Brett Farve On Jameis

December 11th, 2019

“I hear ya Warren. Jameis has mad skills. You made me believe.”

Just like last year, this football season Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre co-hosts a weekly hour-long show heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Last year a caller suggested that Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, was a lot like a young Favre. And the former Packers great bristled at the comparison and pushed back.

Yesterday, when Favre’s co-host Bruce Murray brought up Jameis’ name, Favre seemed to almost embrace a comparison.

At one point Murray asked Favre who was the last quarterback to have at least 27 picks in a season, a number Jameis is closing in on. Favre said, “I’m thinking that maybe it was your co-host.”

(Five times Favre threw for over 20 interceptions in a season and in 2005 led the NFL with 29 picks.)

Yes Favre, despite being in the Hall of Fame, was known for a few things: a cannon of an arm and throwing picks. And yards. And touchdowns.

In discussing Jameis, Favre mentioned what Jameis is going through in the early stages of the Bucco Bruce Arians regime is a lot like he went through with Mike Holmgren in Green Bay.

“I think with Jameis there is such a huge upside,” Favre said. “I think there is such a tremendous upside. You are willing to try to work through [the picks]. I think Bruce [Arians] will do a wonderful job. [Jameis is] super productive, aside from the interceptions.”

Then Favre began to relate stories of how Holmgren would try to help Favre cut down on picks, to no avail. And the way Favre described himself is exactly to the very word what Joe has been told about Jameis and his mentality.

Favre said Holmgren would call a play that had three layers, or options. Dump-off pass, intermediate and a bomb. The bomb, of course, was the riskiest and Favre often preferred the bomb regardless of the defense.

“My arm strength was a huge asset but it also hurt me,” Favre said. “‘You call it; I’m throwing it.’ And I would do it. And it would get me in trouble. Sometimes it would work.”

This is exactly what Joe was told about Jameis more than once, and one of those times it came straight from the mouth of Dirk Koetter in a private sitdown Joe had with Koetter one evening.

A Bucs source told Joe a couple of years ago that Jameis is old school in the sense that if a coach calls a play, he’s going to run it. In Jameis’ mindset, he wants what his coach ordered and will carry out the marching orders. Jameis’ (over?) confidence in his arm also adds to the miscues.

(Remember how Jameis told Koetter before the Bucs drafted him that he wasn’t afraid to make any throw?)

Joe told Koetter a story he read of Johnny Unitas where Unitas told the author, “You aren’t a pro quarterback until you can tell your coach to go to hell.” Koetter’s eyes lit up and said, “He’s right!” Koetter often said defenses would change alignments after a play was sent in and he thought to himself, “Oh, no,” realizing that play was now doomed.

Koetter sort of wanted Jameis to, in effect, tell him to go to hell with his playcall and have Jameis audible to a better play. If that took place, it didn’t happen near enough for Koetter’s liking.

Favre also noted that as much as Jameis may be learning Arians and his offense, Arians is learning about Jameis and trying to figure out how to restrict some plays that may get Jameis in trouble.

Jameis is “productive,” Favre said. “You don’t want to take the ball out of his hands that much. … Sometimes it is OK not to get a first down. And that took me a long time to digest.”

Sound familiar?

Favre basically said Jameis’ picks are nothing to freak about, so long as the Bucs are winning.

“Are you winning?” Favre asked in discussing Jameis’ future with the Bucs. “Throwing five touchdowns and throwing three picks or four picks and losing the game, if that is more and more frequent then at some time you have to cut your losses.

“But if you are winning and occasionally have a loss where you go, ‘You know, if he had not thrown that one we would have won,’ then you can deal with it.”

There is no debate. Jameis is the best QB this franchise has had. I’m all in. I will take the bad with the good. I saw him drop the iPad last week and put his head in his hands. And then come back and win.

    It’s all about winning.

Same dude, different skin color. That’s why a lot of “fans” hate Jameis and lionize Favre.

  4. TexBuc Says:

Bucs used to have to play GB twice a year and I always admired his gun slinger mentality instead of run, run, try to throw on 3rd and long then punt. So I have enjoyed having an offense with Winston at QB.

    Pretty racist Mort

    Winston IS the offense.

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Favre is my all-time favorite QB…… I would watch GB games only cause of Favre.

Favre was accurate with any pass…….. Unlike Jameis

Favre made alot of smart decisions……. Unlike Jameis

Favre knew how to look off defenses…… Unlike Jamies

Favre arm was stronger…… Unlike Jameis

Favre didn’t fumble the ball away often……. Unlike Jameis

GIMME A FREAKING BREAK!!!!!!!!!! FAVRE WAS TOTALLY ON ANOTHER LEVEL!!!!!!!………. unlike Jameis

There is NO comparison between a Hall of Fame QB and the human turnover machine.

First of all Brett Farve won a SB, Jameis did not….
Second , everybody already knows the good things about JW, sometimes is really impressive, but everybody also knows his weakness, its public, is called STATS!!!!!Don´t cheat on yhoursel¡f and look all of them, not just the ones you preferr.

Their are two very arguable questions.
1- Can we get into a SB with JW?
    2- Can we replace him?

    my answers are…
    1- Most probable NO
2- Not now, maybe in the future.

Besides I think that 99% JW will be next year on bucs uniform, the situation seems very very interesting and confusing….

When Favre would throw a long ball and get picked, it’s like a punt and doesn’t hurt you that much.

Winston serves it up in terrible positions and it’s nothing like a punt. (and don’t forget all his fumbles)

Excitement blah blah blah but Winston is the 17th ranked quarterback in the league by total qbr.

So he’s perfect if you enjoy mediocrity.

  12. ou812 Says:

Upside ???? Upside??? In year 5!!! The kiss of death.

  13. Bobby M Says:

The other side to this chatter is Vinny Testerverde. Which is more what Winston reminds me of. Great college career, huge arm talent, constant turnover machine even with elite offensive weapons around him.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    My case is made.

Ironically, a couple of years ago Brett Favre denied ever being the way he just admitted to being. I guess old age improves honesty.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If we get rid of Winston, we are doing it right when he is about to turn that corner. The picks will always be an issue with him, but so long as he scores TD, gets the yards and wins the majority of games, it won’t matter.

People forget that when Favre was with Green Bay, they had a great offense and the great defense.

That’s what Winston needs. And the team is almost there.

  17. Jeff Says:

Hate to say it but race is playing a big part in people’s opinions. Unconscious bias here, no doubt.

  18. 941bucsfan Says:

@BUCSANTHEM brett favre had more fumbles through his first 5 years than Jameis. Stop shouting out stuff if you aint gonna stat check.if brett favre arm was so strong, looked off defenses so well and made better decisions than jameis, then why did he have the same amount of turnovers as jameis early in his career?

  19. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Race has ZERO to do with this, jameis is equal to vinny T and that is the plain and simple truth; the bucs let vinny walk and it turned out ok. I think the bucs should franchise shaq and let jameis see what is out there or offer him a 4 year $75 million contract give him 40-50 up front and team friendly deal

  20. Robert Says:

    favre, manning

WTF is this site smoking. not even in the same caliber of those cats. doesn’t have ANYTHING other than a few hand picked stats to put him in the same sentence.

  21. Robert Says:

    race, race, race…….blah blah blah.

raplesburger is a POS as well and those who throw the R card are the ones who should look in the mirror.

  22. 941bucsfan Says:

Honestly mort is right. Alot of it has to do with race. None of these fans actually wanted Jameis. They defend Checkdown mariota by bringing up his winning percentage but fail to mention his Division, running game and defense. 90% of these folks that follow this site that will take Wentz over Lamar Jackson right now.

  23. Robert Says:

  25. 941bucsfan Says:

Raheem Morris the coach who the owners wouldnt let spend a dime in free agency to approve this team, got ran out the door by fans…. Yet he was closest thing to the playoffs since chucky left. Leftwich was getting ran out by the fans early in the year. With folks commenting stuff like “we shouldve kept monken”. Todd bowles is not in the racial crosshairs yet because he is a d coordinator. But could u imagine if he was our head coach and he was 6-7 right now. Oh the pitch forks would be out for sure. Just speaking the truth guys. I may not be talking to any of you directly, but if race has nothing to do with jameis, then You dont have to comment on my opinion.

  26. AwShbucs Says:

Anthem… Favre holds the record for Fumbles you ignoramous.

Also Jameis is considered to have one if the stronger arms in the league. You clearly don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.

  27. Aceofaerospace Says:

Some jackass always has to throw race into the debate. Could it be the the Packers were consistent winners with Favre? If the Bucs start consistently winning, and the ints don’t equate to multiple loses a year, no one will care. Racism. Such a cheap argument.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    zzbuc Says
“First of all Brett Farve won a SB, Jameis did not…”

    Yet.

I realize that seeing Jameis as a potential superbowl QB right now is next to impossible, so I don’t hold that against you…but consider this: Patriots fans felt the same way about the 6th round pick who replaced Drew Bledsoe at first as well.

Another good comparison is Jake Plummer, who had interception issues but still won games.

The thing to remember is that Dirk Koetter was not a teacher. He governed by expectations. That can work for some coaches and players, but it isn’t great for developing a QB. In fact, how much development took place under Koetter?

Practically none. Which is why some people feel the way they do about Winston.

Arians and his staff are teachers, and we are already seeing changes in Winston.

Think about it. Last year…well, for the past several years…Winston has had the yards of a good QB, but little else. Now, under less than a year with Arians, his production is way up. He is on pace for 5,000 yards, and he has the second most TDs in the league for a QB.

    What’s next? Wins? Reducing interceptions?

My point is, we are seeing improvements in Winston, and more time with Arians could very well turn him into the elite QB we need.

So a team friendly contract could be a great idea. Pay him the money in exchange for reduced guarantees. That way, if he does not reach his potential, we can dump him without penalty.

Otherwise, we risk rebooting the QB Curse.

  29. ou812 Says:

Is not Mariota also a minority??? Race is not a factor here bad QB play is!!!

  32. 941bucsfan Says:

Exactly Licht Headed. Redskins fans couldnt wait to push RG3 out in favor of cousins, now they trying to sabotage Haskins… its all over the league guys… and its here and tampa too. When Im at the game, Jameis could have pressure in his face and check the ball down to the running back, and folks would be upset that he didnt see Perriman Wide open 50 yards down field. Jameis will never win over these fans… he’a the wrong color. Exactly why Doug williams is still mad at this team

  33. TampaTown Says:

Hmm… same mindset, same positives and negatives. One has a SuperBowl, the other one not yet. So what is the only other difference between the two? Hmm…

Those of you that accept my plea..thanks 100 times..for those who don’t, if need be a got a race card for ya! And I don’t mind using it::Orlando Kevin ..Robert and I got a few more cards left! BRING BACK BA…GET FAMOUS’s name on a contract…KEEP bringing in talent KEEP GRINDING!!

  35. ou812 Says:

It’s all about winning. Then Brad Johnson / Trent Dilfer are sadly the only 2 Buc QB with a .500 record. Don’t need the gunslinger . We need a vet QB to protect the ball and keep building the defense .Dose anyone really think the Gazer’s are going to roll with just Jameis next year? Jameis better get used to a real QB looking over his shoulder!!!

  37. Mitch Says:

I can’t believe people haven’t mentioned that Favre has the most turnovers of all time 166 fumbles and over 320 picks…. If you look at JW he is on pace to just about match him. At Favre’s best he had a dominant defense and a great offensive line + run game. He also never threw less than 13 picks a season he was a starter except his second to last as a Viking. The difference between Jamies and Favre is that Favre benefited from a balanced team whereas Jameis has been stuck with a putrid defense and a running game with little pulse.

  38. ou812 Says:

    BIG HOG

  39. Dapostman Says:

    ou812 is correct.

The Bucs don’t need a gunslinger when the DEFENSE gives up about 12-15 pts a game. Problem is Sapp, Brooks, Rice, Barber and Lynch probably aren’t coming through the door at OneBucPlace.

Even if this defense gets down to 23-24 pts a game which is average your offense still needs to be better than average not the Brad Johnson/Dilfer offense.

  41. DalvinCookRules Says:

I feel validated to hear Favre saying what I’ve been saying since Arians was hired, which is that it will take TIME for Arians and new staff to figure out what plays to call and NOT call to minimize JW’s weaknesses.

I’ve watched this guy play since high school and that’s why i have routinely criticized Leftwich’s playcalling– because they tend to expose Winston’s weaknesses instead of masking them. It is no accident that Winsto’s turnover rate SPIKED this season despite Winston getting better overall as a QB.

  42. Marine Buc Says:

Sign Shaq Barrett and franchise tag Winston. If Winston can lower his number of turnovers next year we should sign Winston to a long term deal.

Did everyone forget Doug Williams? He was our QB and we loved him here in Tampa. It was @ 40 years ago. The idiot owner chased him away and we never forgave him for that. We don’t give a darn about race. Just win football games.

What is wrong with some of you race baiting clowns in here? Get a life please.

  43. ChanEpic Says:

Leave it to JW haters to quibble with a HOF QB’s take on another QB. Who knew most of the JBF posters are actually SUPER HOF QBs that know more than Favre, BA and BL.

  44. TheBucsAnthem Says:

All this hate being spewed is Non Sense………I also love watching Randall Cunningham and Warren Moon play as well….. and everyone loved seeing Michael Vick shredding defenses.

So stop pushing the “Race” agenda or narrative……..it’s getting old people.

  45. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ DalvinCookRules

And you don’t think his turnovers have spiked because he’s a another system / playbook??? Carlson Palmer went through the same thing in Arizona with Arians.

The problem is that JW has been this way through three coaches now…..and you can clearly tell Koetter did all he could do to cut down on turnovers.

    Coaches don’t win games……players do.

  46. Anonymous Says:

ou812 …yes 5 years, 4 of which was spent with second rate coaching…he’s still young, still has more upside than most STARTING QB”s today! And one other thing bring on the competition at QB it will only make him better…he won’t bow-down or buckle to that kind of pressure …didn’t you see the game we won SUNDAY …more wins to come….feel bad for BIG MIKE but is Perriman and Miller Time GO BUCS !!

  47. SwashBuccler Says:

I am Caucasian and I am a JW fan. I don’t care what anyone says about it, I like and root for, who I like! I know a lot of people, like me in color, who are JW fans. Its our opinion if we think he is a Talented QB or not, or if he has the team around him needed to get to the next level, etc. yada yada yada…. I could care less if you have an opposite opinion – good for you. I am surprised how many people think this is a race issue. Many Black people dont like Favre, many do like Favre. Does that make them all racist? No, but who can be sure? There will always be favoritism and racists out there but I think its less about racism then performance. Many people have valid points to not like JW…he has numbers to make them not like him. Get over it!! You cannot make people like him if they do not! Those crying racism seem to me, to be the one’s perpetuating racism!!

  48. Mitch Says:

Anthem exactly players do. Plural meaning not just one.

  49. FanO’Bucs Says:

Does anyone else see that Winston has to run for his life on nearly every passing play?

  50. View from 132 Says:

Joe, there should instead be a formal comparison of Jameis and Dilfer, not Jameis and Favre. Jameis doesn’t play like Favre… he plays like Dilfer. Big arm, big man, occasionally flashes of why he was a top pick… and then boneheaded plays that keep the other team in the game and ultimately lose a few per year.

Jameis doesn’t look off safeties, has plenty of inaccuracy on easy throws, and limited touch. When Favre had the ball EVERY receiver on the field, no matter at what odd angle or how many yards away, could potentially be open. That is what made Favre so good, and what drove defenses mad – guys that weren’t open, that seemingly weren’t even in the play suddenly got a 90MPH fastball in the chest.

The only reasonable Favre comparison on the field today is maybe Mahomes. Similar ability plus a bit more mobile (though Favre played when you could really hit QBs, too).

  51. From76 Says:

I don’t think you can upgrade in the draft over Winston. He is a turnover machine. That can be corrected. You could start correcting it with with olineman. Draft one or two or sign a free agent. He is not getting enough time and our rushing sucks. But you can’t break the bank to keep him either. Good luck Licht.

The turnovers has been going on for 5 years and he’s now on his third coach

……………he ain’t changing and neither are his turnover ways

  53. Marine Buc Says:

I agree. Winston needs better protection and his turnovers will probably decrease. We need to draft at least two new lineman this year and sign a decent free agent tackle (Trent Williams?) in order to give to rookies a year or two to settle in.

And how about Mr Farve himself sending d!¢k pics to female NY Jet staffers? Why is that never brought up when talking about those guys? And I’m just talking about Jameis’ play. Why isn’t he more favorably compared to Favre when now Favre himself is pointing it out?! Come on man

  59. Mitch Says:

Favre first five years (as a starter) : 14,825 yards 147 TD’s and 77 INTs
    Jamies first five years: 18,743 yards 114 td’s and 81 int’s

If only over the past few years still we had an average 16th ranked pass defense & 16th in points allowed per game along with with just small improvement on pass protection and at the least a respectable run game Jamies is a winner. I am sure of it. No one man can win for a team. Jamies did his part and then for a time tried to do more than that because he has no choice.

  60. RCK Says:

Just had myself a peek at some stats. Winston vs Farve. Over his career Farve averaged 16.2 interceptions per season. Jameis comes in at 16.8. Eerily similar. Now, I am seriously on the fence in regards to Jameis but could this whole interception thing be a bit over hyped? Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not like Bret won 4 SB’s. But the guy is a hall of famer and he sure was exciting to watch.

It’s Favre, he’s a Hall-of-Famer, please spell his name correctly. While we’re on the topic, it’s Ronde without an H. Mike Alstott, not Mark, Chris Simms, not Sims. Charles or Ryan Sims, not Simms. Jameis not Jamies…. and for the record, IDGAF how you spell Igwebuike.

  63. Brandon Says:

Favre had four seasons of 20 or more picks, six seasons of 4000 or more yards, and five seasons of less than 80 rating… and that’s over 20 seasons… he led the league in INTS three times. In five seasons, Winston has one 20 or more INT season, led the league in INTs once, has had three 4000 yard seasons, and zero seasons under 80 rating.

FWIW, Favre almost always had a stellar defense and usually had a decent running game (Dorsey Levens, Ahman Green)…. two things Jameis has never had.

I hate Jameis turning the ball over, but the Brett Favre comparison is dead on. Joe has been right this whole time… No, i don’t love the picks, but you get this guy some D and a decent running game, and we’re talking about an All-Pro.

I don’t think this is a race issue, i think this is a wins to losses issue, an off-field issue, and an interception issue with most people. Josh Freeman was well-liked and he happened to be black, Doug Wiliams is thought of fondly as well. I support Jameis but I don’t support the notion that he isn’t being given a fair shake because his skin color. He’s made tons of mistake on and off the field. Lots of people aren’t fans of Ben Roethlisberger either for the off-field stuff. That being said, there are legit racist fans that judge players more harshly either way. They assume black QBs can’t be pocket passers and that white RBs and CBs don’t exist because white people can’t run.

    ———————-

Your hero was known for making stupid decisions, like Jameis.

Your hero led the league in INTs three times in his career, unlike Jameis.

Your hero threw 20 or more INTs in a season during his career, unlike Jameis.

Your hero threw for 4000 yards or more in a season six times in 20 seasons (30%), Jameis has done it three times in five seasons (60%)

Your hero had QB ratings of under 80 six times in his career, Jameis has never been below 84.2.

Your hero had defenses from 94 to 97 that were ranked 9th, 4th, 5th, 1st, and 5th in the league in scoring defense. Five straight years ranked top 10 in scoring defense… Jameis has never had anything close to that,.. As a matter of fact, when Favre played with the Packers and their D was in the bottom half of the league or worse, their record was usually not good…and Favre played his worst.

The Winston Favre comparison is very valid.

  71. WillieG Says:

For those who claim people love Favre but hate JW because of racism, you’re actually showing your racism. People love Favre because he won. If JW had 3-4 winning seasons under his belt and a playoff win or two, we wouldn’t give a rat’s ass about the interceptions. But he doesn’t. He throws back breaking, game killing picks and has 1 winning season. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with performance, so quit using racism as an excuse every time a black man is held to the same standard as others.

Did you even suffer through Vinny and Trent, Dude? Puhleeze. Take off your trifocals. It doesn’t even matter what side I come down on. You are demonstrably wrong. Go read some St Pete Times from the 80s and 90s.

    @Brandon:

My point is that Jameis has already completed his 4th year as a starter, and almost completed his 5th year as a starter in the NFL, and has never come close to being a 1st Team All-Pro, let alone the league MVP. Furthermore, I will be SHOCKED if he achieves either of those distinctions at age 26, 27 or 28.

Yes I’ve suffered through it all probably the same as you. I think Jameis is playing better than Vinny or Trent when they were here five years. It just seems like the criticism is much more personal with Jameis. Or maybe it’s just how society is going these days.

  75. Rod Munch Says:

As a Bucs fans, there was no one I loved to root against more than Favre. I remember the play where Culpepper tore off Favre’s shoe and threw it across the field and Favre had to limp over to get his shoe back. Well from the stands we didn’t see the shoe part, we just saw Favre limping – and this was around the time all the stories about Favre’s drug and alcohol abuse came out. Anywho, in the stands at the old stadium, surrounded by thousands of Packers fans who are panicking because Favre appears to be limping, I’m yelling as loud as I can, “just make it to the sidelines Brett, they got drugs for you there, you love drugs you drunk”… It was such a fun day. That same day someone had a Lombardi head on a stick type of print out thing, and I asked someone if I could borrow theirs for a second, then I shoved it down the back of my pants and gave it back to them… Also getting into the stadium a ton of Packers fans were in a line, so I just walked up to the front of the line, then showed my season tickets and said this is a season tickets only holder line, if you have a regular ticket you need to be in another line, and of course I was lying, but like 200 people all got into a different line…

There was more too, that I can’t write here since Joe would ban me, but it was related to telling kids what the Packers name stands for. But man was the late-1990s a fun time. Everyone talked trashed, words didn’t hurt, and the Bucs were just becoming good and I got to take out over a decade of Bucs losing on opposing fans.

  76. Jason S. Mclaurin Says:

Im loving what Favre had to say about Jameis. Im from Hattiesburg MS where Brett lives and went to college. He said some point blank truths and analyzed Jameis better than anyone to date. I honestly feel they could do him a favor and get a top tier caliber back instead of going developmental at the poisition. There seem to be none in this draft either so our next best plan to improving Jameis surrounding is offensive line upgrade and going top tier at that position. Honestly though I think the only thing they should draft on the front is RG and C. I like Watford but I feel we should just upgrade and move Cappa to the outside or draft a RT as well especially if we can somehow and someway Licht finally finds a way to obtain 2 first round draft picks like every other GM in Tampa has done. You know Dominik, Rich McKay who will soon own the falcons and Bruce Allen.

  77. T REX Says:

Idiots that can’t read…FAVRE also said cut him if he keep throwing picks.

BTW: Culpepper played for the Vikings, and played QB, so it seems implausible “that he tore the shoe off Favre”. In fact, some might suggest that you were the one “drunk or on drugs that day”.

Omg I think I’m in love with you. I HATE the Packers to this day! Got into a fight with some Packer fans then went and got security, I said they were picking on me because I’m a girl, and security took out four of them while everyone in my section (114) was yelling $hit at them. Security guy puts one Packer fan in handcuffs so I slapped him hard on the side of the head. He lunges at me, and the security guy slams his head on the metal railing in the aisle. Nah nah nah nah, nah nah 😝
