Signing And Drafting A QB

January 21st, 2020

Bucs target?

Joe has never, ever heard of a vocal sect of a fanbase hollering themselves hoarse and stomping their feet all but demanding the team they allegedly root for to walk away from a guy who led the NFL in passing and touchdowns thrown.

Welcome to Tampa Bay! The proud former home to such quarterback stars as Jerry Golsteyn and Mike Glennon.

It seems the loud crowd just may get their wish, if you wish to believe the musings of a guy who has a direct pipeline to a heavy-hitter in the football wing at One Buc Palace.

J.C. Cornell, the founder of The Draft Network, twittered out last night the latest in the Bucs’ quarterback drama for 2020. Cornell said whispers in NFL circles are that the Bucs will have two new quarterbacks in a few weeks and neither is named “Jameis Winston.”

In an earlier Twitter, Cornell suggested the Bucs are looking to sign new Florida resident, free agent quarterback Philip Rivers, 38, to be a bridge quarterback until Eason is ready to assume the position.

Now if this is what the Bucs plan to do, and walk away from Jameis which Cornell stated last week was a “high possibility,” this makes sense. Rivers would keep the seat warm until Eason is ready.

Couple of things first: Rivers would have to want to come to Tampa Bay and Eason would have to be on the board when the Bucs select at No. 14 overall.

Is Eason that big of a prospect the Bucs would have to move up to get? The crowd at WalterFootball.com has Eason going in the second round. Dane Brugler of The Athletic has Eason going in the second round as well — to the Bucs.

If Eason is a guy the Bucs have targeted to eventually succeed Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is waiting for Eason to still be there at No. 45 a bit of a gamble?

guy who led the NFL in passing and touchdowns thrown.

Joe, you really need to pay a fact checker or editor to correct you. Jameis didn’t lead the league in TDs thrown. Maybe you were thinking of picks or pick sixes thrown…

  2. Aceofaerospace Says:

37 TDS thrown by Mr Pick-6.

  3. Aceofaerospace Says:

Oops 40 tds by Mr Pick-6.

I have watched every Play Off game objectively and have not seen a single

    and
    Jamyth

  5. D-Rome Says:

The Winston fluffers are going crazy because Phillip Rivers moved his family 450 miles away from Tampa. You guys do realize that Jacksonville, New Orleans, and Atlanta are closer to Destin then Tampa, right?

  6. 813bucboi Says:

bucs want to walk away from the QB that tossed 30 INTs….lol…

wouldnt mind eason in round 2…..wouldnt mind PR either…..

after seeing 30INTs, im ready for whatever….lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  7. Posey99 Says:

I called this to happen. Rivers makes sense as a bridge. This is an amazing year for free agent/ rookie quarterbacks. Foolish not to take advantage of it. Plus, Winston is most likely asking for too much and we have a d-line that just shut down all the NFL running backs that needs to get paid.

  8. miken Says:

Say what you want about Rivers, but there is no way he is signing with us.
The time to get Rivers was 5 years ago when they were offering him, Gordon and their pick for the overall #1.

  9. Bobby M. Says:

I think there’s a chance they tag/trade Winston….as well as trade Brate. If Rivers is the target, he’ll get a big signing bonus spread over a 3 yr contract. At this stage, all he cares about is guaranteed money. If there’s a cap hit down the road, not a big deal if Eason is on a late 1st or 2nd rd pick contract. They’ll have some dead money for one year, likely when Eason were to step in. If he looks capable, then they’ll open the check book the next year.

  10. tmaxcon Says:

You think the doug Williams curse was bad wait until the Jameis Christ Winston the true savior of the bays curse kicks in. Jameis is the only hope this franchise has no doubt glazers will screw this up…. the front office mistakes throughout the years the bucs have made make politicians look credible… bring the Culverhouse family back far more class and integrity than glazers

  11. 813bucboi Says:

    d-rome

    NO and ATL need QBs?…..

JAX idk….i think foles still have guaranteed money….

my unk is unfortunately an JW apologist…never thinks anything is JWs fault…..

he’s been at the skyway bridge since news broke rivers moved to FLA…..LOL….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  12. Bobby M. Says:

If we are truly considering grooming a young QB….the kid from Oklahoma could be on the radar as well. He’s also considered a 2nd rd pick.

The sign a vet/groom a rookie with Bruce Arians as the coach seems very possible. Arians has a knack for QBs….I would want his say on picking one and developing them.

  13. ClodHopper Says:

It’s silly to think all he has to do is cut his picks and he’s a great QB. The same gun slinging feature that gave Jameis his 30 picks is the same that gave him the 30tds and 5000 yards. If he cuts his picks in half the yards and tds will be cut in half too. That’s not a great qb!

  14. AllhailJPP Says:

Its the greatest news ever…and all the FSU fans can stfu and go away….hes gone..get over it..he sucks. the end. Marcus mariota still with more playoff appearances than crabman

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Rarely are we hearing the other side of the Winston decision and that is his character…..yes, he’s been good lately…..but he clearly did not live up to the standards I’m sure the Glazers expected of their #1 overall pick (Face of the Franchise)……many fans turned off by Winston……the media and NFL fans at large are turned off to some extent.
Here is our QB who not only can’t score endorsement deals but who’s picture can’t be displayed at the stadium.
Do the Glazers want to continue with this?

I realize we’re not looking for a priest and talent matters the most & I’m in that camp……but I thought this should be pointed out.

It’s the entire package…..not just the stats….$27-30 mil?

  16. mark2001 Says:

Makes sense to me…with the caveat that I’m not a “professional”. Ahh, if I had been one of an identical twin or triplet? But then, I wouldn’t wish that on the world.

Nothing like the reality TV show of the drama of a big game, or an overtime, and then having your hopes dashed and ground into a putrid mess, after a dagger in the spleen pick six. Who wouldn’t want that? The drama…the excitement. More Jameis… money is no object!

  17. PSL Bob Says:

IF moving on from Jameis is what the Bucs want to do, and IF Rivers has given the Bucs organization indication he would be willing to come here on a 1-2 yr contract, and IF Eason is someone BA thinks he can mold into a franchise QB, better grab him with your first pick in the draft, or be ready to move up a few spots in the 2nd round. That’s a lot of IFs. But, as I’ve said time and time again, with a few tweaks through the draft and FA, this team can make the playoffs in 2020 with or without Jameis.

  18. gotbbucs Says:

Wait, is it “Mr. Excitement” or “Mr. Entertainment”? I’m confused.

  20. ancientasbuc Says:

Again, I’m still looking for the Cornell scoop that lends any credibility to this report besides watching NFL Network about Rivers. Eason’s college career showed very little with a limited number of games. What story has he broken? I haven’t seen anything credible that Winston is not returning. Rivers is not an option at 38 years old and has almost the same results as Winston. Lots of yards, attempts, losing seasons, and interceptions. I’ll take Winston at 26, thanks.

  21. stravenite Says:

At last a sensible plan !, if we can make this happen then there will be a real sense of optimism going forward.
And BA dumps JW after he was given a chance, just did not take it, Luv it !

    GO BUCS

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Bobby

“At this stage, all he cares about is guaranteed money.”

Bobby I’m not sure I understand why all he would care about is money. He is worth EIGHTY MILLION $$$$$$$$$. Can you even imagine trying to spend that amount. Probably can’t nor can I…we are mere mortals…aka working people.

The $$$ at this point only matter in terms of ego..perhaps making more of you family wealthy…he does have nine kids and probably a bunch of cousins.

If someone offers me a Bern’s Filet Mignon I’d love it. Offer me one every night for a year…might grow weary. Enough is enough.

Here is my take…If you saw Rivers final presser..he did not say…I be ballin’…he did lay some blame for those 20 ints…which HE understands are unacceptable…on Charger desperation resulting in him forcing throws.
He did complete 66% of his passes 4600 yards…let any NFL QB just wail away without concern of int and he gets glowing offensive stats.

Rivers came across as a proud athlete who feels he can still play and is anxious to PROVE it. He appeared humble but confident and determined!

So ask this question. If you were a star QB who has already made his bones with 80 million in the bank..but a guy who still had something to prove…do we suppose BA’s offense…ME and Godwin as targets would be appealing?

Yeah he would see what we see…the need for a bruising RB to complement ROJO and one more stud OL at RT. We can get those in the draft.

I’m not pimping for Rivers or saying he’s the bridge…just that he’s not an outlandish possibility

As for Eason…watching that tape brought back memories. A QB who can spin it and throw tight spirals instead of those wobblers we’re used to seeing. And he actually hits receivers in stride…not a lot of ME or Godwin athletic catches on the highlight reel. I realize Washington didn’t have anybody close to ME or #12 but they didn’t need it with Eason’s ball placement.

He’s not Mahomes or Watson or Jackson…but he is QUICK on his feet unlike the ponderous one…he seems lot lighter on his feet that “blameless”.

Joe seems blinded by offensive stats. Ultimately I’m blinded by TO’s which clearly have contributed to a 28-42 record with three coaches over five years.

JW MAY blowup next year. I hope he does whether he plays for us or not..as long as he’s not in our division.

  23. bradinator Says:

I like Eason. He fits Arian’s sytem. Has a rocket arm, maybe one of the best in the draft class. Played in a pass happy, pro style offense (Leach’s Air Raid). That said he needs a year to sit and watch. Drafting him does NOT preclude us tagging Jameis for the next year. It does give us a back up plan if the turn overs continue. Although a veteran QB that is solid and doesn’t hurt us would probably do the trick a lot cheaper and allow us to keep that D-line together. John Lynch has the blueprint for that. A real good D-line and a QB that doesn’t kill them. Garappolo is the perfect example of why all those passing yards and TDs don’t matter as much as not turning the ball over. Priority for me is keeping that D-line together, maybe a veteran safety (if available) and draft some O-line and a mid round RB ( that kid from Illinois State looks sharp).

  24. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @TBBF

You have larger cojones than me bringing up “character” on this board.

I do agree with your post and that’ll probably bring me grief…but I’m still curious…did “blameless” ever apologize? I feel pretty sure he must have but I do not recall it.

  25. miken Says:

I just don’t see anyone but #3 as our qb next year. BA has 2 more years and someone like Rivers isn’t going to want to be in Tampa. BA and #3 have 2 more years together. Brees and Cam and Brady, Rivers are just pipe dreams

  26. sunshine Says:

Joe, PLEASE take off your rose colored glasses about Winston.. Does the nfl think Winston is great with low qb rating ? bucs have good receivers and after 5 yrs with 30 picks ,move on . I’m hoping for another trophy some day ,not an wait till next year

  27. NPRSageBoy. Says:

    Tampabaybucfan nailed it.

Look at the total package. This guy can’t buy an endorsement deal and is still on Goodell’s Bad Boy list. One more infraction and he’s suspended again; possibly long term. Is this the face of your franchise?

Stop focusing on the 30-30 and Pick -6 clubs, this is what’s become of the 2015 #1 pick?

Look at the total package and JayMiss has to go.

    Peace, out.

  28. mark2001 Says:

Like I said… Bruce.. one of many possibilities.

But forget it…rather pay 30 plus mil. for a guy that is one suspension away from a ignominious career ending incident, or possibly a guy that is more intent on balling than doing what is necessary to win football games. Nothing like a good reality show drama.

  29. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

    DO IT PLEASE, GLAzERS!!!!!!!

  30. bradinator Says:

Sorry I goofed in my previous post. Eason doesn’t play for Leach. I was thinking Wash St instead plain ol Wash. Eason does play in a pro set type offense as a pocket passer…just not for Leach, LOL! It’s early on the morning cut me some slack.

  31. LaMarcus Says:

Only JW will be THAT guy who leads the league and still be looking for a job because of ints

If ints were killing us…. why we have more wins with more turnovers? Last 2 years we went 5-11 with less ints and less turnovers?

  32. mark2001 Says:

Ints don’t kill you against teams that are as bad or worst than you are….they likely have as many or just can’t move the ball or stop anyone from moving the ball..especially in crunch time.

Against a good team? It is the stuff of disaster. And we want to do more than just beat teams equal or worse than us…don’t we?

Are we playing for a participation trophy or to compete for a championship? If you want the former, Jameis is your man. If you want to compete for a championship, those turnovers won’t cut it.

    @ St. Pete

Don’t get me wrong…..I still would support bringing JW back for another year….mainly just to be certain Arians can’t fix him.

I merely wanted to present the other side of the Glazers’ decision making process and make no mistake, this is their decision.

If they want to make a change, it would go something like this with Licht & Arians….”We’d like to move on from Winston….unless you object & if you do, we’d like to know how you plan to improve his game”

  36. LaMarcus Says:

We are built to pass happy. Hope the next qb is built to pass the ball

  37. Pewter power Says:

If you dont like a certain player a reporter can start any kind of rumor they want. Everyone thinks its smart to draft a quarterback duh but rivers? If dude moved his family to florida but 6 hours away from tampa I mean seriously why is this even news continuing to recycle it’s a true waste of time until march and hes scheduled to visit I wont follow the sheep on these unless hunts for stuff that never pans out year after year.

  38. 813bucboi Says:

so JW should lead the league in INTs every year because it helps us get 7wins instead of 5?….lol….

so if he threw 6INTs vs CAR in london we mightve won……lol….

you’re the dumbest JW nuthugger on JBF!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  39. Swampbuc Says:

    Everyone has their rumor.

Philiip Rivers makes less sense than Jameis, and Mike Glennon the Second is not coming to the Bucs.

Everything is rumored, Jameis long term, jameis tagged, jameis let go, Brady, whatever.

  40. Troy Says:

    Joe,

Calling us “alleged fans” is BS and you know it. Let me ask you a question Joe – what has all the yards and TD passes gotten us? Have we made the playoffs? Have we even sniffed the playoffs? It’s complete nonsense to call us “alleged fans” because we disagree with the viewpoint that Jameis can be fixed. 5 years of film tells me that he can’t be fixed. Your basing your speculation that he can be fixed on nothing more than speculation, not history.

  41. Cobraboy Says:

    gotbbucs Says:

Wait, is it “Mr. Excitement” or “Mr. Entertainment”? I’m confused.

    The confusion gets worse.

On numerous occasions he’s Mr. Excrement. 😉

Honestly, I don’t care of Jameis Christ goes or stays. Just stop with the dumba$$ turnovers.

  42. Craig Says:

Neither Jameis nor Rivers will be a long term QB solution for Tampa Bay.

Jameis had an audition year for becoming the 100 million dollar man. He blew it completely. Then he made it worse by saying he was ballin. Sucked all of the emotion out of half the crowd because it was insouciant.

I would rather have Rivers yelling his Rah-Rahs into the ear of a future QB than Jameis leading him down the merry road to lap dancing with Uber drivers.

The first three QBs to go will be:
    Burrow to Cincy

    Tua to Miami

    Herbert to Chargers

The only other first round possibility is NE taking Eason down the line.

The Bucs could trade down and get an extra second round shot if they want Eason badly enough.

That extra second round pick could make a lot of mileage. A good RT and a safety like Xavier MacKinney. That could make for an RB pick in the third and a few more O-line bodies in four and five.

    Adrian Killins in the sixth.

  43. Cobraboy Says:

Jacob Eason would look great in pewter & red.

I like the idea of a Rivers “bridge” with an Eason waiting in the wings. It’d be a breath of fresh air comp[ared to the daily drama with America’s I Be Ballin’ Turnover Machine…

Someone should ask Rivers how he’d like to throw to Evans and Godwin in an Air Arians offense…

  44. LaMarcus Says:

  45. Pugs&Bucs Says:

    You keep Jameis. Period.

And why is it all these jack-holes with INSIDER KNOWLEDGE all have polar opposite “knowledge.”

    I’ve read RIGHT HERE that:
🔷 One insider says Jameis is staying.
🔷 One insider says Jameis is gone.
🔷 Now the Bucs have targeted a QB in the draft that may or may not be there AND they have new starter who may or may not want to come here.

These are the same people who said Hillary had a 98% chance of winning the election.

  46. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

He only had the other team catch 30 picks…the other defense dropped at least 10 more so basically he threw 40 or more picks last year not to mention all the ones he threw up for evans to catch and then that bs TD pass/catch against the falcons, that was the epitome of a dumb pass and he was lucky as he!! that perriman came down with it. Hope jameis does good elsewhere like vinny did when he left but it is time to move to a new chapter

  47. LaMarcus Says:

Perhaps he may want to be a backup and earn a ring. Also, Tampa and Nashville are the same distance away from Destin. Perhaps he may want to play for the Titans if they move on from Tannehill for some reason. I’d like to see the Bucs go a different direction at QB from Jay-Miss but I think it’s a big stretch to think Rivers may come here while living 450 miles away from One Buc.

We can all agree we aren’t winning anything with Winston turning it over.

Go back to Winston’s 2nd yr at FSU(technically 3rd) and what did you see? Lot s of turn overs putting that team in a hole every game.

This isn’t going to suddenly disappear. 5 years wasted. No need to waste another year guys.

  61. LaMarcus Says:

    Bucsfire

Let me put it in elementary style. You need intelligence to understand it

Florida Gators had Priest(Tebow) throwing tds to murders( Hernandez) and they had accepted it while JW gets in trouble in a Uber and ppl wants him to go to jail…..I know it’s hard to comprehend because your probably from Gainesville as well.

Or just watch the documentary. Meyer should never be coach again

  62. D-Rome Says:

And why is it all these jack-holes with INSIDER KNOWLEDGE all have polar opposite “knowledge.”

    Pugs&Bucs,

The reason is because many of these reporters have different sources within One Buc. I was listening to Rick Stroud yesterday and he confirmed that even within One Buc the executives and people in decision making positions are split on Jameis. One reporter may speak with an inside source and find out that person wants to move on. Another reporter talks to another person and finds out they want to bring him back. The organization is just as split as the fan base which is why it’s absurd for the Winston fluffers to emphatically claim they are bringing him back.

  63. Jeagan1999 Says:

I’m all for Eason and a vet QB! Doesn’t have to be Rivers, but I’m down with this plan!

Let Winston go throw picks for some other team.

  64. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I don’t think giving up on the Jameis experiment is throwing away a draft pick, rather it gives us 30 million more dollars to spend on our own players and picking up a few more good free agents.

  65. BrianBucs Says:

    Sounds like a great plan!!!!!

Sending America’s Losing Turnover Machine packing, signing Rivers and drafting Eason would be the smartest thing that Licht has done for a while.

  67. Dapostman Says:

    Jameis Winston:

    first 8 games
    16TD/12INT*
    record 2-6
*8 picks were in 2 games both losses so when Winston threw 4 picks in the other 6 games his record was 2-4.

    last 8 games
    17TD/18INT
    record 5-3

How do you throw 6 more picks in 8 games and win 3 more of them?

  68. LaMarcus Says:

Anyone who is Florida Gator fan ….. you should have no opinion about football players. Just stfu and pray to Tebow

  73. BucsFIRE Says:

    LaMarcus,

Did you really state that someone needs “intelligence” to read your comments? Man, that is really fricking funny. You have an amazing ability to consistently create the worst written sentences in the history of man. Seriously, try to learn how to write, and then you can throw stones.

  74. Buczilla Says:

What’s wrong with keeping Jameis for a year to see if he can finally put it all together and drafting Eason? Admittedly, Jameis seems unable to rid himself of his buffoonish ways, but he makes enough incredible plays that you almost have to let him try right? Sign him to a one year “prove it” deal like we did with Shaq or just franchise him. He can’t go anywhere else unless we let him and if he doesn’t like the tag, who the hell cares? I seriously doubt that he would hold out.

Rivers is too damn old and I’d rather have Jameis than that dude. If Jameis fails again to become a franchise guy this year then Eason or whatever young QB we draft will have a year under his belt.

Crazy scenario. Bucs sign rivers and transition tag Winston.

  95. Sleepy903 Says:

This makes no sense and must be media negotiations w/ Wistons agent.

Why would we sign a bridge QB that will take 8 weeks to fully grasp the offense, a full year to get the chemistry down w/ the current WRs just to hand the reins over to a 2nd year QB that was allowed to sit for a year and have him take 8-10 weeks to get the offense down and another 16 weeks to get the chemistry w/ the current WR’s just to try and make the playoffs in 3 years putting us at the end of both BA and Licht contracts.

Which if we dont make the playoffs in that time span we would waste all the defensive talent that we signed back to allow a new coach and GM to come in draft his their own QB and clean house.

This would be the biggest waste of defensive talent ever but the funny thing is being a buccaneer fan for so long I can definitely see it happening.

Eason has the tools but nothing he has done in college suggest he can succeed in the NFL. He transferred from UGA. The QB that took over for him is rated lower than him due to height and arm strength concerns. He went to Washington in a weak Pac12 and never really did much to suggest he is an elite talent against subpar competition and this is what we are betting the farm on. It just doesnt make sense no matter how you try and spin it. Youre better off waiting for the 2021 QB prospects which will be highlighted by Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields. Pushing talented QB’s down in the 1st round of the draft like JT Daniels and possibly Jamie Newman depending on how his season goes.

  96. 541BucsFan Says:

I think most fans are up for more JW at the right price. Why not put a transition tag on him? Let him test the market? I have a suspicion no one would pay JW real franchise money. If the market sets a price at or lower than $20MM, I’d be willing to give him a multi-year deal with team opt outs. It would be in JW’s best interest as well.

  102. Aubpierce Says:

It’s pretty simple to me, you can keep all the players on the team if you let Winston walk or you can sign Winston and loose at least three players. If Winston didn’t throw thirty interception the Bucs defense would have been in the top tier. Just think what those thirty interception cost us in the time of possession. Most likely momentum would not have changed hands and the defense would not have wilted in the fourth quarter. Interception kill time of possession and loose games. Management make your choice.

Only JW will be THAT guy who leads the league and still be looking for a job because of ints

If ints were killing us…. why we have more wins with more turnovers? Last 2 years we went 5-11 with less ints and less turnovers?”

LaMarcus, yes we had more wins this year, 5 of which came in the last 8 games. That was when the defense began playing better against the pass. You may assume that it also meant those were better games for Jameis. Yet in the final 8 games, he threw 18 picks. His QBR was basically bipolar, it was over 100 in 3 games and WAY BELOW 100 in the other 5. In the first 8 games, he threw less picks, and had a QBR over 100 in 5 games. So somehow he played better when the rest of the team was playing worse.

So while the rest of the team was playing better, he actually played worse from a standpoint of ball security. This defense….this team has started to gel and prove it can be better. They deserve a QB who cares as much about ball security and winning as he does getting paid big money.

If he stays, he really needs to be willing to take a team-friendly deal that lets us keep the defense together. Not only is it best for the team, it’s good for him. Because WHEN he screws up and gets benched or put on the trade block, he will be easier to move as no one else is going to want him if they get stuck with having to pay him big money. That’s good for him because it gets him out of this unhealthy environment he’s created for himself here.

JW a bust? He holds the franchise record for yards and TDs, He is setting NFL records for all these things with no running game and no defense and no kickers. Of course he is also throwing INTs but before this year never threw more than 18. Rivers has thrown 20+ multiple times. 109. LordCornelius Says:

So much is probably dependent on some things we don’t know / wont’ know until later

#1 being how much $$ Winston and his camp think he is worth / should get from either the Bucs or another team

If Winston agent is holding firm at $30m, and Rivers could be had for like $20M or less, then this scenario starts to make sense, where Rivers + a R1 rookie QB = your best chance of keeping the defense together and freeing up major cap for the next 5 years by having very little $$ into the QB position compared to most teams.

  110. Bobby M. Says:

@Stpetebuc…..my point is Rivers isn’t overly concerned where his “annual salary” ranks, he likely knows he’ll never finish the contract especially if the entire plan is built on grooming a young QB. So in a veterans perspective, the team that offers the most guaranteed money is more appealing and I believe the Bucs can do that while still managing the cap to bring back the vets on defense and possibly upgrade the running game. The signing bonus can be spread over the terms of the deal from a cap perspective yet the player gets his money for the most part right up front or at a minimum guaranteed regardless of how much of the contract he fulfills. If we draft a young guy, then in yr 3 or 4 the Bucs will want to see him on the field and Rivers likely steps away or is cut. That’s where guaranteed money works for both sides.

Did Bucs fans try to burn down Mike Alstott’s house because he had fumblitis? No, and guess what, he found a way to cut down on his fumbles. Last Joe checked, a QB can find a way to cut down on picks. Joe doesn’t know any QB that throws for 5,000 yards in a season panhandling at an I-275 exit ramp for work. If you are that hung up about picks, then go get some two-bit Big Ten QB who can hand the ball off (nevermind the Bucs aren’t built for that) and good luck trying to score points much less win games. — Joe]

LOL- 813- first of all I only said week 10-14. You had started to come around a little and you started talking about Franchising him or a 1-2 year deal. So that is a change for you. I was kidding about Franks-nobody in their right mind would want him. Where you are wrong about the FSU crowd- is that you guys think we make excuses for Winstons 30. There are some that are not his fault but most, he shouldn’t have thrown. We all agree on that. The Gator crowd is the one making excuses for how and why he threw for 5100+ YARDS AND 33 TDs. He did this with the defenses knowing he was throwing almost every down. He said too bad, I’m doing it anyway. Also you only remember our Defense from the last 5 games- not the 11 prior when we couldn’t stop a nose bleed.

BTW- I’m just messin’ with, I think you are a good poster on JBF, we just disagree about Winston.

Curious as to your thoughts on Cam Akers v Perine.

  126. LordCornelius Says:

“It is extremely difficult for Joe to understand why anyone would want to get rid of a guy who produces at an elite level at the game’s most important position, picks or no picks”

You can’t separate “produces at an elite level” from “picks or no picks”

If Jameis threw for 5500 yards and 80 interceptions, you could keep making the same argument as above. At some point the interceptions absolutely negate the overall performance of the QB when weighing the total picture.

If a QB throws 30 interceptions in 2019, he better be throwing 60 TDs if we want to say he “produced at an elite level”. Especially when your QB’s turnovers equate to massive point totals given up by your defense that otherwise don’t happen.

Unless you think production = pure aggregate stat totals and nothing else.

When I think of production I think of QB efficiency / execution as it relates to winning games. And he was not “producing at an elite level” whatsoever in that category.

All that said I’m willing to ride or die one more year because I’ve made it this far and want to give the year 2 Arians crap a chance.

When you pick a player 1st overall, especially a QB, you are drafting for a generational talent. Jay-Miss isn’t special. He doesn’t have the acumen to throw to the right spots consistently. Yards thrown is overrated. Bucs needs to draft the QB that makes other GMs envy the Bucs. Jay-Miss isn’t that guy.

  129. T REX Says:

    JOE,
Winston has the most turnovers since entering the league. Turnover margin is the single biggest indicator for wins and losses. You can’t win consistently in this league turning it over. I don’t know what to tell you. We’ll never overcome those turnovers. It’s fact. You can recite a million stats and those 30 picks destroy all of them. You understand that right? All bull aside, you do understand that, right? He was on a prove it year in his 4th season to get his 5th year option picked up? FAIL. He was on a one year deal THIS year to get his big contract…how’d that go? RECORD FAIL. You want to give him another $30 mill to prove that he sucks at securing the football?

  130. gotbbucs Says:

    @813

You solved the most easily recognizable riddle to this whole joke of a conversation.
Winston continually took the game plan and crumpled it up and threw it on the ground within the first couple minutes of quite a few games by digging holes that a running game would struggle to get out of.
There is a ying and a yang to everything, most people want to just close their eyes and cling onto one or the other.

Did Winston throw for a lot of yards? Yes. Did he generate a lot of those yards by throwing endless picks to begin games? Yes.

    regarding akers vs perine:

imo, akers has more talent without a question….more speed and better vision….

but perine continued to get better and add to his game every year…..perine has good power and is a beast in the passing game…..great hands, great in pass pro and decent speed….

i think akers is the better back due to quickness and speed…..havent seen him catch much so i dont know about his hands…..

    i think akers is a 2nd round pick…..
    i think perine is a 3rd-4th round pick….

Personally, I can’t imagine how you pay Blameless and get a reasonable vet… but I guess Bruce could always lose a few FAs on D in hopes another Shaq or Nassib shake loose? Not jazzed about this year’s Rivers but I can live with Rivers/Eason… even if Blameless moves to LAC and wins a SB. We ALL need a change after the last 5 years.

Joe, just to put it out there, I’d pay for your content. I’m sure many others would too.

  141. Adrnagy Says:

    Win

    Whomever the qb

    Win win now.

  142. LaMarcus Says:

    Oh boy

813 with the “I think” mode you better do the opposite. He/she (813) is soft so u have to be careful

  143. Bill Gootee Says:

“Joe has never, ever heard of a vocal sect of a fanbase hollering themselves hoarse and stomping their feet all but demanding the team they allegedly root for to walk away from a guy who led the NFL in passing and touchdowns thrown.”

Bill has never seen a Bucs writer who continuously raves about yardage and TDs while ignoring (6) game costing bad decisions committed by the QB and the win/loss record that ensues.

  144. JustBucNwin Says:

Why Rivers? I would love to see Brady come to Tampa with all of our weapons that NE couldn’t offer and prove he can win w/o Bill! Draft Eason to sit behind Brady and take over after Brady wins #7 in Tampa!

  145. Anonymous Says:

I was the biggest JW fan after watching the playoffs we need a real qb its weird that when I watch JW Im nervous everytime he throws the ball. that’s not normal with that being said Rivers would not last behind this oline he is a statue

  146. jjbucfan Says:

813-Akers has the best hands on the team. Terry next. Akers is incredible. I watch all Gator games as well as Noles- Perine improved greatly and would love him if he lasts til 4th. I really believe we need at least 2 Offensive lineman in this years draft as well as a Free agent. My belief is the O-line the root of all the problems, that is….if the defense is truly fixed and Matt Gay improves like I hope he will. Even with the INTs, He still gave us a chance to win most games.

  147. SteveK Says:

This would be a welcome change at QB!

At what cost do the 5000 yards passing and 33 TDs come? Supposedly s $30
Million annual price tag AND the lost turnovers of all.

In this scenario, it costs the Bucs too much for adequate QB play.

It’s hilarious that turnovers are not considered in the overall evaluation- and there are more turnovers than touchdowns.

Draft a guy, sign an affordable vet, just don’t pay Winston top dollar to come out and suck in 2020. Seen that 5 seasons running. Tides of change!

  148. Pewter power Says:

    BucsFIRE

Season is over for the bucs so punctuation police is back on the scene deciding to critic everyone and ignore the article. No need to elaborate but if this is the way you’ll spend the offseason you are utterly useless….

  149. Jean Lafitte Says:

Eason has a huge arm and has a whole lot better college pass completion percentage after 4 years at 68.9% which is better than Winston’s 2 years at 64.6%. Now Jameis in the NFL after 5 seasons is only 61%. So it’s safe to assume Eason would probably be at 65% in the NFL. Plus Eason is not as turnover prone as Winston.

Pass on paying Winston 30+ mil. Bring in a bridge veteran QB for less and draft Eason.

  150. 813bucboi Says:

    jj

good to know about akers….imo, i dont think he last until the 3rd round….

like you i believe we should get 2 OL…T/G and G/C…..

    I think we need 2 DLs too….DT and DE/OLB…..

on JWs best days he’s a top5 QB….on his worst days he’s a bottom 3 QB….problem is he can be both in the same game….

an improved run along with being in year2 of BAs system should cut down on the INTs….hopefully…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

At one time you may have been placed in moderation for inappropriate posts. Don’t know without taking a chunk of time to do the research. Do know, unfortunately, the software with this website occasionally red flags people’s IP address for reasons unknown. Could be someone is using the same IP as someone who was really naughty, could be something on the software end that raises a red flag.

Unfortunately, not a programmer or can write code so not always sure why people’s posts are sometimes red-flagged.

Trust Joe on this: He digs peoples’ comments out of moderation all day long from 5 a.m. when one of the Joe’s is wide awake and finished walking his dog until the other Joe hits the rack past midnight and maybe not till 2 a.m. Just about round the clock.

It’s not fun and Joe sure wishes he didn’t have to. Truly do appreciate you being a regular. Seriously!

There is no personal vendetta or malicious censoring here against you. Honestly.

  160. Wesley Says:

Draft Eason and sign Dalton to a 2 yr deal.

  161. Wesley Says:

Joe – do you really trust Winston with the ball, especially with the game on the line?

  162. catcard202 Says:

The big question is, once Eason gets privately worked out…Will he sky-rocket out of Bucs range / #14?

Could see 5 QB’s taken before Bucs pick at #14. Which means a Top-10 Value at RT/DT/Edge/WR will probably be setting there for the taking vs rolling dice on # 5-6 QB on the board. (Which is a good reason to at least TAG JW3 before letting him walk – if your not 100% certain to get the QB of your liking in current draft slot.)

CIN / MIA / CAR / LAC / IND are all picking before Tampa. All need to solve their QB concerns, too. Plus NE / NO / TEN are at stages of QB uncertainty that making moves now, has to be considered.

Joe … All of your comments about moderation this PM have been really interesting. I don’t envy either of you your task of going through so many on a daily basis to determine which are OK & which are, shall we say, not-so-much OK. But on the other hand, it does mean that commenters are ‘involved’ in the various issues you’re bringing up, and that’s a very good thing I would think.

Having worked with computers now for 39 years, I have to believe that the folks writing your algorithms could take some of the load off you if they ‘massaged’ the algorithms a bit. And particularly if the company doing it is incorporating AI into their programs.

I know we don’t always agree on different ‘issues’, but I sincerely do appreciate the quality of the product that both of you turn out on your site. Hands down, it’s the best.

  165. mark2001 Says:

LaMarcus…Northwestern always plays my sons Badgers tough. Both are great schools. My son was in an elective class with Cephus a year ago. Will be interesting to see where he goes in the draft.

  166. Kord Says:

Oh Winston will probably stay, it would be so buccaneer of them to resign him for more years of mediocrity while every other team ditches they’re mistake ridden qbs

  169. Losing hope Says:

THANK GOD! i hope the reporting is true. Good riddance . As for Joe… Dude stop whining about jaymiss passing yards.WE DONT CARE!! 5yrs of the same thing – empty yards, a bunch of turnovers, and a bunch of Ls. Since ur so in love w jaymiss pack ur bags, shut down this site and go where ever the hell he goes. We don’t need a bunch of D licking for a qb that has given us NOTHING. you’re in the minority stop making urself look stupid.

  170. DalvinCookRules Says:

    1. Those complaining about Jameis’ interceptions the past 5 years only reveal their personal bias over the facts. Winston became an INT machine in 2019, not the prior 4 years to that. His INT rate was near the league average and was on a downtrend prior to 2019. That directly points the finger back to coaching/system which Im sure has been brought up numerous times.

    2. If you are going to draft a QB, why Eason? He performed well against weak competition but struggled mightily against good college defenses. He is worse than Winston at getting the ball out and staring down receivers. He is at best a career NFL backup.
