So, About That Deep Ball

October 24th, 2019

Name missing.

One of the biggest complaints Joe sees from folks who want to run off America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is the claim he is awful at deep passes.

Joe has heard this so often Joe was starting to believe it. But as a disgusting European minister of propaganda once said in the early 20th Century, tell a lie enough and people accept it as fact. That damn near happened to Joe here.

Is Jameis rotten as deep passes? Research suggests no. And this comes from failed minor league pitcher and one of the high priests of the PFF Tribe, Steve Palazzolo.

It seems Jameis isn’t even in the bottom-10 in deep ball inaccuracy.

For those that lie awake at night dreaming of Ryan Griffin as the Bucs’ starting quarterback, Joe will guess those same people would fall over themselves if the could swap Jameis for most of those quarterbacks above. Yet per data, those guys are worse at deep passes than Jameis.

The same folks, Joe assumes, have malcontent DeSean Jackson on their fantasy teams, or equate PlayStation with real football. Yeah, Jameis could have been better with Jackson but it would sure have helped if Jackson didn’t freelance so much in games (but that’s a story for another day).

Joe also believes it is safe to say all of those quarterbacks have a similar trait that Jameis does not enjoy. None plays on a team with the worst pass defense in the NFL.

Laughably stupid read. The Winston apologist Joe strikes again. Yeah, let’s blame the pass D for Winston’s inaccuracy. I guess it’s okay to just sling it all over creation in playing catchup (even though the #1 overall pick 5 years veteran gave the other team the ball inside his own 50…again). Hey, why not bring just pick ALL the rookies and line them up with Winston to make him look better? Should not include Dan Jones on this list though since he looked like Brady compared to Winston on the opposite side of the ball that day. When it comes to the old heads like Stafford (or not so old heads like Goff), at least they have accomplished something other than garbage yards and a suspension. Now, I don’t know who dreams of Griffin as their QB but it’s certainly justifiable at this point that smart Bucs fans want anyone but Winston and would like to evaulate Griffin as the future backup–one less thing to do.

Jameis Winston is like that food that made you vomit in the past and you just can’t tolerate it again no matter how many times you try.

Don’t let this article get out into the real media. It makes Bucs fans and the Tampa Bay area look bad. Maybe do an article with how many QBs throw the ball better than Winston and look at their accomplishments. The only bigger joke…hey, about a piece on Shaun King was really on a HoF track too.

  3. Lunchbox Says:

Yeah Jameis’s throws are catchable. The defenses catch them pretty much every game.

  4. Buc believer Says:

I could swear that once or twice or maybe a thousand times Joe has referenced the PFF tribe as a bunch of trained orangutans or something similar. Now that a stat is brought up that Joe likes he touts that as solid fact. Hmmm VERY interesting.

  5. ATrain Says:

10 yards is a deep pass?

  6. Kevin Says:

10 yds seems to short for what we recognize as deep balls. It’s mainly the deep 20+ yd rainbow bombs that seem to rarely hit the mark.

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

The joy of statistics! 10+ yards is now a deep pass?! Lol!

  8. Sharthappens Says:

The underlying point here is that the coaches do not even trust him to throw the deep ball that they take it out of his repertoire. I would also wonder it his percentage is better when taking into consideration his interceptions. Meaning, ruling them as an actual catch.

  9. SmittyToiletBowles Says:

Goff and Jones?? And they played the Bucs. Those 2 must be terrible in the other games the Bucs put em into MVP consideration.

  10. ClodHopper Says:

No doubt his deep ball has improved this year. His first 4 years gave him the well deserved reputation though.

With Desean Jackson it took approximately one game for every other QB he’s worked with to get that deep ball chemistry. You can say a lot of things about Desean but the deep balls woes weren’t on him.

  11. Pete I Says:

another meaningless stat for Jameis “meaningless stats” Winston – congrats to him!

To bad being on this list doesn’t seem to help win football games.

  12. Pete I Says:

I guess I should say the NOT being on this list also doesn’t seem to help win football games.

  13. Bob in Valrico Says:

Unfortunately , Jameis doesn’t always throw the ball where only the receiver can catch it. Just the opposite on many too occasions. BY the most lenient of standards a deep ball would be over 20 yards.

  14. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

This is THE MOST LAUGHABLE defense of America’s Grop……errr, Quarterback yet!!! Percent uncatchable beyond 10 yards??? 10 yards is now a “deep ball”??? We have ALL seen America’s Grop….errr BADLY miss open deep receivers (See Scotty Miller 2 games ago….open deep by 5 yards……Groper, with time, sails it another 5 yards over his head). Dammmmmit, this MUST be Joe Thing One. And the final culmination of stupidity in this piece? Blame the defense.

  15. Bob in Valrico Says:

    oops, on too many occasions.

  16. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

and every other type of throw

  17. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Dang Joe…what did I say that got my comment run??

  18. Joseph Mamma Says:

I’m curious how the ‘the worst pass defense in the nfl’ relates to his deep ball accuracy?

  19. Bird Says:

That picture of Jameis squinting is the same as joe watching buc games and claiming this “Bigfoot” great looking deep ball exists

Again , logical joe and Ira. We beg you.
Can you get obsezzed joe some help
Maybe have him see a psychiatrist
Try to get him to put down his Jameis doll for a few hours a day.

  20. gotbbucs Says:

Nothing wrong with Winston. He’s a first ballet hall of famer.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Anything to try to make “America’s QB” look good….how about a 30+ pass?

When will we ever see a Jameis Winston poll?

We discuss him every day but….no…..no poll….

  22. Ndog Says:

This site has to love all these brainwashed fools. All that needs to be done is mention the QBs name and they come a running as predictable as ever with their same comments every day. Do you not see what their doing to you????

Of course you don’t you have already proven your lack of reasoning or understanding.

  23. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bucs aren’t 2-4 because of deep ball accuracy.

They lose because Jameis leads the league in pick 6’s, is tied for the lead in sacks with 25, and only Fitzpatrick has a higher interception % among active qb’s with 5 years experience. ( I won’t count Mayfield because he only has less than 1 1/2 years in)

Every team, except maybe Patriots, has a weakness- Bucs is secondary, but that may change with experience- Jameis is consistently inconsistent.

  24. ModHairKen Says:

Fake news. The complaint with Jameis is not the “deep pass,” which 10+ is not, it is his turnovers. Don’t blame the defense for that. How many points has Jameis directly cost the defense or prevented the Offense from scoring with his untimely TOs?

No one wants Ryan Griffin. They just don’t want Jameis’ TOs. He’s been given 5 years and has shown ZERO improvement. He’s uncoachable.

    Jameis is a bust.

  25. gotbbucs Says:

Can we get the summer intern back? I had respect for his post’s.

Listen all y’all want to run Winston off I just gotta day give BA more than 6 games with him. It’s seriously only bin 6games an 1 offseason. This isn’t madden an players just got to top level in a snap of a finger. IF after a full season an another offseason Winston hasn’t improved then let him go. But it takes more than a handful of games an 1 offseason to be a finished product.

Ndog…”I disagree with the majority, so…so…..sooo ya’ll are stupid”

  29. Jason Says:

10 yards is a deep ball? Joe just trolled the Jameis haters. Well played Joe. Well played.

I would be curious to see if that list stays the same if it was for passes over 25 yards though.

  30. ElioT Says:

    Jason Licht Sucks!

  31. Bird Says:

This is how delusion the one obsezzed joe is

He actually said the only (1 )person that moves the needle more then Jameis is Tom Brady.

I mean how crazy is that ?
Do you think anyone outside of Tampa and maybe some Tallahassee fans really think about Jameis ever . Or have the nfl ticket and put on the Bucs to watch Jameis. When young guys like russel Wilson , pat mahommes and desaun Watson are killing it. Or old vets like Brady brees and Rodgers are out there

    It’s just So weird
And we all k ow this origins …remember the Pitt FSU game.

    The majority of who?

  33. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Look at the ball to Evans towards end of first half of Panthers game that traveled over 60 yards in the air and hit ME on the hands and in stride-DROPPED. That one pass could have changed the whole complexion of the game had it been a catch and score , which it should have been.

  34. WyldKat Says:

    What’s the stats for 20+?

  35. D-Rome Says:

    Trubisky is worse than Glennon.

  36. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

I seem to remember a deep pass to ME13 last game that hit him in the hands in full stride.

I remember a deep pass hitting ME13 in the end zone in one of the first games and bounced off his hands.

I remember a deep pass in the end zone bouncing off Perriman’s hands.

I remember a deep completion from the 2 yard line to Godwin about 40 yards downfield right before a safety. CG was about 6″ out of bounds.

I remember OJ dropping a deep TD.

I’m getting old, my memory is fading, but it seems to me JW has been on the money so far.

  37. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

    gotbbucs Says:…nice one !

  38. Ndog Says:

What’s funny is everyone knows Trubisky sucks YET last year against most of the same players we have now, he absolutely destroyed our secondary yet we are supposed to win. Think about it folks, we spend way to much time talking about the QB and not nearly enough time talking about the real issues on this team.

  39. Capt. Tim Says:

Jameis has the best stats, for a terrible franchise killing QB, that I’ve ever seen!!
I bet he goes in the hall of fame, with a Passer Rating of 41.5, and a Winning Record of 41-172.

And he will ask Joe to present him!

  40. Ndog Says:

There’s good ole Capt. Tim, “the QB should be able to score 50 every week regardless of no running game, getting hit in the mouth every play and the defense knowing what is coming. Heck the QB should just play 11 on 1 and score by himself as all that matters is the QB. And ours sucks, that’s why we don’t win!”

  41. D-Rome Says:

Think about it folks, we spend way to much time talking about the QB and not nearly enough time talking about the real issues on this team.

    Ndog,

Issue #1 always has been Jason Licht. No one seriously debates this. Issue #2 is Jay-Miss’ inconsistent, turnover prone play in a contract year.

  42. NPRSageBoy Says:

With JayMiss a “deep ball miss” is just another term for interception or turnover

  43. Ndog Says:

Issues are in the order below:

    1. Secondary
    2. Oline
    3. Pass rush
    4. Running game
    5. WR/TE/RB lack of separation
    6. Offensive skill players lack of speed/YAC
    7. ZERO return game ability in punt or kick off game
    8. QB tries to do too much

  44. Rayjay1122 Says:

Winston can pile up stats. He can be a great fantasy QB when he does not throw 6 interceptions in a game. He is just a below average QB playing on a very below average team. I would not give him a new contract though unless it’s very cap friendly.

Face it, as long as Licht and the Glazers are here, we are going to lose more than we win regardless of the QB. I have zero faith in the whole franchise starting with the owners. So, in my opinion, debating Winston’s stats or future has absolutely zero impact on the future of the team. The Bucs could not win with any QB in the league with mega holes and lack of talent at every position group and poor coaching.

Can tell you are a Trump supporter. You use the same techniques.

Instead on focusing on the facts of the article, you start pointing fingers in another direction, ignoring the truth and hoping others ignore it too.

  46. Dapostman Says:

The OL and the secondary are STILL the weak links on this team. When the OL has played decent Winston has played a good game. When the jail break happens because the OL just isn’t good enough Winston is forced to make a play. Some turnovers are definitely on Winston as when he has a good pocket and throws a pick but lately he has been under duress a lot the last two games and his play has suffered. Bottom line OL needs to play better. BTW on the pass to ME13 which he dropped Winston had a clean pocket.

That play where Winston was hit outside the pocket where he fumbled was reminiscent of Joe Montana getting hit by Leonard Marshall in the 1990 NFC Championship. No one said Montana should have thrown the ball away.

John Madden, “everyone is covered so there is no one to throw to so he has to take the hit.”

Buc fans, “Winston sucks. He should have thrown it in the seats.”

You can watch the Montana play on YOUTUBE.

    NAILED IT!

  48. SmoothBayRider Says:

NDog , did you ever stop to think that maybe , just maybe , the secondary sucks and has sucked the last 5 seasons because the offense is turning the ball over and the defense can’t stay off of the field ? Our QB has the most turnovers since he came into the league in 2015 . I’m sure of you were to look at some historical data , there is probably some correlation between crappy secondaries and QBs that turn the ball over .

  49. Brandon Jeff Says:

Contrary to most of the posters on this site, the only problem I see with Jameis is his inability to reign it in. ie; not force a play when there is not a play to be made. I love his desire to win but he has to control that. The rest of the problems are with other position groups, coaching and playcalling.

  50. Brandon Jeff Says:

    IMHO.

  51. Bucsfanman Says:

I love the argument that NONE of it is Jameis’ fault. 5 interceptions and two fumbles, man that defense is terrible! Amiright?!

  52. Isaac haggins Says:

Let’s be real it’s the 25 yrd plus throw where he can’t land it in a swimming pool and may not hit the deck …………. the 25 and under throws he can drive he’s fine and that end zone touch pass , terrible !!! But as a coach it shouldn’t be hard to work with !!! Like pretty much don’t call for your deep balls over the shoulder right to the sideline !!! Like give rec 3-5 yards to the sideline, master the middle of the field where the rec controls the angle to the ball , not the ball to the proposed max depth of route

  53. Brandon Jeff Says:

    @ Bucsfanman
If your post was in response to mine, let me rebut. I’m not a Winston apologist. I was merely trying to bring some balance to this discussion. Winston’s inability to understand how a ball control offense is what this team needs is huge and a part of why we are failing. It is imperative that he learns he cannot force the ball. He needs to take what the defense gives him. The shorter high percentage play is often there and can set up the big play. In summation, his play is hurting this team. However, there are many serious issues hurting this team and Jameis is just one of them.

  54. ClodHopper Says:

Speaking of Glennon, is Joe becoming the leader of the Jameis mob. 😁

  55. Ivan Aviles Says:

Homeboy has 100 td’s versus 94 turnovers! 68 int and 26 fumbles. Yes! He deserves a new contract!!!

  56. unbelievable Says:

J0e loves trolling his readers 🙂

  57. T REX Says:

When did 10+ yards become a DEEP BALL?

This article gets a big fat F guys.

  58. Bucsfanman Says:

Brandon Jeff- Not specific to you and I certainly appreciate your take. I agree.
Mine was just a general statement of some of the blind defense you see from some posters here. They simply cannot accept that Jameis plays a large role in team losses, not just the defense, or kicker, or RB. They are quick to dismiss Jameis’ flaws while ignoring the fact that Jameis holds some very unflattering statistical leads in certain categories.
Our TEAM has major flaws. We are last in pass defense and 3rd in turnovers. One belongs to one side of the football and not the other.
It is one of Winston’s weaknesses, his inability to check down and not force things. That weakness brings us pure joy sometimes too. At the end of the day though, it’s a marathon not a sprint. Most of all football is a complementary sport. No ONE aspect exists in a vacuum.

  59. BrianDorry55 Says:

Let me shout this from the rooftops…JAMEIS IS NOT INACCURATE!…he just makes too many poor decisions. Which is why this is so damn frustrating.

  60. Swampbuc Says:

Evans dropped two beauties in London, the first one may have changed the game. Jameis turning it over is a problem, but not THE problem. No pass defense has Jameis thinking he needs to win the game on every play. Again. Give the guy a defense and he can win — see 2016.

  61. Scorps1 Says:

How about 20 or 30 yards? Believe it Joe. Teams are winning with first year quarterbacks with less surrounding talent. Shouldn’t be having this discussion at year 5.

  62. July Joe Says:

Statistical PROOF slaps the Jameis-haters in the face … and they ignore it and sling insults … typical.

ALL last year they whined about JW not being able to connect on deep-balls with a diva who refused to practice … that diva is gone and JW is better than Mahomes on deep balls … sooooo many fans are soooooo stupid it’s scary!
