“The Kind Of Quarterback Arians Would Never Accept Or Groom”

November 9th, 2019

Hard words

Great 90-second clip below from one of Joe’s favorite sports radio listens in the land, Dan Bickley, a columnist and host in Arizona, where he’s been for about 20 years after a long career in Chicago.

Bickley notes that his listeners and readers were polled and the majority said they would not trade Bruce Arians for current Cardinals rookie head coach Kliff Kingsbury, even if they could turn back time.

Also, Bickley explains that Arians got success out of his quarterbacks but he got them beat up, and that Arians would never welcome a quarterback talent like Cards starter Kyler Murray on his team.

Interesting stuff, and no, Bickley is not an Arians hater.

Winston is and average QB. period!! He isn’t that accurate with his passes and he fumbles too much and throws too many pics. He may get a big pay day from the Bucs but the Bucs would be better off getting another average, cheaper QB and take the money they save and build around another QB. The Bucs only super bowl win was with an average QB who had a talented team around him, especially on defense. After 5 years in the NFL, Winston is what he is. One good game, one horrible game. time to move on!!!

  2. WorstFans Says:

Surprised Winston hater’s on every god forsaken article. We seriously have much bigger problems than the QB. Let’s hope our first round pick is OL or DL. Hope for a win so you losing culture ppl can bitch about us losing a top 5 pick lol.

  3. teacherman777 Says:

John Lynch could have been our GM.

    Let that sink in.

  4. Kobe Faker Says:

“Grandpa Smurf is getting dumber and more senile

Giving bulletin board material for the Cards

Telling Arizona ownership and Kingsberry they dont know what they are doing and Murray isn’t a franchise QB…lol! Who has more wins?

Bruce Almighty knows everything and he will won’t stop telling you

    Kobe Faker has stated repeatedly

The reason BA returned to Coaching was solely so he can hear himself talk

    Arizona wins 32-24

*The Buc Realist (Tampa bay’s black cat)

Streaks naked in the 4th quarter and gropes Bruce Arians”

  5. Defense Rules Says:

Bickley makes a good point about the type of QB that BA looks for, and THAT should cause all of us concern IMO. I’m starting to think that Jameis is simply the product of what he’s been asked to do … live or die by the long ball. Dirk Koetter promoted that & now so does Bruce Arians.

We’ve surrounded Jameis since Day One with WRs & TEs who are very tall & very good at playing the deep game. We even went out & bought some speed to stretch the field for them. Racked up LOTS of yards using that concept … and LOTS of losses. Not really that the idea of focusing your offense on a deep game is bad. It’s just that management & coaches seemed to have overlooked 3 essential ingredients:

1 – An OLine that can consistently protect the QB while the deep routes develop.
2 – An adequate running game to keep the defense honest & eat up the clock.
    3 – A QB who’s accurate deep.

Our OLine is average at best & has given up a bunch of sacks & QB pressures. Our running game is meh & is still too predictable for my tastes. And Jameis can throw the ball deep, but not with a great deal of ‘touch’. His 59% completion percentage is very low, and as much as anything that’s because of what he’s being asked to do, but it’d be aa LOT WORSE if he wasn’t throwing to Mike Evans & Chris Godwin, two of the best WRs in the NFL. And BOTH of them GRRREAT at either catching the deep ball OR keeping defenders from catching it.

This offensive strategy doesn’t just get QBs hit a bunch. Without a strong OLine, an adequate running game & a reasonably accurate QB it INVITES TURNOVERS. Looking at BA’s past teams, as those 3 things improved, so did his results. When they start to falter (as in 2016 & 2017 in Arizona?), his results were nothing more than average. Break-even seasons.

Oh & kinda forgot to mention that it takes a strong defense to bail his offenses out when their turnovers were too high. 2013 – 31 giveaways (defense got 30 takeaways) … giveaways decreased in 2014 (to 17), then rose again in 2015 (to 24) and again in 2016 (to 28) then decreased a little in 2017 (to 25). His won-loss record in Arizona mirrors that AND the takeaways by the Cards’ defense (to compensate?). His best year, 2015 (they went 13-3), Cards #2 offense gave the ball away 24 times, BUT their #7 defense took it away 33 times, a differential of Plus 9. Works for me.

  6. 2020 What is the bucs future plan? Says:

Glazers…. wake the f*ck up!!! Your need to rebuild for 2020…. clean house from top to bottom …. fire the GM 66% LOSING REORD under his tenure….. even forest GUMP could figure that one out

  7. Conte Piscatelli Says:

The issue with Winston is that he isn’t worth big quarterback money. Yes he can play some, but he is much more of a 10-20 rated guy than a top 5 and if the bucs sink big money in his contact it will only make our call situation hurt more and keep this team from bringing in,or resigning talent at other positions. I don’t blame Winston for this, I blame the league and their need to have the next quarterback contract be the biggest in the league.

  8. Colonel_mp Says:

Bucco Bruce does prefer a big quarterback that can take some licks. Winston, Palmer, Luck, Manning and Big Ben. No smaller guys that have great feet.

  9. Rayjay1122 Says:

WorstFans. Yup, it’s the fans fault that the team sucks. What a clown you are but hey, worst fans for the worst team

  10. Allbuccedup Says:

Worst fan for the worse team you have to have money to rebuild your team. If you give Winston 27-30 mil a year your not going to have it. You sign your pro bowl QB to a long term deal and watch this team sink into the bottom of Tampa Bay.

  11. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Well then the game has passed BA by…

  12. Pewter power Says:

Classic deflecting rayjay or it’s a comprehension problem. Done get the invoking the losing streak on every coach that can’t have a winning season or dominate from day one. Dont get dumb fans behind mad about the record when you never thought the team have enough talent to win anyway

I guess people apparently miss the blowouts we suffered over the years because they don’t realize that hasn’t happened. Prefer close losses to Dirk and lovie never being in the games

  13. Allbuccedup Says:

Losses are losses whether they are 1 pt or 30 pts. Another 5-11 season here we come. GO YUCS.

  14. I Bleed Pewter Says:

he’s accurate just a little over 50% of the time …not good

  15. Jim Says:

    Defense said it well enuf,..again.

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

First off….we are NOT bad fans!!! We have a bad team with a horrid record for a significant period of time. The fact that we are even still around makes us GREAT FANS IMHO.

    @Larry

Way to start this thread off! I agree completely but I’m not talking about my agreement but the measured manner that you posted about JW. Too many times I read JW is headed to the HOF or JW couldn’t even play for the Noles again. Extreme takes are rarely accurate. Thanks for thinking and posting a reasonable take whether folks agree or not.

Regardless of how it turns out with JW I do not want to get back into the MAJOR crapshoot of wasting a top five draft pick on another QB. We can find better alternatives.

We need to find out where JW ends up after this season. We need to find out where ROJO ends up after the season.

If we get a top five pick I would do a Bobby Beathard and trade down. Think how many picks a top five can bring…or even perhaps a player and picks.

I want to join those clamoring for building the trenches. I know it’s heresy but I’m not ready to chuck out entire DB corps. Obviously VHG is gone or comes back at half his salary…not likely.

Multiple picks could help us really load up in the trenches with at least two OL and two DL in the first three rounds.

I’m tired of rolling die on a top pick at QB. Either JW works out or I favor ditching that entire concept.

  17. Alanbucsfan Says:

Arians coached the Cardinals to only their 2nd Championship game since 1948.
Until Kingsbury accomplishes playoffs, please hold off on the agenda comparison.

  18. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    @DR: “…A QB who’s accurate deep…”

What am I missing here DR? ME is leading the friggin league in deep balls and you think our QB sucks at being “accurate deep”? I see JW throw a lot of back shoulders to ME, but I have never seen ME have to do a major re-route to catch a deep pass.

For someone who usually provides research and stats to make his point, the position that JW can’t throw an “accurate deep” pass is very off IMO. But, as DB would say, wtfdik…

  19. Bosch Says:

Teacherman, that sinks in hard. Is the Bucs weakest link QB? DB? No, the debate is between ownership an GM.

Seeing Lynch’s success with the 49ers is the silver lining of this season. I hope they go all the way!

  20. gotbbucs Says:

If Arians and Licht stay then so will Winston. They are all married to each other.
Ownership won’t allow Licht and Arians to start over with another QB. They failed at developing the #1 overall pick, it would be a hard sell to this fan base to allow them to start over with a true rebuild.
The fact that they weren’t sellers at the trade deadline says it all. Licht has this team right up against the salary cap, there’s no way he can admit to the guys writing the checks that they cant win with what they have on the field.

Expect next year to be another reset year, only this time the QB will either be on a $27 million franchise tag or a two or three year bridge contract, and because of this they’ll have to sign a bunch of vet’s to one year contracts.

Lichts career is tied in a double knot to Winston. The only way Winston isn’t the QB of this team is if Licht and Arians are fired, and firing Arians and paying out his contract also means firing the largest coaching staff in the NFL and buying out all of their contracts too.

The sooner everyone comes to this realization, the sooner everyone can begin coping with it. I have some issues with the opinions of the writers of this website as pertaining to this team, but at least its therapeutic to be able to air things out in the comments. So for that I’m thankful. We are beaten and battered, but for some ridiculous reason we are all still here.

  21. #1 BUCFAN Says:

Better times ahead. Ticket sales way down. Attendance way down. Tickets now starting at $35.00, 1980s price, the Bucs will be 4 Sale when season is over or before.

  22. Buccfan37 Says:

Live long enough and the Bucs just might contend with a winner. Chances go up the younger you are.

  23. 813bucboi Says:

    JW is a bust!!!!

stats can be earned in garbage time and we all know JW is the king of that….

folks talk about JW being top this in TDs and top that in yards but fail to realize he’s at the top when it comes to turnovers….

our defense wouldnt be half as bad if JW didnt consistently give the opposing team the ball…which leaves our defense having to defend a short field IF they havent scored on a pick6…..

    JW IS A BUST!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  24. I’m a Tandyman used to be Bucs Fan Says:

Jason Lycht/John Lynch!! That’s like Pop Warner and NFL!! Lycht is horrible in his draft choices, proven fact!! Can’t believe we could have had Lynch whom is a Buccaneer ICon and we are stuck with Forrest!! Buccaneers Fans deserve better man!! Tear that Boat down and rebuild it Glazers!!! Enough is enough!!!

  25. July Joe Says:

Jameis Winston is on pace to finish the season 2nd in passing yards, 3rd in passing TDs and leading the Bucs to have the 4th most points scored … all while just 25 years old.

HE WILL GET $$$ PAID $$$$ either in Tampa or elsewhere!!!!!!!!!

  26. crazyBucs_CL Says:

    @July Joe
“HE WILL GET $$$ PAID $$$$ either in Tampa or elsewhere!!!!!!!!!”

Please ELSEWHERE…. $$$ AND success, nothing personal against him, for you FSU fans… but he should go and bring here an average QB with cool head and leadership. I know is a long shot for us to hope for, since his presence here is connected to JL (which got a contract extension) and BA (which is in first year).
But lets hope owners come to better senses, and see what the rest of us, and most of NFL specialists see on JW.

    BA = LovieS 2.0

  27. FanO’Bucs Says:

How many qb’s did Denver draft to find their guy? Did they succeed?
    How about Cleveland? Chicago?

    Guys throwing for 140 yards…

Bucs fans have lost perspective on how hard it is to replace a qb.

Me, I’d rather reign in a very talented player than try to encourage them to be more bold.

    GO BUCS!

  28. Belligerentbuc Says:

How about Dalton or Rivers or Manning?

Would we do better with any of this three vs Jameis Or try a rookie in place?

    What’s your poison Bucs fan?

  29. Allbuccedup Says:

The Glazers will probably rationalize after talking to BA his bs will convince them this is a transition year and they will be playoff bound in 2020. Then BA and JL will draft 3 dbs 1 punter 2 safeties and a partridge in a pear tree. And the team will still suck with or without Winston. I can’t believe somewhere in Lichts or Arians contract it doesn’t specify some clause for a minimum amount of wins. If it doesn’t the Glazers have been had.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

Belligerentbuc…fix the secondary…. then worry about the QB!

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

Here’s a problem as I see it….we’re all being guilty of premature decisions.

The season is only half over. We’re not even sure where we’ll need to select to fix positions. The young DB’s might be decent by the end of the year and ready to go next year.

JW might develop enough consistency to be worth another contract. That changes EVERYTHING from a salary cap perspective.

  32. Jean Lafitte Says:

    July Joe is Big Hog

  33. ElBajito43 Says:

Yes you are right @WorstFans. What a stupid name…….

I am hoping for another Bucs loss with 6 ATM withdrawals by the AZ Cards ♦️ defense.

    Yaaaaay!!!!! Wooooohooooo!!!!!

NFL DRAFT 2020 HERE WE COME!!!!!!!

Wooh Whoop Whooop (fist pumping) each Winnie -Pooh INT!!!

    Fire 🔥 Licht

  34. DalvinCookRules Says:

The Bucs are 2-6 but I am 6-2 in picking Bucs games so far.

Bucs will get win #3 against Arizona, and Winston will show Murray what an overall #1 pick is supposed to look like (at least for this game anyway)

  35. Reach87 Says:

You can never be a good fan if you root for your team to lose. Never. Ever. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been buying a ticket. Basic fact…quibble like you always do, but that’s not being a fan. Go Bucs!

  36. Old Time Buc Says:

I agree with StPete in it is way to early to be judging the BIGGEST PROBLEMS the Bucs have (albeit there are many). Qb? Db? OL? Wr? Rb? You have to see if there is improvement anywhere first. With so many needs you start with the trenches first!

  37. Old Time Buc Says:

I know some are going to roast me over the WR part but we only have 2 proven players ther and a bunch of wannabes after that!
