The Morning After

October 28th, 2019

There is so much to work with after the Tennessee Ready Loss II. Joe almost doesn’t know where to begin. But grab your coffee and let’s roll.

Peyton Barber and First Downs

Joe tossed and turned last night with visions of Peyton Barber running on first down. Every first down. Always up the middle.

Well, the game wasn’t quite that bad. But with your season on the line and the Bucs needing to pick up a first down on fourth-and-one from the Tennessee-32, it blows Joe’s mind what happened.

The Bucs, Bucco Bruce Arians said after the game, had a run-pass option. If the Titans defense showed one thing, call the pass; if they showed another, call the run play. This was all brainstormed during the two-minute warning.

And what was the run play the Bucs dreamed up? Barber up the middle! You just cannot make this stuff up.

(What Arians did not say is if America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, audibled into the correct play.)

You spend an entire two-minute warning timeout and this is the best run you could come up with? With your season on the line? My God, what is going on here? How about a pitch to Ronald Jones who at least has some speed?

Joe is not impressed with Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich at all. And yesterday’s game sealed it for Joe. If it isn’t the same run plays over and over and over again, it’s forcing balls to Scotty Miller and relying on that XFL wannabe Breshad Perriman.

(To Perriman’s credit, he had as many tackles as Devin White in the first half, which was also a tackle for a loss. Too bad he tackled his own teammate.)

Joe is starting to understand why Josh Rosen had a raw deal in Arizona. Head coaching job? Leftwich has a lot of growing to do as an offensive coordinator if he wants to be a head coach, whether it be in the NFL or a Power-5 conference team in college.

In fact, Joe wouldn’t be surprised if Team Glazer is trying to coax Arians into taking over the offense. There were reports before the season Team Glazer was a bit skittish in thinking they were paying for Arians but getting a lesser offensive coordinator instead.

Seems those fears were well-founded from what Joe has seen through seven games.

Barber’s Gerbil Wheel

If you think you are in Groundhog Day watching Barber run up the middle every first down, well, it’s not quite that bad but it is bad. The worst thing a team can be on offense is predictable and when Barber is in the game, he’s very predictable.

Yesterday, Barber ran the ball 10 times. Of those 10 runs, seven came on first down. Here is the breakdown per the NFL’s official Gamebook.

First down: up the middle
First down: left guard
First down: right guard
Second down: up the middle
Third down: up the middle
First down: left tackle
First down: right tackle
First down: right tackle
First down: up the middle
Fourth down: up the middle

So if Barber is in the game, and it is first down, if you are a bookie you’d lose your shirt if you walked through a Hooters full of Bucs fans because they would all bet on the Bucs calling Barber up the middle on first down.

What in the world is this fascination with running Barber up the middle on first downs? The best run Joe remembers Barber having this year was a 16-yard touchdown up the gut (naturally!) at Carolina in Week 2.

Now if Joe can see this from the press box and if Bucs fans can see this after three or four beers at their favorite watering holes, then why cannot guys at One Buc Palace making six- and seven-figures a year see this?

Bet Team Glazer can see this.

More Crazy Playcalls

Want to know why Mike Evans was so steamed after the game? Yeah, the Bucs lost, sure, but there is more.

Mike Evans is one of the best receivers in the game, no? And he single-handedly took over that game yesterday in the second quarter. He brought the Bucs back to life.

So take a wild guess how many targets Evans had in the critical fourth quarter.

Per the NFL’s official Gamebook, that would be a big fat zero.

Jameis did target a guy who should not be on the roster much less on the field, this running back I-Dare-You-To-Play-Me, and there were four targets to Perriman, who couldn’t catch a cold and who should be cut this morning for such a terrible game.

What is wrong with this picture? Two guys who should be trying out for the XFL Vipers were targeted a total of five times in the critical fourth quarter but the best wide receiver the franchise has ever had? Zero.

No wonder Evans was peeved. Fans should be outraged!

And you wonder why Joe is not impressed with Leftwich?

Lid About To Blow?

Joe has no idea what happens next but that locker room sure smells like a bomb is about to blow up. Guys are downright fed up with their teammates making the same mistakes over and over and over. Bucco Bruce looked like he wanted to punch someone yesterday and shat all over the wide receivers and defensive backs.

Lavonte David apparently tore into his teammates in the locker room immediately after the game. You could hear Jason Pierre-Paul in the background of Joe’s interview with David saying [unknown player(s)] were “… talking about f@cking white girls and sh!t and we just lost the f@cking game.”

Joe just wonders who is going to get thrown under the bus first or how many dudes start freelancing (such as the guys with one-year contracts) so they can put out tape for their next contracts and new teams next spring?

What Next?

The simple answer to this is Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht should start cleaning house. Every guy under a one-year contract should be traded for draft picks. The only two guys not under rookie contracts who should be untouchable are Evans and David.

Arians threw cold water on this concept yesterday in his postgame remarks when he angrily said the following when asked if the team is now a seller at Tuesday’s trade deadline.

“(Sigh) I don’t play for next year,” Arians began. “Are you guaranteed for next year? I’m not. Do you play for next year? I’m going to try to win every damn game we play. So I don’t give a s(p)it about next year.

“I want to beat Seattle.”

Now the thing is, what does Team Glazer want? It is irresponsible to think this team can make a playoff run, unless, to paraphrase original Bucs coach John McKay, there are “three or four plane crashes and we’re in the playoffs.”

The smart, rational, responsible thing to do is to clean out the locker room and get draft picks. The powers that be should know who to keep and who to unload by now. You either play for the playoffs or you play for the draft.

While Arians’ view is understandable, it’s very short-sighted and could cost the Bucs in the near future.

Does Team Glazer then issue an edict to Arians? And if so, would Arians just bolt out the door? This whole thing, between the locker room about to boil over, Arians’ view of what should happen the rest of the season and Team Glazer’s potential long-term view for the franchise could make for a very, very messy next two months in Bucs Land.

At least this should provide new and fresh drama than the usual constant bickering over Jameis.

Jameis turns it over 4 times and plays bad at the start and disappears at the end but plays great in between. BA waste a time out on a stupid challenge and looks lost with clock management. The D plays good but gives up a killer long drive. The season is over before we get to November…. Its like the movie groundhogs day!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    Keystone Bucs.

No improvement as the season goes on.

    No hope for fans.

It’s always as bad as it seems.

  3. mike Says:

Its all about 2020 at this point! Have to listen to offers for Brate, JPP and Shaq. Have to let Rojo get 20 carries to see what you have and you have to cut Perriman! Also, let Griffen play a full game in December to see if hes worth a roster spot.

  4. Pete Mitchell Says:

Imagine being one of the ten dudes on offense not named Jameis Winston.

Imagine listening to some old washed up dude talk about accountability Monday through Saturday.

Then imagine watching Jameis throw multiple balls to the wrong team and having to listen to the same old washed up dude tell the whole world about how it’s not Jameis’ fault.

    Accountability?!?!

Give us a break. The GM has a 28-59 record and just signed an extension. There is no accountability.

This sh!t is old and weak, just like our new head coach.

  5. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

How is that not racist? Awful character on this team. It’s getting to the point where I hope they lose.

  6. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

    Leftwich is outwitting himself

  7. Bruce Blahak Says:

Leftwich coaching Leftwich clone has FAILED! They both need to sit down. It’s Griffin time! This sh*t show, WinSTUNNED, better be done here. Trade before tomorrow preferred!!!!

  8. Bruce Blahak Says:

…and, yes, for the first time ever I want my team to lose…SAD!!! Until WinSTUNNED is no longer part of this team, nothing positive will come out of this team….

  9. tmaxcon Says:

This season was over before it started. Licht rolling with that offensive line sealed jameis fate and teams fate before the season started. Throw in the fact the secondary is high school at best and the first round savior is a bust… so what did you expect to happen??? I have been telling you low standard delusional optimists for months to prepare for the nut punches….

I warned all you mentally weak delusional optimists to stock up on cups the nutpunches would be coming but oh now you fools bought into the BS again…. lol

Maybe they will do better in London in a few years but right now they are garbage franchise ran by apathetic scum owners with no desire to field a respectable product

  10. Upthecreekwithoutapaddle Says:

Someone please check and see if that’s Leeman bennet hiding under a Bruce arians mask. What a dumpster fire!
If Jason Licht retains his job after the last three seasons ,please sign me up to work for the team.
Talk about non performance. This is the worst I’ve seen !

  11. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

And I want JPP to call out who that was making those racist statements. Don’t cover for him!!

  12. Sharthappens Says:

It’s not rocket science Joe. The coaching staff does not think the 33rd ranked QB should throw the ball.

  14. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

The Glazers do not have a long term plan. Is that not patently obvious by now? They have no clue what they are doing. Clean house? So the GM responsible for drafting and signing all of these bad players is supposed to get rid of those same players? That move would be tantamount to an admission of guilt, if not his own ineptitude. Not gonna happen.

Neither the Glazers nor Licht have a “plan”, and they certainly do not have a governing philosophy like the Lightning and Rays. There is a brutal incompetence permeating this franchise and it starts with ownership.

And, talking about screwing white girls minutes after a loss? If the Glazers had even the slightest clue they’d find out who the offenders were and cut those players themselves. It’s your company morons, take charge or hire someone who will, or better yet, sell the damn team. Maybe Vinik or Stu is looking for another investment.

  15. 813bucboi Says:

Unfortunately BA might be losing the team by continuing to stick with JW…

players on both sides are frustrated…..you can see it on the faces of Mike Evans, Dotson and for the first time I saw Chris Godwin having some poor body language….

Defense is getting frustrated because they’re always put in a hole early in the game….and BA blames them not the 5th year QB that’s putting them in the hole….

    GO BUCS

  16. Sharthappens Says:

@pete: one more thing…JW can’t even spell accountability

  17. tmaxcon Says:

Small market irrelevant franchise with no hope for the future so let the meltdown begin ladies…. let it out… let it all out…. they never stood a chance this season regardless of the ridiculous warm and fuzxy bs from the delusional ones

Evans needs to go all AB so he can escape the black hole with jameis at the end of season

  18. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

I cant imagine being Evans or Godwin Im sure they are like damn I could be playing on a better team with my skills and winning and not having to catch jump balls all day.

  19. orlbucfan Says:

Leftwich is NOT the problem, Arians is! If Arians does not want his players to revolt, he needs to let Griffin have a shot. I guarantee Seattle won’t get 14 free points to start the game. That’s insane. No team including the Belicheats can overcome that whopper. Bucs still almost pulled out a win. Credit the defense, Gay and the ST. How can a receiver have an OPOW game (ME13), and the offense still loses???? Only in Tampa Bay. Bucs have a monopoly on gifting games.

  20. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

I love watching Evan and Godwin expression after Winston over throws them.

  21. Onetrickpony Says:

Blow it up starting with JL,scouting dept, ,q.b. and the rest who are pretending to be NFL players or wannabe coaches. Bench Jameis see what you have in your backup,we are all ready screwed so it cant hurt any worse. Id rather, muddle thru rebuild than continue with ulcers than watching this shlt show

  22. Sharthappens Says:

We have two coaches for every player. Pats have one coach for every 6 games players. It is simply a pay day for Arians and his homeboys.

  23. 813bucboi Says:

    Lol…..

If VHG had 2PIs and gave up a td their would’ve been 6 articles by now saying trade him, cut him, he cost us the game….lol….

The secondary played well outside of his mistakes….

2 things gave us a boost….JPP and VHG moving inside to the slot while SMB played outside…

Those 2 things seemed to work but when you give a team 14points early, it’s tough to come back….

    GO BUCS

  24. Sharthappens Says:

  26. PhillyBuc Says:

BA may not be guaranteed employment for next year but pretty sure he’ll still draw quite of few years salary based on his contract. BS thing for him to say. When will we wake up and show Jason the door for bringing in such high character guys that don’t hate losing?

  27. Petty Officer Buc Says:

    Trent Williams
    Brandon Scherff
    BEST VETERAN CB

get those peices in the offseason.

Also now is the time to start Griffin to see if you can hold off a year or two on drafting a QB or do you get one in 2020.
I also wish to see JPP back for leadership purposes but his contract being reworked worries me.

  28. 813bucboi Says:

BA has lost locker room…lol BA and his BS never had the lockerroom. Players knew this washed up old bum was not the answer. Bucs meltdowns and excuses every year to justify failure are always far more entertaining than on field play….

No way in hell will we get him tho, we’ll win enough to lose out on 1 of the 3 QB’s Herbert, Tua, Burrow, and then draft a friggin CB because we are content with the league leader in interceptions JW and none of those are his fault, yet half our WR’s are all pro. Well our 1 and 2… Brashad Perriman is a disgrace, Scotty Miller is afraid of the ball and we have a TE who can’t stay healthy and is mainly used for blocking. Ughhhhhh!!!! This is torture!!!!!!!!!!!

Too many turnovers. Can’t do another year of Jameis. Five years is enough. The last three especially. So, so many turnovers. Can’t win with that. Can’t take the excuses anymore. 92 turnovers/ 102 TDs= worse than Mike Glennon. I hate our QB situation. Sickens me to see the former number one overall pick develop backwards in five years.

I think they are going to live and die with Winston this year. I would love to see what Ryan Griffin can do with the starters. I mean worse case is he turns the ball over like that doesn’t already happen every week multiple times a game. I just don’t think they will sit Winston no matter how bad it gets.

  42. tmaxcon Says:

now comes all the fools blaming race… stop it it’s so laughable now…. you soft fools have rendered the word racist, racism and bigot meaningless… the way you toss those once meaningful words around like nothing is sad and disgraceful… race has nothing to do with the fact leftwhich, BA and the entire organization sucks and is incompetent.

  43. tmaxcon Says:

    SteveK

bucs have not developed a player since sapp developed this franchise…. why are you surprised… bucs could not develop maggots from feces…. this team sucked way before wisnton and not a single first round pick has developed since sapp so don’t leave the rest of the bums out while focusing on winston… lciht and glazers set jameis up to fail rolling with that offensive line and a washed up coaching staff…

  44. SteveK Says:

I want to hear the next Ira podcast about our QB situation. It’s dire, damning, desperate, and delusional in rationalizing a solid/blameless performance.

Four more turnovers with the chance for an additional 3-4 (dropped INTs and a recovered fumble) opportunities to lose the ball are too damn many.

  45. SteveK Says:

I don’t trust Jameis to it give the ball away. For whatever reason he makes turnovers rain more than anyone.

  46. Frank Pillow Says:

There is ZERO accountability on this team. Zero. Bruce’s first task was to fix that. He hasn’t. It’s that simple. Instead, he calls out his DBs and WRs and once-in-a-while implies his QB should’ve, would’ve, could’ve made a difference decision…but no one gets benched, not really. He also loves him some Byron. By talking out of his @ss and not taking tangible action against habitual softies (looking at you VHIII, Perriman and others), Bruce is essentially pulling a Dirk, who pulled a Lovie.

  47. Go Bucs 72 Says:

The only way we get better by trading for draft picks is if someone beside Licht-brain-function is selecting the players. He’s terrible.

  48. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

“You either play for the playoffs or you play for the draft.”

Except when the Gumpster Fire is under contract for 4-1/2 more years.

    Then you’re screwed.

  49. Plex Says:

I still think this team is on the verge of taking off. I see why BA ain’t ready to flush it. JPP has the right attitude, that man will be d***** if his teammates sit there and joke around after a loss. Do you and your coworkers sit around and laugh in front of the owner after your first quarter sales are released and they’re half of last years?

Anyone putting this game on JW needs to watch the BA press conference, then if you still think its on him, explain to me how you know where the passes were supposed to be better than BA.

Dont be fooled by our secondary either. If anything. This was proof that they’re awful. If you get burned by elite talent, then play decent against weak talent. The obvious problem is not effort, its talent. Our secondary can only hang with scrubs.

I still think if we can perriman, BA takes over the offense, and we trade for a competent corner we have a chance to atleast end the season without punching holes in our walls.

  53. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t agree with playing for the draft at this point. Nor do I feel a sale is in order yet.

A sale tells our best players to give up. That’s letting the quitters on the team win. You do not get good change that way.

Start cutting certain under performing players? Yes! Show that accountability!

But imagine if Dungy had a fire sale his first year, when things looked as glum. We would not have had ten years of good contention and a Superbowl win.

  54. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    DooshLaRue Says

Pretty obvious he won’t get a new contract, barring an abrupt turnaround. May as well finally see if Griffin blows it too.

But then, emotions are high right now, so I may change my mind after cooling off. An injury would have given us an opportunity without controversy though.

Why would he just start over instead I see him removing a few pieces to add some for the run next season. This season all along was to see what we have. Give it some time to be fixed but blowing this whole thing up is the last thing to happen or Arians won’t be here next season. Let the man do his job. How Bucs!

  63. ATrain Says:

Joe do you think the OC is calling the plays like this Because he DOES NOT TRUST HIS QB??

Maybe Tenn started doubling Evans and no one is calling to throw to Evans because Of Jamies’ INTs

It’s easy to blame Defense be a They let Tenn score
But let’s look At THE DEFENSE IS TIRED because they were on the field WAY too much with turnovers

Defense played well Even the Backs played better than they have

OLine play good had some mistakes like the snap but look at the time he had

QB looks Lost. Staring down recievers. Bad choices

Problem lays with Winston he is not consistent and I don’t think he reads Defenses well
He has a Big arm and has GREAT DRIVE TO WIN

  64. Joe Says:

Maybe Tenn started doubling Evans and no one is calling to throw to Evans because Of Jamies’ INTs

It is mind-numbing to think you wouldn’t target Evans once in the fourth quarterback because Leftwich is scared of a pick. So throwing to worthless Perriman is a safer option? Please!

Glazers need to start the mid season preparations for next year by firing Licht. He is the one common denominator through the last five years. Start the house cleaning now

  70. Tim Says:

They need to purge the soft and keep the dawgs on the Team.

Shaq B. and JPP along with Suh can get this D turned around.
The O-Line need to be looked at closely, a lot of guys are getting paid like top 5 O-Line man and are playing like backup.

The QB cannot be paid over 10 Mil next year, that money must go else where.

  71. TampaTown Says:

Great article! Jason Licht and Byron Leftwich are the ones that have to go. Being a Bucs fan is like Groundhog’s Day in he!!

  72. Mike Says:

So…… a team that is a extra point, and a non blown whistle from a winning record is to be blown up??? Wow I don’t know if any of you watched this team when old Greg or lover boy was the coach. THOSE TEAMS had nothing going on. we are not halfway through the season and you are already trying to run the coach out??? Give him atleast two years before we do that people.

  73. Bobby M. Says:

I believe Leftwich calls a good game when it comes to passing but the running game is incredibly bland with a few head scratchers mixed in. The razzle dazzle play on the goal line….Why? Then 4th and 1….we go completely vanilla and get stopped. In both cases i question why not let Winston roll out….he’s a big body with sneaky moves, put him on the move and see if he can create a play….Its literally one of his better strengths.

  74. Buccfan37 Says:

Enjoy these post loss comments as everybody lets it all hang out. Every picture tells a story don’t it?

  75. jjbucfan Says:

Leftwich sucks plain and simple. This was NOT the year for BA to have a first time play caller on his sidelines. This falls on him, too. If Licht doesn’t trade for O-line or draft O-line with something higher than a 3- it doesn’t matter who is at QB. In 3 years- dude drafted a D3 tweener G/RT in the 3rd round. That is it!! He may be good if he breaks an arm or tears an ACL who is backing him up? Does anyone know who our backup center is if Jensen goes down. Please tell me it isn’t Marpet, that experiment failed already. It is truly unbelievable how the GM can ignore the most important albeit least glamorous part of the offense.

  76. jjbucfan Says:

Bobby- I have been saying the same thing for 5 years now. Jameis is at his best when he gets outside the pocket. He is almost impossible to bring down one on one- look at what he did to Cam Wake on the touchdown pass to Evans. Leftwich should be escorted from the building today. These coordinators are too smart for their own good. Finally a QB sneak on 4th and 1. Anyone know the result? Gain of almost 3 by the 6’5″ 240 pound QB. We haven’t run that for 5 years. On the most important play of the game, we hand it 7 yards back and our center forgets to block.

JOE!!! “I don’t know who made the racial remark, but unless he is married to a white girl, he should be cut.

    He is.”

That does NOT make it ANY less racist!!! I’m calling on JPP to identify this racist NOW!!!

  79. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

    The Coroner…….SPOT ON!!!

  80. Jmarkbuc Says:

Has anyone else seen the weekly shot of Tom Moore sitting on the bench, two feet from JW, chewing gum, not saying a word?

Pretty clear Tom knows there is no fixing him. He’s just sitting there trying to figure out what to spend his next paycheck on.

  81. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Morgus

    Seriously? Racist?

Grossly inappropriate, which JPP pointed out, but racist?

    This ain’t 1863 bro.

  82. lambchop Says:

Deshaun Watson had a 4th and inches play where he play actioned into a bootleg run for the first.

Is that really that difficult to think of for Lefty?

  83. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Jmark….read what The Coroner wrote. Reverse the roles. White men saying the same about black women. They’d be cut immediately. So YES, it IS RACIST. “Bro”

  84. gambelero Says:

On the Evans 4th quarter: I didn’t go to the game, but watched it on television and online which is a few seconds delayed, so I could see the plays twice. The announcers made a point of pointing out and showing the double and sometimes triple coverage on Evans.

When that happens, someone else has to step up. We’ve never had a full set up options in this situation. We’re always going with a lazy, no block, quit on route guy like a DJax or a Perriman. And what about Hump? He stone balled out yesterday, repeatedly beating Hargreaves for key plays. If we couldn’t afford him, okay, but we couldn’t find a real replacement, a fast-twitch, sneaky, goes all out on every play guy. Wait. We had one of those guys in camp, catching pass after pass in the preseason.

On running up the middle so much, so predictably: I’ve called it “run, run (for less than 3 yards total) pray for Winston to save us on third down” on JBF for several years. We used to do it so much when Koetter was here. At least Leftwich only wastes one play (for the most part).

And that tendency is most pronounced when we hit a big play and get into the red zone. I’d like to see what percentage of the time (excluding time constrained like with 11 seconds left in the half or late in the game when we need multiple scores) we ran it on first down in the red zone and what the average gain was.

Good for Joe that he had this thread. The Glazers, the coaches, the scouts and the GM all read JBF religiously. All of us have probably heard a certain expression, an obscure analytic point or something you have said a certain way parroted by different people at One Buc.

  85. WhyIHateOurFans4TheMostPart Says:

Nothing racist about a conversation about havin sex with a white girl. It may be inappropriate and definitely the wrong time but it isn’t racist you idiots. No wonder 45 gets so much support. You guys can’t comprehend what you read

  86. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Morgus

Not really sure how whoever is Fn whoever is racist…the bigger point is that their mind wasn’t on losing the game…it was on getting laid, I presume..I haven’t listened to the interview.

So unless somebody said “ Ima show whitey and F all the white girls, I don’t get it.

    Mr. Bro

  87. ClodHopper Says:

Yes it’s racist. It’s racist asf. And yes y’all’s hypocrisy on the subject is a big reason for 45s support. Thanks for catching up

  88. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Clod

Not to drag politics into it, but IMHO. 45 is completely insane.

But hearing “locker room talk” in an actual locker room, doesn’t surprise or offend me.

What pisses me off is being concerned with that, instead of the miserable performance of your job.

    God Bless JPP.

  89. ClodHopper Says:

I’m concerned with both. I won’t sweep racism under the rug because of a another bad thing

  90. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Old

    OK, I guess….

But the comments (which we can’t actually hear), just don’t seem earth shattering or racist to me.

    Maybe crass, maybe juvenile.

Clearly I’m not getting it, but it seems more racist to freak out about a 20 something football player talking about a white girl….

Hell, there’s plenty of girls of all colors I’d LTF. But that’s just me.

    Enough for me on this.

  91. Jmarkbuc Says:

    *Clod

  92. ClodHopper Says:

These aren’t my rules. These are the rules from the people that think criticizing a black prez is racist and criticizing a black QB with the most turnovers in the league is racist.

Funny how people can just selectively choose the racism rules they wish to follow.
