Warren Sapp: We Can’t Stop A Nosebleed; That’s Our Problem In Tampa

December 11th, 2019

Vita Vea gets mixed reviews

Legendary No. 99 looks at the Bucs defense and the Jameis Winston bashers and laughs his ass off.

Recently Warren Sapp joined The Adam Schein Podcast and was asked about whether he thinks America’s Quarterback will be back with the Bucs next season.

Absolutely, Sapp said. But the question got Sapp all worked about how Jameis has been victimized by pass-catching attempts. Sapp called Jameis “an excellent quarterback who can get the job done,” and Sapp was adamant the Bucs won’t find better for next season.

The problem with the Bucs, Sapp continued, is that messy unit run by Todd Bowles.

“We can’t stop a nose bleed. That’s our problem in Tampa. We give up 35,” Sapp said.

Asked if the defense’s issues are personnel or attitude? Sapp didn’t hold back, taking aim at the shortcomings of Vita Vea and Ndamukong Suh.

“It’s everything. It’s everything right now because what we have is a pass rushing monster in the sack man on the outside, and then Pierre-Paul got himself back to where he can play the game again and, you know, be effective. We just don’t have a push up the middle,” Sapp said. “I love my defensive tackles the way they are against the run. But this ain’t a run-oriented league no more. Ain’t no more Earl Campbells and Tony Dorsetts and Walter Paytons, god bless his soul, and Barry Sanders. There’s no more of those. They throw this thing around. You got to be able to rush the passer.”

Sapp’s on the money regarding the Bucs’ inconsistent pass rush (tied for 15th in sacks) and the weak defense.

Overall, big plays have crushed the Bucs this season. Tampa Bay has allowed 49 pass plays of 20 yards or more. That’s on pace for more than last year. Chew on that nugget for a minute.

Sapp told Schein interceptions are demoralizing for a team, but he sure was adamant that the Bucs haven’t had a quarterback anywhere close to as good as Jameis in 35 years.

  1. Rod Munch Says:

Give Sapp, Brooks, Lynch, Barber, Rice, Keyshawn, Alstott, McCardell, Joe… give them Jameis Winston, and the Bucs would have had a dynasty.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

Winston remains on pace for 5,065 passing yards, which would be the sixth-highest mark in league history.

Also Winston is the best QB in team history without question. The only legit argument is Steve Young, but it’s hard to count his performance with the 49ers as being a Bucs history.

But man, the Bucs had Steve Young and drafted Bo Jackson… What an insane combo that would have been, if not in real life, at least for Tecmo Bowl.

  3. Anonymous Says:

Of course, Sapp, who lacks common sense to integrate into society, who seems to beat up on prostitutes, who can’t manage his fortune, also doesn’t quite understand that Winston is a direct part of the 35 points. 14 to be exact, plus giving the opponent repeated short fields. Thugs stick together. I’d expect nothing else out of the fat slob.

  4. Anonymous Says:

Rod Munch, speaking of real life, try living it. 5000 yards means nothing when it brings nothing. Winston’s yards are garbage yards. Pretty much you start 2-7, nothing really matters after that.

  5. Ace Says:

Jameis haters coming to trash this post soon. I’ll take the guy who has played opinion over these haters any day. Jameis is hands down best QB to ever put on a Bucs jersey

  6. Rod Munch Says:

Also Sapp is right about Vita. I literally wrote that earlier today on the mixed Joe’s reaction to Vita. I think Vita is doing what he should be doing and is doing it well, but the issue is his job is being a 3-4 run stuffing NT. In college Vita averaged just 3.5 sacks a year – so the idea he was the second coming of Sapp was always a stupid idea. As for helping the defense, what would be more useful than an all-pro safety right now… Not pro-bowl safety, but an all-pro, meaning he’s the best in the business, the very very best in the business.

But no use refighting the draft night. Vita is here, he’s doing what he’s told to do, teams can’t really run on the Bucs – but when you can throw the ball so easily, who cares about running? To bad we’re not playing Balitmore this year, that would have been an interesting matchup this time around.

  7. AwShbucs Says:

Vita Vea has 40+ QB pressures playing around 60% of snaps. Many of those pressures have led to sacks for others.

I’d agree we may need to upgrade at 3 tech. Suh is a force against the run and has exceptional gap integrity but offers little pass rush.

If somehow, some way, Derrick Brown out of Auburn is still available when we select, I think that would be a phenomenal pick. That dude next to Vita Vea would be a cheat code.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Sapp will never be happy with another DT……but, he is mostly correct. We can’t stop a nosebleed.

Our problem is getting burnt on big plays……QBs go deep on us and are successful. Our DBs are 3 rookies and 2 second year players….I think that has a lot to do with it.

  9. BucEmUp Says:

Vea has been getting held blatantly on just about evwry play since thw Seattle game. He is too powerful and they are not calling it. Its crap just like the rest of the officiating.

  10. donuts Says:

Sapp was a great player. Sapp is a terrible NFL analyst and decision maker in real life. Hence, he has no job in TV or coaching. The last time I saw him was at a Rays game wearing a wife beater (white undershirt) not kidding and acting like an ass as fans wanted to talk with him but he was being an a$$. Most walked away.
He lets his emotions dictate his thoughts. What does he know about playing QB? Zero. Thanks for the generic giving up 35 points is bad. I could have never come up with that without him.

  11. Dewey Selmon Says:

He complaining about giving up 35? The Qb threw his 5th pik6 of the year, and was indirectly responsible for 10 more points off his int’s. Score could of been 40+ to 17.

  12. Bucfan81 Says:

Sorry but you can’t put all the points that are given up on the defense when your quarterback is throwing pick sixes to the other team. Also you have to take in account how long the defense is on the field because of all the turn overs and the fact that they are put in bad positions when the quarterback turns the ball over on your side of the field 4-5 times a game kinda hard to defend that no matter how good your defense is.

  13. Slugglife Says:

    ACE

So you’ll take a what Sapp says over what anybody else says-because he shares your opinion. Do you also do that on other subjects with which you disagree with the comments of former players who have, you know- played the game?

Of course you don’t. The guys you disagree with are dumb, has beens, or don’t know their ass from elbow, right?

  14. TiredBucsFan Says:

I guess you can call me a Jameis hater, having said that I was happy when we drafted him. I was hopeful that he would become a hof quarterback. He is terrific at times but his mistakes tend to out weigh the good plays. 3 turnovers a game is too much. The defense gives up 35 points per game because they are trying to stop a short field for the opposition after a turnover. The turnovers a killers. I dont care what defense is out there. Too many turnovers. Jameis is sometimes able to lead us to comback wins, but we have to comeback because of the hole he helped put us in. After 5 years I dont see him changing. If the Bucs are ok with having all the turnovers then I think hes the best choice. If you want to protect the ball, move on.

  15. Slugglife Says:

Notice with Jameis- the conversation and debate makes you hater or a nut hugger. Nobody can be in between. Nobody can be tired of losing. Nobody can be tired of the 4th place NFCS finishes.

Nope, just a hater. No wonder the stadium is empty. It’s the loser mentality that’s been ingrained in this fan base. Living on stats and not wins. The Saints are looking to lock up playoffs and division about the time we start talking next years draft every season. Fun huh? But look at those stats man!

  16. Steve Munoz Says:

It ain’t on Vita Vea bro. He’s a nose tackle! He’s taking up double teams all the time! And even at that he still has 40 QB pressures! That’s insane for a nose tackle. Vea isn’t lighting up the stat sheet because that’s not his job. And I can think of a lot of sacks where Vea doesn’t get the sack but plays a huge roll in the team getting the sack

  17. Tackleblockwin Says:

Some of you on here may remember after our SB when Carolina was able to run the ball down our throat at will. I personally like having 2 DT that stuff the run most of the time. I realize that passing the ball is favored these days. However, most teams that can run the ball well will do so. There are a lot of advantages in having a top run defense, especially in close games and in the 4th quarter. Nothing more frustrating then a defense getting slashed by a good running game imo.

  18. Buc believer Says:

Getting rid of Jameis would be like going to Berns steakhouse and getting your dinner served and it is cooked perfectly but sending it back anyway because the guy at the next table ordered cheesecake for desert and got chocolate cake instead. Just doesn’t make any sense!

  19. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Sapp is 100% right!!!!!!………………as usual

Vea is a pocket moving monster…..and plays the run nicely and every now and then you see him get to the QB…..but that’s it.

The Secondary is the #1 problem

  20. Ace Says:

Slugglife.. who is better out there? what are the options? i am a Jameis fan but at the same time a realist. The team around him was trash until this year. We finally have better coaching and are getting more out of the players.. how many picks came from tipped balls? How many of his career picks came from him firing to get us back in the game? We usually play from being down and chasing to get back in the game so obviously you are going to have to take some shots downfield that may get picked. I said i am taking what Sapp said over you couch GM’s and i will stick by it. My opinion. I don’t agree with everything i see or read here just because i have the same view. I just feel that way about the Jameis topic.

  21. Alanbucsfan Says:

Of the 25 sack leaders, only 1 is a DT- Aaron Donald. And even though his numbers are down a little from last year (Suh is no longer a Ram) he is still a beast.

  22. Bob in Valrico Says:

But Warren, lets look at our DT’s play as compared to Sheldon Rankins who Joe used as a comparison recently.

PD Sacks TFL FR QB hits Solo Tackles TD’s Games
    Vea 3 1.5 2 9 15 13
    SUH 1.5 4 4 11 15 2 13
    Rankins 2.0 2 5 7 10

Looks like both our Dt’s are playing at a higher level this year. Suh has been a super addition to this team also.

  23. The Buc Realist Says:

    and for those keeping score!!!!!!!!!!!

Loser Frazier 25.6 Points Allowed per Game (16 games)
Loser Lovie – 26.1 Points Allowed per Game (16 games)
Coach Smitty -24.97 Points Allowed Per Game ( 37 games)
mark duffner – 26.45 Points Allowed Per Game ( 11 games)
toilet bowles – 29.3 Points Allowed Per Game ( 13 games)

Pretty telling stats that the local media and sheep will never say or talk about !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!

  24. Bob in Valrico Says:

Chart didn’ t work out so well.
    Vea had 3 pass defensed,1.5 sacks,2 TFL, 9 QB hits, and 15 solo’s, 0 Td’s and 0 fmbles recovered in 13 games.
    Rankins had 0 pass defensed, 2 sacks, 2 TFL, 5 QB hits and 7 solo’s, 0 TD,s, and 0 fumbles recovered in 10 games.
Suh had 0 Pass defensed, 1.5 sacks, 4 TFL’s, 4 fumbles recovered, 11 QB hits,
    2 TD’s and 15 solo’s in 13 games.
Suh’s extra contributions of 4 fumble recovered and 2 TD’s makes him an invaluable addition.

  25. ClodHopper Says:

I take issues with that nose bleed comment. The defense as improved slightly. They can stop a nose bleed now. Little else but they’ve worked their way up to stopping a nose bleed.

  26. Defense Rules Says:

I agree with Donuts. Sapp was a great player but he’s a terrible analyst. Vea & Suh are beasts inside, and they’re the primary reason that Barrett started off so hot this year IMO (JPP returning to the lineup has helped Shaq continue getting sacks & pressures, as have Vea & Suh).

To say that this is a ‘passing league’ is myopic. Winning teams ‘do what they have to do to win’. If you can’t stop the run, winning teams will run on you a lot more, then chew you up & spit you out. Buffalo (9-4) is fairly BALANCED in their offensive attack, as are Baltimore (11-2), Minnesota (9-4), San Francisco (11-2) and Seattle (10-3). All (except Seattle) have very good defenses BTW to go along with their rushing attack. Our offense typically doesn’t do good against Top-10 defenses from what I’ve seen.

Bucs have a great combination right now in Vea & Suh. They’ve done fantastic IMO in run defense & in tying up blockers so Barrett & JPP & Nassib can feed. And BTW, Bucs’ defense has been charged with giving up 381 points, putting them at #31 in scoring defense. IMO 37 of those points belong to the offense AS A MINIMUM (5 Pick-6 & 1 safety); quite a few more if you consider the short fields the defense has had to defend because of many of the OTHER 27 turnovers from our offense. Despite having an incredibly young Secondary and missing JPP & White for several games in the first half of the season, this defense has improved quite steadily. Take away the excessive impact of the offense’s turnovers on the defense, we’d likely rank someplace between #20 & #25.

For Sapp to say that this defense ‘couldn’t stop a nosebleed’ is total BS. He’s also bad at math apparently … 381 points in 13 games comes out to 29.3 PPG not his exaggerated 35 PPG. And without the offense’s excessive turnovers, it’d likely be down to 25 PPG or less.

  27. Coburn Says:

Eh… brad johnson may have been a journeyman most of his career and was a late bloomer, but for that brief window of a couple years I still feel he’s the best we’ve had. People thinj our line is bad now… hakf of it is Winston holding onto it and not having an internal clock. Brad was smart and still took a beating at times but he just kept on ticking. Had some prettt good targets but could only imagine if he had what we do now.

  28. tmaxcon Says:

    Rod munch

The only thing that prevented multiple championships was the inept dungy the clown. His offensive ignorance and coaching scared philosophy made the bucs pretenders never contenders…that is undisputed pal… dungy the clown wasted the defense whyche built for his sorry arse…. low standard bucfan attempts to rewrite history daily but those are the facts….. dungy should have spent more time reading offensive manuals than telling others how to live thier lives….. probably should have thrown in a fathering manual at some point too…

  29. Todd Says:

We have a clinical “if/when” problem of which there is no cure absent complete abstention.

It’s not IF Jameis will destroy momentum in a game with a stupid decision or four, it’s WHEN.

He’s adept enough, with continued development, to get us 9 to 10 wins a year…but then he’ll fall back on his risky instincts and poor judgment to eliminate our team from EVER winning it all.

If “putting a fu(king ring on the finger” is indeed the macro goal, we need to hit CTRL-ALT-WINSTON and “risk” another QB solution.

As an offensive-minded sage once declared, “No risk it, no biscuit.”

I don’t just want the biscuit, I want LADLES of gravy poured on top.

  30. ModHairKen Says:

Cancer 99 at his best. Go away, Raider and hotel idiot.

  31. tmaxcon Says:

Congrats for finally using the word legendary properly. Its the the first time in a long time you have not associated legendary with a hack or backup…. hopefully its s sign of you accepting reality that bucs only have 2 legends …

  32. TOM Says:

I take what Sapp says with a grain of salt. The best QB we had was Steve Young.

  50. Parish Says:

A lot of Jameis hate here, blaming him for all the points lmao. As if we hadn’t had the league’s worst defense (bottom 3 at best) over the past 3 seasons. Most yds given up per game, most points given up per game. As if we don’t have one of the worst rushing attacks in the entire league (no 100 yard rusher in like 3 years I believe) and before this year the worst kicking game in the league for 2 seasons. (Matt gay is doing great overall I think but did still lose us the Giants game, which was after the defense allowed a last minute TD and Jameis got us in position to win with UNDER A MINUTE TO PLAY) Not saying Jameis is perfect but you bashers are the most bias group of fans if I’ve ever seen one. Talking about Sapps personal life as if that pertains to his football opinion, he’s right we have one of the worst defenses in football overall. I do believe we’re improving lately but it is one of the worst, that’s just a fact

Sapp really doesn’t like that Vea and the second run stopping defense are helping sack Barrett almost break his record.

  53. Wesley Says:

Lol Vea has been a beast and will/should make the pro bowl.

  54. Anonymous Says:

How many of Winston’s interceptions came off of tipped balls and receivers not completing or running the correct route???

  55. Buczilla Says:

A.J. Epenesa (dt/de from Iowa) could take Suh’s spot on the line and potentially add more pass rush. We probably need to lose two out of the next three to have a shot at him though. (Sorry, starting to get excited about the draft despite Licht and I’m a nerd).

  56. Bruce Says:

I have hadmixed feelings about Jamis all year. But you can’t let someone like him walk out the door. Yes he turns the ball over but he’s never had a defence that could get it back. If our defence continues to improve we will win with jamis. If our defence played all season the way they played the last month we make the playoffs this year! How do you let 5000 yards passing just walk out the door?

  57. Pickgrin Says:

Defense overall is playing a good bit better the last few games.

Stats wise it will be a tale of two seasons for this defense.

Looking at stats for the year as a whole will be meaningless foder for easy criticism in the coming offseason.
