No More Road Warriors

November 9th, 2019

League plans to act.

It seems the NFL wasn’t just blowing smoke when a suit said this past spring he felt sorry for the Bucs on national radio.

Even the league felt guilt about the Bucs playing on the road, across the country and even across the pond, for a month and a half.

Per Bucco Bruce Arians, it seems the NFL has vowed to the Bucs that it will never put them through a road schedule like the Bucs (and the Raiders) had to endure. The Bucs, tomorrow, will play their first home game since choking against the Giants on Sept. 23, some 49 days away from the Den of Depression.

“Yeah, I think they’ll make a rule about it – that was what I was told,” Arians said. It is unclear who told Arians this.

Shortly after the 2019 schedule was released, Mike North, the league’s director of broadcasting (no, not that Mike North), did a spot on “Late Hits” with friend of Joe host Alex Marvez and Gil Brandt, heard on SiriusXM NFL Radio. There, North said the Bucs got jammed by the schedule.

“If we had a do-over, if we had a re-do, I would love to take another shot at that Tampa Bay schedule,” North said at the time. “They volunteered, really, to go to London this year. They are on the road the first couple of weeks before they go to London. And it just happens to fall in that they got a couple of road trips after [the bye].

“You know, that is six consecutive weeks without a home game at their stadium and I’m not sure that’s really fair to their fans. I am hopeful that we didn’t do something to the Buccaneers that they feel like we did something unfair. I know we are not supposed to root for anybody but I am kind of rooting for the Buccaneers throughout October.”

The “volunteered” part is actually a bit misleading. Whenever a team hosts the Super Bowl, it is required to play a home game on international soil during the season prior. The Bucs host the Super Bowl in February 2021, roughly 14 months from now.

If North meant “volunteered” as in the Bucs offered to host the Super Bowl, then yes, the Bucs volunteered.

Joe is unclear on whether the NFL promised the Bucs they would never get put in a situation like that again or if Arians was told by the NFL they will put a new scheduling rule in beginning next season.

Maybe the Raiders (5-4) survived their road trip from hell because they just have better players.

The Bucs, in only 8 games have had 18 turnovers.
    Their record is 2 – 6.
The Raiders in 9 games have had only 8 turnovers.
    Their record is 5 – 4.

The Raiders are ranked 26th defensively in points allowed.
Their only losses are to the Chiefs, Packers, Texans, (all division leaders), and the Vikings.
They simply do not beat themselves by turning the ball over.

Yes and the Bucs are 31st defensively in points allowed, you don’t think in close games those additional points matters? Dude you are dense. If the Bucs had their defense we might be 6-2 that’s how much worse our defense is. We average scoring 5 more points weekly than the Raiders and we average allowing 5 more points weekly than they do. Thats a 10 point spread difference that might make a little difference ya think.

Bucs got screwed with this first half schedule, in more ways than one. Yes playing so many games on the road is unfair, but look beyond that at the teams they’ve played. How many have a losing record? The Giants and now the Titans. BOTH teams that we. SHOULD have beaten, but alas it wasn’t to be.

Now look at the Raiders. Yes they’re 5-4, but they’ve played a MUCH easier schedule. They’ve beaten only ONE team with a winning record and lost to FOUR teams with winning records. Bucs on the other hand have beaten TWO teams with winning records but lost To FOUR teams with winning records.

Grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence.

Do you think we give up +5 more points on average more than the Raiders because of turnovers? I do. Short fields, and 3 pick sixes this year don’t help our cause.

Defenses do better when they can not be backed up against a wall. I can think of a few times this year where the D buckled down after a turnover.

It’s a team game and our secondary blows hard, but to dismiss turnovers or vehemently defending them is L-A-M-E.

I look forward to commenting on the game thread with you tomorrow. Jameis played the best game I’ve seen from him in a while. He looks outstanding, other than the deflection Perriman TD- but I’ll take my bc it worked.

While I criticize our QB he played awesome last week. I hope he does it again.

  7. ModHairKen Says:

The schedule did not produce a 2-6 record. Jameis, Hargreaves, and their co-horts did. The question now is what will the next games produce?

Will the rookie and 2nd year DBs begin to feel more comfortable? Lynch and Barber were dog crap their first two years.

If the Bucs finish 8-8, does Jameis come back? Does Shaq? Suh? JPP? Nassib? Does Licht?

Play the season out. Let’s see what happens.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Ndog… Play fair. Bucs defense has allowed 252 puts thru 8 games of which Jameis and the offense are directly responsible for 23 puts (3 Pick 6 and a safety). Plus they’ve been directly responsible for another bundle of puts because of short field turnovers where our defense at best was going to give up a FG at least. But we won’t count those. Just tag our defense with 229 puts allowed. Still sucks IMO but with a rookie Secondary shouldn’t be unexpected.

Compared to Oakland’s defense (240 puts allowed in 9 games) we’re just about equal. BOTH bad at this point, BUT … Ours WILL do better this second half, IF they can get and stay healthy. And IF our offense kicks into gear and stops turning the ball over, this team can probably break even on the season. We’ll see.

  9. tickrdr Says:

    @NDOG:

    I’m so confused.
The 5 points weekly we allow more than the Raiders?
Are you referring to the TWO “pick 6’s” vs. the Niners?
Or are you referring to the Titans drives starting at the TAM 6 and 10 yard lines?
Or maybe, it’s Winston’s 6 turnovers in London.
But, but, but, he is playing OUTSTANDING!
Even his coaches in the Giants game, after he threw that WTF interception, went completely TURTLE by calling 7 straight rushing playsbecause they didn’t trust him.
Even last week, when he supposedly went “toe to toe” with Russell Wilson, one of his 2 TD passes was thrown into triple coverage, and should have been intercepted, but miraculously went to Perriman instead.

What made this particularly egregious to me was it’s the Bucs!

The league had to know that the Bucs would be toast by the time this was finished and therefore kill attendance for the Bucs.

I surely do not feel sorry for the Glazers but season tickets holders truly got hosed. It’s a Buc’s life!

So here’s a thought. We had to go to London for the SB. Let’s get the best revenge possible and host OURSELVES for that SB!

  11. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    @SteveK,

Have you actually watched the Bucs play? You are blaming JW for the play of the secondary? That is some serious JW hate you have going on Bro. The Bucs secondary would come in second behind a mild breeze in offering resistance to an NFL offense. Danny Dime and Tannehill looked like Tom Brady vs the Bucs secondary. Goff threw for something like 900 yards against us.

You have a legit complaint about JW’s TOs, they are bad. But until JW is taking over for VHIII, JW is not the cause of our problem there.

Oakland has probably played weaker opponents this season I’ll grant you that but they completely gutted the roster there in two years, hit on practically every draft pick this year, have a offensive rookie of the year candidate in Josh Jacobs, Richie Incognito that is playing better than almost any offensive lineman in football, GM that apparently knows a thing or two about football, and way more draft capital next year for Mayock to play with because of the Khalil Mack trade.

If you think the grass isn’t greener there I’m not sure you ‘ve been paying attention.

Who ever said he does no wrong? It’s just beyond ridiculous to blame the QB of a top 5 offense in the NFL when our defense is one of the two worst in the league. Yeah TOs blah blah, watch the frickin games and please somebody anybody state that this defense is anything other than HORRIBLE. What short field did they get against the Giants none and allowed 32 to a first time starting QB at home, what short field did they get against the Saints none and they allowed 31, remember that 99 yard drive they gave up vs the Panthers? Yeah you want to harp on TOs how about our defense every once a frikin decade stop somebody on their side of the field to give us good field position? You guys are so full of crap it’s not even funny.

  16. ChipBuc Says:

Duthsty Rhothdes the opposite could also be said about all the Winston haters. So just because one side is in Winstons corner, and the other side isn’t, doesn’t make either side right. This is just a case of we agree to disagree.

Ndog, nobody here is praising our “outstanding” defense. But, your slavish gushing about the virtues of Famous Jameis totally erodes any respect for your posts on Buc matters. Have you noted the responses to your (usually) drivel.
The Bucs suck in many areas, including QB.

    get a clue man….lol..

no defense can did themselves out of a hole the QB puts them in consistently….

we could have BB as HC with the 02 BUCS defense and we’d still be 2-6 because JW consistently turns the ball over…..

the BUCS teams in the late 90’s had historically great defense BUT dilfer would always put them in a hole they couldnt come back from….

yeah dilfer won a SB with another great defense but he had to do very very little…..the ravens showed how much he had to do with the SB win and showed their confidence in him by NOT resigning him….lol….dilfer is the only QB in NFL history to be released or not resigned after winning the SB…..lol….

and after that he was a career back up…..lol….

JW is a career back up once he leaves tampa….

    JW IS A BUST!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  22. Allbuccedup Says:

The whole team sucks, owners suck, GM sucks, and most of all the bs head coach sucks.

  23. Fire Goodell Says:

No way the NFL would schedule the Patriots to play five straight games away from Foxborough and give up a home game to play in London. They would redo it.

  24. BigHog Says:

I’m slavishly gushing over FAMOUS…..what I know is that he doesn’t lose games on his own ….it’s a team sport, this team needs to get better in all areas!!! GO BUCS GO FAMOUS GO DEFENCE!!

  25. Ndog Says:

No gushing just FACTS which you guys never have any response to.

  26. unbelievable Says:

ChipBuc nailed it – way too much hyperbole on both sides.

It’s not 100% Jameis’ fault, nor is it 0% his fault.

The offense, defense, and special teams have ALL contributed to our 6 losses.

I’ve never understood why people are so desperate to look and sound so completely uninformed and irrational on the internet.

  27. Howard Cosell Says:

Maybe the Raiders (5-4) survived their road trip from hell because they just have Coach Gruden.

    ^Fixed it

    I will always idolize Chucky:
    1.) For the SB
2.) For how he handled working for glasers.

His stock was at an all time low, I think, after g’s fired him for no good reason (Fans are stupid…if g’s did it to appease fans it shows a huge problem)….so he takes the MNF job, owns it, and raises his stock through the roof….THEN, he uses the g’s (grovelling for him to return) to get partial ownership of a better run team with better players.

    Game, set, match –> Gruden

  28. Slugglife Says:

It’s purely as issue of FSU homerism. That’s all this is. Or maybe it’s racial. We can make it racial, can’t we?

I mean, nobody here wanted Fitz benched after the 4 interception game right? Certainly not any of you FSU JW homers. Am I right?

Blind allegiance to sub par football players is not a winning formula. We all know if JW looked like the people you idiots call racists, you’d be clamoring for a different QB. JW is a failed experiment. But don’t worry guys, we can give FSU’s Blackman a shot next, if that’s what you really need.

  30. Mad Mark Says:

Who cares anymore, really! More home games in future don’t change a bunch of losers into a winning team that fans will want to buy tickets to Ray Jay The “Den of Depression” (except for visiting team). Not until (or if) they ever have a winning season it won’t help any. Perhaps if they move to London since they play “home games” over there so often. Just look at their record it speaks for itself, bad draft picks, coaching, management and ownership.

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Howard

Are you aware that after that single Super Bowl year Chucky was a losing coach. 6 games under .500?

He had clearly lost the team by his final year. They no longer trusted him because they thought he talked out of both sides of his mouth.

  32. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Wouldn’t it be funny if adversity really does build character? Wouldn’t it be neat if the Bucs were to turn around their losing habits in the second half this year?

Wouldn’t it i be something if winning carried over into next year, management really plugged all of the holes during the off season and the team made it to the playoffs in 2020? What if the Buccaneers played well for several more years thereafter and made it back to the big dance once more?

A fan can dream can’t he?

Reality is still one game at a time for now!

  35. Howard Cosell Says:

    @stpetebucsfan

Are you aware that for those 5 seasons Gruden was working for the glaser kids? It’s a mathematical fact that absolutely NO ONE can succeed under that ownership group. Yet Gruden maintained a record better than any off the following Buc HC’s with the exception of Raheem’s 1st year, where he still had most of Gruden’s team in tact.
Watch the Raiders closely this year and be very sad your team is glaser owned
