7 Key Happenings At Saturday’s Vipers Practice

December 15th, 2019

Viper QB Quinton Flowers is in a quarterback battle. Enjoy your need-to-know from Vipers practice in Plant City.

Season ticket holders were out to watch their new XFL Tampa Bay Vipers team hit the field for their third underwear football practice of the inaugural offseason. It was VIPer Day (like VIP with an er at the end)!

Here are the highlights:

Not a good start for Vipers QB Quinton Flowers, who is battling at the position with Aaron Murray, the former University of Georgia standout.

Two plays in a row go for no gain. Flowers is known for using his legs, but his legs get him nowhere against the Vipers defense early.

Murray is a bit up-and-down in the second 11-on-11 session. On the first play, he delivers a perfect strike to the former Gators and Jacksonville Jaguars tight end DeAndre Goolsby for a big gain. On the next play, he was late on his throw and it was easily picked by the safety Robenson Therezie out of Auburn. He still looks to be the best QB on the roster, but it definitely wasn’t his best session.

Defense! What else would the city of Tampa be used to? The Vipers defense forces two fumbles in the first three plays of 11-on-11, the second being taken back to the house by safety Robert Priester, formerly of the CFL and the University of Wyoming.

1-on-1 battles get underway and this Jalen Tolliver continues to have a strong start to the offseason. The receiver out of Arkansas-Monticello badly beats Priester along the sideline and hauls in a 40-yard bomb from Murray.

Vipers season ticket holders were invited to practice

Uh oh. Following 1-on-1’s, Trestman brings the whole team in for a huddle. Why? Trestman answered that after practice. “Well, I think the team, you know, everyday we try to take the team to an edge. The team got to that edge today. And I think there were some teaching moments, and wanted to just bring them together to understand, you know, what happened, why it happened, and that when things happen through the course of the game, whether they’re good or bad, to us, you know, we can’t let it linger, we got to go on to the next play, and that was the message.”

Special teams trouble for the Vipers. Both kickers Andrew Franks (Rensselaer Polytechnic) and Matthew Wright (UCF) lined up to try 52-yard shots. On Franks’ kick, the long snapper Nick Moore (Georgia) let off a terrible snap and the kick falls about 10 yards short of the posts. Following the kick, a coach was heard yelling, “That’s not good enough, Nick!” On the next play, the snap is perfect, and Wright’s kick easily clears the uprights.

Oh man, we have on-field drama. Wide receiver Jawill Davis (Bethune-Cookman) made a nice catch and was sprinting down the sideline when linebacker Terrance Plummer (UCF) grabbed the hood of his undershirt and yanked it back, nearly bringing him to the ground. In a real game it would’ve been a horse collar tackle for sure. It was then that receiver Tanner McEvoy (Wisconsin) ran up to Plummer and used some choice words to express how he felt about the play. He said, “Hey 41, don’t do that (bleep)! Be a (bleep)-ing teammate!” Trestman had to get involved to calm them down.

The Vipers have today off before kicking off their 3-day minicamp on Monday. After that, the players won’t be together until training camp in early January.

Okay, I thought I was going all in as a Viper fan but I didn’t know it involved snake handling.

It’s no surprise Quinton Flowers failed at the NFL level. All college QBs who primarily run the ball don’t know how to stand tall in the pocket and read defenses………it’s been proven time and time again…just look at Tim Tebow as your #1 example as a NFL QB failure.

    Quinton be on that rock……

If snake handling is involved, No Thanks.
