The Fourth-Quarter Goose Egg

October 28th, 2019

“Byron, we might do better with a Chili’s menu.”

Punt, punt, fumble, turnover on downs, interception — that’s the summary of the Buccaneers’ final four drives.

Give the official fourth-quarter comeback “W” to Ryan Tannehill.

Ronald Jones had a few good runs in the first of those win-sucking drives, but it was Peyton Barber who got the call on the critical, late 4th-and-1 on the Titans-32.

Mike Evans had a monster, All-Pro kind of day, but he didn’t get one freakin’ target in the fourth quarter. Joe has to think Bucco Bruce Arians and Byron Leftwich are better than that. It just can’t happen.

Brashad Perriman had four targets and zero catches on the final two drives. Ok, the Titans were double-teaming Evans, but where was Chris Godwin?

The offensive line fell apart on those four drives when the Bucs needed them most. Earl Watford, Donovan Smith, Ryan Jensen, plenty of blame to throw around late.

Jameis Winston couldn’t put the team on his back. The Bucs were shut out in the fourth quarter and managed just eight second-half points.

That was the ballgame. The offense flushed plenty of chances to win the game.

There were multiple defensive breakdowns by the Bucs, but if you’re searching for blame, you really can’t pin Sunday’s loss on the defense, despite the Titans scoring the second-most points they have all season.

The Bucs offense gave their defense super-short fields twice courtesy of two Jameis turnovers early, and they had four drives to score a game-winning touchdown and couldn’t get it done.

Noooooo, this time it’s the WR’s aren’t you keeping score Joe?

Bruce “Lack of Preparation H” Arians said so…

    6-10.

Jay-Miss is not the kind of QB that can put his team on his back like I saw Deshaun Watson do yesterday. Talk about a team that does NOT protect their QB well at all! Houston has a terrible O-Line!

“…Mike Evans had a monster game… didn’t get one freakin’ target in the fourth quarter. Joe has to think Bucco Bruce Arians and Byron Leftwich are better than that…”

Really? I think they should be better than targeting Perriman, aka reincarnation of “Stone Hands Clayton” and Dare – “why am I on the field”. TWICE! WHEN THE BUCS WERE NEAR THE GOAL LINE!!!! One target to Perriman, who of course wiffed. And one to Dare who was easily covered. Throw to ME who got you to the 5 yard line. Throw to Godwin. Throw to Brate. QUIT showing us how cleaver you are by targeting players who should not be on the field.

  7. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

You people and your Jay-miss crap. You are so caught up in hate its ridiculous.

The D allowed a back up QB to have a 110 QB rating.

The play calling was as bad as it could be, featuring Stone Hands Perriman, Perriman running into Dare, Barber on 4th & 1.

Dotson let his man blow by him many times, once causing a fumble on “Jay-miss” and the rest of the O-line simply sucks, (hey Joe, are you going to defend the O-line now?)

Yeah, its all Jameis’ fault. Fools. He may not be a great QB, but this was a team effort.

  9. BucEmUp Says:

Well guys….Im done. Its always been a pleasure coming on to read your comments and provide my own input. But I just dont have it in me to watch, read or listen to anything Bucs or NFL as long as Leftwich is calling the offense.Everyonr is out of sync, two wrong routes by wrs for int, fumble on Jensen, Jameis jersey looked like it went through a paper shredder with no penalties and I completley lost count of how many runs up the middle there were on first and second down just to leave third down a predictable pass attempt.

Unless Arians takes over playcalling, ill wait until the next coaching staff arrives and the nfl officiating improves.Otherwise Im a damn fool to keep giving my time to those who are providing us this product.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

BucEmUp … Agree totally with you that Arians needs to take over play-calling, but doubt that will happen anytime soon. But Leftwich needs to go; he’s a primary reason why we’ve lost at least 2 of our games. THAT’S UNACCEPTABLE.

Senor Harry … Tannehill wasn’t the reason for the Titans’ win; we were. Our defense held the Titans to 72 yds rushing on 21 carries & to 174 yds passing (21-for-33 … 63%). Sacked him 3 times, but allowed 3 TDs (2 on extremely short fields after TOs by the Bucs’ offense). The defense got screwed repeatedly (by both our own offense’s TOs and by the refs IMO) but they still played a solid game. A game that we SHOULD have won IMO. And yet we didn’t.

  11. JJV Says:

The bottom line is the blame ultimately falls on the Glazers. They are responsible with their decisions for the entire organization over the years. Like it or not, things are not going to change as we are facing a hopeless situation. There will be no trades per Arians. He wants to win now with the roster he put together and approved. The Glazers will not fire him after only one season. There is little chance of that happening unless his health fails or he himself quits. Next, they are very happy with Licht and proved it by awarding him a five year extension. How some fans feel will not affect him returning next year and beyond. Also, Winston will remain here at least one more season if not longer. The owners, gm, and coach are committed to building this system around him. They will give it time to work and certainly will not throw in the towel after only less than a half of season or even only one season. The young players on the roster, especially the secondary, will be given a chance to learn and improve in Tue system as well. There will not be wholesale changes or a “blow up” everything after this season even if it ends in a terrible record. The Glazers have invested too much in their current plans to start all over again. It will take time and may get a whole lot worse before it gets better if it ever does. There is a strong possibility that we are faced with more wasted years and season before we start it all over again.

  12. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

@DR, where did I say Tannehill won the game? D-line was great, one of the few good things to watch in the game. O-line sucked, not just “Holding Penalty” Dotson, but Smith and Jenson too. The play calling was a total embarrassment; Dare and Perriman must have some serious blackmail pics on Leftfoot! THAT was the WORST play calling I have ever seen. Perriman should be cut today to send a message this crap will not be allowed.

But lets not fool ourselves. Responsibility STARTS AT THE TOP! BA said the secondary is #TotallyFixed and now he calls them out?! F that! BA also is the one who chose our RBs that all averaged 2.4 yards per carry yesterday. Licht’s scouting/draft pics are just awful – Yeah, once in a while Licht gets lucky, but as the saying goes, “a broken clock is right twice a day”. He is not over 50% on his picks.

I believe I have been on this site since its inception. I don’t know how I can continue anymore. There is so much wrong with these Bucs and until it is acknowledged, how can a fan have any hope that one day they will turn it around? This is the lowest I have ever felt as a Bucs fan.

  13. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

@JJV, the saddest thing in what you wrote is that I think you are correct sir. Nothing will change. What we have now is what we will have next year. The Glazers are just hoping that a miracle will happen and suddenly Jameis will be a top QB, Arians will be Coach of the Year, and Licht will suddenly be a genius.

    Friggin SAD!

  15. Figures Says:

Arians said he doesn’t care about any trades.
Sometimes Mr. Genius coach you need to know when to throw in the towel.

The season is lost. This team needs draft capital (that you and licht will screw up).

They are several players away from truly contending. No point in winning 6 or 7 games when you’re not gong to the playoffs anyway. All that does is decrease your chances of getting a great player in the draft. Lose out trade a few players and get some draft picks.

Btw. It’s not rocket science. Games are won and lost in the trenches.

    DRAFT THE TRENCHES.

Trade Suh. Trade Howard (no point in Howard being here if Arians is the coach with this terrible system that can’t figure out how to use him).

There’s plenty more that could be done but it’s a broken record with this inept staff and organization.

  16. Bobby M. Says:

I thought Tannehill and Winston were about equal to one another…..

The issue with Winston is simple, he’s handcuffed the play calling/coaches because he’s so prone to turnovers. Even when they aren’t his fault, they still add to the underlying issue that he has. They are too worried with Winston to call an effective game….whether its protecting him from himself, the fans/media, or possibly even his teammates, if he screws up once, the play calling goes into an ultra conservative mode vs just simply bouncing back and moving forward with execution.

Today will be the decision day for the Bucs leadership. Look for Brate, Suh, Hargreaves, possibly Barber to be shipped. I dont see Howard going anywhere, he’s cheap and highly talented.

  17. Marlow1976 Says:

O-line has JW running for his life on last few drives. However Titans got 14 points off Buc’s turnovers early. Defense did better than normal considering the position they were put in early. However it’s time for a baseball-like fire sell and make cap room for 2020. I say we shoot for 2021 #1 overall pick and get Clemson’s T. Lawerence. It won’t be hard to put together 2 more losing season to make this a possibility… lol.

  18. SmoothBayRider Says:

For all of you people who want to comment and say that the fumble was on Jensen , go look at the film and ask yourself why did the whole offense move when the ball was snapped ? Yeah Jameis is just a dumbass and screwed up the snap count .

  19. JJV Says:

The Bucs have perfected the art of being losers. The owners, coaches, front office, players. It takes a dedicated commitment with great effort to be this bad for so long. They take being losers very seriously. Building a culture like that within an organization is no small accomplishment. At least we can be proud they are good at something.

  20. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

You know what is sad? The Dolphins are the laughing stock of the NFL, right? I have news for you, they are ahead of the Bucs because they recognize what they are and are acting on it.

The Bucs need a franchise QB, at least one lock down CB, a sack artist EDGE (plus a replacement for Sue), a RT, center and maybe a LT, etc. That is not a reload, the is a tear down rebuild. Oh, and most of all, the Bucs need someone who is a good talent evaluator – NOT Licht or BA.

Not a bright future for Bucs fans.

  21. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

how did that end up in moderation? ridiculous… like Leftfoot’s play calling.

  22. Bird Says:

What’s the overall record of backup QBs this year ?

    Probably pretty good

    #GetItDoneBruce

  24. Bird Says:

Jameis had every opportunity to win that game 3 different times in the 4th quarter

Good QBs find a way to win that game
Put the 4 turnovers aside (14 tds to 18 turnovers this year ) , he still could right the ship and score at the end.

Is he the only problem? Of course not …but he is part of the problem ? Absolutely. Those turnovers in our red zone lost the game. Not sure what it is , but his confidence is shot. His swag is gone. Happy feet / hearing ghosts – yes and yes. I did like him running more instead of trying to make a tough throw in tight window.

Replacing him will not turn the team into an immediate winner . However , I think he has been given every opportunity to win more games and has not produced. This is year 5. Most experts say , by year 3 is when a Qb should figure it out . I did not expect him to lead the team to a win …down 4 with minutes left. And that’s sad. It’s time to look into other options. Cause at this point , he starts to cost 25 plus million a year.

  25. adam from ny Says:

  26. Defense Rules Says:

Senor Harry … The two of us are actually in the same boat. The name on the side is ‘Titanic’ and we’re surrounded by icebergs. What could possibly go wrong?

Yes, OLine sucked & play-calling was a total embarrassment. When your leading rusher, by far, is your QB BECAUSE OF BROKEN PLAYS (8 rushes, 54 yds), there’s something bad wrong. And yes, responsibility to fix this mess starts at the top (with BA, not with the Glazers & Licht … far too late for them to fix anything this year, as if they could anyways).

But for those advocating a fire-sale, that’s the absolute WORST thing we could do. Yes this team has some players who need to be watching the games on Sunday on their couch instead of playing in them, but that’s really just a handful of players. This team has SUFFICIENT TALENT TO WIN SOME GAMES, just not enough of it to be a contender. We have some obvious ‘holes’ and we knew that this past Spring. Yet BA & Licht did nothing to fill those ‘holes’.

Well, except blow smoke up everyone’s butt pretending that the ‘holes’ didn’t exist. OLine? RBs? WR replacement for Hump & DJax? Veteran leadership in the Secondary? And oh ya, a viable backup QB in case Plan A didn’t work out. No we didn’t have any money (THAT’S totally on Licht IMO), but we could’ve drafted differently (OLine? RB?) and also made some salary Cap room to allow us to sign a veteran starting-caliber CB, Safety, OLineman, better WR, and a REAL backup QB.

Still, that’s water under the bridge. You are where you are. A respectable season that we can build on is STILL salvageable; we’ve got 9 games to go. But BA HAS TO start holding folks ACCOUNTABLE though ACTIONS, not just words. And that ACCOUNTABILITY has to start with this OFFENSE, specifically Leftwich 7 his assistant coaches, the OLine, the Receivers, the TEs, the RBs and Jameis Winston. Oh wait, that’s EVERYONE on the offensive side of the ball isn’t it. Ya, that’s about right.

  27. Jeagan1999 Says:

Time for a rebuild and a new start. We need to trade a couple of guys…JPP or OJ to get extra picks. Draft a QB, 2-OT’s, RB in the first 3 rounds. Say goodbye to Jason Licht and bring in a GM who can actually assess talent.

  28. BucFan81 Says:

Winston has 14 TD this season to 12 INT. By next game he could have more interceptions than TD. Yet people defend the guy to death. I was getting heat yesterday on Facebook for pointing this out and the fact that the damn coaching staff wants to blame the WR for not running the correct routes yet the Winston turnovers have been going on for 5 years now. Maybe bruce is not always the smartest guy I mean damn just a few months ago the secondary was fixed yet we have 32nd ranked passing defense and if you watch the games every damn team keeps going at VH3 because they know he can’t cover anyone. This is not rocket science. Get some proven CB next year along with a couple offensive lineman and a damn QB who won’t turn the ball over 5 times a game. Get some more defensive line help and maybe we will have a chance at the playoffs. But this garbage is not working so to the Bucs organization take responsibility for what is going on and move on from some of these guys that are here just collecting a paycheck and that suck.

  29. Defense Rules Says:

SmoothBayRider … Good catch on that fumbled snap. Sad. That cost us the ballgame as much as any other play. Jameis & the offense looked way out of sync for a long time after that. And that’s now ELEVEN turnovers in the last TWO games … BOTH LOSSES. Whodathunkit?

  30. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

@Defense Rules: “…But for those advocating a fire-sale, that’s the absolute WORST thing we could do…”

I so disagree. As I said in my comment that is in moderation (will this one be too? have I made to many posts today Joe?), The Bucs have too many needs. “…This team has SUFFICIENT TALENT TO WIN SOME GAMES, just not enough of it to be a contender…”. THAT sir is where we have been for years – middle of the pack. Therefor drafinng middle of the pack.

How do we get a real franchise QB drafting middle of the pack? A lock-down CB? How about a LT or a RT or a center for overpaid Jensen? And a scary EDGE rusher? Don’t forget we loose Sue, JPP and Barrett after this year. Dude, we just need too much help. The Bucs organization is disorganization. Its a total mess. DR, are you telling me the Dolphins did it wrong in trading their LT for two 1st rd picks and a 4th? Shoot, I’d trade D Smith for a single 1st and a 4th all day long right now.

  31. Allbuccedup Says:

Its BAs fault he the QB whisper right. Jameis can’t find his secondary receiver. If the primary receiver is not open he gets happy feet. Thats when the problem starts. He even brought in ancient Tom Moore still didn’t help.

  32. Sharthappens Says:

The QB blacks out when the pressure is on. No poise. I heard earlier this morning in talk radio that the play in which Perriman tackled the RB would be called Bucaroo or J Boo Boo. They were having a contest for the best name. I hope he can get back into “Stanford” to get an education, as this NFL thing is not working for him.

  33. Buc4evr Says:

Jameis is history. Time for a reboot. Sadly, Jameis has tons of talent, but he can’t deal with pressure and makes horrible mental errors. As far as Perriman, please cut him today. The guy is a total waste of roster space.

  34. Slugglife Says:

    Careful Buc Fan 81.

Saying anything negative about VH3 will draw the wrath of 813. Saying he can’t cover or tackle makes you a chump. Apparently we all watched different games yesterday.

  35. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Our red zone troubles haunt us….cost us wins…..we continually try a running play up the middle and get stuffed and passes to secondary receivers….the playcalling is awful.

The problem is that BA is protecting Jameis and likely Leftwich also.

To say the interceptions are the receiver’s fault simply doesn’t pass the eye test……there wasn’t a receiver anywhere near the two throws and Jameis should have been able to see that when he threw.

Although we should find another QB….I’m starting to believe that Arians will protect Jameis and may support a cheap 1 or 2year deal.

  36. orlbucfan Says:

BA is an ahole with a big ego. I hold him accountable for this loss. I don’t follow college football so I never got into the JW piefights. However, BA needs to sit him next week and let Griffin start. Bowles’ defense is gradually improving. LVD raising postgame cain will help. So, is the ST–Gay is settling down. Now, that all the playoff noize is over, I’m going to watch the team grow the last 9 games. BA is calling the offense, and man, he STINKS! That’s the problem area and it sure isn’t the players, it’s the head coach!

  37. 813bucboi Says:

    DR

    BL cost us 2 wins?..lol…

Didn’t know he missed 3kicks vs the giants and blew the play dead on DWs big hit….

Anthony Becht explains all the TOS and not one was on Jameis so another person who knows what they are talking about and backs what I have been saying. People who actually played the game get it. So before you all try to run Jameis off maybe you need to let this thing play out. Go Bucs! Start supporting your team vs bashing it every week. It’s a first year head coach trying to change a culture of losing. The players need to learn to focus on their individual assignments and get their craft right. Come on Bucs let’s get this! Focus!

  46. Ed Says:

There were plenty of plays where play action fake‘s gave our quarterback more than enough time to make a play. This is the NFL you can’t expect to have a lot of time to throw the ball in every play, that’s why quarterbacks like Drew Brees Philip Rivers and Tom Brady who are no more elusive than Jameis still make plays with pressure because they are decisive. Talent can only take you so far, Seeing the field and knowing when to release the ball is something that cannot be taught or coached, It’s a timing thing that we see other quarterbacks around the league I have a grasp of it, Our quarterback after five years hasn’t learned how to play the position like a professional. As a professional quarterback you are judged by wins and losses not yards per passing attempt

  47. Defense Rules Says:

Im Tired and 87 is Right … Everyone recognizes that BA is a first year coach here, but you don’t change a culture of losing by losing some more. I agree with you about letting this thing play out, BUT … a team can’t keep making the SAME MISTAKES week after week and still improve. Our defense is improving IMO, but we’d set a better foundation for next year if we just sat Hargreaves. He won’t be here next year, so why waste the snaps on him. Give them to the youngsters & let’s see if they can hack it.

Our offense has regressed IMO, big time. And it starts with the OLine. How those guys can play like they did against the Rams and then poop all over themselves like they did against the Panthers & Titans is beyond me. Something’s drastically wrong, and I lay it on coaching, specifically fundamentals, preparation, play design & play-calling.

Jameis hasn’t helped himself any oftentimes, BUT … this OLine isn’t protecting him worth a hoot (maybe he’s starting to see ‘ghosts’ too). He’s taken every offensive snap, all 415 of them (so have Marpet & Jensen BTW). He’s been sacked a repulsive 28 times in 7 games (4 sacks per game average … like 64 sacks on the season? Yuck). He’s taken 54 QB Hits in 7 games (almost 8 QB Hits per game average … on-track for taking 124 QB Hits this season … YGBSM). That’s beyond absurd. Jameis has his problems to be sure, but that kind of punishment borders on criminal & doesn’t give him a chance to actually correct the mistakes that he’s making.

To an extent, I think he’s been set up to fail, unintentionally of course. BA & BL have tried to ‘reprogram Jameis’ & it’s not working. Quite the contrary; he’s regressed. I have zero confidence in Leftwich, but still have some in Arians (it’s fading fast though). The Leftwich experiment is over in my mind; time for BA to either take the reins or let Harold Goodwin do it.

The pass rush improved the secondary thanks to JPP which had the entire defense play better….

Give the official fourth-quarter comeback “W” to Ryan Tannehill.

Not much negativity going around for the defense and most of the blame is going to the offense and winston but the defense officially gave up the go ahead score and we lost the game. If your here calling a bad snap Winston fault and even counting it as an interception, yes the defense failed to stop this lose. Great quarterbacks put teams on their shoulders and good defenses tighten up in the 4th quarter, the defense sucks and gave up the win who cares if a few players played well it doesn’t matter.

He has another 9-10 passes that should have been picked off but there is a reason some guys play defense…they cannot catch. He is 2-5 this year. Four of the loses are 100% due to his poor play.

So we are really supposed to believe that the Bucs coaching staff didnt
“Call Evans or Godwins number” in the fourth Quarter.
So what were they doing, just standing like statues on the line of Scrimmage?
    It doesnt work like that.
There are usually 3 receivers out on routes, or 2 receivers and A TE.
Additionally, there is frequently a RB in the flats, as a “Hot” read.
While one Wr may be the primary target, the other WRs are also options
Thats what they call “ checking down his progressions”. The Qb looks first at the Primary. If hes covered, the QB looks to his other options.

In others words- we have no friggin Idea who the play was called for. We only know which option T

  60. Capt. Tim Says:

    Zc- damn it
