Bucs Near Modern NFL Record, Have Something In Common With Super Bowl Teams

November 4th, 2019

This stat tells quite a story.

The 15-1 Green Bay Packers of 2011, the Falcons’ Super Bowl team from three years ago and the dominant Panthers Super Bowl club of the 2015 season all have something in common with the current Buccaneers.

Those clubs led the NFL in passing attempts against them.

For good teams, that’s a clear sign their opponents are often playing catch-up, forced to throw because they’re trailing in the second half.

For a bad team like the Bucs, the whopping 40.8 attempts per game against them this season let’s you know just how brutal their secondary is. Offensive coordinators know the way to beat Tampa Bay is to throw, throw, throw and throw. And that won’t change this season.

Back in 2007, the Vikings had the No. 1-ranked run defense in the NFL, and teams threw an average of 40.4 times a game against them. That led the league. Minnesota started 8-6 with two games remaining against the Redskins and Broncos. They lost those final games because they were carved up by quarterback Todd Collins (no, that’s not a typo) and then Jay Cutler the following week.

Chip Kelly’s Eagles finished 10-6 in 2013, and that team holds the modern-day record for most passing attempts against a defense in the regular season, an average of 41.9 per game. Part of that can be attributed to the Eagles’ hurry-up offense, which resulted in more total plays in games. Another aspect was those Eagles racking up a load of points and teams trailing against them.

Joe is confident this year’s Bucs defense will get to 42 passing attempts per game and surpass those Eagles.

This century, the Bucs once led the NFL with the most passing attempts against them in a season. That was back in 2000.

And, well, if you were a Bucs fan back then, you know that didn’t pan out well for opposing offenses. The Tampa Bay defense finished with 25 interceptions, 55 sacks and allowed just 15 touchdowns through the air.

facepalm……..blame the secondary. yeah they suck……..sucking oxygen because they’re on the field too damn long!!!

If BA had their back like JW’s I think they’d play a bit better…and stop moving guys around. They started the 1st 2 games looking like a brand new, and well coached, unit.

what has changed. we all know. ….turnovers, then blame the secondary and move guys around.

OK……I’m convinced our pass defense is horrendous……I don’t know how many more articles are needed to convince us…..but, write all you like.

We need to address the elephants in the room…..Jason Licht & Jameis Winston…

I suspect both are here to stay…..win or lose….probably lose.

If we are losing bc of the secondary, we should definitely blame the qb

joe the narrative is different this year. in most games last year we would go down big and then play catchup and lose. this year we go up big and then squander the lead. same result.

when you are a offensive coordinator facing that high school bucs secondary it has to be overwhelming you have so many failures to target…. vh3bust and pals are embarrassing…

Get someone in here that can evaluate defensive backs. Licht and the entire scouting delartment need be let go yesterday. Why is Licht allowed to make mistake after mistake and still be employed by the Bucs? He’s drafted and signed some good players, but his f up’s far outweigh his hits.

The one thing that fans had to look forward to this time of the year was the draft. Now Licht and his ineptitude have robbed us if that as well. So frustrating. Lol, just fire this dude and let’s start ANOTHER rebuild Glazers.

I wonder what the TOP stat is Joe? That would have a direct correlation….

  9. Bucamania Says:

With that many attempts you’d think they’d get an INT once in awhile.

Offense puts up 34 points, but some of these nitwits think it’s THEIR fault that the defense was gassed?

Hmmm, maybe don’t give up 40 and let the opponents march down the field drive after drive and you wouldn’t be so tired….
