Best Fit

January 14th, 2020

Looks better to stay.

In the wake of a Twitter where a connected draft guru thinks there is a “high possibility” the Bucs may walk away from Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, a national columnist thinks that may not be a smart move.

This year.

Over at Bleacher Report, Kristopher Knox looks at the best fit for some high profile free agents and he seems to think the best landing spot for Jameis requires no exit.

Knox thinks Jameis would be smart to stay with the Bucs.

Aside from the turnovers and a handful of head-scratching decisions, Winston was phenomenal in his first season under Arians. He paced the NFL with 5,109 passing yards and led the Buccaneers to seven wins, their most since 2016.

Yes, the turnovers are a fatal flaw. But if Arians can coach them out of Winston’s game, the Buccaneers could become a real threat in the NFC South.

Arians has shown the ability to coach up quarterbacks during his time in the NFL. He rejuvenated Carson Palmer’s career with the Arizona Cardinals, helped make Andrew Luck into a rookie Pro Bowler with the Indianapolis Colts and worked to turn Ben Roethlisberger into a Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Joe is a big, big believer in the Raheem Morris line, “I will tolerate you until I can replace you.” Joe spoke with an NFL general manager today at the Fruitdome in St. Petersburg during the Shrine Bowl practices who said there is a lot of truth to Raheem’s words.

So unless the Bucs give up the farm to trade for an established top-shelf quarterback, or Team Glazer gives up part of the team in order to trade up for Joe Burrow, Joe doesn’t believe there is a free agent quarterback at Jameis’ playing level.

Play for another 1 year prove it deal at $20M and we can talk. At $30 or more, good luck with your next team.

  2. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

It just bothers me that other QBs are in the playoffs doing better with less and in the playoff at that this year and last year as well. What happened to all the people saying this year was a make it or break it year for JW now its give him another year come on people he aint gonna change and even if he get the Bucs to the playoff he will blow it some how but then they will say oooooo give him another year and another and another.

  3. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

    Gee Willikers…what a plan BA/JL and the GBoyz have been cook’n up…seriously
bring Jameis back for one more prove it year contract and draft the trenches…kick the can down the road one more year

  4. Defense Rules Says:

I’d have no issue with Jameis staying on ANOTHER 1-year $20 mil prove-it deal either WestChap, PROVIDING that we (1) get a veteran backup QB who could take over IF Jameis falters; AND (2) that we draft a ‘serious’ potential replacement (probably in the Top-3 rounds). The thought of going through this drama AGAIN in 2021 sickens me.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here are the remaining Quarterbacks in their conference championships and their interception totals for the year….

    Aaron Rodgers 4
    Ryan Tannehill 6
    Jimmy Garoppolo 13
    Patrick Mahomes 5

The combined total for all of them is 28…….2 fewer than our QB…..inexcusable.

  6. pepsi Says:

“Aside from the turnovers he was phenomenal”.. but… 30 ints and 5 fumbles lost. thats 35 total turnovers. Its like saying “aside from the no oxygen, mars is a pretty nice place to live”

  7. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

QBs are doing better with less, yet you provide zero examples. If you say Tannehill, you lose all credibility. The only QB doing more with less in the playoffs that I see is maybe Aaron Rodgers but his defense is playing very well and their RB is a legit threat.
If Jameis walks, we BETTER draft one. Even if it’s just to sit a year and play behind Rivers, I’d be cool with that .
I think it would be very unwise to let JW go but 30M is going to handcuff this team and not allow us to build a complete TEAM. Maybe someone pays him 30M but I think even though BA wants him back, he isn’t gonna want to pay him 30M.

  8. Wesley Says:

No sense in delaying the inevitable and in turn wasting more time.

  9. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Sign both Jameis and Mariota and let’s settle the argument once and for all….

  10. SteveK Says:

    Alaska,

Look at the efficiency of the QB, not just the stats.

Jameis is inefficient as hell. More turnovers than touchdowns. Not a winner.

  11. miken Says:

“Knok thinks Jameis would be smart to stay.”…. ummm ya think? Where is he going to go and they say here is a starters contract and you are the starter??? No where except Tampa. Some one could offer him a cheap 2 year deal and sign or draft someone to compete w him but thats it. He will stay in tampa bc that one of the few places that will pay him and start him… no mater what you heard on twitter.

  12. pepsi Says:

@miken – Chicago could offer him a big multi year deal and then easily destroy almost every team they face. They have the defense to mitigate against the occasional TO happy game from Winston.

  13. AwShbucs Says:

The problem with modern day NFL fans is that they dont wanna let anyone develop.

Like it or not, turnovers are absolutely correctable. And to that point, there are a lot of QBs that can be game-managers and play not to lose.

There are significant less QBs out there that have the ability to go out there and sling the ball all over the gridiron. In terms production of positive metrics and raw upside, Jameis rivals any QB in the league.

He’s the owner of every significant passing statistic in franchise history. Owner of numerous nfl passing records. His teammates and coaches love him and want him to stay and succeed. He just put together the 8th best passing season with 5,109 yards.

Why not bet on that upside?

  14. Mister Negative Nancy Says:

Bucs fans certainly have battered wife syndrome… get crapped on so many times you think you deserve it.

The only way out of mediocrity is not to accept mediocrity.

You CANNOT win a Super Bowl with a turnover machine at quarterback. To be expected to think that somehow next year will be different is nuts.

  15. Pit of Misery Says:

Operative word in the quote is “fatal”. In the words of Don Henley of the Eagles in their HOF induction into the R&R Hall of fame taking about their Manager “ he is Satan….. but he is our Satan”. Do I think JW3 is talented… absolutely. Does a a franchise tag make sense…. absolutely. He has 1 more year to prove he can man up and do the job. If not, bye bye.

  16. Cobraboy Says:

Joe, for the record I played for three coaches in the 70’s that used the same line as Morris.

It is as old as leather helmets and grass drills.

  17. Stanglassman Says:

You guys are kidding yourself if you think Jameis is going to take 4 years ago Mike Glennon money. Would you talk 35% less than another company would pay you for your work? Offer Jameis 20 million 1 year deal and he walks period.

The Bucs should have locked him up already and they could have had him at 25-27 per for the next 5 years. Now it’s going to cost them the tag and 27 million for 2020 and most likely 40 per year 2021-

  18. Ndog Says:

Please let him leave at this point I want him gone as well just to shut all you freaking morons up.

But you better believe the expectations for the next QB will be a top 3 scoring offense and under 20 total TOs. Anything other than that will be a complete and utter failure.

  19. Fire the fans Says:

    He will be back

  20. Billy_45 Says:

A rookie comes in and throws 17 TDs and 20 picks anyway.
Hell, Philip Rivers might throw 25 in this system with a weak arm.

Jameis will be back with at LEAST the Franchise Tag, PERIOD.

They would be wiser to pay him $30 Million now than $35-$40 after they win the Division and go 13-3 next year.

    OL Rd 1
    DL Rd 2
    RB Rd 3
    QB Rd 4
    FA RG
    FA Safety
    SUH Walks
    Perriman Stays
    Brate’s salary goes to Perriman.
    OJ breaks out LMAO

  21. BrianBucs Says:

Winston’s best fit would be in the CFL.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

This is such bad logic…it’s like…other than that Mrs. Lincoln how did you enjoy the play?

Other than 28-42 JW is great…other than record ints and record PICK SIXES most at the very worst time…JW is great. Other than bad decision, long time consuming windup and poor field vision…JW is the very best.

So today I ran into a friend…young black dude..played OL for a small college and worked for the Bucs in a very secondary position…helping their promotion dept. He works at Disney now so I hadn’t seen him for a couple of years.

I asked him…Jameis! Should he stay or go? His reply without any hesitation…he needs to go. Said very matter of fact with no rancor for JW.
Too much water under the bridge…he needs to go…probably blow up at his next stop but it’s not working here for the Bucs. Both JW and the Bucs need a fresh start.

I agree. Depending on WHERE Blameless Jameis goes he may blow up. But I think the FSU JW lovers are going to be disappointed in his value on the open market. The team desperate enough to sign him will probably be another desperate team. Blameless needs a good or great team to have a shot.

Even the “Blameless” diehards have said…great running game…great defense…great special teams….

  23. Don_RyJo(e) Says:

Bruce Arians is literally the only thing keeping me from throwing in the towel on Jameis.

  24. Eric Says:

Why do everyone think Burrow is going to be so great? Ask anyone who even mentioned him before the season as the Number One overpack Lol! Think David Klinger or Andre Ware that would tell all true football fans not you fantasy joker
    to pump your brakes!

  25. AwShbucs Says:

    Stpete…

To your very first point on “Jameis Winstons” record. I really dont understand how, with as many years as you’ve spent on this planet, you still haven’t learned that its positively asinine to judge a QB the record of a 53 man team.

Say it with me. WINS ARE A TEAM STAT!

  26. AwShbucs Says:

    .. judge a QB *by*…

  27. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Why does everything concerning Jay Miss always start with the word “if?” “If” he could just cut down on the turnovers. “If” he could just cut down on the turnovers. It just never ends.

  28. Ndog Says:

Literally no one has said Jameis needs a great defense, great running game and great special teams to succeed. Why do you feel like you have to lie to get your point across?

  29. JimmyJack Says:

Defense Rules…..You dissapoint me. I know you are well versed on salaries and salary CAP.

20MIL? That number is basically fictitious. Just go look up QB salaries across the league. Especially focus on ones who recently signed. Kirk Cousins, Joe Flacco, Russell Wilson……Starting QBs cost more then 20M. Hate to burst your bubble.

  30. Buczilla Says:

Agreed. Unless we are getting someone like Mathew Stafford for little compensation, we need to stick with Jameis this year in case he has an epiphany and becomes a franchise guy. I don’t like any of the potential free agents as starters, but if we could get a dude like Andy Dalton as a backup, for a reasonable price, I’d be cool with it.

Hopefully the front office isn’t dumb enough (wishful thinking) to neglect drafting a quarterback after round one again this year. How nice would it have been to have had a young quarerback with potential sitting and learning behind Jameis last year? Maybe he could have played the last two games and played well enough to avoid this situation with Jameis altogether? Our front office has no understanding of the word foresight. Yet I have followed them for like ever like a complete dumba$$. 😂

  31. SteveK Says:

    AwShBucs,

QBs get all the glory and are accountable- more than any other position- for “wins and losses”.

Jameis’ turnovers do more for us losing, then they do for our chances of winning. Look at turnover differential and look at wins and losses. They are very telling.

  32. SteveK Says:

    Jimmyjack,

Jameis Winston is what the 20th ranked starting QB? 25th if you go by DVOA%

Jameis should hart offered the 20-25th best QB contract to match his production. St Pete is right! More than $20 million- bye bye turnover machine.

  33. SOEbuc Says:

Bottom line is Jameis won’t be able to ever win us a SB which I think is pretty darn stupid to keep him. I would not be unhappy at all if we drafted Jacob Eason at #14 and save money to pay better players than Jameis down the line. LVD and Godwin are UFA in 2021. I could seriously see Arians teach up Eason very nicely.

  34. JimmyJack Says:

Yes SteveK. Fair or not QBs take a big share of the blame. Bad or good. Always been that way always will. Its the same way in every city. Some Atlanta fans want Ryan out and some Baltimore fans Don’t think Lamar Jackson is the QB they need to win in the playoffs. Quite a few years ago when the Patriots struggled some said Tom Brady was declining. He proceeded to win multiple titles since.

That’s why I get a kick out of fans who act like Tampa Bay is unique for being very critical of their QB.

  35. Adrnagy Says:

    Mariota to the panthers.
    Rivers to the raiders.
    Brady to patriots
    Brees and teddy to saints.
    Newton to jaguars
    Dalton to broncos
    Winston to Bucs.
    Carr to colts.
    Foles or flacco to eagles.

  36. Tbbucs3 Says:

I don’t have the energy to go back and forth on Jameis all off-season.

Bottom line is the Bucs are in win now mode and will not be able to find a replacement better than the QB we have now within the next 3 months.

It’s as simple as that if you move on from Jameis you are taking an ENORMOUS risk because you already know you have a guy who can score many points and lead a top 10 explosive offense, be careful what you wish for Bucs fans.

Draft a QB and Develop? Yes. But don’t give me that Andy Dalton Teddy Bridgewater free agency nonsense.

  37. SteveK Says:

    JimmyJack,

Matt Ryan- post a SB, has a MVP Season

Lamar Jackson- 0-2 playoffs, 2019 mvp- did you see his TD:Turnover Ratio?

    Tom Brady- MVP, Champion

All of the QBs you compared in that statement are studs. Jameis is not on their level.

  38. JimmyJack Says:

SteveK that’s not even close to how NFL players salaries are determined. It’s completely unrealistic and barely worth any time discussing. It’s like walking into the Dollar Tree expecting to find Nike brand sandals……You’re never going to find them and your never finding a Free Agent starting QB for 20M. It’s just reality.

Go ahead and look at the 20-25 QB salaries. It’s probably somebody on a rookie deal or something. Or maybe somebody like Dalton that signed ages ago when the price was lower. Those deals dont at all reflect what it cost to sign a free agent starting QB in 2020.

At the end of the day the cold hard fact is that QBs are not paid the way you think they should be. It’s just not the way how it works.

  39. Adrnagy Says:

January 14th is about to end. Tomorrow is the 15th. And so on …

  40. JimmyJack Says:

SteveK that was the point…..Those QBs are studs and even there fans turned on them. Not all but some. And people around here act like we are being unfair to critique Winston…….Why should he be above the standard every other QB is held to? Basically the standard is winning.

  41. Tackleblockwin Says:

I wonder if Jameis actually practices throwing the ball away during practice when the D has him beat. If I was going to guess, I’d say no. With limited time and snaps in practices he probably forces passes in practice just like in games. If I am correct, then you gotta point the finger at coaching a little bit too for the turnovers. As BA says, “Just keep slinging it.”

  42. BrianBucs Says:

I love how so many people thought that Arians was just going to come to Tampa and flip some magic switch and turn Winston into a championship calibre true franchise QB. DIDN’T HAPPEN.
I’ve been watching Winston for 7 years now and he still looks exactly the same. Same mistakes, same turnovers, same bad decisions and bonehead plays, etc.
Winston is who he his and not Arians or any other coach is going to change that. You can give him 5 years in Arians’ system and nothing will change.
Bucs fans have had 5 years of Winston excuses and that’s enough.
    Time to move on

  43. Mr. Reality Says:

“So unless the Bucs give up the farm to trade for an established top-shelf quarterback or Team Glazer gives up part of the team in order to trade up for Joe Burrow, Joe doesn’t believe there is a free agent quarterback at Jameis’ playing level.”

LOL! Oh, my side hurts! Wishful thinking. I agree that staying here in Tampa is what’s best for Winston. But who gives a hoot about him other than his mom, dad, and Tootsie? Winston will not command more than $12-15 million anywhere else unless a starter goes down. And as for Winston’s playing level? What exactly is that? 5,000 garbage yards and more turnovers than TDs. No needed it. I agree with the SB Nation folks (hmmmm) that a weaker arm that takes care of the football will be MORE EFFECTIVE than Winston.

Winston is done in Tampa Bay. The Bucs MAY pay him $20 a year on a two year deal, with $10 bonus if he gets to the playoffs. But they are gonna draft a QB and not give up the farm to do it.

And I’d take Rivers and couple others in a heartbeat over Winston, by the way. I’m betting most ticket buying Bucs fans will tool

  44. Bucs Guy Says:

What does everyone think about trading for Josh Rolen from Miami after the draft for a 4th or 5th rd pick in 2021? He has the physical tools, but has been in 2 dumpster fire locations in AZ and Miami. Miami will probably give him away after they pick a QB in this year’s draft. They will keep Fitz as the back up to mentor the kid. That makes Rosen expendable, still on a rookie contract and a possible pick up.

Not jumping up and down over this idea, just something to consider.

  45. JimmyJack Says:

I mean Don’t even say 20 million or bye because 20million is not even a realistic number.

If that’s how you feel just say you Don’t want him. It much easier and doesn’t spread ficticous numbers throughout the fanbase. I keep hearing people repeat these numbers and repeat these numbers and sooner or later fans start thinking they are realistic and they’re not. It just makes the whole fanbase Dumber

  46. Bucs Guy Says:

    Josh Rosen, not Rolen.

  47. Bucs Guy Says:

$20M is a realistic number someone is the 15th to 20th best QB in the NFL. That assumes you rate him that high.

  48. Adrnagy Says:

    And do what with Rosen?

  49. JimmyJack Says:

Same thing with these fools saying to add a INT clause into the contract. And I know fans actually believe this crap because I heard a fool call the radio station talking about it.

Nevermind that’s it’s a complete nonsense idea to begin with. The fact is that it’s against the CBA to structure a deal that way. Yet fans keep repeating it enough where people actually believe it’s a option. It dumbens the fanbase.

  50. Mr. Reality Says:

So on free agent, again I must present: Two minutes left in the game. Bucs down by five. First and ten at their own 25 yard line. Two time outs. Of Winston, Rovers, Tannehill, Bridgewater, or Dalton, who do you think has the best chance of taking the team down the field and getting into the end zone to win the game? I’ll admit…tough call. The first four QBs have done it regularly. But now ask this question. Of all the above, which QB has the highest probability of throwing a pick and losing the game?

Winston is not an effective QB at taking care of the football, and he’s not going to transform in his decision making over the off season. He is NOT the best free agent out there.

  51. Chesapeake Bucco Says:

    Transition tag….book it

  52. JimmyJack Says:

Bucs Guy. You honestly Don’t know what you’re talking about. That is not even close to being how NFL contracts are structured. That’s not how it works and it never has been.

The a erage you are coming up with is including a bunch of QBs on rookie deals bro. Players on rookie deals have deals that ate structured much differently then Free Agents

  53. SteveK Says:

    JimmyJack,

Jameis isn’t worth more than $16-18 million per year. His turnovers are too much to overcome, as evidenced by the losing. It’s inexcusable and foolish to dismiss the turnovers. It hurts to watch the Bucs to continue to lose bc of bonehead turnovers.

  54. Adrnagy Says:

Safe scenario for Winston and Bucs is franchise tag. Again… if you sign Winston to a multi year no bad neither. Winston can play. He will throw over 3500yd 20td easily. So it’s not like he will go bust.
Bruce’s word. We can win with him or another qb because we are going to have a defense.
Imo … he’s admitting the defense is the problem. Giants game was a W. And gay missed opportunities easily would of put 3 W. And that is including Winston turnovers.
    10-6. Or 11-5. Instead of 7-9

  55. SteveK Says:

    jimmyJack,

Jameis is not worth more than what’s stated. He’s it fitting they tag money thanks to his self destructing. It’s over and Tampa fans will be restored hope through committing less turnovers.

  56. SteveK Says:

I like how the apologists pluck reasons: Defense, Kicker, windy conditions, but never, ever look 👀 at the #1A reason we suck: Turnover differential- moreover the errors committed by our QB.

  57. WestChap Says:

Agree that Jameis on a 1 year $20M deal is fiction… someone will pay him $30M. Those who say no one will pay haven’t been watching the desperate moves at QB across the league… and none of those had 5,100 yard seasons. So, our real choice is the drama of a 1 year tag at $27, let him walk or (horrors!) a cap friendly, multi-year deal with upfront cash. I totally get that any replacement QB has risks but I just can’t stomach the risk of saddling the Bucs with a cap hell worse than we’ve ever seen if JW is still ballin out statistically but fallin out of the playoffs in 2020 and 2021. We’ll see what the brain trust decides… :@

  58. Mr. Reality Says:

$20 million IS realistic, especially if other teams aren’t jumping up and down to bring him in. NO ONE has indicated publicly they want this guy as the face of their franchise, and you don’t pay a guy franchise QB money (more than $20 million) unless you do. If you have never worked sports constracts or seem to think Winston is a franchise QB, I can see how you may not get this. Winston’s market value is somewhere between a starter and backup. His value goes up if a team wants him as their future, and ONLY if they want him as their future. That’s why any tag, frachise or tranistion, on Winston, is a waste of money. They will let him got test the waters, and he should. But they are not in the same moade as they are with Barret of “don’t let him get out the door.” And don’t confuse bonuses with clauses.

  59. Coburn Says:

TBBF raises a good point. I had looked at biz scores f playoff games. Very few INT thrown. Not surprisingly the only qb that threw more than 1 is out of it

  60. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Which QB in this year’s playoffs reminds you most of Jameis?… yep none of them!

  61. Coburn Says:

That’s the last two weeks of playoffs

  62. Mr. Reality Says:

LOL! Desparate QB moves and 5,100 yards? That’s a joke right. It’s fiction for those who think that is all that critical. The five QBs in the NFL this past season who threw for the most yards are ALL sitting at home watching more efffetive QBs lead their teams in playoff games. What does that mean for Winston? He’s third place again in the division. Not even close to leading this team anywhere. And when your TOs outnumber your TD passes, you can throw all kinds of yards but still lose more games than you win, and you will RARELY beat a good team.

  63. JimmyJack Says:

SteveK his worth is not decided the way you think it is. Now you are saying 16-18 which is basically backup QB money……or more likely somebody you bring in to compete for a job. That’s not even starters money.

I really Don’t know what’s so hard to understand. You can very easily look up every QB salary in the league on the internet. You let me know the last time a starting QB signed for 16M a year please. I guarantee you it was years ago. Heck, even use the 20M figure that started it.

Also pay attention to every QB that gets signed the off-season please. Guarantee they all get north of 20M if named starter. Dalton, Rivers, Eli. Starting QB salaries Don’t go down bro…..just like the salary CAP Don’t.

  64. bucnut2 Says:

All- we should stop talking about this. Winston will absolutely be back next year. And for the record, I’m not sure that I want him back as we cannot beat good teams with his turnovers!
Here is what I’m doing if I’m the Bucs:
Franchise tag Wiston $27mil with no long term commitment(who cares if he likes it)
Trantion tag Barrett- we get to match offer OR get 2 first round picks( we win either way)
Sign back the rest fo teh D-line using singing bonuses as necessary to spread cap hit
    Extend Godwin
    Draft OL, safety, RB

  65. TDTB Says:

Curious; has anybody done a statistical analysis to determine if Jameis turned it over more or less often on a per play, per yards gained and per pass basis? To the eye, I think he was at about the same frequency this season as he’s been in years past…he just threw more often for more yards so the number of turnovers increased proportionately. Said differently, the ratio of turn overs may be exactly the same as it’s always been (i.e., Jameis didn’t improve, BA just took the governor off the gas pedal).

  66. Mr. Reality Says:

@Steve K…I agree with you but was feeling generous.

Let the man test the market and oh, he’ll be back. In the meantime, bring in Phillip Rivers. He is a unrestricted FA and will not saddle the Bucs with anything. Two years, $60 million, $35 guaranteed. Draft a OT in 1st round and QB in Round 2. Plenty of cap space to bring in a RB and/or S AND sign the current D FAs. Boom. Fans are back, Bucs contend.

  67. JimmyJack Says:

Mr Reality……So you just said that Joe Flacco is the Denver Broncos franchise QB? He got paid more then 30.

How bout Foles? More then 20.

None of these guys are franchise QBs. Not at this part of their careers.

But hey. If you Don’t think Winston is a starter and his only chance is to take a job to try to win a starting job in training camp then that’s fair.

That makes sense and would be realistic to pay him less then 20M.
I’m only arguing if the Bucs sign him to be their starter next year. That cost more then 20……Just like Flacco and Foles.

  68. Mr. Reality Says:

If anyone would have done stats, would have been the stats geeks hired by the Bucs. HOWEVER, that was done last year and the ticket buying fans don’t really care anymore after five years of excuses. Winston didn’t cut it due to bad decisions, and that’s not going to suddenly change. Time has run out.

  69. BrianBucs Says:

Totally agree with what I read earlier.
If Bucs go the Titan route of bringing Winston back (mistake) and signing a capable backup to be there when Winston falters (which he will) he will not be able to handle the pressure and will probable have a meltdown. Then you have a 27 Million dollar QB sitting on the bench.
Bucs and Winston just need to make a clean break.

  70. JimmyJack Says:

And of course nobody stated publically they want Winston to be their starter. Fans are talking about him though as a possible guy that could be avialable.

Since when do teams publically state who they want in free agency before the Super Bowl? Don’t think that’s ever happened. No team publicly stated they wanted Bridgewater, Rivers, Eli or Dalton………Does that mean none of them will find new jobs?

  71. MoneyRay Says:

Let Jamies walk. Even if he cuts down his interceptions to half it still won’t be enough because the late game decision making is still bad. If he cuts them down he’s still in the Baker Mayfield, Phillip River and Jared Goff range all of which didn’t make the playoffs. Go after Derek Carr, draft Oline, franchise tag Shaq, keep and build defense and draft Qb late.

  72. mark2001 Says:

So I guess the moral of the story is…Bucs fans, take a year off. Stop buying tickets, watching Bucs games, and surfing Bucs websites. They can’t do better than 30/30, will again bask in the darkness of the den of depression, and realize that for 2020, being a Bucs fan is a waste of time. Better luck in 2021.

  73. Mr. Reality Says:

Flacco and Foles were both brought in for that role–to be the guy for the foreseeable future. Foles is only 30 years old and Flacco is 34. That is easily 10 or 6 years respectively, if not more…IF they work out. Foles got hurt and turned in a bad ticket and it looks like they bit on Flacco who looks to have no more gas in the tank. Both of those guys were intended to be the mature leader to lead the team, to build around, to take to a championship caliber without having to start over at QB. Not unlike Peyton Manning when he TOO went to Denver…didn’t he win a SB there? Don’t confuse a franchise QB as a guy that comes to a team from the get go and have to be there forever. You seem to not understand what a franchise QB is. Especially if you think anyone will pay Winston $30 million. LOL.

  74. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Our best option (if we want to keep him) would be the transition tag……its a little more than $23 mil which would be a face-saving increase for Jameis……and it gives him a chance to test the market….it also gives us an opportunity to match any offer…..
We still retain the franchise tag for another player if we wish (Shaq)…..

  75. T REX Says:

Memo to the Winston knob gobblers: Go away! We do not need you or that disgusting human masquerading as a QB. FIVE YEARS. He sucks. No one cares about yardage except you fsu honks. Buncha losers that can’t let go of the past. Hanging on to moth ridden t shirts and torn SI’s from 2013. Losers.

  76. Mr. Reality Says:

No, teams don’t advertise who they want to go get yet. But the logic is and will be that if BA didn’t fix Winston, then who can, so why bother to take a huge gamble on a guy that has hosed his owners, GM, coaches, and fans off field and on field? Oh, Winston will play in the NFL for sure. He will make millions (hooray for him). But he’s not worth 30 million to anyone.

  77. Ineffable Dullard Repairman Says:

    Joe(s)–

If I were either one of you I’d be pulling for Jameis to stay. Like him or not, this guy butters your bread.
If the past two decades had Brady and Belichick as Buccaneers, this website would be hard pressed to match the clicks Jameis inspires.
Of course you could defer to a TE murderer, Spygate and the signing of a certified loon, Antonio Brown, but winning creates short memories.

  78. Mr. Reality Says:

Transition tag for WHAT? Who the F wants to hlep him save face, give him an increase, and give him a chance to test the market? The Glazers have been MORE than patient and generous with this azz clown. And they may have gone TOO FAR already. If the Bucs don’t get a starter in FA then talk to Winston. But don’t worry about him heading out the door. This ain’t year three or even five.

  79. Ineffable Dullard Repairman Says:

Imagine if Tom Brady stole crab legs … He’s be hailed as “just one of the boys’ in New England. Winning cures all …

  80. BucEmUp Says:

You have to give Jameis a chance to play a season STARTING WEEK 1 with a good defense and a good running game. One of those two things still remains a load of crap. After that if Jameis cant make the playoffs then I agree to cut him, but I know if he has a complete team around him he will be fine.

  81. Lavonte 1of1 Says:

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, it would be Christmas every day.

If all that matters is finding a QB that can heave it down the field for 5000 yards a season and not care about turnovers, I submit there are at least five $15-20 mil QB’s available. There is not one guy who couldn’t throw 50 times a game to two may three best receiving group in the NFL who didn’t worry about throwing INT’s could do the same job Jameis just did.

  82. MoneyRay Says:

Let Jamies walk. Even if he cuts down his interceptions to half it still won’t be enough because the late game decision making is still bad. If he cuts them in half he’s still in the Baker Mayfield or Phillip Rivers range which means no playoffs.

  83. Mr. Reality Says:

Tom Brady would likely not steal crab legs. Cut from a different cloth. He’s a class act, not a loser. Basically. Same as guys like Russ Wilson, and younger dudes like Deshaun Watson and Jared Goff. I had hoped earlier in the season that the Bucs would have traded Winston to PIT to fil in for injured Big Ben. He’s fit in there.

  84. JimmyJack Says:

Mr Reality I Don’t know what teams will pay Winston. Won’t claim to know that. And you might be right…….I would disagree but maybe Winston is washed up as a starting QB in this league and nobody pays him to start.

But one thing I do know(because it’s entirely simple to look up) is what starting QBs make in this league as free agents. It costs North of 20. Flacco and Foles are the cheapest most recent signings I can find and both make roughly 22M. As salary up goes up year to year so do salaries.

My only arguement I’m making is that if the Bucs bring Winston back as the starter it will be over 22M…….have no idea but my best guess would be his cost would be around 30.

I’m not debating whether or not he should be only arguing one thing and that’s if he does come back to start then 20M is unrealistic………..Now if he comes back to, say, compete with a rookie for the job then yes…..20M or under would be a fair price…….Can’t see that scenario playing out however, especially not here in Tampa Bay.

  85. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Mr. Reality

I said “if we want to keep him”…….that is the big IF…….just like IF he improves on interceptions….

  86. Mr. Reality Says:

“You have to give Jameis a chance to play a season STARTING WEEK 1 with a good defense and a good running game.”

Uh no. And how many Week 1 games did not absolutely STINK…even throwing pick sixes on early possessions if not the first pass? In his five years, I remember Winston having one good opening game…against the Bears in 2017. I very well remember in two other seasons he stunk it up early and all through (TEN and SF) was suspended for a third. No, don’t “have to” give Winston anything else.

  87. Mr. Reality Says:

    TBBF….got it.

  88. Mr. Reality Says:

Winston’s cost will be what the Bucs pay him, not what Winston wants…if no one else will pay him what he wants either. They will and should pay him as little as it takes ONLY if they can’t find a better replacement (and I believe they can). He will LOVE the shot a transition tag after he tests the waters…and the Bucs should NOT offer it.

  89. JimmyJack Says:

I mean I would think you all would learn about these salary things after last year…….Everybody running around here saying D.Smith was only worth 6-8M. And then when he signs that figure made up by fans was not even close to reality.

Now y’all are doing the same thing for Winston……..Let’s just put it this way. You can’t just say “oh X player is rated # 17 at PFF so nice the #16 player makes 5 million that means we should pay him just under 5 million”……..It doesn’t work like that and never has. Won’t claim to know how negotiations work but it’s quite simple to see it Don’t work that way if you just pay attention a little.

  90. Mr. Reality Says:

Rivers vs. Winston. They both threw for a bunch of yards. Which guy will offer fans hope and sense of new direction (especially if the draft a guy to be behind Rivers)…Rivers or Winston? Which guy will put more butts in the seats on opening day? Rivers or Wnsston? Which guy is less likely to embarass the owners and GM and coaches who couldn’t seem to get it in turning a corner if Winston sucks yet again?

  91. Mr. Reality Says:

    D. Smith, like Winston, is a bottom tier starter at his position. But to replace Smith would have costs a lot more and the track record on OL FAs is not real good. Who else could they have brought in at OT? There are better options than Winston. Also, D. Smith is not the face of the team. Thank goodness.

  92. SirClicksAlot Says:

Jameis will be offered a multi-year contract at probably a little less than 30 mil a year. If he doesn’t like it, he’ll get the franchise tag. End of story.

  93. Isaac haggins Says:

Didn’t Jameis make a pro bowl with less turnovers ????

  94. SteveK Says:

    Gross!

For the price of the franchise tag, I hope we let Winston walk and resign: Shaq, Suh, Nassib and extend Godwin

  95. Ndog Says:

I must say I am truly amazed at how many people want Jameis gone. I mean I know it’s not as many as it seems cause you have the same CLUELESS leaders SteveK, Reality, BrianBucs and of course Tmoron. But even removing their repeative nonsense there is still quite a few folks that clearly don’t understand that literally the ONLY PART OF OUR TEAM that has been above average since Jameis got here is the passing game. This is something no one can deny, though I am sure the CLUELESS leaders will try. I mean just think about this, our running game has been trash, our kickers have been trash and our defense has been an abomination while our passing game has been consistently in the top 10 and yet we have many people begging for the leader of our passing game to be the one that is gone. Simply look at it through that prism and you will just how absolutely ridiculous these comments are. Again when he leaves you people better be ready cause while Arains days he can win with anyone that is not quite true. He has won with Manning, Big Ben, Luck and Palmer. Are those just any QBs? In addition to that what has he actually won as a head coach? I’m not ripping the guy, heck I was thrilled when they hired him but those are legit questions. That being said non of it really matters what is going to happen is going to happen but I will say this if they let Jameis go the next QB better produce and produce immediately cause their is no grace period. If you let a 5,000 yard 33 TD QB walk that led the number 3 scoring offense in the NFL with no running game you cannot have any drop off on offense and you better win. Anything other than exactly what the offense produced this year and wins is a is a failure.

  96. JimmyJack Says:

Point was that D.Smith was worth the 14M that he got paid. Not even close the the 6-8 fans were saying………And I Don’t mean worth by how he rated at his position. I mean that was his worth cause that’s how much it costs to sign a top LT free agent at his age.

And sorry if you Don’t think he was a top FA……I’ll stand corrected if you name me 2-3 other LTs avialable last year that was better.

So now a guy is a “class act” when they get suspended for cheating and leaving his pregnant girlfriend for another chick?

No bro you’re not bias or are you just CLUELESS???

  98. Lavonte 1of1 Says:

Jameis will get a contract but his next $7,000,000.00+ salary bump will go against his best interest.

7 million? We talk about it like it’s chump change. It’s a ridiculous amount of money that so many say “whatever” like its just candy. $7 million .. think about that? That could be what some may have only made in a lifetime of work. I think it’s time to give that money back to the fans. You wanna sell out stadiums? You the NFL put a cap on these salaries, cover the cost of building new state of the art stadiums, and cut the cost of admissions. Tag Jameis with non-exclusive tag, wait …and move on

  99. JimmyJack Says:

Well here is a little kick in the teeth for y’all saying Winston aren’t worth 20M…….I just checked out bleacher reports Top free agent list.

In the QB department Winston is rated #5. Here’s the kicker…….The 4 ahead of him……Brady, Brees, Dak, and Tannehill……….What do those 4 have in common? All 4 are very likely to return to their teams next year.

What that means is if all 4 return Winston is suddenly the top Free agent QB in the league. That means he is indeed making north of 22M………And almost assurdely well north of 22M given his age and potential……..So while y’all say things like he’s only worth 20 and nobody else wants him Bleacher report disagree. And I’d guess if you went to other sites like ESPN or Fox they have Winston ranked similarly. These are outlets with top tier reporters paid handsomely to know and understand how teams across the league view these players. I’m guessing their predictions are much more accurate then us Bucs fans that are giving our emotion based opinions.

  100. Joseph Mamma Says:

The best way to coach the turnovers out of him:

Don’t hike the ball to him.

  101. SteveK Says:

    Ndog,

Love your fire, but to call fellow fans “CLUELESS” is a bit strong. Wake up and smell the turnovers!

    Losing is awful.

Sorry that you are ok with the “fools gold” offense. Jameis averaged 7.5ppg for the opposing defense- all By himself. When your QB’s #3 leading TD recipient is the opposing Defense, you have problems.

I forgive you for your name calling and hope we can continue the debate. I hope we cut bait with Jameis because his production does not match the reported price tag.

  102. thisisouryear!! Says:

    Jimmyjack-

When you look at the list of suitors for him, it’s slim. Almost everyone has a QB that they’re happy with. Colts and possibly Bears. With that, who says we can’t wait to go after a QB that historically has off the field issues and leads the league in turnovers over the last 5 years.

Everyone harps on the yards but the combination of Winston and Fitz had more yards in 2018 than Winston had in 2019. I think it’s the receivers.

With that being said, I think he’s going to be doing good to 15 on the open market. He’s not a top 10 QB.

  103. SteveK Says:

    jimmyJack,

Let another team pay that much to JW. Bet if we pay him that much we don’t sniff playoffs bc our team will have to suck elsewhere to pay a middle of the pack QB.

  104. BucEmUp Says:

Nobody ia going to pay him.30 mil.He would be stupud to seek a bug multi year deal.If he were smart he would stay and play a one year prove it contract . Bucs should draft a qb and see how it shakes out after 2020

  105. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

    Luke Kuechly retired!

  106. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Jameis interceptions just dropped by two for next season so see there is hope! Go Bucs! Go Jameis!

  107. Ndog Says:

SteveK do you win by leading the league in penalities?

Do you win by have one of the worst FG% in the league?

Do you win by having the 30th ranked pass defense?

LET ME SAY THIS CLEARLY THE ONLY PART OF OUR TEAM THAT IS EVEN CONSIDERED GOOD IS OUR PASSING GAME. Why do you people keep talking about winning? What do you expect from any QB when the entire team sucks? So were all those points in Seattle “fools gold”? We’re all those points against the Giants “fools gold”? We’re all those points against the Colts, Lions and Rams “fools gold”? Cause you see without the offense scoring a crap ton of points in each of those games we get blown out cause our defense sucked and news flash we couldn’t run the ball either so how do you think we scored all those points? You see you guys complain about TOs and I get it but you completely ignore all the points scored that without our record this year would have 2-14.

  108. Rojas Says:

    Luke Kuechly retired.

  109. SteveK Says:

    Ndog,

Our QB turns it over at a record rate. Almost 5% of his throws are picked.

    I’m glad you brought up
Penalties. Penalties are like stunning your big toe- painful and makes you mad. Turnovers are like winning a Darwin award. We can overcome penalties on drives and still score or hold the team. You can’t put up points on the board, or keep them from a pick six, when you are turning it over.

I accept all the good, and I can’t have it with the frequency, abundance and inconsistency with all the bad. It’s not $QB worth it.

  110. SteveK Says:

    Ndog,

24 INT in 8 home games. That’s 3 INT per home game. We went 3-5 at home.

  111. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

    N-dog-

So if Fitz and Winston combined for more yards in 2018 than Winston in 2019 and the problem was them not scoring touchdowns. Then Arians fixes the touchdowns in 2019. It’s the coaching and our receivers. Our QB heaving the ball is a beneficiary of Godwin and Evans.

  112. Defense Rules Says:

@JimmyJack … “20MIL? That number is basically fictitious. Starting QBs cost more then 20M. Hate to burst your bubble.”

And JimmyJack you disappoint me, because IF you’d read the whole thing you would’ve seen that I was responding to WestChap who promoted the $20 mil salary, and I agreed with his proposal PROVIDING certain other conditions were met.

Personally I’m perfectly willing to let BA decide Jameis’ fate AND how much he should be offered for a contract. Fitz started for $8 mil this year in Miami, and only won 2 fewer games with a FAR WORSE TEAM than our $21 mil wunderkid. Tannehill has the Titans one win away from the Super Bowl and he only made $5.4 mil. And over HALF of the 2019 starting QBs made LESS than $20 mil … and thus less than Jameis did. So please, don’t push that ‘starting QBs cost more than $20 mil’ without verification.

  113. SB Says:

    WoW.
JW threw an Average of 3 Ints in Every home game this yr?

    Shakes head.

  114. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

It’s supply and demand. I just don’t see the demand for a qb that leads the league in turnovers over the last 5 years and has off the field issues. I think he’ll make 12 million as a free agent.

  115. Tackleblockwin Says:

Was Jameis’s 30 picks this year an anomaly? Was throwing for 32 tds and over 5000 yards an anomaly? Not sure we know unless we see another season in BAs offense.

  116. Defense Rules Says:

@JimmyJack … “Well here is a little kick in the teeth for y’all saying Winston aren’t worth 20M…….I just checked out bleacher reports Top free agent list. In the QB department Winston is rated #5”.

Whoopee; also irrelevant. Jameis is worth only as much as his next team is willing to pay him. Spotrac has his Market Value listed at $26.7 mil, but I’m not even convinced he could get that much JimmyJack.

Reason? BA is very highly thought of around the NFL, and is viewed by many as being ‘The QB Whisperer’. Worked wonders with Carson Palmer, BUT if HE passes on Jameis Winston then what message is THAT sending to the GMs around the league? Tell you what message it sends to me: ‘I don’t see enough potential in Jameis to even franchise tag him at $27 mil for another opportunity to work with him in 2020’.

    Disagree JimmyJack?

  117. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

    Tackleblockwin-

I don’t think the yards and touchdowns were an anomaly. I think the ints decrease but there’s something wrong with Jameis. I think he has an anxiety disorder. Maybe one of those guys that psyches himself out because he over does it. I’ve never seen so many first drive int’s. I don’t think there’s any chance he can handle a playoff game.

  118. T REX Says:

npuppy: You’re a freaking head case loser like your wanna be man, Winnie the Poop. Bunch a fsu losers in here. WINSTON SUCKS! He throws for a bunch of yards. Who cares? You losers that think yardage equals wins. Who is clueless?

Just the fact that we have to fight over that loser is reason enough to ditch him.

Too bad the glazer suck worse than Winnie the poop

  119. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

Plus he’s been almost historically bad in the firs quarter since being here.

  120. JimmyJack Says:

Defense Rules……What do you mean verifacition? It’s just a fact bud….When you sign a free agent QB to b your starter the price is North of 20M. Thinking you can sign Winston to be a starter for 20M is completely false. Simple fact is that the rate is higher and always rising.

Comparing Winston to Fitzpatrick is completely irrevelant as Fitz was not signed to be a starter. He was signed to compete with Rosen. Tannehill again is irrevelant. He was signed to backup Mariota. Mariota was later benched. That is not the same as signing a starter.

A fair comparison is to guys who were signed as free agents last year to be starters. Flacco, Foles & Wilson……Not sure who else. All of them make over 20M.

You can’t count rookie contracts because they were not signed as free agents. And you can’t count players that signed years ago because of inflation. You have to compare apples to apples. If you do that you see there are no free agent starting QB signing for 20M or less.

  121. Ndog Says:

SteveK those numbers are great and all but guess what if we had a kicker worth a crap we win the Giants and Falcons games. Then we are 5-3 at home still with a horrible defense and Horrible running game. Bro you are wrong flat out wrong this team has let the QB down not the other way around. The 49ers game as an example Barber runs a crap route causing a pick 6, OJ bats a ball in the air that gets picked, OJ fumbles inside the 20 yard line AND we get a punt blocked but you guys put that entire game on the QB. It’s ridiculously stupid stuff that you guys post daily that just drives me nuts. Blame the QB when literally every part of the team around him is making mistake after mistake. How do you not see that?????

  122. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

    JimmyJack-

Who is going to sign Winston to be a starter? Indy or Chicago maybe… But they’re not stupid. They know they’re getting a maybe. Not proven. Never won at this level. Leads the league in ints for 5 years and off the field issues. No way he gets 20 million. Not enough teams interested.

  123. Dapostman Says:

Is it easier to get a 20 TD guy to 30 TD without a run game

    or

Is it easier to get a 30 INT guy to 15 INT without a run game

    That is the conundrum.

  124. Craig Says:

Jameis coming back is a waste of time and money. Being able to chuck the ball is not what makes a QB. Most of the DBs can also chuck the ball as well as Jameis. They were probably the kind of athletes that played QB at some point in time.

They don’t play it now because they couldn’t make the cut with decisions. Jameis has also not shown that he can make competent decisions when the game is on the line.

This last year was his audition to become the $100 million dollar man and he blew it. The last two games he had a decent running game and the defense was lights out. He gave those games away.

I can’t understand why anyone wants him back. I also don’t understand anyone who says a QB fresh from college is going to throw 20 picks.

The kids now have all gone to QB camps and have better mechanics than Jameis does now. They have had more schooling in reading defenses than Jameis seems to have ever had.

If he is kept and the defense kept, there is no money to bring in a “qualified backup”. the best we could hope for is Josh Rosen and he is going to need too much work.

Coach up Griffin and draft a QB in the second or third round, there will still be some big names around, not a lot of teams will have taken QBs before that. Give Jameis not more than a year and be prepared to watch him stalk the sidelines.

If Jameis isn’t re-signed, then bring in someone who can start for a year or two.

  125. Pewter power Says:

If the glazers aren’t the horrible owners everyone thinks they are, you send Jason licht packing if there is no succession plan in place. It would be completely moronic to bank on this guy not turning the ball over next season after doing it 5 years in the nfl and also in college.

I’ll say it again Winston earned one more season but also earned some credible quarterback competition. Not to beat him out in training camp but to bench him during the season for too many turnovers

  126. Ndog Says:

Trex you truly are the most CLUELESS of the Clueless. You do know that we were number 3 in the NFL in scoring right? What am I thinking you don’t know anything, silly me.

  127. JimmyJack Says:

Now if you want to say that you wanna sign Winston but you Don’t want him to be your starter then you can get him at 20M or less. If you want to sign him to compete with a rookie or be a backup that’s different.

I am stressed ctly talking about signing Winston to be your starter. If thats the case he is worth North of 22M.

You can’t walk into Sears and tell them you want to buy their lawmower for $100. Doesn’t matter if that all you think it’s worth. You gotta pay what it costs dude. It the same with NFL QB…You can’t walk into the free agency store and think your buying a starting QB for 20M. That’s just not what they cost…….If you want a 100 dollar lawn mower then you are looking at used mowers(backup QBs)…..or you can buy a bunch of brand new parts for $50 and build one yourself(draft a rookie)……But if your walking into Sears with $100 the best you are walking out with is a weed wacker(wide receiver)

  128. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

I agree. I just don’t believe anyone is out there that will hand him the keys to the offense. He will get signed to compete no doubt. But that’s why I don’t think we pay him anymore here.

  129. JimmyJack Says:

Thisisouryear……I do not know who will start on Winston to start for them. But I looked at Bleacher Report and they got Winston as the #5 QB free agent. Brady Brees Tannehill and Dak are ahead of him. If all five of them are gone that makes Winston a top Free agent QB. I’m betting their will be a team(probably a few) looking for one of those.

  130. Tackleblockwin Says:

    Thisisouryear!!! –

I know what you mean about Jameis and his anxiety lol. And yes, his home performances have been less than ideal.

I asked Joe last week who in the organization would make the decision on Jameis. Joe kindly and quickly responded, “The Glazer Family”. Now surely BA is going to have a big say on this imo. BA has coached a long time in this league. Surely he knows if Jameis’s problems are fixable.

  131. SB Says:

    WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I need a Break Down from NDog of just HOW many of those 24 INTs in 7 home games were actually NOT JW3s fault.
I’m on pins and needles for this analysis.

  132. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

    Jimmyjack-

I get why you are saying. Pewter report had an article they went team by team on who would be interested in Winston. The market is not there, only Indy and they said no to Chicago. Plus you throw in Arians isn’t interested if he’s not resigned plus a history of ott the field issues. I don’t see him being signed as more than someone to compete for a starting position. With that, I think he’s be doing good to get 12 million. My opinion.

  133. SB Says:

For argument’s sake let’s say there were 9 home games. Ndog likes all the help he can get.

  134. Defense Rules Says:

@JimmyJack … “A fair comparison is to guys who were signed as free agents last year to be starters. Flacco, Foles & Wilson……Not sure who else. All of them make over 20M.”

Somewhat bogus argument but I’ll play along. BOTH Jameis AND Marcus Mariota made the same amount last season as STARTERS under your criteria … $20.9 mil.

How much is Marcus worth on the open market today? Maybe $5.4 mil like Tannehill was in 2019 to be some team’s backup? So if the Bucs don’t sign Winston, is THAT a fair salary for HIS services? After all, they would’ve BOTH been let go after 5 years by the teams that drafted them into the NFL and would no longer be viewed as ‘starting QBs’.

And BTW, I don’t think I’d be comparing Jameis Winston to Russell Wilson.

  135. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

    Tackleblockwin-

I agree 100%. I trust Arians. This team is headed in the right direction. He’ll make the right decision. He certainly knows more than me.

  136. JimmyJack Says:

But Thisisouryear…….If you are trying to make the point that Bleacher Report is wrong and Winston aren’t a top Free agent then that is fair.

That’s your opinion and I’m not arguing opinions here.

I’m only arguing facts…..That signing a free agent to be your starter costs 22M miminum….Probably more since the CAP went up this year. That 22M dollar market was set last year when Flacco and Foles both signed as the cheapest avialable options. These prices never go down. Only up.

And it’s not just about Winston either. You can dump Winson and sign anybody else…..Rivers, Eli, Dalton. If your signing the to be your starter they are going to cost north of 20M……..Now if your signing them to play a few games while you draft a rookie and get him ready to take the job at midseason that’s different……But then you have less options because so e of the free agents will get starters jobs elsewhere.

  137. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

    Jimmyjack-

I’m not arguing that. After reading that article, to me, it was eye opening. Most teams are happy with their QB or they’re getting one of the top Qbs in the draft. Things are changing. The QB demand isn’t there like it usedto Be. I don’t think someone is going to bring him in as an uncontested starter.

  140. JimmyJack Says:

Defense Rules how is that a slightly bogus argument? How?

They were the last free agent starting QBs to sign. Along with Wilson and Goff. Those are the player who set the market for the cost to sign a free agent starting QB.

Flacco and Foles represent the cheapest end of the market. Wilson and Goff represent the highest. That means Winston must gall in between that range…..or higher if he’s worth it(not saying he is). But lower just isn’t a option. Like I said Cost rises every year just like CAP money. It has never gone down year to year. Can you tell me that it has.

But now I have to ask you if we are talking about the same thing? Because you are bringing Mariota into the equation. Why? Mariota just lost his job as a starter in this league and I’ve heard no talk about him getting a starters job. Why are you comparing Winston to somebody who is now looked at as a backup? Do you think Winston is now a backup?

If you Don’t think Winston is a starting QB then we are arguing over nothing. I am strictly talking about the Bucs paying Winston to remain their starting QB.

  141. Rodney Munch Says:

Defense Rules thought Chris Conte and Ryan Smith were great players who would lead the Bucs to the playoffs… and he’s a guy who thinks of himself as really understanding defense.

He thinks it’s 1971 and you just run for 3 yards per carry and you’ll win the SB.

Come on – do you really care what someone like that thinks about QBs?

Just teasing you Defensive Rules – but not really.

  142. JimmyJack Says:

Thisisouryear……If you are saying that the market for a starting QB is eroding and that the cost is going to start going down that’s fair.

I think the price for all player salaries will go up but at least I can understand your point and it makes sense.

I’ve just become increasingly annoyed with fans saying what players are worth and saying that’s what the team should do. And then if you watch what these players get paid in free agency it makes no sense. Same thing with Donavon Smith last year. Fans saying we should sign him for a salary that doesn’t make any sense.

  143. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

    Jimmyjack-

That’s my point. I don’t think he will be paid over 12 million elsewhere. If we resign him to 15 and bring in a rookie to compete, it leaves money to resign our defense and bring in a couple of missing pieces. I think we are super close. I think Winston needs to compete for the starting position.

  144. SB Says:

Where is Ndog when you need him 🙂

  145. JimmyJack Says:

And also Mariota and Winston both made 20M but those figures mean basically nothing.

They were both on rookie contracts. Those contracts are structured completely differently then Free agent contracts.

It’s unfair to compare any rookie salary to free agents. Its not similar in any way shape or form.

Yeah, no one wants the NFL’s leading passer, a 25 year old who just passed for 33 TDs and became the 6th man in history to surpass 5,000 yards and you don’t think he’ll get paid as well as Mike Glennon did.

Wow, you really sum up the anti-Winston crowd well. You have no idea what you’re talking about, you have no frame of reference and you make outlandishly stupid comments.

I will give you an out since I didn’t bother to read up the page and perhaps you’re not talking about Winston – but if you are, LOL!

  147. SB Says:

Rod I am Totally with Winston coming back no matter how much I argue with the blind supporters.
I want JW back but I think it cant be more than a Tag. Transition is probably better for JW and Franchise for Barrett. We would be bidding against ourselves for JW IMO.

  148. JimmyJack Says:

Thisisouryear……..Maybe that happens. Maybe they do bring in Winston at 15 to compete.

Of course the only way that happens is if no other team wants to pay Winston to be a starter.

Just based off of my one quick look at Bleacher report it looks like if Winston hits the open market he might be one of if not the top FA QB. Now that’s just a Bleacher report rating. They are no God’s. They have certainly gotten their ratings wrong in the past. But they probably get more right then wrong……..For sure our front office has a really good idea what the market for Winston will be. We will just have to wait and see.

But in mine opinion if the only job Winston can get is a backup/competition it won’t be with the Bucs. If he hits that part of his career I’m guessing he would want a fresh start. Wouldn’t blame him either…….A new city would feature mostly unbiased fans not a good Chuck that is already done with him.

  149. JimmyJack Says:

But I Don’t really need Bleacher Report. All I gotta do is read Rod Much telling people how little little they know. That’s enough to convince me.

For now on forget them sites. Don’t need em when Rodney right here.

  150. Rodney Munch Says:

SB – I’m still thinking Winston gets a multi-year deal which is in fact just like 2 years guarantee for around $30m/year. That gives him more than he’d make being franchised but still gives the Bucs an out in a couple of years. The announced numbers will be huge, like 5 years / $170million or something, but it will be more like 2 years / $60m. We shall see, but if Winston doesn’t progress and the team doesn’t improve then Arians will be gone and the team is blown up so the 2nd year of the deal really won’t matter.

For Shaq, he’s likely to be franchised. I’m certainly not giving him a new deal based on paying him as a 20-sack a year guy. I think he’s good, but I think this is easily going to be his career year. So you franchise him for a year and see what he does. If he gets 18-20 sacks again, then man, you have a nice problem – but it is a problem since he’s the highest paid defense in the history of the NFL at that point. But more likely he has 11 or 12 sacks, a really nice year, and you resign him then based on that.

However we shall see. Maybe they do think they can win it all, sign Tom Brady to throw to Evans, Godwin, OJ and Brate, and they say F-it, we’re all in and draft a RB in round 1, sign a top flight 3rd WR and just go all in. I mean obviously I don’t foresee that happening, but if they somehow just went all in and said f’ it, we’re going balls deep and f the future… that’d be something. Or if they Arians talked Luck into unretiring and they somehow made a package to trade for him, that’s another route. Again, neither of those will happen, but it’s good to get the anti-Winston crowd to at least have something different to talk about.

  151. Rodney Munch Says:

JJ- Bleacher Report is fake news. Also I’m pretty sure you told me Ryan Smith was pretty good, even defended Conte, so you and defense are on the same page. Maybe not, but it seems like something you’d say.

  152. JimmyJack Says:

And you can just excuse me now for being annoying. I’mma ague with y’all every time you throw out these unrealistic scenarios about signing starting QBs for 18million.

It’s a detriment to the fanbase. Fans see it and believe it then if we sign him for the actual price fans freak out and think we overpaid.

Hey if you Don’t want Winton that’s fine. But Don’t act like he’ll take some chump rate cause you Don’t personally like him. Be realistic.

Y’all did the same thing last year with D.Smith and apparently didn’t learn…………..At the end of the freaking day the Bucs got basically two options. Either pay Winston probably around 30M to be our QB or move on……….Thats why the tag is right around 30. Cause it’s fair. And guess what? If you bring in another QB it’s ain’t gonna be much less then what you give Winston.

  153. JimmyJack Says:

Yep….I said Ryan Smith and Conte were good depth players……Did you not even saw what Ryan Smith did on Special Teams this year? That’s what quality depth foes buddy. You once again was proven wrong.

  154. JimmyJack Says:

Also the term fake news lost all meaning about four years ago.

It’s actually been determined that the majority of fake news claims have been proven to be entirely false.

  155. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

    Rod-

You’re right. I’m not a Jameis supporter. I’ve struggled to cheer for him since he as drafted. Still bothers me with his off the field issues. I’ve tried to keep an open mind. Like I said earlier, the need for quarterbacks isn’t there throughout the league like it used to be. You combine that with someone that the qb whisperer gave up on, the league leader in turnovers for the last 5 years and the off field issues, plus he’s never won at this level ( for whatever reason). I’d be surprised if he was signed as a starter.

That being said, I have been fighting with myself trying to like Jameis. I’m a die hard Bucs fan. If we do keep him I don’t think there’s anyway in the world we should should sign him and lose the cap space to keep the defensive line. I think we are close with or without Winston. I think Arians has us on the right path.

  156. Rodney Munch Says:

JimmyJack – You got triggered when I said fake news… LOL! Anyways said all the fake news claims were fake? The same fake news that was called fake news? In any case Bleacher Report is fake news as in they literally just make stuff up and publish it as news instead of opinion.

Like for example I can say… I heard the Bucs have soured on Jameis Winston and are hoping to make a run at Drew Brees when he becomes a FA… then when that doesn’t happen and the Bucs just resign Winston I can just say that higher ups in the organisation determined that Winston needed to be retained because he’s going to only be 26-years old going into next season… I bet you there’s at least a 16% chance that Bleacher Report runs with my comment as a source…

Anywho Ryan Smith is an awful depth player – but is a good special teams player. Depth vs special teams specialists are not the same thing. Also at the time of the argument the Bucs had him as the starting nickel before the 2018 season.

Finally Conte was always trash, the guy single handedly lost that MNF game last season that cost us the season. Saying anything positive about Chris Conte should be a hate crime. I truly believe that with all my heart, and as such you must respect my feelings.

You guys have just spent the past month preaching that JW is the ONLY salvation…the only ONE who can lead this TEAM to victory and you have the gaul to say that stats are a team effort.

This is really rich. Bwaahaaahaaaa. First only JW can save this “TEAM”

Second ..endless rants about 5000 yards and 30 TDS…JW got those or did OUR TEAM have anything to do with it? Did Godwin and ME balling out have anything to do with it…how about Perriman those final two weeks…did the OL play…did the defense grow into a solid unit the last half of the season…ALL irrelevant unless we keep “Blameless”

Are you able to comprehend how ABSURD it is to talk to me about TEAM when the JW posters are actually talking about blowing up the TEAM because of their hurt fee fees if we cut bait with “Blameless” the teflon QB? Do you possess a mirror?

  158. Rodney Munch Says:

Thisisouryear!!! – You can like or not like Winston, I really don’t care, but thinking he’s going to get less than Mike Glennon money is just ridiculous.

Also the Bucs can resign everyone, it’s really not that difficult.

The Bucs have around $80m in space to start. They cut/trade Brate, Jensen and Gholston now they have $101m.

    Winston gets $30m
    Shaq gets $15m
    Suh gets $10m
    JPP gets $15m
    Perriman gets $10m
    Nassib gets $7m

So in that scenario where you keep everyone you’ve still got $14m for the draft and to sign a cheap FA. Personally I’m not too concerned about bringing Perriman back since he did nothing for 12 games, but if they wanted him back, around $10m should get it done. For Nassib, he’s the one guy where I really don’t know the market. I sort of took a lower number than expected on him, but I also don’t know if they bring him back or not.

The Bucs address their RT, RB and TE positions in the draft and you should be in pretty good position.

Also the Bucs are almost there because they scored the 3rd most points in the NFL. Winston will cut his INTs back to like 16 or so – he’s never thrown more than 18 before and that was in his 2nd year, so it’s not like he’s destin to throw 30 a year. Also look at Carson Palmer his first year under Arians, he was 34 and his INTs jumped to a career high 24 that year, then the next year he’s one of the best QBs in football before getting hurt, then the following year he has like 34 TDs and 11 INTs when he’s finally healthy and they got 13-3 I believe. Carson Palmer and Winston are very similar type of QBs, so if you want to see how QBs do under Arians as they get more time in, just look there.

  159. JimmyJack Says:

Well I will agree Conte flopping on MNF was the turning point to our season. But for you not not realize that a depth player making a impact on Special Teams makes him a high quality depth piece is basic admission that you do not fully grasp the game of football.

I told him there’s two things you’ve got to do: You’ve got to block the blitz, and if you fumble, you’re not playing. He fumbled like one time in six years.

“The main thing about a turnover is that you don’t get to punt the ball. Say you’re averaging 43 yards a punt. That translates to points. You turn it over, you don’t get to punt it. You don’t get to punt it, that’s 47 yards that they don’t have to gain. That’s the hidden yardage.

Then you look at Jameis leads the league in turnovers over the past 5 years, his off the field antics. Teams aren’t excited about him. He’s a maybe.

I know you’re going to say yards and TDS. He and Fitz had more yards combined the previous year but they couldn’t punch it in. Arians fixed that this year. But the yards are basically the same (slightly less this year). I think it’s the receivers.

Mariota was fired(?) as Titans starting QB. IF Winston doesn’t get a contract with the Bucs, he’d be in EXACTLY THE SAME BOAT. That’s a valid comparison IMO.

I wonder what it would take to convince the Bengals to trade their No. 1 pick. If we franchise tag Winston, does that enable us to trade him? If so, would the Bengals take him and maybe our number 1 this year and 2021?

Burrow looks special to me. No one has ever crushed the quality of competition like he did this year. Look at who he beat, and who he dominated. He threw for 60 td’s and nearly 6000 yards against the SEC, and the champs of the Big 12 and ACC. He has elite arm talent, moves well in the pocket, great vision and decisiveness, and can run.

Cincinnati surely recognizes they are not a QB away from being competitive. They stink and need players all over the place. Could they be enticed to take Jameis (assuming tagging him makes him tradable) plus additional picks and maybe players? Who knows? Doubt it, but kinda fun to debate!

  173. ChipBuc Says:

Bottom line is no matter how much all you Winston haters piss and moan about him isn’t going to change what happens next year. The bucs are in the position of having to bring him back because unless you some how draft Burrows or Tua there is no one out there better than Winston to run Arians offense. Sure he throws a lot of picks, but isn’t that a by product of Arians offense. When you throw 40 to 50 times a game 20 or more yards down field, interceptions are going to happen. Throw in a terrible running game, a erratic kicking game, and until the last 8 or 9 games a terrible defense, the odds are against you to have success. What I’m saying is like it or not we scored more than enough points which Winston had a big part in, to have a winning season. Hell if Gay makes a couple of field goals we win 2 more games and we are 9 and 7. Like it or not logic says Winston is coming back, so just deal with it. Just my opinion.

  174. JimmyJack Says:

Defense Rules. Wanted to come back cause this was an interesting discussion to me. We Don’t seem to be talking about the same thing. I’ll ble myself for not explaining good.

I’m only discussing one option here. Only talking about if the Bucs decide to retain n Winston as their starter. Not talking about bringing Winson in to compete(similar to Tannehill) & I’m not talking about if they bring him in while the develope a rookie(similar to Fitz). Those are different discussions and change the size of the contract.

That’s why I am comparing Flacco Foles Wilson & Goff. Those were the only QB I know of that signed last year as starters(or retained as starters). Tannehill and Fitz was not signed to be starters so their contracts are not comparable. Mariotas contract last year is also not comparable because he was never signed as a free agent to be a starter. He was drafted.

Sounds like you are talking about signing Winston to compete for the starters job. That is not a starter contract and not what I’m talking about……….That discussion probably only happens if free agency starts and Winston is still unsigned. If they want to keep Winston from hitting free agency they will likely have to sign him as a starter(either multi year or franchise tag)…….Otherwise Winston will probably hold off from signing until he visits teams and see if he can get a starters contract…….or maybe somebody will offer him more then the Bucs to compete……..I also think if Winston does hit that point he will defientally leave for a fresh start. He would probably be better off in a new city where his new fans Don’t have emotional hangups about his past. But ya never know, maybe he’ll stay here.

And yes essientially he and Mariotta would be in the same boat. Both looking and hoping for a starters contract. But I think Winston would generate more interest across the league and a better chance to get a fat contract.

  175. JimmyJack Says:

76….. Theoretically yes. Probably the only way they do that is if they think Burrows is a bust and Don’t want him.

Even if they do not want Burrows they ate for sure gonna want a top player this year. Highly doubful they wanna trade for #1 all the way to 14………Even if somehow they would consider it they for sure are going to want at least our top three picks this year and our #1 & 2 next year and I doubt that would be enough. Maybe if you threw in Godwin and our #1 2022 pick on top of that they might think about it.

Glennon got $14m and you think Winston, the leagues leading passer, 2nd leading TD passer, who only just turned 26 like two weeks ago, you think Winston is going to get less money than Glennon. That’s just pure idiocy.

All this discussion about Winston has become boorish IMO. Well, except to Rodney Munch, who’s obviously convinced that every discussion has two viewpoints: His & all those others who are flaming idiots.”

THANK YOU!!!!! Someone who finally gets it and knows what side of the fence they’re on.

    God bless.

I think we should franchise Winston for next season and then draft a QB with one of our top 2 picks. The QB class is way too deep not to take a chance.

Also…. I think we should strongly consider moving Mike Evans or Godwin for the right draft capital. No I don’t really want to do it but we have so many pass catchers that it would allow us to be a more complete team. Maybe we could even trade up for Tua at that point.

We need to franchise Jameis and then draft a QB with one of our top 2 picks. The QB class is too deep not to take a chance.

We also should consider trading Evans or Godwin for a kings ransom of draft capital. No I don’t really want to but both guys are All pro talents and it would allow us to become a more complete team instead of being one dimensional. Every team still in the playoffs had a stout running game. Thats the key to success not being overloaded with pass catchers playing from behind

So Mirror.. you like guys that have tons of talent, can’t learn to improve their game to become a better QB while throwing a record number of interceptions to touchdowns, with many personal character “poor decisions” in their recent past. And that is what you choose to fanatically follow. Your choice…good luck with that.

Bias that no one wants to be apart of. Last year when I flew from Honolulu to Tampa to attend the s
49ers v Bucs, I spoke with many residents that wanted no part of the
Buccaneers for the exact bias you display.
