Shaq Plans To Play In Tampa Bay

December 18th, 2019

Talks return.

Unless something changes, the current NFL sacks leader is going to prep in the offseason as if he’s the sackmeister of Tampa Bay.

That’s the word from Bucs outside linebacker Shaq Barrett.

Currently tied with Warren Sapp for a franchise record 16.5 sacks in his first season with the Bucs, a big worry for fans is if Barrett, an unrestricted free agent in a few weeks, won’t return to the Bucs.

Despite Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht saying on the public’s airwaves he wants Shaq back, and Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians saying in his postgame remarks on Sunday that Barrett “ain’t goin’ anywhere,” nothing is locked in stone until Barrett is signed.

Barrett already said he doesn’t want to move and today, Barrett admitted wherever he is next year will be with a team he thinks he can win on. And given how the Bucs have won four of their last five games to pull to 7-7, Barrett said he would hate to leave the Bucs just as the defense has turned the corner.

“I want to be here,” Barrett said. “I am still going back to Colorado, train and stuff there but as far as my plans go, I plan on being back here to start OTAs and [the offseason].”

It can get any more plain than that.

Now it takes Barrett to put the pen to the paper. Question is, will that be a franchise tag or a hefty multiyear contract?

Bucs have plenty of cap room to sign Winston and Shaq….I think that’s a given. Shaq’s ultimate concern will be guaranteed money, that’s his priority. He may only see one major contract so its in his best interest to get what he can now. I also think he feels this system suits him very well. The question marks will be down the line and rest of the team….who/what takes priority from there. JPP?…Suh?…Nassib?….RT?….RB?….Secondary? To think Licht can fill even one hole through the draft is grossly optimistic. Is the line the same if you let Suh go but keep JPP and Nassib? Do we finally cough up money for a legit player in the secondary? It will be interesting.

  4. James Walker Says:

    Pay them all!

  5. George Rauh Says:

I rather do the other way around. Tagging Jameis will cost 28 million tagging Shag will only cost 16 million

  6. chris L Says:

jameis better not play hardball with his contract. a couple year deal for him and franchise tag shaq but hopefully jameis understands that we need money to build this team around him for us to compete. especially after this franchise stood by him after the uber incident whatever happened there. i just hope he is reasonable because we need to be smart with our money moving forward

  7. reply Says:

    PAY THE MAN ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Pay them under the table…..works quite well for many……

  9. Buczilla Says:

    No-brainer, pay this dude!

  10. JimmyJack Says:

Big off-season for our GM but the decisions look easy. Just keep all our own guys. Simple. We can win with group. Plus I like these guys.

Brate and Perriman might be CAP casualtys. Hopefully we don’t gotta choose between Suh or Nassib. I’ll take Suh if we gotta. Tough call though. Also JPP is our top priority on defense. Thankfully we can keep both he and Barrett no problem so no difficult choice there.

  11. Pewter power Says:

Jason licht is the luckiest man in the building and despite it all he still has to draft trenches on both sides and so weird we probably have to draft another receiver but definitely a running back.

This is mike Greenberg territory get it done make jason licht look better than he’s been. If the team regresses next year it will be because of bad offseason personnel decisions

  12. Buc believer Says:

The Glazers should sign both Jameis and Shaq no matter WHAT!!! Doesn’t matter if they need to steal from Peter to pay Paul just like they did when they bought Man U. They stole Buc money to by the soccer club.

  13. TexBuc Says:

Give Shaq and Jameis 4yr contracts with half guaranteed so we could cut after 2 years if it does not work out.

  14. JimbobBucsFan Says:

    I’m with you, James Walker.

    Pay them all!

Bring back every free agent possible. Bring in a few new free agents and pay your draft picks all!.

Good luck with all your negotiations Mr. Licht!

    In BA I Trust!

  15. gotbbucs Says:

I’m sure they already have the parameters in place for his deal, and it will be announced as soon as he takes Sapp’s record.

  16. pryda...sec 147 Says:

Pay the man he earned it.

  17. BUC CHEEKS Says:

Rounders John Malkovich – PAY HIM HIS MUHHHHNEY

  18. Brandon Says:

I think a multi year deal that averages $16 mil per season for a guy with one year of production might be able to get done.

Jimmy Jack obviously doesn’t know what he’s talking about. We’ll have nearly $100 mil in cap space. Why would Brate be a cap casualty or even more importantly, why would Perriman, who isn’t even under contract be a cap casualty? Pay attention, please. Dude doesn’t even have a contract. This has been stated numerous times. And Nassib will be cheaper than Suh, and he’s five or six years younger. I hope we have enough cap room to buy you a clue.

  19. adam from ny Says:

they will franchise him because he will only get cheaper next year…or slightly cheaper…

the 9 sacks thru 4 weeks threw his stats right out of proportion for the whole season…

right now he should have around 10, maybe 11 sacks…

so they will franchise and deal next year when he has a dozen sacks on the year…

    only logical…

also i have the same hoodie shaq is sporting in the pic above…so he aight by me!

  20. adam from ny Says:

also if the bucs draft a dt early this year, suh will not be retained…

i hope they keep him tho…

he has had a “quiet big year”, if that makes any sense…

he and jpp bring stability to the entire group…

reality is the group has matured one more year, so most likely out of jpp and suh, we will only see one coming back…

    oh well…

joe, let licht know we want both beasts back…

  21. adam from ny Says:

    also…

if they (meaning the staff) feels that vita is about ready to break out and become more of a vocal beast and leader, that is all the reason to let kong suh go…

it’s like kong suh is secretly training kong vea…

    it’s like: “just watch kidd…and learn”…

it’s like suh is the sensi, and vea is the karate kidd 🙂

  22. adam from ny Says:

it’ll be a shame to lose players off the d- line because they let no one, and i mean no one gain yards on the ground…it’s a pleasure to watch them bottle dudes up…

these backs are lucky the league rules have softened…

otherwise our guys would be slamming these backs to the ground and busting ribs…

  23. Bucs Guy Says:

I like Suh, but his stats continue to go down and he’s not worth the money. There’s probably three 1st rd DTs. The Bucs should target one of them.

RT and RB in the 2nd. How can you get both? Trade OJ Howard for a 2nd and 4th. Then maybe package a 3rd and a 4th rd pick to get back into the bottom of the 2nd for another high quality pick (S, OL or TE).

  24. Licht Headed Says:

Consider Suh gone. Franchise Shaq. Winston holds all the cards in negotiations so we will see how generous he is. Some of you schmucks kill me with your lowball takes on Jaboo.

  25. Eric Says:

Nah, we need to build an offense around Andy Dalton.

  26. Hodad Says:

I think it comes down to JPP, or Nassib. One is older, doesn’t show up unless he has to, skips OTA’s, and does dumb things to himself, the other is younger, a team captain, has more upside, and show’s up all off season. Winner Nassib.

  27. cmurda Says:

Shaqmaster ain’t going nowhere. If a tag is to be used or needed to be used, it would be on Shaq, not Winston. That’s a no-brainer. Somehwere in the neighborhood of 16 mill for Shaq’s tag and somewhere in the neighborhood of 27 mill for Winston’s tag. I think the Bucs can get a 2,3 or 4 year deal with Winston done for around what the tag would be anyway. Let’s be honest. The biggest Winston haters have been silent for about 3 weeks now while JW keeps giving fans and ownership no choice but to bring him back. You know, the passing yards leader and all that. The hope is that Shaq and JW get signed. We can save the franchise tag for Roberto Aguayo.

  28. Licht Headed Says:

Haha…Winston not signing for 2-3 years. Dream on.
