Why Andrew Adams?

October 14th, 2019

Todd Bowles and Jason Licht

Starting at safety for the Bucs yesterday was Andrew Adams.

The veteran was on the roster last year and had four interceptions in part-time duty that included four starts. Todd Bowles, Bruce Arians and Jason Licht evaluated Adams and apparently thought he was not their kind of guy.

The Lions signed Adams in free agency and the Bucs thought M.J. Stewart could play safety, then Tampa Bay drafted Mike Edwards, the rookie out of Kentucky in Round 3. They also signed Darian Stewart, the former Broncos Pro Bowler off the street in mid-August, as Justin Evans remained injured.

Detroit cut Adams at the end of August, and about 10 days of unemployment later he was  back in a Buccaneers uniform — and starting in a crucial game yesterday.

He wasn’t very good.

Joe does not know if Edwards was benched for disciplinary reasons. But that would be surprising. Still, Joe has to wonder. Edwards was a personal favorite of Bowles in the draft. Insiders like Rondé Barber have made that clear publicly.

If Adams is the guy going forward in a poor secondary, then Joe has to consider that a Bowles/Arians/Licht screwup at safety. Hopefully, Adams getting the start yesterday represented a team searching for answers with a guy who had a great week of practice, and not something more.

We should have hired Gruden back in 2018. Who is getting the last laugh now? At least Licht would be gone had we done that and we could have Incognito and a slew of draft picks.

  2. zzbuc Says:

Not sure about Arians and Bowles….But I am pretty sure Licht screwes everything he touches……

  3. Troy Says:

The longer we wait to see that this train wreck needs to be blown up and rebuild, the longer the fans will suffer. Licht doesn’t know what he’s doing. How many times do you give people the chance to fail?

  4. 813bucboi Says:

no pressure or pass rush exposes everyone….lol….

    i say, play ryan griffin….

all the other backup QBs are playing well…..

JW is not the long term answer…..he aint even this years answer…..

JW is a complete bust as a #1 overall pick….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  5. ElioT Says:

Licht will get this secondary fixed, he just needs a few more drafts.

    These things take time.

…ah, I’m just kidding, Licht is horrible and must have pictures of the Glazier boys or something.

Again, this dude actually makes Dominick look like a true Rockstar GM.

  6. Dread Says:

Edwards got injured during practice in London. That’s it. Non-story.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

I was also wondering what happened to Mike Edwards. I’m really starting to wonder what’s going on in terms of personnel management (starting to look more and more like BA & his staff are playing mind games with some of these youngsters).

In yesterday’s game, there were 66 defensive snaps total. For our CBs … Davis had 63, VHIII 58, SMB 35, Dean 2, MJ Stewart 1, Ryan Smith 0. For our Safeties … Adams had 65, Whitehead 61, D Stewart 5. Edwards didn’t even show up in any stats, so he may have been inactive. If I remember correctly, he’d had an earlier injury (hammy or whatever), so maybe that acted up. He played 94% of the defensive snaps in the Saints game with 5 solo tackles & 100% of the snaps in the Rams game with another 5 solo tackles, as well as 97% in the Giants game, 92% in the first Panthers game, but he only got 4 defensive snaps in the 49ers game (I think he was hurt prior to that but not 100% certain). He’s been playing fairly well IMO … for a rookie.

  8. 813bucboi Says:

    i can see it now….lol…

    licht trades:

    suh- chiefs
    VHG-chargers
    mike evans-patriots
    winston-dolphins
    LVD-colts

then spends all the draft capital on DB’s, WRs and a kicker….lol…
then turns around and signs a bunch of UDFA’s for the trenches…..lol…

we’ll have a secondary full of 1st and second round picks with DE’s that are UDFA’s and folks will complain about the secondary and say they’re all bust…..lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  9. LongSeason Says:

If this continues by the time the Bucs get back from the road fans need to be outside One Buc Place protesting calling for Licht to be fired. We need a petition to hand him, the Glazers or both. This protest should carry into the games with everyone holding signs FIRE THEM CANNONS at Jason Licht. Or maybe, Light at fire under this team, fire Licht.

  10. adam from ny Says:

    why isnt’ darian stewart playing?

  11. Bucsalltheway Says:

Edward’s had a hamstring injury…and hes worth shelving until healthy the guy is everywhere on defense when he plays..

  12. Locked In Says:

Injured or not, Edwards’ play was not good against the Saints.

  13. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Cardinals team arians left was a dumpster fire; bucs are just not good at all

  14. NPRSageBoy Says:

For the record, the secondary isn’t fixed, unless you mean neutered.

  15. D-Rome Says:

First it was Lovie that pulled the strings on Jason Licht. Then we blamed Dirk Koetter and Mike Smith for all the mistakes Jason Licht made. Now people are suggesting that it’s really Bruce Arians and Todd Bowles that did all the drafting in 2019.

At what point are the Joes and some fans going to realize the common denominator of this reign of terror is Jason Licht?

  16. Get a clue Says:

Could of kept McDougald but Licht keeps trying to reinvent the wheel failing miserably

  17. unbelievable Says:

    More stellar talent evaluation!

Lol 813 still sucking on vh3s jockstrap.

  22. Bucsfanman Says:

LUV- Why did DJ get released in the 1st place? And, is he an upgrade?
Sure, maybe due to injuries but overall?
A blade of grass has a better chance of covering WRs than some of our starting DBs (ahem, VHIII!). Get someone competent, key word “competent”, in there ASAP.

Much respect my man… but you know damn well that this season was lost before it started. you have to try to be this bad year in and year out….

rolling with this oline and secondary going to the season is incompetence bordering on criminal fraud.

  24. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Bucsfanman

Whatz good bredren? Hope all is well.

For some odd reason quite a few veterans don’t want to play for Joseph (same in Denver). So I won’t hold that against him. But we need a solid vet back there right now; to help rally the troops.

  25. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    I gotta say something though.

This off-season I really thought there would be no way in hell – they would give Licht full reigns of the organization (again).

That’s why was pushing for us to sign former Texans Executive Vice President of Football Operations Rich Smith. But unfortunately with passing off wife he stepped away from football for awhile.

You were right they should’ve just fired him.

  26. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    “T”

I know things are grim my brotha.
I just want us show some backbone for once and go all in.
At least make a damn attempt to do better.

  27. Nick2 Says:

When I saw him although I remember his good play last year I thought “who is Adams???” I mean where was Darian Stewart? I thought he played decently in his time and he did come from the Broncos who have a decent defense. What in the h*** is going on with this secondary??? Oh and Jason Licht? Your days are numbered sir. Too many wasted secondary draft picks for a secondary that is abysmal to say the least. Todd Bowles probably tossed and turned all night long.

  28. LongSeason Says:

NPRSageBoy Yes, our defense is fixed as in neutered. They will not be allowed to reproduce any offspring.

  29. 813bucboi Says:

    unbelievable still riding JWs dyck…..

must blame others because he’s a nole homer….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  30. Bucsfanman Says:

    LUV- You da man!
Yea, way too much youth and perhaps having a vet helps smooth things out a bit.
This time leading up to the trade deadline will be telling.
