Shaq On Bucs QB

January 23rd, 2020

Influence or not?

Big decision for free agent sackmeister and current Bucs linebacker Shaq Barrett.

Joe was able to catch Shaq after Pro Bowl practice today at Orlando. Shaq is undecided if he will re-sign with the Bucs or test the free agent market. He’s expected to be a very rich young man in a few weeks and one would think he would want to play for a winner.

So Joe asked Shaq if his decision will be influenced by what the Bucs decide to do with Mr. Entertainment, America’s quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

“No,” Shaq said. “Absolutely not!”

So there you have it. Seems like Shaq doesn’t give a flip who barks signals for his next team so long as the Bucs show him the money.

  1. Buccernutter Says:

Should have asked him his opinion of jameis.

  2. ChanEpic Says:

Why should he? He’s proven, in my mind at least, that his side of he ball is solid and improving and that’ll happen regardless of who is QB. I LOVE THAT ATTITUDE. SIGN THIS MAN.

  3. K2 Says:

Players understand that it is a business. Publicly probably most will support Jameis, but I think most want what is best for the team….either way.

  4. mark2001 Says:

He knows he will play the same regardless…and even a good journeyman QB will give the Bucs almost the same chance for postseason play. But why would he want to get embroiled in the Jameis controversy?

  5. Jean Lafitte Says:

Because if he had predicated his decision to sign solely on Jameis he’d probably want to move on to a team with a proven winner.

  6. THETRUTH Says:

Well Shaq wants to be a Buc make that clear JOE , when you say he is undecided it sounds as if he doesn’t care to be here. A journalist should know you can’t expect him to say I’m a buc when he hasn’t signed yet but he has ALWAYS said he wants to be here.

  7. BigHog Says:

You got your answer so…quit trying to read between the lines…..palm readers!!!!

  8. rrsrq Says:

Less Jameis picks means less opportunities to get sacks. Gotta think about that Shaq, you may not be on the field as much with a QB that throws less picks, ijs. Sign them both

  9. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

    hope he doesn’t get hurt

  10. Defense Rules Says:

I really hope that Bucs’ management isn’t waffling as much as the media is regarding our UFAs. It really isn’t all that difficult. Bucs have XX amount of dollars to sign YY number of FAs. Set your priorities, determine your negotiation strategy and work it go from there. It’s not rocket science regardless of what the various media types seem to think.

  11. Dreghost Says:

@Joebucsfan it would be cool if you and the sage give us loyal listeners some nuggets on what’s the vibe around one but palace is about Jamies! And what would be a viable option at QB if he doesn’t sign

  12. 813bucboi Says:

    DR

    i agree….

bucs shouldnt make this harder than it really is…..

    defense is the biggest priority…..

but knowing my favorite franchise, they probably have JW at the top of the list….lol….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  13. Architek Says:

I don’t understand the value of the question presented to Shaq.

  14. Hodad Says:

That’s such a dumb question Joe. Did you think there was a chance in hell he’d say I’ll walk away from 20 plus million if they don’t sign Jameis? None of the other Buc players give a rats ass about what happens with Jameis either, I’ll save you the trouble of asking. As long as them, and their family are taken care of, Jameis is the least of their worries.

  15. martinii Says:

The tragedy as always is the team is a perineal loser and while money is a big factor professional pride plays a role also. It will be a factor so be prepared to open your wallets Glazers. My only concern is is Shaq, does he have more in the tank or was this a one year anomaly?

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Shaq “As long as the money they pay him doesn’t affect what I get…..I’m good”

@ Defense……you are correct about the strategy and approach being simple….
    Set Priorities
    Determine Negotiating Strategy
    Execute….

But….and here is the big but…..the players and their agents and other teams may have other ideas…..longer term contracts…..shorter term contracts…..more guaranteed money…..wanting to test the market. That’s when it can get complicated.

Do you go after the big fish first…..or do you sign players like Nassib, then JPP and then Shaq? Obviously, there is enough money to go that route….

Jason Licht will earn his paycheck this off-season…..

  17. chris L Says:

did he really yell like that or said it nicely?

  18. Dewey Selmon Says:

Kirk Cousins caught flak after 4 or 5 games this season, his own WR’s calling him out. The only player I have ever seen give Jameis anything close is Dotson in the middle of a play throw his hands up after pick #4. I really wonder if his teammates are tired of the turnovers?

  19. T REX Says:

Franchise Shaq and let Jameis walk…I don’t want to hear the WInston ppl crying about defense all yr again.

  20. Ndog Says:

I love how everyone is so sure Shaq is worthy of a ton of money. You guys ever heard of Wayne Haddix? I mean I love the guy as well but dang he produces for one season and now he should get a five year deal? Man that is a lot of faith and how bout all those offsides penalities (2nd most in the NFL). I guess as long as your name is not Jameis Winston you just get a boat load of cash regardless of one year, penalities, etc…

  21. SB Says:

    Are you Kidding me?
Nobody on the D likes Jameis!
Imagine busting your butt to give the ball back to the Offense and the next play he throws another pick and you have to strap up and get back out there Again!
I have watched the look on the D’s faces when this happens. They don’t look like they are ready to follow that ‘leader’

  22. Ineffable Dullard Repairman Says:

I wonder about some of you. Claims that he should get a top offer based on his position and just sign with the Bucs are ludicrous.
If any of you excelled at your job in your last contract year, why would you just blindly accept a good offer to remain with your previous employer when plenty more are in the offing?
And don’t respond about the great weather and the absence of a state income tax. If someone else offers you the farm you’d be a fool not to check out the property. If you were torn and had an affinity for your previous employer, you could confront him with something called a counteroffer. Ever hear of that?

  23. Ndog Says:

You wonder if guys are tired of the TOs?

Do you think maybe Jameis is tired of watching one yard runs up the middle, missed FGs/EPs, defense blowing leads left and right, players blowing their assignments all over the field, oline getting destroyed in two seconds, etc….

    Shall I go on?

  24. LaMarcus Says:

Oh yea it’s hard pass on a long term deal

What will happen after you paid get Shaq?

    Franchise tag or transition tag

  25. SB Says:

    Shall I go on?

LOL………Yes! Please go on defending the man with the most turnovers since he entered the league as a No. 1 overall pick. Please tell me again.

  26. 1sparkybuc Says:

He’s found a coach, a system, and a team that fits. He might never find that again if he moves on. Success is worth a little compromise. No doubt other teams will pay him more. Hopefully he wants something more than just the money. This dysfunctional team went 5-3 and actually had a winning streak when the defense stepped up. With a second year in a new system, this team can win.

  27. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

SB it goes both ways. How many times has the offense got the lead in the 4th just to watch the opposing offense March down the field with little resistance, sometimes in record time.
I’ve seen this far too often and especially in the last couple years. Don’t let your recency bias blind you to the fact that this defense has been doody for a good while.

  28. fernando diaz Says:

Pay the man!! He wants to stay here

  29. Adrnagy Says:

That’s a lot of money 18-20 m on one player. Like Winston 30m. Almost 50m on two players. Wow. Idk. Can both dominate like Khalil Mack or Russell Wilson ? If the answer is yes inside Bucs organization then do it. Imo I wouldn’t on shaq. I’ll sign jpp and draft someone. And sign a safety.
With Winston I’ll throw a contract 25m a yr. 3 yrs. if he says no I’ll slap the transition tag. And roll with Blaine.
    I would definitely draft
    1- dline
    2- oline
    3. Rb
    4. Dline.

  30. Nick2 Says:

I can see the defense turning the corner at the end of last year. Did anyone see Jameis turning the corner on INT’s??? If you did please let me know.

  31. Adrnagy Says:

Down the best 2 wr in the league. And broken thumb …. and coach is telling you I need to win. Oh and no running game. Go and win.

  32. Jean Lafitte Says:

So many times when the Bucs got to the 4th quarter the defense was completely spent from being on the field defending Jameis’s turnovers. So many games our defense was on the field more time than our offense.

  33. Adrnagy Says:

Of course …. gay couldn’t be straight.

  34. TSmitty3000 Says:

Well Blake Bortles being the QB(at the time) did not stop Calais Campbell from signing with the Jaguars for one reason. MONEY. Shaq is trying to get paid.

  35. Adrnagy Says:

What the hell are you talking about … your not listening. The defense sucked. Everyone including you knew. – pass the ball. Even when the defense was “good” they allow the falcons to march down the field in the second half and no stops. While shaq was celebrating is team record sacks Matt Ryan was shoving it down the defense throat. 3 possessions no stops.

  36. bucsfan951 Says:

NPUPPY might want to look at his boy winstons penalties this year… first among qbs!

but let me use some NPUPPY logic… who cares about the ints, i mean, penalties. he had 33 tds, i mean, 19.5 sacks.

  37. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Mark2001

    You nailed it.

“why would he want to get embroiled in the Jameis controversy?”

I would only add that you could substitute any unsigned Buc with that statement.
Why would they want to get involved. Talk about a no win situation.

Therefore I take these answers with a grain of salt. I realize that Joe HAS to ask the question…it’s his job…whether he believes he’ll get a real response or not.

  38. bucsfan951 Says:

Adrnagy: What are YOU talking about? March down the field with no stops in the second half? are we watching the same game? the falcons had 4 fgs in the second half. thats pretty good stops to me!

  39. Adrnagy Says:

Yeah something like that. I forgot. I just remember defense and gay lost us the game you feel me.

  40. Ndog Says:

Never once did I say who cares about the interceptions, I just state that they are not all on him. If you’re going to argue simply argue but don’t lie.

  41. Ndog Says:

Ok SB we also are the team with the most penalities, the worst special teams and one of the worst running games you don’t think that contributes to TOs? All of it adds up. I love the guys that say well if you take off 10 picks from Winston then you have to do the same for every other QB. No you don’t cause did their team have the most penalities, nope? Did their team have the worst special teams, nope? Did their team have a horrible running game, nope? Those things matter as they dictate situations, circumstances and REASONS why TOs are more likely to occur. Argue if you want it those are facts.

  42. Joe Says:

    Dreg:

@Joebucsfan it would be cool if you and the sage give us loyal listeners some nuggets on what’s the vibe around one but palace is about Jamies!

Joe has been writing about options ever since the season ended. One Buc Palace has been closed to media since Bruce Arians’ post-season presser. Won’t be back until underwear football begins.

Can tell you Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Cam Brate are big Jameis fans.

  43. bucsfan951 Says:

oh that’s right. only 10 are his fault and the other 20 are everyone else’s. Like the last pick 6 of 2019. Ball was tipped so it wasn’t his fault.

  44. Defense Rules Says:

@TBBF … “Jason Licht will earn his paycheck this off-season”. Yes he will, but I still wonder just how much ‘power’ he has in this administration. If BA says ‘This is what I want’, will Jason be in a position to say ‘No, I want to go in a different direction’. Personal belief? No, BA will get what he wants. I tend to think that’s exactly what happened last year. When I look at the FAs & draft selections, those have BA & TB written all over them … NOT JL.

Look at some of the FAs who were brought in on offense … Gabbert, Ellington, Watford, TJ Logan, all players who had a prior relationship with BA. Even some of the others, like Suh, came here because of his prior interactions with TB. Wouldn’t doubt that Barrett signed here because he saw the potential of TB’s defense for his skillset. And I’m convinced that the defensive draft selections had TB’s fingerprints all over them … speed, length, toughness, character, leadership, etc. I didn’t see those same characteristics in past selections like VHIII, MJ Stewart, etc. In any event, they’ve all got their work cut out for them right now.

  45. Ndog Says:

Again 951 I never said that so again you are simply lying. Now the tipped ball as I’ve said we will never know cause it changes both speed and direction of the ball.

  46. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Defense….

Oh, I don’t mean Licht will make the decisions……he’s earn his pay negotiating terms with the players BA & Bowles want….

  47. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Buc defenders know Jameis ain’t winning so they just want the $$$$

  48. Kord Says:

    Just pay this dude

  49. ClodHopper Says:

He probably cares more about what going on with JPP and Suh than he does Winston

  50. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

This is such a good example of Joe’s (almost creepy) obsession with this loser QB who is a huge reason we haven’t won since he’s been here!!! Dude, there are better QBs than him!! Everyone in the league understands why can’t you!! …. You have the chance to question someone that fans are TRULY excited about and you ask him about a guy that doesn’t even care if he’s here next year or not and seems to me is all about greed because he thinks he’s “balln” …. So dang stupid!!!

  51. Cobraboy Says:

Good Lord, why would anyone expect any different answer?

  52. GoldBoy Says:

Joe is absolutely obsessed with Winston. He can’t even interview a defensive player, the cause of all Jameis Winston’s turnovers, without bringing up his favorite person on earth. But we all know that Joe isn’t a Buccaneers fan, he’s just a Winston fan. Same as all the other nut huggers.

  53. WestChap Says:

We have to franchise Shaq… $16M is real money and he has to put 2 years together before you make a long term commitment at the kind of money 19.5 sacks commands. If we don’t tag he probably gets that long term deal at $18-20 from someone but that’s why he’s a perfect candidate for tag. Crazy thing is I’d prioritize JPP and Suh over Shaq but I’d love to have all 3 back if possible. I’m not sure why JW is even mentioned to him… irrelevant.

  54. Bird Says:

[No one is forcing you to read one word on this site. All you do is b!tch about this site. For years. Give Joe a good reason why he shouldn’t click the goodbye button on your arse and put you out of your misery? But of course, you want Joe to write stories that would kill his business. Boy, folks are just lining up for Joe to produce technical stories on players largely irrelevant to most fans. There are, however, other lesser sites that will write those stories. Go knock yourself out. Joe’s OK with people hounding him but even Joe has his limits. Pop off one more time a-hole and it will be your last comment here. And no, Joe doesn’t threaten. Cool? — Joe]

  55. Jean Lafitte Says:

Just to put this Jameis Winston 5000 yard badge of honor to bed in comparison to Phillip Rivers. Phillip Rivers had more completions on lesser attempts than Jameis and finished 31 yards less a game on average.

    31 yards a game ..that’s it

Although Rivers had 35 less passing attempts than Jameis he also finished with 10 more completions than Jameis.

I conclude that Phillip Rivers can’t be worse than Jameis but a little more accurate.

  56. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Man I love this notion that Jameis Winston is just the most unlucky QB in the world.

Jameis “I am balling” Winston Imagine saying that after he pisses a game away before ANYONE says matt gay he had the ball in OT.

Also to the people saying that “not all the turnovers are his fault” NO SH!T it’s just when you factor everything in no QB’s turnovers are all on him. it’s just when comparing with every other NFL starter when accounting for this Winston would still lead….by a lot

Go watch this one buccaneer youtubers video that came out about Jameis last week named set the edge. he breaks it down. honestly one thing these inept FSU homers keep forgetting is the team that wins the turnover battle wins the game 78% of the time. you cannot win the turnover battle with winston.

  57. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Also to Turn the ball over like this in the NFL is absolutely inexcusable. It has never been easier to pass then it is right now. so when people bring up Farve, Manning and for some reason Tarkenton gets brought up. back when all those guys were playing DBs had free reign. they do not anymore. there is no reason any QB should have as many bone headed turnovers as america’s groper does.

  58. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Also to Turn the ball over like this in the NFL is absolutely inexcusable. It has never been easier to pass then it is right now. so when people bring up Farve, Manning and for some reason Tarkenton gets brought up. back when all those guys were playing DBs had free reign. they do not anymore. there is no reason any QB should have as many bone headed turnovers as Mr Entertainment does…it truly causes one to ponder why we are not allowed to refer to Jameis by what he is?

  59. Ndog Says:

I cannot for the life of me understand the absolute distain for our QB when literally all he has done is give everything he has to this team, city and organization. Then on top of that he leads us in every single category all-time in terms of passing. Then throw in the fact that his coaches have been trash (Lovie= really, Koetter=in over his head) and now he finally gets a real coaching staff and a chance to play with at least a decent defense and everyone seems to want him gone. I mean doesn’t he deserve the opportunity to show what he can do with anything more than half a team? I mean look at this past year when we had Godwin and the defense wasn’t trash we won four in a row. Them Jameis broke his thumb and all but one WR went down and we lost. But do you people seriously not want to see our offense from last year with our defense if it really is improved? I mean if you truly believe this defense is fixed why wouldn’t you want to see what we could do?

  60. Jokers Says:

And the idiotic nick name for a bad QB gets even longer. Man the man crush you guys have on Winston is nuts

  61. Sport Says:

It’s simple and Joe has explained himself about a gazzilion times. He writes about what interests him. What interests him is 2-fold, as a fan and as a businessman. As fan, that goes damn near anywhere, as a biz man, it’s happy advertisers Which means, more eyeballs and clicks. JW moves the needle like no other in these parts. That goes for any QB, especially one as maddening as JW.

Need an example of our QB driving people to madness? See NDog. The stamina on that dog is downright impressive!

    In BA I Trust!

  62. Wesley Says:

Even he knows we have to move on from JW.

  63. Mike Johnson Says:

Shaq got the right attitude. Jameis can speak for Jameis. Shaq say, Show Me the Money baby! And I don’t blame him one iota. Unless you under contract? Allegiance/Loyalty is out the window. Pay the Man, please.

  64. Buczilla Says:

Pay this dude! Don’t overpay though. He shouldn’t get Khalil Mack money because of one good year. If he’s looking for that then put the non-exclusive tag on him.

  65. SB Says:

    Is it a Full Moon?

  66. SteelStudBuc Says:

    @Joe

I think the biggest reason why so many people on your site have zero respect for Jameis is the pedestal you’ve put him on.

The long nickname that basically says you love how your boys butt smells, if you know what I’m saying. It’s pretty sad, pathetic and downright disrespectful to any intelligent fan who actually want to read good content, but are left feeling like trailer park newspaper material instead.

  67. SB Says:

Bird………You should tread lightly on those talons.

  68. Joe Says:

    SteelStudBuc:

Imagine what Joe thinks of the people who can’t wait to run off the best quarterback this franchise has ever had (not named “Steve Young”) who at 26 has accomplished in the NFL things very few quarterbacks have done. So Joe is supposed to pander? There’s another Bucs site that does just that.

And given how this franchise is best known for giving up on quarterbacks too soon (Joe can think of four who got their teams to a conference title, three of which won rings *after* leaving the Bucs), folks ought to be shatting their pants at what might happen if Jameis leaves.

  69. SteveK Says:

    Joe and fans,

The turnover margin is the bottom line in the decision to not bring Jameis back. He won’t break the turnover streak.

Teams coax and dare the Bucs to throw bc they know every time Jameis reaches back he will fire an INT at more than double the league average rate. Couple that with 46 sacks, 12 fumbles-5 lost, and all the INTs dropped/called back with a penalty.

It’s the body of work in five years and it culminated in a storybook Jekyll and Hyde season. Jameis must be willing to take a prove it deal, or he can walk and get paid by a team that will suck because they allocate too many resources (salary cap) and they will lose by turnovers. But, don’t worry it will be entertaining to see so many touchdowns… for both the offense and defense.

  70. Bird Says:

    Joe who called me a-hole

Steelstud buc makes the same point
Never called you names like to just did in return
I joke about nicknames for your love obsession for One player that seems to be this superhero that is clearly far from it (but that is pretty obvious to everyone and people comment on it all the time). People comment which joe is writing which article all the time its so obvious.

And not attacking site Like you claim Other joe and ira Dont make excuse after excuse for #3. They tell it like it is. JaMeis has a bad game , they are honest about it and do not call it a “mixed bag”. Jameis plays good and they write that he looks like the jameis overall number one pick that we wanted all along. While you write “where are all the haters at? “Again name calling like i told you so . I know you are but what am i .. For example ,the one article that other joe wrote this morning on jameis and barrett is right on.

And Why so thin skinned. You called me an ahole and i think its funny you got so worked up over it

And if you want to threaten and push to button then i guess do it
