship Thief Says:

    Pay Shaq.

    Then pay JPP.

Then take a step back and see how much money you still have to spend.

  38. Adrnagy Says:

Von Miller 19m. Cameron Jordan 17m chandler joners 16m and your saying shaq gets that type of money or more (reset the market) ? You crazy. These guys are Yrs proven. Shaq had a lot of support around him.

  39. Adrnagy Says:

And shaq is 28 yrs. you crazy.

  40. Ship Thief Says:

    Yup. I’m crazy.

But if they don’t pay him, then I hope they pay one of the other guys that got 19.5 sacks last year.

I’d be happy with any of them to be honest.

  41. T REX Says:

Von Miller has 100+ sacks…no way he gets Miller money.

  42. Adrnagy Says:

Easy … Licht will find one year wonders.

It’s like shaq did all 19.5 sacks with out vea, suh, jpp, blitzing scheme.

  43. JimmyJack Says:

Defense Rules……Just as soon after I wrote that I went to some NFL app and they had a freaking sound clip of the quote from Bruce. The quote never uses the word if yet the caption below the highlight directly misquotes him and uses the word if.

On the freaking official NFL site no less!!! What’s up with that?

What a freaking joke……and I bet nowhere nobody has the entire sentence as the quote cause it don’t spark as big of a reaction.

“Oh yeah. We can win with this one, we can defientally win with another one too cause we got a defense”

Why are local media misrepresenting our own team and why are you still able to look it up? The freaking guy didn’t edit and correct a mistake that makes our QB look bad. Think I just remembered why I don’t listen to that creep no more.

  44. Defense Rules Says:

Aaron … You kinda structured your argument to get the result you wanted (not that you’re the first one on JBF to ever do that of course).

For instance, Teddy Bridgewater. You say “not coming here and is not cheap”. Bridgewater’s Market Value is supposedly $20 mil for 2020. Do you think that the Saints will pay that for a backup QB who might not play a down for them? I’m sure that Teddy, like all NFL QBs, wants to start, and the Bucs MIGHT offer him the opportunity to do exactly that. IOW, don’t just dismiss it out of hand. And BTW, Bridgewater isn’t any more a ‘game manager QB’ than Drew Brees is (he did go 5-0 in Brees’ absence, is a career 65% passer, and sports a 22-12 career winning record).

For another, there are always TRADES. With so many QBs in this year’s draft (7 currently in the Top-100 prospects it looks like), some teams with ‘their less-than-ideal QB’ may be tempted to work a trade so they can draft one that they prefer more. For instance, IF Chucky is as unhappy with Derek Carr as some reports indicate, MAYBE he’d be interested in trading Carr for Winston (assuming we franchise tag him) THEN draft a QB that he might prefer more for the future. Carr is 39-55 over 6 years with what’s been a bad Raiders’ team & sports a 64% completion percentage (and BTW, he’s averaged 10 INTs per year over his career).

Only point being … you can’t just focus on ‘game manager QBs’ then move on to Step 2: BA scraps his whole offensive philosophy as a consequence. ‘More than one way to skin a cat’ as they say.

  45. MadMax Says:

Tonight we get the chance to see Delpit, Simmons and Chaisson….I want Simmons bad to use at safety but he’s going top 10. Delpit will probably be there at 14 if we decide to not go QB. If we decide we need pass rush more, then Chaisson will be there in the mid 20’s if we want to trade down.

Simmons may look and play like a LB more than safety, but I want him at Safety. If something happens and we lose JPP after a year or 2, he can replace him beside Shaq….that is unless he’s dominating as a safety.

  46. Defense Rules Says:

JimmyJack … Reporting just isn’t what it used to be I guess. Or maybe we just never knew how much ‘misquoting’ was going on.

In any event, the gist of what BA was saying is pretty clear. It seems to me that he was sending a message to Jameis & his agent. How they perceived that message I’m sure we’ll never know.

  47. Marine Buc Says:

I would use the transition tag on Shaq. Let another team over pay for him. Then collect two first round picks. Don’t get me wrong. I would love to keep the guy here but we can also draft A.J. Epenesa and re-sign Nassib and JPP and be just fine.

  48. MadMax Says:

Alright, sorry to go off topic but this thread will be hijacked anyway tonight since we need a space to bounce ideas, argue, whatever during the game lol

Heres a serious question. Tristan Wirfs or Jedrick Wills? I know Wills would be great at RT (his college position) and help our run game. Wirfs is a beast too but plays LT and we dont need that…sure he could work the RT position but…..Anyways Im seeing more mocks with us taking Wirfs and none taking Wills….am i missing something?

  49. MadMax Says:

Btw, Shaq is going to make a lot of money (per BA) and remain a Buc. He’s ours, you can count on it.

  50. JimmyJack Says:

MadMax…..I’m guessing those players play tonight. Do you mind sharing which schools they play for? I don’t follow college so I don’t know but will be watching tonight and would like to watch any possible draft prospects.

Poster 76 told me last night that the Clemson RB is a guy who could be on our radar. Will definitely be checking him out.

  51. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Ineffable

“Top FA’s go in two directions; getting the most they can, or by willing to play for a little less to fulfill their version of happiness and contentment.
As the old saying goes, “there’s more to life than money,” unless the acquisition of wealth is your life’s version of happiness”

Whoop there it is! And with all our “valuable” FA’s we’d better hope most of them have a value system that lines up with the second and understand the old Beatles classic..”Money Can’t Buy Me Love”.

  52. Jeff Says:

Bucs will let him walk. Mark the tape.

  53. Buczilla Says:

@Rodney Munch- I remember that Rhett fiasco. 😃 Hopefully we won’t have to go through that nonsense again.

  54. JimmyJack Says:

StPete…..Another part of the equation could possibly be that Shaq may realize he is a great fit for Todd Bowles system. Also the other lineman we got here(if they return) play a part and help him get better matchups.

Money is always a factor but so is image and your NFL stature. Their may be a desperate 4-3 team willing to pay Shaq more but it may be a bad situation for his production.

Shaq also might believe this defense is ready to assend and the the Bucs have a chance to contend next year. He might wanna be a big part of that. Some players care about that stuff, not all.

  55. stpetebucsfan Says:

    JJ

Totally agree. Shaq is smart and I believe he appreciates what Bowles and his defense did for his career.

If JPP signs I don’t see how Shaq doesn’t. The two of them together are true dynamic duo.

  56. BucEmUp Says:

I would franchise shaq to see if he can do.it again, and transition tag Jameis because nobody is going to break the bank on 30 ints. Trim some fat and resign the dline. Draft trenches, a corner and a rb

  57. MadMax Says:

@Jimmy, Simmons is a hybrid Safety/LB for clemson…Delpit is a safety for LSU, Chaisson is a DE for LSU…..sorry im late, just got back here….btw, Simmons is tearing it up!

  58. Buccaneerscotty Says:

He will get 16 million a year mark it……. all you pretend GM’s don’t know your butt from a hole in the ground! Including joe ! Y’all are never right! And don’t understand estimate how much B.A. love Teddy Bridgewater.

  59. stpetebucsfan Says:

This is the most excited I’ve been for a college game in a long time!

Clearly the two best teams by a large margin are playing each other.

Clearly the two best QB’s are facing off. I just hope this game is decided by an official or a fumble.

I’m glad Burrow is going to the Bengals…my cousins will be very happy and we keep him in another conference.

  60. stpetebucsfan Says:

Oops…lol..NOT decided by officials or fumbles

  61. Ndog Says:

    Bridgewater… right……..

  62. Ndog Says:

So much variety in the playcalling for both offenses tonight. You truly never know what is coming. Then us on the other hand our offense is easier to read than kindergartens book.

  63. Tattoodonny Says:

I’ve always had the highest regard for him. So that’s why we did a one-year contract. I knew he had it in him,” Rosenhaus said.

Really Greasy Drew, did you forget you were ready to sign a 2 year $8 million deal with the Bengals but they were worried over his shoulder? That’s why Tampa only gave him a 1 year deal. Wish now we offered the same deal but who knew? Surely not Drew!

  64. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Buccaneerscotty Arians may love Teddy but doesn’t mean he wants him. But continue your couch GM role though. Hate on everyone else when you just pulled something out of your own arse.

  65. Wesley Says:

I’m so jealous of Cincinnati, they get to draft a true franchise q.b. in Burrow. The kid has some serious accuracy and protects the ball.

  66. Rodney Munch Says:

Well that was another dull/boring game – just like everything from the NFL this past weekend. That was 3 days of games that weren’t really close.

  67. DoooshLaRue Says:

    We have variety on offense.
I’ll give JayMiss credit….. he varies his interceptions quite a bit.

    He’s an Entertainer!

    Nuthuggers rejoice!!!!

  68. catcard202 Says:

If you want to keep Shaq…You don’t let him reach the FA dinner bell!
So come to the table with a respectable offer, somewhere in the 4yr/$66M range…If that’s not enough for Drew, tag him & lock in 1 more prove it contract.

Drew doesn’t have leverage to milk the FO/Glazers, unless you give it to him.

  69. DoooshLaRue Says:

I wish Joe Burrow could have thrown at least 3 picks tonight.
It would have made the game much more exciting.

  70. TOM Says:

Screw Winson. Take care of the defensive players.
