Former Bucs DB Ricky Reynolds talks technique

Joe respects dudes who played in the NFL. They’ve been there and done that. So there’s credibility when former players speak.

Yesterday on “Tailgate Sunday,” seen Sunday mornings on WTVT-TV Channel 13 hosted by Scott Smith (JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman also appears as a panelist weekly), former Bucs defensive back Ricky Reynolds discussed the trainwreck that is the current Bucs secondary, the worst in the NFL giving up over 300 yards of passing per week.

Reynolds, hardly a critic who tends to lean more in favor of players, had a couple of things to say about the defensive backs that concerned Joe.

“I’m noticing a lot of bad technique out there,” Reynolds said. He specifically cited Vernon Hargreaves playing with bad technique. “Guys out there are turning their hips too early. They are out of position. Instead of being on top of the receiver they are underneath the receiver.

“They are putting themselves in the hole in bad spots to make plays.”

To this Ira quipped, “Can we get Coach Reynolds in the building?”

This is just not a good look. If a former NFL player can see this, then why cannot coaches? And if coaches are aware, why does it continue?

And what the hell is going on with Sean Murphy-Bunting and Jamel Dean? Are the Bucs trying to tell us that these two rookies corners are so behind the eight-ball that not even Hargreaves, who is playing godawful football, is at risk of being replaced or benched? Why cannot these rookies get on the field?

One reason former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter is gone is Bucs management implied that coaching (not talent) was the problem last two years. So now that the pass defense is even worse, who gets hung out to dry? The players? Koetter and Company are long gone.

Can we at least see them geez can’t be any worse the Hargreaves

  2. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

    “But but but but but

We have a great run defense

    Lol

Run defense AND run offense stat is the most worthless meaningless stat in all sports

It’s a passing league, running is meaningless

The run is to only setup and compliment the passing game

This is the new NFL normal”

  3. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Koetter’s doing a great job with Falcons…..right…

Secondary needs to get more physical- wonder if soft coverage was due to backup safety? Still, no excuse, needs improvement and soon.

And , by the way, all those points being scored- could that be coaching? Now if only someone in his 5th year could learn how to take care of football… wishful thinking.

Ricky in his black high tops…was controversial with the NFL…

  5. RustyRhinos Says:

Wish we had #29 out there again for a few games. Reynolds, and Abraham, Barber, too would be a nice change. Thanks Joe always nice to read about players from our past still interested and concerned with their former team.

  6. Jean Lafitte Says:

I just think they are young and fear of being penalized if they even touch a receiver. These pansy @ss PI rules is ruining the game.

  7. Bobby M. Says:

When do we pound the table for Bowles to be fired?….Since we know it cant possibly the idiot drafting the garbage on the field.

  8. Pelbuc61 Says:

So the largest coaching staff in the NFL has no adequate coaching for the DBs. It’s just another example of the con job Licht and BA pulled on the owners and fans kind of like BA handing the play calling over to Leftwich after he was hired. This franchise is a pathetic target for fraudsters.

  9. Joe Says:

When do we pound the table for Bowles to be fired?

It’s hard to do that since the same coach is responsible for one of the better run defenses the Bucs have had since Sapp and Brooks were playing.

  10. NOLES Says:

You have to try hard to miss on that many picks… it seams that Licth is always trying to draft a surprise player no one else wants in Rd 2 ie… MJ Stewart, SMB & Carlton Davis. He could have drafted them later…. We have passed on several quality O Lineman for these busts at CB… I can’t take another draft by this GM…

  11. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

“Matt Ryan is done with Klueless Koetter

Getting sacked 5x in 3 quarters , cant throw but ints and looking miserable he faked a ankle injury

Matt has had enough of Klueless, He has his wife Kathy Bates with a sledge hammer to fix his ankles”

  12. Buczilla Says:

Ricky Reynolds in his prime would go a long way towards helping out our defense. Like you said Joe the coaches need to let the damn rookies play. If they are worse than Hargreaves then so much the better for our draft position and they get some experience. I know I say this practically every day but Licht has got to go. I can’t even look forward to the draft anymore knowing that dude is making our picks. If Arians doesn’t like it then he can get the hell out too.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Oh that’s precious Joe … “I’m noticing a lot of bad technique out there,” Reynolds said. He specifically cited Vernon Hargreaves playing with bad technique.”

Wow, newsflash. Vernon using bad technique. Whodathunkit?

  14. 813bucboi Says:

secondary wont get better until we get more pressure on the QB….outside of shaq pressure is few and far in between….JPP will certainly help…..

    GO BUCS!!!!

  15. TOM Says:

I read the same crap every day. Nothing is ever going to change until the inept, clueless Glazer’s sell the team to owners that know something about how a team should be run. Starting over and cleaning house beginning with worthless Licht & a HC that really sold the fans a bill of goods. Otherwise its going to be groundhog day till then.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Oh ya Joe, it’s the coaching for sure. Let’s fire TB just like we did Leslie Frazier so he can move on to run the #3 defense in the NFL.  THAT’S the ticket.

Todd Bowles surely has the youngest, least-experienced Secondary in the NFL … by far. And when your MOST experienced CB is named Vernon Hargreaves you don’t brag much.

It’s NOT the coaching. I don’t care how good your DLine & LBs are; manning your Secondary with all rookies & 2nd-year players is a prescription for DISASTER. These guys need EXPERIENCE in games to mature. Davis, Dean, SMB, Whitehead & Edwards all have talent; they lack EXPERIENCE. They also lack LEADERSHIP on the field; something a veteran CB & Safety could’ve provided. But we don’t have that … thank you again Jason. Our only recourse NOW is to get these guys the experience that they need … in games. And oh ya, take our lumps. Double thank you Jason.

  17. diggler Says:

Funny story about corners getting behind, sooooooo back in the day when the bucs practiced at UT, you could chill right next to the team and coaches. I remember hearing Wayne Fontes telling the QB at the time to watch out for Reynolds cause he likes to look beat then hell turn on the jets and pick you. There’s technique then there’s savvy AND speed. Mayhew had it all!

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Wow Joe, TWO awaiting moderation. I’m moving up. Or maybe that’s down. Hmmm.

  19. BucEmUp Says:

What the hell is going on with these owners? I think coaches are not held accountable and just kick back for a 2 to 3 year vacation.Only common denominator are the Glaziers

  20. GhostofSchiano Says:

Other NFL coaching jobs have some perks.

Tampa though – No state income tax, minutes from the beach, plenty of Glazer loot and VIP seating at Mons Venus.

Are you an NFL coach or a former one? Come to Tampa, we put the fans “ire” in Retirement. Enjoy great weather and loads of Glazer loot, but remember the GM never gets the boot.

  21. tmaxcon Says:

The glazers must be pissed falcons are camping in Buccaneers Cove the nfc south basement without permission…. glazers have no intention of fielding a winner anyone who believes any different is taking ignorance to a new level of laughable… the small market irrelevant franchise will never compete…. accept it and embrace the jerry Springer entertainment aspect of franchise its the only entertainment guranteed from this ownership

  22. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

The bucs run defense is good but it is nothing to hang your hat on especially in a league that is more 7 on 7 these days and the bucs have a worst pass defense than mike smith…so obviously OCs are gearing up to throw the ball….wonder if the bucs will be tennessee ready

  23. tmaxcon Says:

    GhostofSchiano

You left out some key bullet points

    No accountability
    No pressure to win
No expectations outside of basement titles
    Small fanbase
Small market medis hacks with zero credibility so easy press conferences

  24. Mister Negative Nancy Says:

I’m less and less convinced that coaching is important in the NFL… at the end it seems almost always to be about player talent.

The idiot sons will always continue to be the #1 problem with this team, but Licht is a close #2.

  25. Ben real Says:

So joe tell me why you don’t respect Ian beckles when he talks jameis and when he dissed your boy McCoy? Lol hypocrite

  26. tmaxcon Says:

    Mister Negative Nancy

Dont leave out the bumbling fool sister its not just the brothers who are incompetent and clueless

  27. Lamarcus Says:

Vh3 is garbage. He just not a NFL player. Maybe he can go to Redskins and make a play like Spence did. Just get him off out team

  28. Rayjay1122 Says:

Bucs just suck. When I was a young teen, I defended them and always had hope week in and week out, season after season. Being 45 now, I guess my years are becoming more precious because I have much less of them and my patience has been sucked out by the perennial losers.

I don’t know how the hell this team manages to suck every year. I mean really, it confounds me that they can’t even accidentally do good. Bad talent evaluation, drafting and coaching year after bloody year!

I can’t control the Bucs. I have no say in their decisions. I just observe and shake my head. Sometimes their circus of clowns even make me laugh.

As soon as we are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, which won’t be long, I will pull for the Saints the rest of the season. I can’t bring myself to hate the Bucs but they definitely took away my passion as a fan.

  29. BUC CHEEKS Says:

We don’t have a shut down corner or anything near one! Shutting down one side of the field, forcing play to the other side! It’s an effing free for all out there! GET US A PROBOWL Corner!!! STAT!!!

^^^There’s no such thing is a shut down corner anymore. After the rule changes as Sapp puts it, there’s a freeway down the middle of the field now.

  31. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs have a stuck in lumpy gravy pass D.

  32. spicoli Says:

Can we start talking about who we are going to draft next year? Too soon?

  33. TampaTown Says:

I was watching this yesterday morning and I said the same thing. WTF there’s 100 coaches on this staff and NO ONE recognizes bad technique. I do blame Todd Bowles. Nice we have good run defense but it means nothing if we cannot stop the pass.

  34. Delawest Says:

Boy I wish I had a recording of me on Sundays
telling my wife “ there not fundamentally sound.

    1. They peak in man coverage.
    2. In off coverage line up 1/2 yard inside the receiver.
    3. In press coverage use a inch back technique.
    4. Like Mr. Reynolds said “they need drive too the up field shoulder.
    5. Off coverage quit getting your cushion ate up turn a run with your
receivers @a 1yd or 2 and drive up field shoulder.

  35. stpetebucsfan Says:

I’m not a football expert…just a fan…and as a Buc’s fan it could be said I guess that I’m not a smart fan…or at minimum not smart enough to pick a winning team.

But watching VHG this season does not lead me to blame coaches and technique. That could be “part” of the problem but the reality is that VHG is totally overmatched on the outside physically. He’s not strong enough, nor fast enough to play in the NFL on the outside. NO coach…NO technique is going to change that.

I take no joy in posting that but it is what it is…VHG is simply overmatched in this league.

  36. BUC CHEEKS Says:

    @Diggler

Give me ANYTHING other than these guys… I hear what you’re saying and what’s been said but DAMN!!! Can we get someone who can do their job! This is trash! Jalen Doesn’t even know his playbook yet and he still held Julio to only 69 yards and three catches! This is what I’m talking about, and one of those catches was a full layout five!

  37. BUC CHEEKS Says:

So much for the greatest coaching staff in history.

Although, coaches need something to work with
