Not Sweating Over Fourth-Round Pick

November 10th, 2019

Still here.

For all but the last game in Seattle, veteran receiver Breshad Perriman played like he couldn’t make an XFL roster.

Yet the Bucs time and time again, game after game, forced the ball to him for no good reason, and with virtually no results. And when he did catch a ball — which was enough to halt play and recognize the effort — he couldn’t get his feet inbounds.

Joe advocated cutting Perriman for the simple reason he was awful and like a child with a rattle, if you take it away from the baby, out of sight, out of mind. Joe thought getting rid of Perriman would be the only way to stop Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich from throwing to him so much.

However, Perriman woke up last Sunday in Seattle (four catches for 42 yards and a touchdown). Finally!

But many Bucs fans beat the drum to get rid of Perriman because the Bucs would have possibly (keyword there) been in line to get a very late fourth-round draft pick. But to be eligible for that, Perriman had to be released by yesterday afternoon’s deadline tied to compensatory draft picks.

The Bucs kept him.

Joe isn’t worked up over possibly losing that draft pick. In the post-Chucky era, only two players the Bucs drafted in the fourth-round were any good and neither lasted long with the team.

Here is a list of Bucs’ fourth-round draft picks since Chucky was jettisoned:

Sackless (with the Bucs) Kyle Moore, mattress-in-the-front yard Mike Williams, fan favorite Luke Stocker, kneeling Akeem Spence, Will Gholston, injury-prone Kwon Alexander, Ryan Smith, Jordan Whitehead, Anthony Nelson.

Williams — until he went mental after signing his second contract and tried to become a rap star — and Alexander were the only two players drafted in the fourth round Joe would call “good.”

Jordan Whitehead is an OK-to-good safety on one of the NFL’s worst secondaries. Gholston is a decent lineman against the run but rarely can rush the passer. Stocker was a decent blocker.

Aside from Alexander and Williams, are any of those players listed enough to work up a sweat over?

So the chances are slim the Bucs would draft a guy in the fourth round who would contribute long-term.

Should the Bucs have gotten rid of Perriman? Depends. Which Perriman are we talking about? The slug who played most of this season or the guy who stepped up last week?

Just let him run straight down the field
    Every play

    Breshad,
    Go
    Deep!

  2. Defense Rules Says:

I like you Joe advocated getting rid of Perriman. Still do. Biggest waste of $4 mil I can imagine. He was 3-for-16 for 16 yds prior to Seattle. So instead of benching him or cutting him, our illustrious OC doubles up & we target him 8 more times. He rewards us by catching 4-of-8 targets for 42 yds, bringing his total on the season to 7-for-24 for 58 yds and 1 TD. One very lucky TD that represents 18 of his 58 TOTAL yards. Breshad’s now UP to 29% catch percentage .. in ONE HALf of a season.

And just think, that auspicious production ONLY cost us $4 mil. Bobo the Clown had similar numbers and was shown the door. Beam-Me-Up Scotty has even worse numbers (23%) and should be shown the door. And Was-That-To-Me? Perriman should join them both. Please Byron, use your TEs and Justin Watson more for heaven’s sake. Scour other teams’ practice squads for talent. Just do SOMETHING Jason … for a change.

That list of fourth rounders looks a lot better than the list of second round picks

  4. TDTB Says:

    Sabby Chris nailed it.

  5. Pugs&Bucs Says:

The Bucs traded UP for stocker and Dominik gave him a second contract.

  6. Aaron Says:

The right move was to cut him for that possible pick. Would rather give some of our younger guys looks anyway..plus we could have moved Godwin out wide and played OJ Howard in the slot from time to time.

Personally I call this another GM mistake.

Go Bucs – weather is going to be awesome for the game today.

Will we get Good Jameis or Bad Jameis

  7. BUC CHEEKS Says:

With the gloves these guys use, it’s a JOKE these guys don’t catch every single thing that touches their hands!!! Damn things are like fly paper! Let’s go!!! Show up or GTFO!!!

  8. tmaxcon Says:

Come on joe TBBF is convicted the only way to build a winner is with COMP picks

You could do the same analysis for 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks bucs have only had 1 or 2 players from each round workout over 42 years…. last first round pick who earned his money was sapp before that selmon…. it’s hard pressed to find 2nd and 3rd rounders who have worked out…. not many great draft classes when you’re proud owners of the worst winning percentage in sports and only one great season

But comp picks…. it doesn’t get any better than a comp pick

Bucs writing the manual on how to be the worst sports franchise.

  10. Wesley Says:

Gholston was a good 4th round pick.

  11. Sport Says:

Joe, I think I know why you normally only say “post Chucky”, because he won a super bowl and had a winning record? Understood. However his drafting was dog poop. He and Bruce Allen are egotistical maniacs. They sucked af drafting too.

The core of that defense was in place, we added a few solid free agents and got us the glory. Thx.

But the draft capital to get Gruden and Keyshawn devastated the future of the franchise. We sold our soul. It paid off, but don’t give ego Gruden a pass on his drafting ability. He Hated Rookies!!!

    In BA I Trust!

I don’t know (SMH). Breshad “roadside inflatable tube man” Perriman is runs horrific routes and can not catch. If it’s Licht or BA or BL or all of them, they’re dumb as hell. Instead we’ll play Perriman and Miller because they have speed, and not let the guy with good speed, could have great hands, and our best ST player sit. I was a protector of Jason Licht before, but I’m done with it. I beg of you Baby B!tch Glazers, sale and hopefully we can get a new owner and GM that can make the dark clouds clear over Ray Jay.

I don’t want an extra 4th round pick as long as Meathead is picking it!!

Lol, you can try to pretend Mike Williams and Kwon Alexander were never good, but only a fool would believe you.
