Bombs Away

November 6th, 2019

Needs to start.

If statistical data from the previous six games is any indication, Arizona rookie quarterback Kyler Murray is going to launch the football early and often Sunday when the Cardinals come to town.

Why is that? Well, the Bucs, you may have heard, have a secondary so gross it would make Kathy Griffith wince.

The Bucs secondary is so bad, someone or some people need to be locked up for racketeering. And NFL teams know this and are taking advantage like a drunk sailor on shore leave with a wad of cash in a South Pacific cathouse.

So this pattern will just continue until the Bucs fix the secondary. And Joe hates to break it to some, but this secondary isn’t getting fixed until March at the earliest.

Look, there is no way Vernon Hargreaves will be back next year. Well, there shouldn’t be. People howl that America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, might get $20+ million next year. Well, Hargreaves is the worst corner on the worst secondary in the NFL. Paying him $9 million (which he is owed if the Bucs keep him) would be irresponsible.

The Bucs should bench Hargreaves and throw Jamel Dean in the pool. Let’s see if he can tread water.

If Dean can’t, then you know for sure Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht needs to go shopping for a corner.

And please, no more drafting anyone in the secondary. Way too much draft capital has been burned on defensive backs with very little to show for it. Time to buy a broken-in corner.

strongly disagree. the secondary were on there men for the most part beaten by an actual NFL caliber QB with accuracy and touch.

I see at least 2 picks coming from the secondary…and the usual 3 turnovers by JW, the last of which will be the game loser.

  2. Bucsfanman Says:

Get the kid in there and stop blitzing so darn much. Get these guys some help.

  3. tmaxcon Says:

our secondary can not cover nor are they in good physical condition… sounds like another long day…. jameis’s fault of course. good thing for low standard bucfan they are ready with excuses

  4. DBS Says:

Sorry Joe. The acting GM/HC will probably not want any vets. Maybe even let a few of these rookies go and draft more. But at least we can be sure he won’t say it is Totally Fixed!

  5. Greg Says:

Definitely need a battle tested corner as well as a battle tested safety. Someone to lead the young rookies on the field. Those can be addressed in free agency and save our draft picks for new tackles and pass rushers

  6. Lamarcus Says:

Vh3 is the weakest link in the entire NFL. .
How do u demote yourself and your still terrible?

Vh3 and the ones banking on him needs to go. Go to the Jets or something else.

  7. Lamarcus Says:

And agree. Let Bunting and Dean take their lumps. It can’t get any worse

  8. DB55 Says:

No no no there isn’t a problem with the secondary it’s just the quarterback who is not a real franchise QBs which is fitting imo bc you know this isn’t a real franchise but wtfdik

I’m sure those numbers aren’t factual just opinion based.

  9. pick6 Says:

the worst thing for the bucs would be VH3 plays and gets yet another season-ending injury. depending on severity the bucs could be stuck paying $9m for a garbage CB. I wouldn’t be averse to seeing him take a seat…there are plenty of DBs who can trail the WR by 5+ yards on every route the same way he does

  10. The Graham Tram Says:

Looked like Vernon was full-time nickle. Is the argument SMB should move back to nickle if Carlton comes back? If SMB has looked better outside, then I’d keep him there and rotate Dean in.

  11. JimmyJack Says:

40 passes per game……..That actually sounds like a good thing on the surface. Make em throw that much and you should be getting some picks, batted balls, sacks and lots of game changing plays. And that just ain’t happening.

Gotta point a big fat finger at Hargreaves here. He was supposed to be some big ball Hawking guy coming out of college. I was willing to give him this year to proove some worth since he was stuck in Mike Smith’s back peddle 40 yard defense. Well the results are in and Vernon is just a bad player.

We keep making these teams throw throw throw………yeah well that only works if you make them pay. Looked like that’s exactly what we were going to do during preseason. What the heck happened? Need better players all’s I can say.

  12. LordCornelius Says:

SMB looked decent. VHIII in nickle was still exposed a bit.

Dean basically single handidly gave up most all the big plays and TDs. Then again dude has barely played any snaps.

I’d have rather gone with Ryan Smith vs Seattle last week. Not sure where the coaches see him at but he was our best corner from last year over Calrton Davis

  13. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

Vh3 needs to be put back in the middle n let dean stay out there the seasons lost but they can go through the growing pains n maybe just maybe dean will come out as a good cb. Honestly put all the dang rookies out there so we know what we got come end of the season

  14. RustyRhinos Says:

Who is at fault when our Defense gets a stop and causes a punt, to were we get the ball and quickly go three and out. Or worse we have a turnover, or a miss snap, or a bad play design. Who is at fault when this happens? The Defense has done its job. Forced a punt. Great, same as a turnover. What happens to the “accountability” when the Offense can’t score, can’t get a first down, can’t hit the open receiver. Can’t score, can’t gain enough yards to allow our Gay “weapon” to split the uprights. Who is responsible? The Defense? Special teams? The Offense? Who is it?

  15. Patrickbucs Says:

Yeah Winston isn’t the problem at all, 4 to’s a game opportunity to the opposition. It’s everyone else’s fault for those. Other then the d-line were not very good at any position group period. It’s everyones fault starting at the very top to the young corners were trotting out.

ESPN Stats & Information charters have credited defenders with dropping another six interceptions, most in the NFL, and Winston has fumbled a total of nine times. So in reality, Winston has given opponents 31 legitimate opportunities to create a turnover. They have just taken him up on it a little more than half the time.

  16. Kobe Faker Says:

“Jimmy Dean has the worst coverage skill Ive ever seen

    no quick twitch recovery

    tightest hips ive seen ever

he was practicing 2 months of straight 40 yard sprints before the combine

Gump doest care about football skills

JL and BA twins are in love of Deans and Perrimans 40 time and everyone can suk a egg

Kobe Faker has as much right to be on a NFL football field as Jimmy Dean does”

    The Kobe Faker

  17. JimmyJack Says:

Rusty…….That’s too many questions. Its far more easier to live off emotions and feast off of which problem is most recent in your memory.

The flavor of this week is secondary. In London is was turnovers. If both them fail how bout we dig into playcalling.

Try not to complicate matters. It’s so much easier that their be just a single problem and a simple fix. I sleep much better at night assured we are a CB away from greatness.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Are they having to teach Ryan Smith how to be a corner again?…..Why was he not in the game instead of Dean…..that question hasn’t really been answered.
At this point, I’m all for giving our younger players more snaps…..that doesn’t mean I believe in tanking at all….I believe that we must know what we have going forward.
And how is Carlton Davis’ injury?

  19. Pewter power Says:

If they were smart they would play all the young guys. This became the worst pass defense in the nfl with VH3 and Davis starting.

  20. Kobe Faker Says:

“This is why nothing will ever change till Gump is sent packing out of town

This is why bad drafting puts you years backward and the harm/damage it truly does

Not only was the secondary busts taking place of Oline players in need,

YOU HAVE TO PLAY THEM FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS SO THE GM WONT LOOK BAD”

    The Kobe Faker

  21. 813bucboi Says:

CD gives up 2 TDs and 2 PIs last week…

    JD gives up 3TDs…

but folks want to cut VHG….lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  22. BAforPresident Says:

I’m am very hesitant to embrace relying on free agency, but we have maxed out the number of corners we can take in the first three rounds without a stud to show for it.

In the last four drafts, we have taken 5 cornerbacks in the first three rounds
    1 first rounder
    3 second rounders
    1 third rounder

To use up another pick in the first three rounds… maybe it wasn’t meant to be.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

@Kobe … “Kobe Faker has as much right to be on a NFL football field as Jimmy Dean does.” And yet, Jamel Dean had 4 Passes Defensed Sunday & 5 tackles Sunday, and you had … oh ya, NONE in your armchair Kobe. But one thing is certain, BOTH of you have never started an NFL game before so I guess that makes you even. Oh wait, no it doesn’t. Dean had THREE defensive snaps before the Seattle game. An obvious advantage for him. My bad.

  24. Desanova Says:

Maybe Davis and Bunting should start on the outside. At the least, we know teams prefer to throw at Dean than Bunting. I don’t completely buy into the narrative that our secondary players are terrible. We are asking them to play 1-1 and not getting a quick pass rush. Most any CB would break against that. The call is getting predictable. How about trying to play some cover? Also why was VH3 allowed to self-select himself into nickle? Isn’t that a coach’s call and wasn’t he more needed on the outside, especially when Davis went down?

  25. VA Tom Says:

Only took him 6 seasons to find a kicker. Secondary should be fixed in NO time!

  26. Ryan Hayes Says:

Bucs 2ndary will be fine SMB C Davis an Dean are a good Top 3 an Ryan Smith should be brought back as well he is a decent CB that is good being your 4th or 5th I think MJ need work in Outside not Slot Bucs will find there Slot Corner next year this was never a 1 year fix Bucs had no cap space an they will get it all fixed in offseason

  27. Clw JB Says:

The secondary is a complete joke, just like the ridiculous blitz packages Bowles continues to regurgitate

That double A gap blitz – please retire that immediately or at least let the LB’s get a running start – watching them get stood up at the line while any QB in the league eats us alive get old…

Also, how many games are we going to watch the shallow cross kill us 10-15 times? This was the 4th or 5th time this year- GET IT FIXED!

You would think Lockett was ME13 the way we just let him run free all day, ever heard of bracketing coverage?

  28. Anonymous Says:

    what happened to vh3?

did he get so smoked out he can no longer ball at all…

it’s like the dude was vaped to death

  29. Kobe Faker Says:

    “The funny thing is

the coaches see Lockett run the shallow cross 10x as he gets instantly wide open by 10 yards but

Leftfoot runs that jumbo wr screen in a I4 traffic jab to Godwin

we have no short passing scheme and design

every completion is downfield to tight windows and JW3 has only 2 downs to move the chains because every 1st down is wasted by a run up the gut

but Lefty doesnt think defensive coords are on to him”

    Kobe Faker

  30. teacherman777 Says:

    @joe

Have you guys realized that we started Jamal Dean instead of Sean Bunting??

Our bottom of the 3rd round CB started over our top of the 2nd round CB.

Sean Bunting didnt get the start! Jamal Dean did!

What does that say about Lichts pick?

MJ Stewart over Carlton Davis all over again!!

  31. Capt. Tim Says:

    The problem isn’t the players.
Carlton and Jameel will be good players.
The problem is, that the entire secondary are Rookies and 1st year players
    Thats insane.
You have to have veteran leadership in the secondary, who can help get the rookies in the right place, and tell them how to defend all the Different WRs.
Hargreaves will never be that guy. He still has no idea what hes doing.
Justin Evans could have helped. He was a big loss- just for his experience alone.

Intelligent teams slowly bring rookie DBs along, gradually letting them learn from the Vets.
The great Ronde Barber said, on numerous occasions, that it took him 2 1/2 years, before he knew what he was doing. Ronde has not said that. He has said it took him until his third season to reach peak form, which for him is a very high bar.–Joe
Our secondary doesnt have any decent Vets in the secondary. Its all rookies and 1st year guys.
That the team let our secondary get that bad- is nothing but horrible team management. Inexcusable.

The only thing the Bucs can do, is hire another secondary coach. A guy who was playing a year or two ago. That knows how to defense all the WRs our Baby secondary will face. A guy who has recently played the game.
Our Cb from last year ,who retired- would be perfect.
This would only help a small amount, but these kids need all the help they can get.
There are some young DBs on the team, that could grow into good Players.
But right now, all we are doing, is destroying their confidence- and letting them habitually use bad technique.

If Bruce Arians really thought the secondary was “fixed”, with a secondary filled with babies- then he isnt a good coach.
    Meybe hes gone senile

  32. Allbuccedup Says:

Do not draft on more defensive backs sign one of the four top free agent available in 2020. Then a second tier db at a lower price or an older veteran. Do not pay VH3 9 mil next year he may not be the worse db but his value is only about 2 mil not 9.
